Bobbi Brown BB Cream

If you’re looking for makeup that looks like skin, look no further than @bobbibrown.

Sometimes, nothing’s as good as a BB cream – skincare, coverage, and SPF all in one package, it’s just something that’s going to make your mornings easier.  These days I’m loving Bobbi Brown BB Cream SPF 35 ($62).

Y’all know I’m a Bobbi Brown fan, and I might be a little biased, but this was actually my favourite BB cream.

This BB Cream has a true BB cream feel – in that it’s heavier than most and gives you a very clean pore-less look. This lasted the longest on my skin, and was the only one that felt like real “makeup” to me – I would venture to say that it went head to head with my regular foundation. The only negative thing I have to say about this BB cream is that it was also the heaviest feeling – and maybe that’s because it has the highest SPF and the most coverage.

I still enjoy wearing it, and I’m still going to continue wearing it.

Available at the Bobbi Brown counter or online.

What are BB Creams

The latest makeup product trend to sweep North America is the BB Cream.  BB stands for Blemish Balm, and is meant to be treatment and coverage in one product.  The BB Cream was developed by German doctors who wanted to create something gentle for the patients who had had laser resurfacing or other procedures.  They wanted gentle hydration and treatment but their patients also wanted coverage.  The original BB creams used minerals to cover minor skin imperfections, and they also had titanium dioxide for sun protection.  Thus, the final texture of the cream was slightly powdery with medium to light coverage. Because of the titanium dioxide, the creams had a whitish cast.

Because of the porcelain-like finish that the whitish cast gave to the skin, the BB creams became very popular in Asia where having lighter, fairer, and totally clear skin was sought after.  The BB creams gave that finish and so became very popular.

And now: they’ve made their way to North America.

Really, a BB cream is quite similar to a tinted moisturizer or a treatment foundation.  There isn’t a cream on the market that really has a lot of skin-soothing ingredients in it, or even any that can prevent blemishes.  Most of the creams offer hydration and some coverage, some even throw in sun protection into the mix, albeit at a minor SPF.

Despite having been sent some BB creams to try out, for the most part I am still using my usual treatment products on my skin, and also using my own sunscreen under the creams.  I like a porcelain-like look too, and using sun protection means that I can preserve that look.

Honestly, the verdict is out on BB Creams.  I haven’t found one that can do it all, and I use them just like I would regular foundation.  They come in such a small range of shades, that if you can find one that suits your skin colour then you’re one of the lucky few that can use it.  Otherwise, continue mixing your foundation with some moisturizer to make your own BB cream at home!

Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Eye Cream

When people find out how many products I try, they always ask for what my favourite eye cream is. Inevitably, they’ve got some dryness under their eyes, or some shadows, or a few new wrinkles that they’ve noticed and they want a magic recipe to get rid of them. Truth be told, it’s hard to find a good eye cream. Very few of them actually do what they say, and truly, the best way to get rid of under-eye circles is to get more sleep, drink more water, and eat better, but those things are more difficult to do and the results seem out of reach. The next best thing is to use concealer. It’s also not meant for those who don’t want to spend a lot of time in front of the mirror.

But now, there’s an eye cream that I really like. I won’t promise that it gets rid of anything, but it does moisturize the skin under your eyes without being greasy and makeup goes on overtop without sliding around or creasing.

It’s the Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Eye Cream. It has a delicious and refreshing cucumber scent, and it goes on just like water but then absorbs in a second and leaves your skin looking great. It works well on all skin types, and hydrates without any dewiness. Water and glycerine are the main ingredients and they do a good job at drawing water into the skin and keeping it there.

$59 at Sephora.

bareMinerals Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream

Always on the lookout for something that has SPF in it, this week I’m using the bareMinerals Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream.  It has SPF 30 broad spectrum sunscreen in it which is great for people who want a hydrating tinted moisturizer that also has sunscreen in it.  Using a tinted sunscreen product is a life-saver for me, so adding this to my morning routine is a no-brainer.  It has light-medium coverage and a definite glowy finish.

I got the colour Desert 6.5, and it was too dark for me – next time I’m going back for Ginger or Bamboo.  Desert is a good vacation or summer colour for me, while Ginger and Bamboo would work all year long.

I love how this felt on my skin – fresh and hydrating – and I loved the coverage that this gave me, but I wasn’t a fan of the glowy finish of this tinted moisturizer.  It’s a little too obvious – so much so that my kids asked my why my skin was so shiny today.  If you need some glow – maybe your skin looks dry without it – then this would be for you.  If you have oily skin, you probably don’t want it to look any oilier, so this might not be for you.

I liked that it was fairly pigmented, so I applied it with a foundation brush instead of with my fingers.  I find that it gives you more even coverage, and enough coverage that you are getting good sun protection.  With my fingers, I just tend to smooth everything away.

This is available at Sephora. $39.

Differin Empty Video

Differin is Adapalene which is a basic basic form of retinol that is available by prescription through your doctor.  I finished a tube I got last December, so it took me over a year to finish this tube.  I mean, I took breaks from it and used it on and off, but I tried to stick to it as much as possible. I’m using the 0.1% formula and I’m sticking to it because it’s gentle.  I could have moved up to a 0.3% but I honestly didn’t think about it when I was getting the prescription.  The gel comes in a cream formula too which I would like to try, because this stuff dries your skin out!

This cream works well for persistent acne, and for wrinkles.  Because it’s prescription, it’s pretty basic.  If you want something with antioxidants, peptides, or moisturizers in it, the you might be better off buying something stronger from Sephora, or from your dermatologist’s office.  But if you’re ok with using this and then applying your own moisturizer on top, then this is great.

If you’re using retinol, what do you use?

Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash Mascara Review

I got my hands on a tube of Smoky Lash Mascara by Make Up Forever.  If you’ve never run into this line, it’s because you haven’t checked out a Sephora properly.  Both Sephora and Make Up Forever are owned by the same parent company so their products are always in Sephora stores.

Stuck for what this line is about?  Think a high-end, French MAC-like line.  You can get funky colours here and foundations in almost any colour.  They make colours for all skintones and if you’ve had trouble matching your skin, then you have to check out Make Up Forever and see if you can find anything for yourself.

Anyway, they’ve come out with a mascara that everyone’s been talking about and so I decided to try it myself.  As you know, I really like wearing Cover Girl mascaras and find it hard to find anything that does what that mascara can’t but the Smoky Lash mascara comes really close.  It’s a super-pigmented rich black mascara that lasts all day without creasing.  It can clump up if you over-apply and has a tendency to flake at the very end of the day, but your lashes feel feather-light and you can’t even feel that you’re wearing mascara!

There’s no fancy brush here, but there is a pretty great mascara!

$30 wherever Make Up For Ever products are sold.

A Great Waterproof Eye Pencil

Some women like liquid liner for a nice clean look, and some like a rich black liner that’s smudgeable.  If you belong to the latter group, you should check out Benefit’s BADgal Liner.  You can smudge it if you move quickly but if you just apply it as is, you can get a clean line that lasts the whole day.

Unlike most waterproof liners, the colour of it is a nice rich black that stays black for the whole day!  Also available in brown, blue, and purple, but I’m loving the nice rich black.

This is available everywhere Benefit products are sold, including Sephora and Shoppers Drug Mart.

$27.

Instagram Worthy

Do you guys want to follow me on Instagram?  My name on there is CanadianBeautydotcom and I thought it would be personal for a while, and then just for sharing pictures of my weekends, but more and more I’ve been putting my favourite beauty finds on there and I love it.

Here are some things that I’ve loved recently.

Beautycounter’s Brightening and Vitamin C Oil.  I actually turned to this when I was going through a time when I had super dry skin, and this helped keep it hydrated and made it look brighter.  It’s awesome.

Oils these days don’t make your skin greasy.  Most of the time they absorb quickly and have ingredients like vitamin C, or even retinol, to help improve skin while making it feel better.

I’m a huge fan of Avene’s High Protection Mineral Sunscreens.  They come in a formula for the face and one for the body.   These sunscreens are actually mineral sunscreens but they go on completely clear!  Even on more tan skin! I love them.

Also, Neostrata sent me their Acne Clear system, with their new Acne Clear lotion that they added to the line.  All the products have 2% Salicylic Acid in them to help keep pores clear, but the toner also has 8% Glycolic Acid in it, which really helps exfoliate the skin.

Also: my favourite scrub by LoveFresh.  This smells like lattes, and the ingredients include Shea Butter, Coconut Butter, and coffee grounds, with sugar.  I love this because it doesn’t get gunky on your skin and just leaves it so smooth.

Finally, I tried some natural bug spray from Rocky Mountain Soap Company and I think it worked well.  Smelled kind of like a citronella candle.

Are any of these familiar to you guys?  I would love to hear from you!
