Midnight Eyeshadow Quad from Givenchy

I was cleaning through my makeup, and pulled out this old eyeshadow quad from Givenchy. I love sparkly shadows, and played around with these from the Midnight quad, but honestly, it wasn’t a favourite of mine because the shimmer is silver and the smoky look just isn’t something I’m into right now.

This is the Givenchy Yeux Quatuor in Midnight Look #72 ($62). No longer available but Givenchy still has similar things in their makeup lineup.

What do you think? Should I keep hanging on to this quad… in case I want to use it one day, or should I get rid of it.

The Emperor of Scent

If you’re someone that’s into perfumes, then this is absolutely required reading.

The book is about scientist Luca Turin who is a biologist, and really into perfumes.  He discovers a new way of how we smell (that is, how the mechanics that send smell to our brain work) and what he has to go against to have his theory believed by other scientists.

I’m not a biologist, but Burr makes the science really easy to understand so the novel really moves along and doesn’t get boring.

Although this book is about science, I found it really interesting because Turin talks about some of the greatest perfumes of all time (most of which I have not smelled) and really tells you what’s in them and why they smell the way that they do.  He also talks about what makes a really great perfume, and it seems that it’s not as easy as it should be.

There is, of course, the question of ingredients that also comes up in the book.  Perfumers would love to use whatever they can get their hands on, but modern science has shown us that some ingredients are carcinogens, while others are not good for the environment.  While perfume companies are coming up with new ingredients all the time, the challenge is to make them smell good, to have the smell last, for them to be able to bind to other scents, for them to be non-carcinogenic, and for them not to cause great damage to the environment. It is a lengthy process, and Turin’s theory could make it so that new scent molecules are much easier to find.

You would think that the scent companies would jump on the theory and look into collaborating with Turin.

It turns out that they try – and they decide, no thanks.

The fact of the matter is that there are a lot of chemists that work for different perfume companies, and the jobs of many people rely on doing things the old-fashioned way, even if that way didn’t work that well.  So they do things the way that they want, and that’s that.

The book is about science, perfume, and economics, and it’s fascinating to see what goes into the production of something that I spritz on daily.  Further to that, almost every product I use is perfumed, and it turns out that there’s a lot riding on that too.

Like I said – those interested in perfumes must read this book.

About $20 at Amazon.

Fragrant Showers from Sisley

Sisley is well known for their great skincare offerings to most because that seems to be their main attraction at the counters – most days you can get a free mini-manicure or facial at their counters which serves as an instant pick-me-up and a reason to get more amazing skincare sets.

But the brand is known to perfume aficionados for their scent offerings.  They have some very unique scents that call out to people because they are so well-blended.  No, this is not a brand that has 5 or even 10 scents at their counters.  This family company makes their scents one by one and only when they feel like a scent is right to tell their own particular story of the year.  A prime example: Soir de Lune was launched 15 years after Eau de Soir came out.

All their scents are real gems – you never know what exactly it is you’re smelling which is a sign that they’re well-blended and totally unique.  You also won’t find anything that hints of sweets in their scents which is what I like.  I realize that Pink Sugar is a best-seller at Sephora, but I guess I’m in the minority when I say that I’d rather smell of a garden of roses than of last night’s dessert.

Alors, Sisley has a Soir de Lune shower gel, and people, it is absolutely amazing.  I put one pump on my shower puff to get an amazing scent throughout the bathroom.  Think coriander, pepper, mandarin, musk, patchouli, and sandalwood in a well-blended concoction of a shower gel.  The scent is fresh but musky – it reminds me of walking through a garden after early morning rain.  I love this so much that after using it, it promptly goes out of the shower and gets tucked away in a cupboard until I’d like to use it again – this one is not for sharing!

You can get this shower gel and other Sisley scents at Holt Renfrew where this retails for $110.  It is so much more than just a shower gel because of its ability to transport you to a fresh garden with just one pump.

The Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer

This was on sale for Amazon Prime day, and I just want you to know that it’s on sale again, so if you wanted to try it, you can. $54.99 here.

I did get one when it was on sale and I love it.  It’s the only way I blow dry my hair now and I can’t imagine going to something different.  Sometimes I use my straighter but most times I don’t need to.

Do you have one? Do you use it?

This was the hottest hair dryer of 2019 – friends of mine who weren’t even into blow-drying their hair recommended it to me, and I heard from everyone that I had to get it.

I think that one of the things that made it so attractive is that it’s just $60 (or at least it is at the time that I’m writing this), and so you can’t lost a lot if you don’t LOVE it.  You also don’t have to really worry if you don’t use it every day.

Compare that to the reviews I’ve heard about the Dyson Air-Wrap styler.  Not one person who’s bought it has told me that it’s worth the $650 that it costs, and the only people who have raved about it have been the influencers who got it for free. The price really makes people consider if it’s worth it – and most people either returned it or think that life is fine without it.

I still don’t have a Revlon One-Step but I’m considering it.  You can get it here.

Glaxal-Base Colloidal Oatmeal + Aloe Moisturizing Cream

Did you know that colloidal oatmeal in a concentration of 1% can have a positive impact on eczema relief? It won’t get rid of it completely but it could help with the itchiness that eczema often brings.  This Glaxal Base Oatmeal and Aloe Moisturizing Cream is really helping keep flaky skin at bay.  As with any treatment, you need to use it regularly to see a difference.

It’s been a month of my family using this and I’ve found that it helps but nothing is really a cure.  Run that humidifier and best of luck.

Makeup Minis

I’m really into mini everything right now – I’m finding that they’re a good way to try something without investing in the full size which you may or may not like.  I’m finding this especially true for perfume, dry shampoo, and other hair products.

Sometimes I like something but don’t miss it when it’s gone which is a sign that I didn’t really need it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Fenty Mascara Review Video

I got the Fenty mascara, and here’s the review!

Normally, I do get my mascara from the drugstore, and after spending $32 on this, I think I’ll be going back there. Even the most expensive drugstore brand is 50% less than this, and I’m sure I can find something good. This did make my lashes look amazing. Watch to find out more.

EOS Hand Cream

Can you believe that this hand cream is only $2.99?  It’s true.

I’ve really enjoyed using it the month that I’ve had it – I love the delicious coconut scent and the dreamy consistency that it has.  It’s hydrating and feels light on your skin.  It absorbs quickly and leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth.

Available in drugstores!

Hair, Face, Lips Favourites

Here are three products I’m loving right now.

Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer with SPF 45 works really well as a daily sunscreen. Also, I’ve been wearing a hat more than ever and it has been life changing.

Renewed love for Moroccanoil hair serum. Smells so good and leaves your hair so smooth.

Fenty Beauty Pro Kiss’r Luscious Lip Balm really is luscious and is making my lips so smooth. I would definitely repurchase this lip balm, but I’ve loved all Fenty products so far.  I’ve also loved their Gloss Bomb and have finished it.

Moroccanoil, Amika, and Olaplex Reviews

Here’s some reviews of hair products that I’ve been trying out!  I have frizzy curly hair that needs a lot of moisture, but at the same time, I don’t like anything too heavy.  I’m trying to not heat style my hair as much – it’s been 3 months since my hair saw a flat-iron and that’s new record for me!  My hair stylist said my hair looked healthy so that was a bonus.

I also dipped into some products I’ve used before to see if I still liked them, and that’s what led me to using this Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner.

Honestly, isn’t for me. Both are very creamy and moisturizing and because of how heavy they are, they feel kind of dated as formulas.  Now you can find hydrating formulas that are not so heavy.  ($28 each).

I’ve been using the Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother Styling Cream Leave-In conditioner has been my favourite new discovery. It really has the texture and finish of a leave-in, giving hair some slip and dry angling along the way. All with the technology of Olaplex. If you’ve used it then you know. I’m trying the Bonding Oil next. ⠀($38 at salons – I got mine from Jerome Salon in Calgary).

Amika is a newer brand that I’ve been getting into, and this Glass Action Universal Elixir is the first product that I’ve tried from them.  The Glass Action Elixir is a really concentrated hair serum. It was ok. There such a fine line between using too much, and just enough with this one but if you use the right amount it leaves hair shiny and smooth.  $37 on Amazon.
