Fall’s Best Moisturizers

Come fall, it’s time to put away the light moisturizing mists and take out the serious moisturizers that can take you into winter. No matter where you live, the weather is more dry and if you can take care of your skin early enough, you’ll be able to avoid pesky dry patches appearing in the winter. Here are some of our favourite fall moisturizers, including some favourites from the drugstore.

BOD_NiveaSoft_jar_v2_1308

Nivea Soft ($12). Keep the original Nivea cream for the winter, and use Nivea Soft this fall. It’s got a lighter fluffier texture that makes it easier to rub in.

garnier body repair intense

Garnier Body Repair Intensive Repairing Lotion ($5.99). This body lotion has a soothing feel and contains Canadian maple extract which helps bind hydrators to skin. The Garnier Body Repair line also includes a body balm, but we found the lotion soothed our skin without being too heavy.

l'occitane rose tendresse body cream

L’Occitane Ultra Rich Body Cream ($28). This rich cream has 25% shea butter that works hard on even the most dry skin. This fall, L’Occitane offers their cream in a “Flowers of Love” collection – scents of Rose, Violet, or Jasmine scent their best-selling cream and lip balms.

biotherm baume corps

Biotherm Baume Corps Body Balm ($39). This light-feeling body lotion is enriched with nourishing oil so it packs more of a punch than regular body lotions.

L’Occitane Ultra Rich Shea Butter Body Cream Saves My Winter Skin

This is an amazingly thick, rich body cream.  Here’s a picture of a little travel size that I got!

It’s got a whopping 25% Shea Butter which means that it’s ultra-creamy, and yes, a little bit greasy. But that’s why I use it. The grease kind of makes sure that it stays on your skin, and if you put it on at night in the morning you’ll have ultra soft, fully moisturized skin. This is especially wonderful on dry feet and hands and just one of those products you’ll want to have on your night table, within reach. You can find L’Occitane stores all over Canada and the U.S. or you can check out their website!

$50.

Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti Dark Circle Roller Review

I have been a huge fan of under-eye-rollers forever, and if you like something cool under your eyes, you should check these out.  These are basically eye serums or creams deposited through what’s essentially a giant ballpoint pen filled with said cream.  The ballpoint is made of metal so it’s cold, and it feels refreshing as you apply the serum to your eye area.  It’s a great idea because it provides immediate relief which is key when your eyes are tired.  I use mine to give me relief on particularly long days or while I’m waiting for a face mask to dry.

The Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti Dark Circle Roller goes one step further by tinting its product.  Before you all start hating, know that it comes in a medium tone now, and that’s the only reason that I’m reviewing it.  I can actually try it now and report to you guys!

As you apply it to your eye area, you’re essentially spreading more and more of the tinted eye cream, and instead of rubbing in as it would do with your hands, it just sits there and builds up.  The best way to use this is to dab it under your eyes and then blend it into your makeup with your fingers.  It’s easy enough to do, and you get a bit of the cooling sensation too because it’s in the product as well as the roller.  After using this, I noticed that it did a pretty good job of disguising redness and purple shades under my eyes, and blended to a sheer matte finish.

Get it online, about $16.

Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Underpainting Color Correction Palette

You’re going to want this: the formula is actually longer lasting than most foundations so if you ever have trouble getting concealer or corrector to stay on your skin and make a difference, you don’t have to worry about that anymore.

Take a look at the beauty that is Make Up For Ever’s Ultra HD Underpainting Color Correction Palette.

Formulated with 2 correctors and 2 concealers, this palette has everything you need to target your skin’s concerns.  Whether it’s redness or sallow skin, bluish under-eye circles, or hyperpigmentation, you’ll be able to target it with this palette.

And this isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing either.  There’s a palette for every colour family in Make Up For Ever’s foundation offerings – so 6 in total – from very light to deep.  My palette is the 30 palette in medium and it’s the best one for me because my foundation shades are always in the 300’s if I’m wearing Make Up For Ever.

The creams are blendable, highly pigmented, and best of all, they really stick to your skin and last the whole day.  That’s really the difference between something high end and something low end. The high-end products will last on your face, while the low-end products won’t.  At the end of my day, my dark circles are still covered – because that’s primarily what I’m using the palette for – even if my other makeup has faded.

I use the peach shade under my eyes – because it’s color correcting, it doesn’t look peach at all.  The olive shades goes over any redness which is usually around my nose. The other two shades are mixable to kind of wash everything else out.

Pick it up for $55.  Online or at Sephora.

How Universkin Gives You Truly Customized Skin Care

How much time do you spend on your skincare routine?

We’re not just talking about your daily application routine. Consider all of the time you spend looking to find the perfect combination of products that will give you the best results. The average woman will spend close to 2.5 hours every single month going down the YouTube skincare rabbit hole.

The problem with all of that research is that you often end up with a product that works great for the YouTuber or influencer, but not so great for you.

In an effort to help women take back all of this time, one of Toronto’s finest plastic surgeons is now offering a single solution that is completely customized to your unique skin and your unique needs.

What is Universkin?

How many skincare products are currently occupying a lot of shelf space in your bathroom? The average woman currently owns 16. How many of them actually work?

Universkin can help you simplify things by giving you a single physician-strength product in a fully-customized mix.

The Universkin Serum P base contains:

  • Omega 3
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Vitamin E
  • Biomimetic peptides

These ingredients are already a great start in helping to soothe inflamed skin. From there, a skincare expert will analyze your skin to help you determine exactly what will work for you. They will then customize a mixture of 3 physician-strength active ingredients.

This process used to be done in-office, but it’s now done virtually during COVID-19 restrictions.

What Does Universkin Do?

It does whatever you need it to do. You’re getting a customized mixture of ingredients to suit your skin, instead of a factory-made mix that tries to work for everyone.

The 19 active ingredients can be customized to treat traditional issues like blemishes, oily skin, redness, or dehydration. But they can also do amazing things for bigger challenges like resurfacing, retexturing, and helping with volume loss.

How Often Do You Use it?

Your skincare routine probably consists of about 6 different things right now. Some of these things may, or may not, be working for you. You may be trying some things out on a trial basis to see if they work.

Universkin simplifies things by just giving you a single step, twice a day. You also get to remove all of the stuff that you’re not sure about and use something that is customized to work for you.

When Will I See Results?

Getting medical-grade ingredients in bespoke mixes means that you can see results much faster. You could see results after 1 week, instead of waiting for a month or more.

Your expert will also follow up with you after about 6 to 8 weeks to see how things are going. From there, they can add or remove ingredients to give you optimal results.

Will Universkin work for you? We don’t have to tell you that there are no guarantees in skincare. But the fact that it is designed to work just for you means that it stands a real chance of simplifying your routine, and clearing up some space on the bathroom counter.

You can also take comfort in knowing that Universkin is backed by one of the top Toronto plastic surgery clinics. You should check it out!

La Roche-Posay Mela-D Pigment Control Serum

The more research I do, the more I see that the best defense against a few skin conditions is to use products that offer a variety of solution-based ingredients in them.  For me that means that instead of just using glycolic acid for smoother skin and the lightening of acne scars, I might want to use something that pairs glycolic acid with other ingredients that help with brightness.

That’s why I’ve added La Roche Posay’s Mela-D Pigment Control Serum to my regimen.  It pairs glycolic acid with Kojic Acid to resurface skin and target dark spots.  I’ve been using it for a few weeks and I’m noticing a difference already.

You can use it at night time – but don’t pair it with other actives because it is quite potent on its own. As always, use sunscreen to make sure you prevent more pigmentation issues.

$39.99 where La Roche Posay products are sold.

The ONLY After-Sun Lotion I Like

…you’ll want to pick this up if you’re going to spend any time in the sun, and I realize that might not be for a while, but maybe you’re going somewhere nice.  Maybe you already are somewhere nice.

Bioderma After Sun

Too often, “After-Sun” lotions are too light, not moisturizing enough, and made up of alcohol so that they feel cool on the skin.  That’s why I seldom review them because I never use them myself.

But here’s one I like because it’s lightly moisturizing.  Moisturizing enough to hydrate, but light enough so that it doesn’t feel annoying or sticky on the skin.  Basically, this is the perfect summer lotion.

I’m loving Bioderma’s Photoderm After Sun lotion because it now comes in a huge 500 ml bottle.

Bioderma is a French pharmacy brand that makes amazing lotions. They are nicely fragranced and really hydrate the skin for a long time.

This bottle is $26.90 and even if used regularly, should last you through the whole summer. Available online.

My Skincare Routine

…sooo with all the masks and moisturizers I’ve been featuring, I figured it’s time to share what I’m using all the time on a day to day basis.

I’ve said that my skin keeps feeling dry and it got to the point where it broke out a few weeks ago because it just needed some TLC.  I quit using everything else, and applied some good old-fashion organic cold-pressed coconut oil to my face and the breakouts cleared up in a day!  My skin still felt dry to the touch (oily but dry if that makes any sense), but after three days, it was back to its own healthy self!

So now, I’m back to using my retinols, glycolics, and my trusty on a daily basis.Bioderma Atoderm Shower Gel

In the morning, I first wash with Bioderma Atoderm gentle shower gel.  It comes in a huge 500 ml bottle and I’ve barely made a dent in it.  Then I apply the Vitamin C, let it sink in for a few minutes, and then apply the coconut oil on top.  I literally need a tiny amount to cover my whole face and neck.  Sometimes I use my favourite spf lotion on top, Neutrogena’s Waterlight Sunscreen.

Skinceuticals C E FerulicNeutrogena water light

I let that sink in for a couple of minutes, and then apply Vichy’s new Teint Ideal foundation on top.  I use the fluid for combination skin, so it’s pretty matte once you apply it, but because of the coconut oil and the bit of shimmer in the foundation, the resulting look is totally dewy. No sunscreen because the foundation is SPF 20 and I’m applying it on my face and neck.

What I love about the coconut oil is that my makeup goes on so smoothly.  I apply the foundation, and then cream blush, bronzer to contour, and it all just blends in.  Sometimes I add powder on top and sometimes I don’t – regardless, it just sinks in and looks natural not cakey.

At night, I’m using a retinol or glycolic acid again but without the resulting tight feeling on my skin in the morning. I either use the Neutrogena Retinol cream, or Skinceuticals Retinol cream, or a Glycolic 20 lotion.  It’s a lot of exfoliating, so a couple times a week I’ll take a night off and just use more coconut oil.

My skin just feels comfortable and even if it is dry, I’m again putting the coconut oil on top to keep it healthy.  It’s easy enough to do, and my skin is so happy with it. Despite all this coconut oil, my skin isn’t looking oilier than usual – my makeup is still on at the end of the day – when I wipe it with a washcloth or a makeup wipe, I can see the foundation!  So contrary to popular opinion, the extra oil won’t necessarily get rid of your makeup.

vichy masksMasks – I do one nearly every night.  Mostly a moisturizing one by Vichy which leaves my face feeling fresh and clean.  Last night I did the clay Vichy mask because I felt as if I was going to break out and that made my skin nice and matte.  It might be a bad thing, but I’ve applied them on top of my makeup, and then wipe them off with a damp washcloth – effectively taking most of my makeup off in one sweep.  Right before I go to bed, I might wash my face with soap and water again, but sometimes it depends on how tired I am, and I might not.

So far, my skin seems super happy…

What do you think of my new routine?

Bioderma Has My Favourite Gentle Bodywash

Bioderma is the next new brand that’s breaking the Internet, and if you’ve been sleeping on this French pharmacy favourite, then now is the time to wake up and take a look at the affordable but well-formulated products that they offer. Starting with this body wash.
Bioderma Atoderm Shower Gel… and some news, if I haven’t really mentioned it already: there’s a new little baby in our world and with that comes another look at things that are appropriate for baby… and the rest of us!

The Atoderm line is made for sensitive skin and the Gel Douche is a soap-free shower gel.  You can feel the difference in the first time you use it.  The lather it creates feels moisturizing instead of too soapy, and your skin isn’t dry once you wash the shower gel off.  I knew that I loved it, but the real vote of confidence came from my mom who was giving baby a bath with it: “wow, this is really nice!” she said when she first used the Atoderm Gel Douche.  So there you go.

Now, the soap is scented but lightly so.  I was super careful about scented products at first, but even the shower gel and shampoo they used at the hospital was scented, so for me, this is fine.  Still, if you have truly sensitive skin, you may want to watch out.

The shower gel is also made without parabens and made without any artificial colour.

I love it so much that I’m even washing my face with it at night.

$19.90 online.

Amika The Kure Repair Shampoo Review

A quick review of a great shampoo – Amika The Kure Repair Shampoo.  I tried a whole bunch of new Amika products this year, and this was one that I really loved.  It’s moisturizing and not harsh on your hair, but it actually washes really well too.

Amika suggests that this shampoo is good for dry hair or damaged hair, but I would say that it’s also great for those of us who like to wash our hair often and don’t want to strip it when we wash it.  I work out everyday, and so I have to wash my hair after my workout and this shampoo was great for daily washing.

You can get it at Sephora for $24.  I also love the long bottle that this comes in! I thought the packaging was so unique!
