I love and hate Best-of lists. Many of the times, products are so overhyped and just don’t deliver. They get popular because beauty editors already like them and so the public votes for them. On the other hand, it’s always great to see new products make the list and hope that they did so because they’re really good!
Elle just released its Beauty Awards 2008 and you can see a roundup online – or here’s a rundown of what won. And I want to hear from you – what do YOU think of Beauty Awards that magazines put out? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
And here’s a rundown of some of the winners and what they say about them, with my comments next to each product in bold.
Chanel Teint Innocence They say that this makes your skin look flawless, but my experience is that Chanel’s range of colours is so limited that darker skinned gals will be left out of the mix.
A “quick dusting” of i.d. bareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation is enough to get “great coverage” that “never leaves a telltale line of color.” True! But it applies to any brand of mineral makeup. A little bit goes a long way and it’s great to have on hand for getting a no-makeup look.
L’Oréal Paris True Match “covers blemishes but doesn’t appear cakey” and “mimics skin texture like no other formula.” They use this backstage at Toronto Fashion Week and blended well it really does make your skin look pretty.
You “easily conceal” with M.A.C Select Tint SPF 15, while the “sheer finish” is like “your skin, only better” and “doesn’t feel like a mask of makeup.” Be aware that this is one of the most heavy forms of tinted moisturizer out there.
“Even tone” with a swipe of the “one-shade-fits-all” cream-to-powder Benefit Some Kind-A Gorgeous. There is no such thing as one shade fits all! Even Benefit recognizes this because they have come out with a deeper version of this foundation. I’m not sure how this could win best of anything even with more shades.
Origins Halo Effect “makes it seem like you had a good night’s sleep.” Plus, “it doesn’t irritate sensitive skin,” and the subtle shine “is absolutely fabulous.” We love a good highlighter and a liquid one blends well and looks natural.
You sweep Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick powder on cheeks because “the rose undertones highlight dark skin without looking ashy.” Bobbi Brown makes the best products that look natural. If you’re tired of obvious looking makeup head over to their counter!
“So sexy,” Stila All Over Shimmer “comes with a brush applicator that deposits “just the right amount of glimmer” to “brighten skin year-round.” All I can say is that this is great to have on hand to mix with your foundation.
WITHOUT A TRACE
Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer delivers “flawless, long-lasting coverage” with skin-conditioning vitamins, making it “the best concealer ever.” Bobbi Brown makes the best foundations and concealors and if you haven’t tried them, maybe this will convince you.
“For first-timers,” Stila Original Smoky Eye Talking Palette walks you through “how to get party-ready step-by-step.” It’s “foolproof fabulousness.” This palette really is great, and the colours are beyond perfect and silky in texture making this a dream to use for beginners.
So the question remains, what makes your top products for 2008?
