GOSH Professional Permanent Cream Hair Colour Review

First they started with their makeup, and now you can buy their hair products too.  When I was last in the drugstore, I was in the mood for something new and so I picked up GOSH Professional Permanent Cream Hair Colour.

They claim that this covers 100% of grey in 30 minutes and contains moringa seed extract that can condition hair and give it shine.

I got the product in Darkest Brown and it did indeed cover the bits of grey that I had, which I was pleased with.  I also liked that it was a nice thick cream so it was super easy to apply and I didn’t have any drips after it was in my hair.

The one thing I didn’t like about this is that it gives quite a flat matte colour to your hair.  There are no tones or translucent aspects to the hair colour, and if I wasn’t just touching up my roots, I would be very wary of using this all over my hair.  It would just make it way too dark.

I also had a hard time really getting that clean feeling in my hair after using this.  After rinsing the first time, my hair felt almost stiff and sticky and didn’t dry the way that I would like it to.  It took a couple of shampoos 24 hours later to really get my hair back to the way that I like it.

At $9.99 from Shoppers Drug Mart, I definitely didn’t break the bank on this hair colour, but I don’t think that I’ll be buying it again.

We tried this over a month ago on my roommate’s hair. The cream was very runny, making it hard to get on her without getting drips all over her skin.
The gloves that came with the kit were flimsy, and much cheaper quality than what I am used to in other boxed dyes.
After washing it out, she complained about how her hair felt, and rewashed it.
The colour started fading within a week.
All in all extremely disappointing product and not one we will be using in the future.

I tried this product when it first came out and had excellent results. Like you I have some grey hair, and it covered beautifully. I have used it 3 times, first, all over my head, then to touch up. I love the silky feel I get after using this product. I especially like the response I got from the help line. I was in the store trying to decide which colour was right for me so I called the 800 number on the box. The colour specialist who answered recommended that I choose a shade lighter than the one I was considering, and it worked well for me. I have used the other one you recommended, the Clairol perfect 10, but overall I prefer the GOSH product.

Thanks Ray, but I don’t think it was a colour problem – I chose the colour that most closely matched my natural hair colour, I think the formula just doesn’t work for me.

allo everyone, for me to come here to live a comment really mean i have something to say. i’m 39 years old and i do have lots of white and gray hair, more then many woman of my age and for me it’s a real problem. i was for long time natural instinct user then i did switch to nice and easy and i did not know what to do because every time, my roots was way lighter then the dark brown i was expecting. this morning, i did try Gosh for the first time and i love it, i love it, i love it!!!!!!!! i did use 234 dark brown and it did cover 100% my white hair!!! i’m so happy!!!! sériously, Gosh you make my day!!!!!! i love you and you just find a new customer!!!!! i just hope some day, you make a bigger format cause 1 application is not enouph to do all my hair. and 2 application is to much. that would be nice someone think about making the middle size format. thank you,

    Horrible hair colour!
By far the worst I have ever used

  7. Mike February 8, 2011 at 7:59 pm #

my daughter and I use this hair dye..best hair dye i have ever used..and i have been dying my hair for over ten years now…i use the copper brown and my daughter used the dark brown…no dye aroma afterwards in my hair..cover grey 100%…silky feeling afterwards….shiney….its a keeper for me…and the price is fabulous…..feels..more like salon hair dye to me……and i use the conditioner too now…..cheap..and works great

  9. Loralie March 27, 2011 at 3:08 pm #

just tried it out, well, it does colour well, but yes, a little runny, I like a little thicker product myself, and yes, the colour was very close to what I chose, but didn’t have the ‘sparkle’ of what I usually use, with very little in the dimensional colour range either. But I always highlight after too, so that wasn’t really an issue. It didn’t have a strong odor, so the nose really appreciated it. But I will stick with my Garnier. It did cover the grey really well too, so that is a bonus over l’Oreal. For the price it is a good pick, but for $4 more, I would still choose the Garnier.

This is the worst hair dye I’ve ever used. It took chunks of hair out while I was washing it out and has left a gooey, greasy feeling in my hair that I can still feel to the extreme 2 weeks after. I would recommend that no one ever use this product. I cannot get rid of the gross residue in my hair and although the colour is fine it has ruined my hair.

  11. Henna April 3, 2011 at 11:20 am #

Hi Caitlyn, I got the residue out by using a clarifying shampoo. You can also get hair dye remover from the drugstore, and that might help.

I used Gosh hair color for the second time. I bought 2 boxes as my hair is long and thick. The gloves in the first box were defected. The ring finger was closed completely, so I opened the second box and could not belive my eyes. There was no gloves and instructions at all. the box was sealed so I don’t know why there was no instructions or gloves in the box. Needless to say I had to call my neighbor to see if she had any gloves I could use. What a pain in the ……..
I will not use Gosh hair color again. The color was okay but it did not make my hair shiney and silky the way other hair color does. I think I’ll spend the extra money and go with Loreal and and stick with them. DO YOU PEOPLE NOT CHECK THE BOXES BEFORE THEY ARE SHIPPED OUT! It is disgusting that this happened to me twice! I find it hard to believe that it is a coincidence that I got 2 defects!
I want my money back for the aggravation spent looking for other gloves!

I have only used this hairdye once, NEVER again. It dried my hair out so frikkin bad, it fried it. The color took forever to wash out which caused my hair to dry out even more. Yes the price is good but the product is CRAP.

  14. Kandis June 28, 2011 at 10:13 pm #

The only thing I have to say about the product is it is EXTREMELY runny! I can’t stand it, made such a huge mess. The color was ok though.

the Mahogany, 401 turned my hair black… but it still looks rockin’ but I would have really liked it to have turned mahogany… so make sure you go lighter when picking up the colour

  16. Jen July 18, 2011 at 11:38 am #

I tried Gosh for the first time last week. Turns out a colleague also used it the week before I did. We used the same shade (dark brown). Both of us have blue hair. I am not impressed. The dark brown has faded already, my hair feels like straw and the conditioner smells bad. I will never use this product again.

  17. Leanna July 25, 2011 at 10:46 pm #

I was not happy with this product at all I love their make up but the hair dye has left my hair dry and straw like I would like to know what gosh suggests now?

I just wanted to share with everyone that I absolutely adore the new hair colour product that is out on store shelves, made by GOSH. I have been a fan of Nice N’ Easy for years until I one day felt that it no longer looked polished after I coloured it. While it still covered nicely and it gave my hair some body as I have fine, fly away, baby hair that is totally straight and needs a lot of mousse and hairspray in order to poof it up big. I love big hair after being raised in the 60’s and 70’s.. I really envy girls with big dos and long, spiral hair…anyhow, I discovered Gosh about a half year ago and I have never looked back. It is amazing for my hair. Not only does it give my hair a wonderful, polished and brightened blonde appearance, it also offers me a lot of lift and body without drying out my hair…There is no heavy residue afterwards making it difficult to rinse out for me..it somehow performs miracles upon my hair that I have never been able to achieve before. I now use much less mousse and sometimes even skip it leaving me to my hairspray alone…I am so happy with my hair colour now and I received many compliments on it by both friends and strangers. =) Also, without the need to tease it so often anymore, my hair has actually started growing. Gosh! I can’t believe how wonderful my hair looks now. Thus, I highly recommend Gosh permanent hair dye at least in the blonde shade (108) which is my diehard new favourite with no exceptions. Thanks Gosh! You made me love my hair again.

    With total sincerity and appreciation,

I always dye my hair black and have a hard time getting the dye to stick and fades within a month, even when i get it professionally dyed. I was EXTREMELY impressed with how long Gosh stayed in my hair! It was so dark and vibrant for months and I will definitely be using this from now on!

  20. kelly September 30, 2011 at 5:49 pm #

I recently used Gosh haircolor for the second time as a root touch up. The first time I used it about 6 weeks ago I loved the results. I wish I could say the same about the second time. The box claims to have 100% grey coverage. For me it was about 50%. I had to go out and buy another brand to cover the grey. I am very hesitant to try Gosh for a 3rd time.

  21. jodie November 16, 2011 at 1:50 pm #

I recently used this product – darkest brown. I used it about a month ago or more and i cannot believe how dried out my hair was since the day i dyed it.
I dye my own hair all the time – usually use garnier and I will be going back to that.
I even went as far as getting my hair cut because it was THAT dry and that hasn’t helped. I generally have really healthy, shiny hair and because of this product my hair is crazy dry and i can barely get the brush through it after I shower!
Another thing I don’t like is it faded so badly that my hair is actually lighter now than it was when I first dyed it – almost as if it stripped my hair and is back to my natural colour (which is a light brown).
Anyway, needless to say, I won’t be using this product again

  22. Marie November 17, 2011 at 8:56 am #

I just bought GOSH and didn’t use it yet. After reading all the bad things about it, I think I’m going to put the box in the garbage – Seems it’s hard on the hair, dry it, etc. I already have problems with my hair since I had chemotherapy (6 years ago) that I’m not going to even try this products. Thanks to all of you for your posts.

  23. Mad November 19, 2011 at 8:58 pm #

    I LIKE this product.

So after reading all these comments, i was extremely reluctant to use this product. However, i bought it before reading about it so i decided to give it a shot. Here are the results:

Hair: my hair is fairly long, fairly thick and loosely curly. It was medium brown with some blonde highlights but my hair is naturally pretty dark. I dont have any grey hair either. I chose the darkest brown color.

-The consistency of the dye was pretty much the same as the other brands ive tried and I have used many different kinds in the past.

-I did not find that this dye gave my hair the dry feeling after i have washed it (while it is still wet). Usually after i wash my hair with other brands, it feels very dry, as if i bleached it. My hair actually felt pretty healthy. I do however always use shampoo after dying my hair.

-All you have to do when you’ve colored your head and your ears is to use alcohol to take it off.

-I decided to blow dry my hair to see how it worked out. I did not feel any kind of film over my hair, it feels very clean and soft and IS shiny. I did however use my own conditioner, perhaps they havent perfected theirs yet.

-I usually get the dark brown because it always fades but is also always looks black at first. My hair right now is actually dark brown and does not look black, just dark. Im very happy with the color. I also looks really nice with the highlights i had underneath.

All in all, i like this product. After reading these comments, i am pleasantly surprised with the results and very satisfied. Hope this helps!

I have been dying my hair since i was a little girl, ninish! im 26 and this dye wrecked my hair. My ends are stiff and straw like, fried!!! I don’t suggest this product at all!!

  27. Brittany April 6, 2012 at 6:28 pm #

I just died my hair the blackest black as a touch up my hair is always very soft shiny and healthy but after using this dye my hair feel like there is residue left over and it feels dried out I’m hoping when I wash my hair again this feeling will go away. I do love the strong color though!

  28. Cynthia April 9, 2012 at 6:40 pm #

I wasscared after reading the reviews because I was reading them once the product was in my hair. I found it went on well but was very thick contrary to what other people have said. The bottle is quite small so if your hair is past your shoulders you will need two boxes (I wish they said that on the box).

While I was coloring, I appreciated that there was barely any smell since I have a one year old sleeping in the adjacent room. Because the cream is very thick it did not run at all which was nice. When I washed my hair, I did do a light hydrating shampoo before the conditionner and didn’t have the problems with dryness.

I have very dark hair and I bought this product because it said it was perfect for colored hair. I tried the light cinnamon color (253?) and have to admit that I didn’t see a big difference even though the side of the box said it would work on dark hair. It did leave my hair very shinny though which was a plus.

I would recommend GOSH if you are going darker however if you are trying to lighten your hair I don’t think it’s the right product. I was disappointed that my hair didn’t get any lighter however I did look at it like an expensive conditionning treatment.

  29. Debi July 11, 2012 at 12:23 pm #

Well I tried this product a month ago for a root touch up and to cover the grey, my mother picked it out because it was on sale so I chose the 101 blonde. I had a wedding to attend to on the weekend so I thought I would apply the dye early friday morning before going to work. I opened up the package (as it was sealed) and proceeded with the directions to color my hair. I noticed after 15 minutes the top of my hair was black and I was a little alarmed but I left it on for fifteem minutes as the directions suggested.I then wrinsed and my hair was BLACK!!!! The developer in the box did not match as it had been switched, I was mortified!!!! I had to call in sick to work with a legitimate bad hair day excuse and phoned the 1-800 number on the box freaking out!!! I was told to use Head & Shoulders to remove the color…..did not work……needless to say I could not get it out and no salon would toc=uch me that morning as I got the excuse saying it was a home dye and was way too fresh…..YIKES…..I had to pin my hair up for this wedding looking like a skunk and was totally depressed. I did then eventually go to a salon after paying too much money to get it conditioned and recolored. I do have to say that GOSH says they are compensating me for my troubles but I have yet to see it in the mail.

Would I use it again? Leery yes but I did not get the color I wanted so I think I would be willing to try it again but of course in my shade……

Hi everyone, I purchased the ‘226 Medium Brown’ box dye & also dyed my hair last night. I would have to say that GOSH is by far the best at-home hair colouring system out there! It spreads nicely & also take to your hair very efficiently. I had my hair mostly blonde before hand by salon highlights. My natural hair colour is dark brown, so this product really worked for me & left my hair looking vibrant & had different tones to it. It looks very nice! As some people may have bad reviews on here, but it all depends on how you use it.

Debi- usually in hair dying boxes, it uaually says you should do a text on a few strands of hair first to check for the colour, if it’s the right one and/or for allergies. Maybe you should try that before box dying, also you can tell the colour change when you mix Step 1 & 2 together & wait a minute or so. Also, some sneaky bastards like to switch hair dye bottles & seal it back up so it looks like it was never open. Try getting the next few boxes closest to the back!

For people that say their hair was sticky & what not, did you guys wash it out completely until the water was clear? When I box dye my hair I usually repeat Step 3 (the conditioner) while in the shower. That helps a LOT & leaves your hair soft & silky smooth!

To get the best results for dying your hair.. Try not washing your hair for about 2 days prior. The “dirtier” the hair, the better for me anyway!

Although there is only one downside for me, there isn’t enough of the product even after you mix Step 1 & 2. I had to get someone to run to the store for me & get another box, and I only have sholder lenght hair, a little bit past the sholder actuallty. I also used it sparingly. So I would also recommend getting 2 boxes.

For people who are have dark hair (who have previously dyed their hair dark) & wanting to go lighter. Go to a salon, because unless you have virgin hair, you’re not going to get the colour that is on the box, lol. Trust me.. I am 20 years old & have been dying my hair ever sense I was 12, when I started to get greys.. Talk about embarrassing! :p

But anyway, I just thought I would share my experience with you all & I hope you all find the colour & brand that is for you! Everyone has their own opinion & everyone is different.. It’s all about finding what works for YOU! Good luck :)

    Hi Jessica,

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! I’m glad that this product worked for you.

I have just used 210 light brown on my hair and it was horrible. while the cream was on my hair it felt dry and did not seem to cover my grey. when i was rinsing my hair it felt dry and then i applied the conditioner and i used the whole thing in one go ans still my hair felt dry and i was washing it. the overall colour was horrible did not match no way near the box and i know they are not suppose to by my hair was no way near any of the colours it looks like dark blonde and very flat.

when my hair was dry and i did not use an hairdry as i was scared incase my hair broke it was that dry it looked dull and horrible.

I would never recommend this to anyone and i colour my hair every few months. i will go back to the one i use to use where it leaves my hair soft and shiney.

please be aware that this product drys your hair out. sorry Gosh.

Hi.. I started using this product about 6-9 mths ao… I absolutely luv it!! But when I went to the usually place I buy it I found that they discontinued it and was very sad!! I don’t know where to buy it in Sudbury ON!! I have probably more grey than dark hair and this is the best dye I have ever used!! My hair stays nice and dark even when it starts to grow out the rest is still dark!! I NEED THIS DYE!! My friends all compliment me on how great my hair looks!! HELP PLEASE!!

In Canada, Gosh is sold at Shoppers Drug Mart. If you can’t find it at your local one, try asking friends or relatives to pick it up for you from a different location.

I tried GOSH 336 today with much reluctance due to the majority of these comments. I already purchased the box, so I felt committed. The results are acceptable. It is darker than the box indicated, much darker. But its a rich, vibrant colour with some shine. Maybe not as much shine as other products provide. I do not find my hair overly dry either. I don’t expect I will use their product again, but wouldn’t tell someone to never try it.

  36. Judy October 12, 2012 at 11:57 am #

I’ve been using this product for over a year now, and I’m quite happy with it. I actually began to use it because it’s made in Europe and I know they have higher standards when it comes to toxic and carcinogenic chemicals than we have in Canada, so I’m hoping it means that I’m protecting myself a bit more. My hair has a lot of grey now, and is super soft (hairdressers call it “chicken fluff”), so this dye gives me a little more body, which is a great thing! I will keep on using it.

  37. sandy November 29, 2012 at 8:15 am #

To Ray: I have just colored my hair three days ago. It is too dark, can I re-colour with a lighter shade within the week, as I am leaving the country?

  38. Suzy January 1, 2013 at 5:19 pm #

I purchased this product twice now and don’t recommend it for thin hair. Figured the first time may have been the user, but definately the product since the second experience was the same if not worse. My hair feels like straw constantly. I have to leave conditioner in my hair at night. The second time I used it, I had to get my hair cut trimming over 1 inch all around to get rid of the dryness it caused and the left over color still makes my hair feel like straw. My hair feels like it has been stripped of all nutrients. I can honestly say it is not for all hair types.

It’s like life in general, what may work for one person, has a completely different effect on the next one. If you have thin hair esp., I would definately not recommend purchasing this product. Bleaching your hair does not affect your hair the way this did.

I have been dying my hair for over 20 years. I have tried everything on the market (my fave was Fudge but it is in the UK) and have had salon colouring done as well. I have to say that for my hair type (thick, curly, dry) and my colouring (naturally dark ashy blonde–dying dark blonde) this is the best product in Canada right now. Most complaints are from dark hair that I read here. I have found this product is enough for my shoulder length hair and it does not dry out my hair. I have been using it for two years now and it does not turn brassy like most on the market for my colour. I have had great grey coverage and the most amount of compliments on my colour. It leave colour on skin but so does nice and easy and any of the 10 minute colour on the market. It comes off very easily. I find most people want to do home colour quickly and don’t take the care to apply it as if a professional was doing it. Any home colour is messy if you just glop it on your hair and hope for a miracle. Take your time or get a buddy to help you.

I used Gosh Hair colour for the first time today. I chose the product because it was new and i thought i could use a change. A lesson learned…. I chose the colour that i always use which is dark blonde. I will never use the product again as it was really awful… to start it was so runny, it was dripping all down my neck and back. It actually dripped on my bath mat so that is now ruined, along with the tshirt that i was wearing. It did not cover my gray at all. Also my hair felt horrible when i was washing the colour out and feels sticky with a very dry brittle texture. The smell was also very strong. My husband could not beleive that i was putting something on my hair that smelled so bad. I have had to go and buy the product that i always use and will have to redo my hair. I certainly would not recommend this product to anyone.

I must say I am scared, I bought this dye because i love the make-up line (the dye is in my hair now), now reading negative comments I am scared to wash it out!

Well too late to do anything now! Good luck! Let us know how it turned out!

  44. jessie May 28, 2013 at 10:47 pm #

GOOD NEWS! my hair has not been ruined, i’ve been dying my hair since i was 11, and i really think i know what i’m doing. i was so worried when i read these comments, my hair got a little hard with the dye in it which is unusual, but after a good rinse and applying the conditioner as instructed (and following through with my GOSH heat spray and then my GOSH shine serum) i had no issues at all!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :D I found this was a very natural looking color that I am not really used to. I usually go with the super dark-black brown with bleached, almost white highlights (a dramatic look i really like) after using “frost and glow” for my highlights i REALLY REALLY liked the color, something very subtle.
I didnt find it was as glossy as the other brands but the gloss usually goes away anyways after awhile!
    overall, super happy!

I am a believer that following instructions that come with a product is very important, especially when it comes to your hair!! a girl needs her hair!!
    will deffinatly buy again!!!
    THANKS GOSH!!!

I suggest you all read about the terrifying experience that happened to me after using GOSH hair colour. You will think twice about using it.

man alive, damn I wished I would have done my homework first. I have NEVER used this product and noticed it one day while I was at Shoppers, I selected 123 Medium Golden Blonde. This company should have the pants sued off of them. There are comments dating back to 2010 with complaints about how “runny” this is. I had the old tshirt one, towel wrapped and pinned like a bib , cream around the hair line and behind the ears. I am here to tell you this product is NOT cream , its a liquid , it just started pouring out of the container and before I could even grabbed the towel which was just around my neck it had ran down my temple and cheek and into my tshirt . I got a warm soapy wash cloth and washed it off. Thought I didn’t wait long enough for it to thicken up or something. Damn did it again, so just put the junk in the garbage where it belongs. Now I have a huge red welt on the side of my face. There is a consumer protection law and this is blatant false advertising. it is not cream it is liquid…..Never again and anyone on my f/b page will read about it as well. I noticed Clementine’s was deleted after she posted a warning.

Bought GOSH 134 “Dark Blonde” – read the instructions, which mentioned a mixing tray and comb, (other dyes I use do not provide this, so I thought “Hmm ok, something different, cool!”) – I proceed to take the tubes of dye/mixture etc out of the box – There was no mixing tray, no comb, so the instructions provided rendered useless to me, as I had to apply it like regular ol’ do-it-at-home hair dye. Whatever, fair enough. I part my hair, begin with my roots, as per usual procedure. Typically, when I dye my hair, I like to start with my roots, any hair surrounding the frame of my face, then begin dying the separated strands and work around my head clockwise. Well, before I could even reach the back of my head, the hair dye ran out. I have medium length hair, and usually this is NEVER a problem for me with other dyes. I was very disappointed, frustrated, and feel as though I wasted my money. I only ever dye my hair once every 3 weeks/a month. Never have I had to dye it two days in a row, nor do I want to, as my hair is sensitive to dye and I don’t want to damage it. Unfortunately, I’ll have to wait until tomorrow when my hair becomes unwashed, march back to the store, and (unfortunately) buy the same shade from Gosh and finish the job.

To sum it up, I do not recommend this hair dye. There are WAY better brands out there that do the job better, and for a better price. Very disappointed with GOSH.
