Every summer, I go through a phase where I want to get fit. Believe it or not this isn’t about looking good in a bathing suit. I’m not much of a swimmer and Calgary doesn’t usually get hot enough to warrant sitting out in the sun all day. I’m not even interested in losing weight. I’d just like to be more fit: stronger and healthier. There are different reasons for the aspirations towards getting fit, but this year, it’s because my brother in law’s wedding is coming up, and the fitter I am, the better I look in pictures.
So I went to what’s arguably the largest gym chain in North America – Gold’s Gym – and got a personal trainer. I knew that if I wanted to see a real difference, I would need the help of a professional, and Gold’s paired me up with just that.
My trainer – Bobbie – is tough and inspiring at the same time. She’s a fitness competition participant, and is in the midst of training for a competition the same weekend as the big wedding. It was fate – her counting down towards something reminds me that I have a countdown to do too. That she’s working towards a goal helps me feel better about mine. As I strain to do lunges and squats, she stands next to me saying: 8 more weeks!
The intense professionalism towards fitness is the main thing that makes Gold’s Gym different from other gyms – and I’ve belonged to many. Their weights area is huge making it excellent for people serious about improving muscle tone and making muscles get bigger. Almost every single cardio machine has a TV on it meaning it’s easier to stay on and get your cardio done. And the best part is that all the trainers are super fit. All this, and Gold’s isn’t more expensive than other gyms, neither is it fancier. It’s just better for people serious about working out.
So a couple of weeks in, and I’m pretty much won over. I have 8 more weeks of working out, and you’ll get to hear all about my experiences with Bobby and what I learn along the away.
Gold’s Gym offers a 7 day trial membership – check it out here.
