3 Oil Cleansers Reviewed

Who has tried oil cleansers?

If you haven’t, then you need to because they are game changers. The oil cleansers melt away oil, sunscreen, and makeup off your skin and just leave it so clean.

I’ve got a new Cocokind oil to milk cleanser from Shoppers Drug Mart which works especially well with a cleansing cloth. ($24.99 at Shoppers Drug Mart.)

The Boscia Makeup Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil smells amazing – like a spa- and easily emulsified everything. ($42 for a full size, the image in the picture was a travel size at Sephora.)

The Algenist Genius Melting Cleanser is maybe my favourite because it washes away completely clean even without a wash cloth. ($50 at Sephora.)

Oil cleansers are for all types of skin types.  If you have oily skin, they are great for working with the oils in your skin to take them off.  If you have combination skin, they work to get everything balanced, and if you have dry skin then they cleanse without stripping.  My least favourite kind of oil or balm cleanser is one that doesn’t leave a residue, and none of the above do.

Rimmel’s the Only 1 Matte Lipstick

Posted about these lipsticks today on Insta-Stories (find me, canadianbeautydotcom) and I thought this review was worth revisiting because these lipsticks really are holding up even though they are now discontinued.  They came out in 2017.

The best matte lipstick is from the drugstore!

Rimmel’s new The Only 1 Matte Lipstick is quickly becoming my favourite lipstick. Formulated with moisturizers, and created to last all day, this matte lipstick delivers a punch of colour with just one swipe. Best of all, the colour lasts through eating and drinking and maybe needs reapplication only mid-day. Although the lipstick is matte and seriously long-wearing, it goes on super smooth and doesn’t dry my lips out. They’re dryer than usual because of wearing lipstick, but no more dry than any other lipstick.

This is an all-day, every day lippie. You can wear it out because it lasts so long, but it’s also perfect for the daytime because you won’t have to worry about your look.

There are 10 shades available and they’re all lovely. Nudes, bright pinks, reds, burgundies, even a trendy purple are all there and are equally well-pigmented and easy to wear. I really love that just one swipe totally covers my natural lip colour and saturates my lips. The high level of pigment also helps this last on your lips and leave pigment there when the creaminess of the lip colour wears off.

Pick it up at drugstores for $7.99.

Viva Glam VI SE

This is from the archives – from 2009 – but it made me think that I haven’t bought a Viva Glam lipstick in a while, and I haven’t heard anyone else get one either!  What do you guys think about Viva Glam lippies? Do you try them because the proceeds go towards a good cause?

I love Viva Glam lipsticks from MAC. I own every single one so far, and what makes me keep buying them is that they’re mostly wearable pinks that look good on almost everyone!

My favourite is the Viva Glam V, but a close second is the new shade, Viva Glam VI SE (special edition). This lippie is a blue pink lustre that looks like “your lips but better” and it’s a good change from the original Viva Glam VI that is a brownish-pink lustre. Both colours are also available as lipglasses if that’s more your style. The SE lipstick will be available for just a year, soif you want your perfect pink color, head to the MAC counter soon.

As always, all the proceeds to to the MAC Aids fund so that means that your money is well spent.

Lise Watier Eye Opening Vegan Mascara Review

Opening with a look at my lashes instead of the product – I really liked this mascara!

Mascara is my desert-island makeup product.  I put it on even just to go to the grocery store, so I go through a lot of mascara.

This Lise Watier Eye Opening Vegan Mascara has a nice thin wand, as you can see in the picture below, so it really lets me get to the base of my lashes. Even though the wand looks so thin, it has a lot of product on it so I’m easily able to get tons of product on my lashes.  The formula is thick and rich and really lets you build a lot of volume without a lot of work.

I loved wearing this mascara, but it did smudge on me if it was very humid outside, but as long as I was inside in air conditioning it wore great.

$28 at Shoppers Drug Mart.

How To Do A Perfect Red Lip

You might not be showing your lips very often, now that masks are the norm, but you can still perfect your own technique.  Here are some tips.

While some see a bright red lip as just a gash of lipstick, us beauty addicts know that it’s so much more than that. Red lipstick is the ultimate beauty statement and a mark of true confidence. It’s not easy to pull off, but we can show you how to do it properly.

This year, to find out how to do a perfect red lip, we talked to Estee Lauder’s Global Premier Makeup Artist how we can do our red lip this season and he gave us some great tips.

First and formost: Blair said that you shouldn’t even try to do a red lip if you don’t plan on doing it properly. What’s proper? Using a lip liner so the red lip is perfectly lined, using a base so that the lipstick stays put, and actually finding the right color for yourself, not just picking up whatever was in your mom’s drawer or whatever you had lying around.

What’s a problem for many people is finding the perfect color for themselves.

The shade that you pick should obviously compliment your skin tone. Blair suggests that darker skin tones should try reds that have more blue in them, and lighter skin tones can go with a more orangy colour. In the collage above check out Mischa Barton and Dita Von Teese’s lipstick which is definitely on the coral side of things, whereas Kim Kardashian and Rosario Dawson are wearing clearly blue-based lippies. A blue based lipstick will make your teeth look whiter, but I would focus on the overall look when picking a great lipstick. Cool skin tones may want to try the Estee Lauder Signature Lipstick in Rich Red. Warmer skin tones might want to try Double Wear Stay-In-Place Lipstick in Stay Scarlett.

You can use Estee Lauder’s Double Wear concealer under your lipstick to even out the color of your lips and create a perfectly blank canvas. Before you go ahead and apply the lipstick, make sure that the concealer is totally dry so that it doesn’t smudge into the color.

Finally, apply a light gloss in a gold tone at the center of the lips which will make your lips look fuller. The Estee Lauder counter has tons of options when it comes to red lipsticks – they have a huge array of different shades and finishes, so I would head over there to try to find the perfect shade!

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face and Body Stick

Weightless, clear, and not at all greasy. This is how all sunscreens should be, and this one is also easily portable because of the stick formula!

I first wrote about this sunscreen in 2016 and at the time a sunscreen stick was revolutionary, and this year I wanted something portable so I dug it out of my stash and started applying, and guys, this is STILL one of the best sunscreens out there.  It’s light-weight, totally clear, and is easy to apply.  You just smooth it on to arms, legs, even on your face, and then smooth everything on with your palms, trying to get to all your hard to reach areas as best as you can.

If you’re looking for quick and easy ways to apply sunscreen, then pick this one up too!Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Sun StickI am all about innovative sunscreen formulas these days and I’m adding Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Face and Body Stick to the lineup of amazing sunscreens I have on hand.

This is a clear gel sunscreen stick (it looks kind of like clear stick deodorant, not white like those zinc formulas of yore) and it has a tiny bit of shimmer in it.

It is SPF 50+ and literally glides on so smoothly, immediately providing protection from the sun.  It’s not matte in its coverage, but not sticky or greasy either.  Just lightly moisturizing and easy to wear.  This would be great for gliding on to shoulders, legs, arms, and the back of the neck any time you feel the sun hitting you too strongly.  This stick is the ultimate in travel accessory because there’s no chance that it’ll leak – it’s perfect for the beach bag or your purse.

Available online for $13.99.

MAC Love Me Lipstick in “Hey, Frenchie!”

I got a few of the MAC Love me Lipsticks before we went into quarantine and I thought I would be wearing them all the time because of their creamy balm-like texture.  They are moisturizing and feel so comfortable on my lips and so I really thought I would be wearing them all the time.

And then we went into quarantine and there was really no reason to wear lipstick all the time, but now I think that I’m back into it so I pulled out “Hey, Frenchie!” in the MAC Love me Lipsticks because it’s a mauve-pink that I’m really into.

It’s not the kind of lipstick that’s ideal for wearing under a mask, but that’s ok.  I’m still into it.

$24 at MAC stores or online.

Physician’s Formula Rose All Day Moisturizer

A note on moisturizers and spf. You can use a moisturizer with spf as your sun protection for that day – that makes this Physician’s Formula Rose All Day moisturizer great. It also has a tiny bit of shimmer in it and makes your skin looks nice and healthy.

All that said, an spf moisturizer doesn’t feel as moisturizing as just a plain moisturizer.  At least that’s what my skin feels.  So I like a moisturizing mist before I use this.

This Rose all Day moisturizer smells like roses.  And that’s one of the best thing about it because it kept me coming back for more.

$15.39 at the drugstore.

Sunscreen Sticks from Beautycounter and Aveeno Baby

How do you guys feel about stick sunscreens? Have you tried them? Did you like or nah?

I’m actually impressed with the Beautycounter mineral sunscreen stick. It’s clear even though the sunscreen protection is zinc oxide and the formula just glides on.

The Aveeno Baby sunscreen stick also uses zinc oxide but leaves a bit of a white cast. Not the worst thing when you’re trying to determine if your kid is adequately covered with sunscreen.

$27 for the Beautycounter sunscreen, and $13.37 for the Aveeno Baby sunscreen.
