Book Review: Scent and Subversion

Madame Rochas perfume ad, (image from the book Scent and Subversion by Barbara Herman.) I like this so much better than an ad with a celebrity. What do you think?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

TextIf you’re interested in some insightful reading this summer, check out Scent and Subversion (it’s not new, so your local library might even have it). It takes you through the history of some popular vintage perfumes, accompanied by images of the bottles and the ads that went with them.

Shelfie

The favs these days. Which ones have you used? I know a few people saw me post about the Naturewell creams on Insta, and went and found them at Walmart.  There is also a Vitamin C version of these creams!

Eau du Soir and Soir d’Orient

Eau du Soir (from 2010), and Soir d’Orient (2015).

TextBecause I’m fairly familiar with Sisley’s perfumes, I was pretty confident blind-buying Soir d’Orient. It is a spicy-rose-chypre and I read some reviews from those who had both scents and mentioned their similarities. Sisley loves chypre-style scents, and their chypre base is iconic.

Soir d’Orient has the same sharpness as Eau du Soir, but with spicy rose in its opening. The spice fades (or maybe I get used to it), but the rose stays and the chypre base is a hit of freshness. This perfume has a zesty bite that is so refreshing! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

All that is great but Soir d’Orient is not as potent or as long-lasting as Eau du Soir. I don’t mind. I think of Eau du Soir as perfect for going out, and Soir d’Orient better for staying in when I don’t mind if my scent fades a little. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Both of these are great summer scents. They’re interesting and have a sharp freshness. Soir d’Orient has a freshness that’s less sharp but it’s still there, and I enjoy it. This is also a highly complimented scent for me!

Bali Body and Pixi Beauty Empties

A couple of empties:

Bali Body SPF 15 lip balm from Australia, and Pixi Beauty Rose Tonic. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Text

The coconut lip balm was great, if a little oily. Ironically, it did not hold up in the sun and melted super quickly. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I liked the Pixi Rose Tonic more than I thought I would. Yeah, it’s a basic formula of glycerin, rose-water, and not much else, but I liked it for when my skin was dry and needed something gentle. It’s also great for taking off the last remnants of mascara or makeup.

Diptyque Do Son Review

Unpopular opinion: big white florals are overrated.

TextThis @Diptyque number can stay though. Diptyque Do Son is a tuberose scent that is woody, earthy and to my nose almost smells creamy, and smooth.

It’s fresh but warm at the same time. But even though it’s warm, it works on a sunny day without being cloying. I think it’s the earthiness that keeps it from being too much. There’s also a soapy musk in the base, out of the bottle it reminds me of Glossier You but it doesn’t stick around very long and doesn’t smell too clean. It’s so wearable, it’s no wonder it’s a classic. I keep coming back to it.

Tarte Shape Tape Collection Now in Canada

Tarte Shape Tape is now available in Canada (check their website and Sephora). This is a heavily pigmented long-wearing concealer available in 38 COLOURS! Because it is so pigmented, I find that I only need a bit of concealer where I need it. That means less chance of creasing.

Text

I’ve got some of the other Shape Tape accessory products too. The setting spray, setting powder, glow powder, and highlighter. I like all of them, actually! Not a dud to be found in this lineup.

You can see that I have the concealer in medium honey 35H and it’s such a perfect match that I can sheer it out and use it as foundation too.  I also like putting the setting spray on before anything else because it seems to help everything stick better.

Basically, if you powder and use setting spray before and after your look, it’ll help things last so much longer.

Neutrogena Skin Balancing Cleansers

Some texture for your feed. Three new cleansers from Neutrogena and they’re interesting! A foaming gel, a cleansing clay, and a cream. Something for all skin types and I honestly love them all but if I were going away I’d leave the clay one at home and pack the other two.

Antipodes Culture Probiotic Night Recovery Cream

TextGive me Hyaluronic acid and humectants but make it pink and smelling of roses.

This is a lovely light cream for oily skin. It’s not greasy enough for dry skin but if you have fairly unproblematic skin and can get by with a serum and a light lotion at night, then this @antipodesskincare Culture Probiotic Night Recovery cream is for you.

Retinol Body Cream from Naturewell

Hands up if you sometimes put retinoids on your body.

I do, and the only thing preventing me from doing it more is that the tube of retinol is SO SMALL.

Text

Well, now there’s Retinol body cream from Naturewell Beauty and you can find it at Walmart. When I posted about this body cream on my Insta, everyone was excited about it – turns out that retinol on our bodies is the one thing that’s been missing from our routines, and we want to add it back in.  I’m glad I wasn’t the only one excited about this!

This cream actually has Retinol and Retinyl Palmitate in the ingredient list, and no, they’re not listed right at the bottom either (swipe to see). While these forms of retinol are not as strong as prescription, they’re still effective, they’re just more gentle and take more time to act on your skin.

The cream is creamy and moisturizing but not greasy. It absorbs fairly quickly. It is more of a lotion than a body butter. I love that this tub is so large and I believe it comes in a larger size as well. There is also a pump available but reviews suggest that it is not the most effective and getting lotion out of the jar.  Someone asked my if it made my skin the way that retinol on your face can, and I’d have to say that even after using it every day, I haven’t noticed that.  This is not very moisturizing, but it didn’t make my skin more dry than usual. If you have very dry skin or your skin is prone to dryness, then use an oil on top of this and see if it helps!

Have you used retinol on your body? Did it work?

Between $18-$20 and available at Walmart.
