L’Oreal HiP Kohl Eyeliner?

l'oreal kohlI thought this was a great concept, given that kohl is a makeup product used in many foreign countries but many westerners are weary of because it’s been known to contain harmful additives, such as lead. I also wanted to try it because my grandma uses black kohl eyeliner inside the lower rim of her eyes on a daily basis. How did L’Oreal’s version match up in comparison? Quite simply, it didn’t.

The kohl my grandma uses is something she purchased from a cosmetics company exclusive to India. It lasts her all day, staying matte and clean without giving her raccoon eyes.

The L’Oreal kohl in black was gone by lunch time and when I reapplied, it didn’t last until the end of the day. I tried using it to create a smoky eye, and it was just too messy for my liking. Specks of the kohl fell on my face, and trying to remove any sort of black makeup from cheeks can be difficult – it smudged and took the rest of my makeup off when I finally managed to get rid of it.

Also, the black was way too subtle. I had to apply a few layers of it for it to show up on my skin, and along with the transparent black colour, the consistency of it reminded me of coal – not something I felt like putting on my face.

The gold kohl was great for evening – instead of using it like liner, I used it in the inner corners of my eyes (on top of a primer and neutral eye shadow) and achieved a nice, wide-eyed look. Another positive – the bristles of a brush sometimes irritate my eyes if I accidently go too close, but the applicator was the perfect size to poke a bit of shimmer into the corner. I still had to be careful about it falling on my face, but gold was easier to deal with than black.

  2. When she comes back from India in a few months, I’ll have to check! Also, I’ll be reviewing better eyeliners really soon, so stay posted!

  3. Just wondering if you have tried a similar product from Guerlain? It’s quite a bit more expensive, but I wonder if it has a better staying power?

  4. Hi SB, yes, I know that Guerlain has had theirs out for a while… and the packaging of the L’Oreal one leads me to believe that they modeled theirs after the Guerlain one.

I’ve tried that one before, and the powder was really pigmented, but the lasting power was not the same as a good waterproof pencil.

  5. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Guerlain liners, I find that they stay exceptionally longer and without as much wearing on the inner rim. Stays put really well for me and the pigments are to DIE for!

  6. I forgot to note that the applicators for both are different! L’Oreal uses a pointy sponge while Guerlain has a hard top.

Kimberly, do you find that the Guerlain liner flakes as you try to apply it?

  7. I like to tap some out of the container and apply it with an angle brush; it goes on nice and smooth with no flaking, and a little bit goes a VERY long way.

  8. Yeah, I tried to use this liner that way as well and it was kind of hit and miss. I haven’t tried that with the Guerlain though… there’s something to be said for using the applicator that comes with it though. Yes, it makes a great liner, but it’s not really giving that Kohl look is it?

  9. No you’re right I’d say it’s less of a kohl look. I never got used to using the applicator stick so I always use my angle brush. My favourite thing to do for a fresh burst of colour is to use the brush to draw the liner on my lower inner rim and just underneath. It’s nice and smooth, smudges beautifully and stays put afterward. My favourite is the teal colour!
