Book Review: Eat, Pray, Love

After going to Italy this summer, I pretty much had to read Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert since a third of it takes place in Rome.

Eat, Pray, Love is a fantastic book, and it is so much better than the movie, which I found to be quite horrible.

The book takes you through the experiences of the author as she goes through a debilitating divorce and tries to find herself and some happiness.  The search takes her to Italy, which she eats as many carbs as she wants, and revels in the sound of the Italian language.

Then she goes to India where she goes to an ashram and tries to find peace.

Then she goes to Bali to relax and just live.

Though the author goes to different places in search of herself, that’s not the message of the book.  You don’t have to go anywhere to find happiness, silence, and peace.  All those things can be found within yourself and that’s what the book inspired me to do.  Be positive, upbeat, and try your best to be your best.  What more can anyone really do?

The movie inspired me to do none of these things because it didn’t go as deep as Gilbert’s book did.  The movie is more of a visual romp through the world with the smiling and unchanging face of Julia Roberts.

If you haven’t read the book, you absolutely must.  It is probably one of the best books I’ve read all year.
