Jessica Simpson goes without makeup for the cover of the May issue of Marie Claire magazine. Actually, she looks great. Better than great, even. I would be happy if I looked that good without makeup or air brushing – actually, you know what, I might look good without makeup, but I’m so used to wearing makeup all the time that sometimes I don’t have the confidence to go without it, even when I know that I can.
I try to go through periods of time where I at least don’t wear any foundations. Going foundation-less over the weekends has been working well for me. Usually, I forget about the fact that I’m not wearing any foundation right after I leave the house. It’s only when I get ready to go to bed that I realize that I’m not wearing anything on my face and so I don’t need to wash it before I go to bed! It is indeed a liberating feeling knowing that there’s no gunk to wash off at the end of the day, but Monday morning I am back to my old habits with the foundation.
Over the years, however, I have streamlined my regimen a little. I don’t wear concealer unless I absolutely have to. If I know that I haven’t gotten a good amount of sleep for a few nights in a row, I will check for dark circles and then cover them up, but for day to day wear, I’ll just make sure I get the area under my eyes with foundation and then call it a day. I find the coverage is much lighter and more natural looking. Which makes me wonder whether people around me realize that I’m wearing foundation…
I can see how a celebrity not wearing makeup and not being retouched for the cover of an international magazine is a big deal – there is so much pressure to look perfect all the time or risk the wrath of the public – which I also understand… you’re paid to look better than we ever could, and so you better be looking good if you want to do your job.
What do you think of the Marie Claire cover? Is going without makeup a big deal to you?
