Clear Your Skin with HQ Creams

This spring, I want to take an added interest in renewal.  WE all want better skin, whiter teeth, and a healthier body but what are we actually doing to get any of those things?

When it comes to brighter skin, there’s no secret to getting it.  By now you should have already started using Glycolic acid and vitamin C on your skin on a regular basis to keep your skin without any scars.  There are tons of products out there and a range of ingredients that actually work.  Even rosemary oil, and niacinamide can all help fade spots and Olay’s Definity line of products has had proven results.

But I prefer to use something a little more intense.  I like using HQ creams because the results are a little more immediate especially when sued in conjunction with an effective glycolic peel.  They can fade sunspots, acne scars, age spots, and even liver spots.  You can notice an effect in a matter of weeks and it’s up to you to keep using the cream until you’re happy with your complexion.

Here in Canada, HQ creams are only available over-the-counter, and in some provinces you are required to give your information before purchasing the cream.  Neostrata makes a cream and there’s a non-commercial version of it as well.  But I like using Dr. Obagi’s Sunfader cream which is the same thing and not available at the drugstore.  You can only get this cream at a dermatologist or laser rejuvenation center and though it costs more, it’s worth every penny.

Unlike the Neostrata HQ cream, the Obagi one doesn’t smell and has no odor of any kind.  Though both have SPF in them, the Obagi cream has a more matte feel and doesn’t leave your skin feeling and looking greasy and sticky.  You can layer makeup on top of both, but if you use the drugstore creams, your makeup will slip and slide around while it stays put on the Obagi Sunfader cream.

Clive Christian Perfumes – and the Most Expensive Perfume in the World

Clive Christian’s No. 1 perfume is the most expensive perfume in the world. The Guinness Book of World Records Says so.

You can get your hands on it at either Neiman Marcus or at Holt Renfrew, where the perfume spray retails for $300 an ounce.

How does it smell? Nice.

The ladies’ version doesn’t veer in one direction or another. It’s not gourmand or overly adventurous in any way, but it does smells fresh and floral. Is it worth $300? If you like how it smells, then definitely. Regardless of the cost, it would make a lovely holiday gift for any fragrance lover and the bottle would make a pretty addition to anyone’s vanity table.

There are also a men’s version available, and 2 other Clive Christian perfumes, 1872 and X, which is mine (and Goldie Hawn’s) favourite.

Empty: The Inkey List Squalane Oil Video

Guys, good skincare doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and if you haven’t checked your local Shoppers Drug Mart for The Inkey List, then head there now.  The Inkey list is a line of skincare products that focus on one ingredient at a time, so you can really find what works for your skin, and cocktail products to take care of your own specific skincare concerns.

I’ve done an overview video, and reviewed a few of their products.

Now I’m into the Inkey List Squalane oil which I had to pull out to combat the dry and cold weather we’ve been having.  If you haven’t put oil on your face, you need to try it, even if you already have oily skin.  Oil just seals everything in, especially hydration, and can combat the drying effects of certain active ingredients.  Squalane oil is one of the thinnest oils out there, and it’s plant-derived, so it works really well for oily skin.  I use it right out of the shower sometimes and that will be the only skincare I’m putting on my face at that time.

The best part of The Inkey List products is that they are all affordable.  This oil is $14.99 in a decently-sized bottle.  Use a bit everyday and the bottle will last you a few months.  I tend to take it out, use it when my skin is ultra dry, and then put it away until I experience that dryness again.

Go Smile Teeth Whitening System

GoSmile Teeth Whitening System

I just finished using the Go Smile B1 Tooth Whitening System and I have to say that it is by far the most easy to use tooth whitening system available on the market.

The system comes as a set of 20 ampules, and you use 2 a day. You rub the solution on your teeth and then let it rest for 20 minutes while it does its thing. 10 days later: whiter teeth!

If you’re looking for a system that you can use easily and have had it with those strips, then just get this. I think you’ll like it. Available online.

The Hudson’s Bay Eye Masks

This is the most genius thing ever: a pack of 30 eye masks in a tub so you don’t have to keep opening up packets of masks.  Don’t worry, I’ve tried them for you and they work.  Filled with Caffeine, and Hyaluronic Acid, they’re brightening and hydrating all in one.

And they’re on cellulose which I think gives you just the most enjoyable mask experience.

Available at The Hudson’s Bay stores or online. $40.

Book Review: Barefoot Contessa Back to Basics

I love to cook and I find that it’s handy to have cook books around because they can be so inspiring. My latest favourite is the Barefoot Contessa’s Back to Basics Cookbook. It’s so good that everyone that came across it really wanted to keep it for themselves and so it’s being passed around as people find their own favourite recipies.

Maybelline Fit Me! Matte + Poreless Foundation Video

I’ve used this foundation before and I loved it so much that I finished it! It’s one of the few foundations that I’ve ever finished, so it’s a good one.  It also comes in lots of natural-looking colours (I think I used Sun Beige below) so it’s easy to find one that looks natural.

Here it is in action.

MAC Cosmetics Complete Comfort Cream

It’s -7 degrees Celsius here today and these days I’m reaching for the MAC Complete Comfort Cream.  The name sucked me and I thought it would be super hydrating.  Truth be told, this is an okay formula that’s not that moisturizing.

If you have super dry and flaky skin, then this isn’t going to do much for you. But it’s maybe the best moisturizer I’ve ever used under makeup which is fitting because it comes from a makeup brand.  The cream has a soft powdery finish once it absorbs, and that happens pretty quickly.   Probably by the time you reach for your sunscreen or foundation, this will have absorbed and will layer amazingly well with makeup.  It kept my skin hydrated for the day and almost worked as a primer.  But again, if you have really dry skin, you might need something heavier or more oily.

This moisturizer would be great for oily or combination skin but if you’re dry, this probably won’t give you all the comfort that you need.

$42.

Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask, and Drybar Liquid Glass Smoothing Shampoo

Two products I bought during a Sephora sale: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Drybar Liquid Glass Smoothing Shampoo: honestly, I bought this for the scent but it’s not that strongly scented and it’s a pretty basic shampoo. Underwhelming and would not buy again – but their styling products are ones I’ll rebuy!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask: I LOVE THIS but it’s not what I thought it was when I first bought it. I think it would be an Olaplex-type treatment? But it’s not at all and is more of a hydrating shine conditioner, and I would rebuy this even in a larger size!  Amika is definitely a brand I’m into right now, has anyone else tried their products?  You can get this for $33 here.

Charlotte Tilbury + Norman Parkinson Filmstar Bronze and Glow

I’m sad to say that at $80 this was a splurge for me, and although I liked using it, I haven’t used it as much of my drugstore highlight and contour products.  Love luxury makeup but sometimes… it just doesn’t get that much use!  Read on for the review.

Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze and Glow CreamOne of my splurges  has been Charlotte Tilbury’s cream version of her very popular Filmstar Bronze and Glow.  It’s her contour duo that helps shape the face and highlight the high points.

Charlotte Tilbury is a celebrity and editorial makeup artist who helped put together the Tom Ford line of makeup.  Last year she came out with her own line, and it seems to be a well put together edit of products that promise to make you beautiful without spending too much time in front of the mirror.  I love that she promises that everything will be easy, and her smudgy sexy rock and roll aesthetic appeals to the mom in me who loves a smoky eye but without lots of time to execute it.  I’ve been wanting to try her contour duo because contouring has become a part of my routine, if only for the weekends.

Of course, I researched the heck out of this before I bought it, and I have to tell you that not all the reviews were good.  Many people said that it was too greasy or too emollient and that it wasn’t as good as the powder.  I could see that the texture was different, but I wanted a cream contour, and what really sold me was the shade of the contour colour.  It just seemed like such a perfect natural shadow colour – a perfect mix of grey and brown, but mostly brown – that I knew it would work for me.

Filmstar Bronze and Glow Norman ParkinsonThe cream Filmstar Bronze and Glow only comes in one colour, but the highlight is gold, so I knew it would be perfect for my yellow-based medium-toned skin.

Truth is that yes, this is a very emollient product – especially the contour colour – but that makes it very easy to use.  I pat it on with my fingertips and then blend it out.  Sometimes I powder my face, and sometimes I don’t and the wear of the product completely depends on it.  The highlighter is a little more powdery and on the glittery side.  It’s not a product that looks at all natural, but it’s great for a night out – it’s definitely not something I’m wearing for preschool drop off!

For $80, I do wish that the products were more long-lasting and that the highlighter was smoother, but I’ve had this for the past month and it’s staying in my makeup kit, so that means that I kind of love it.

I’m not that into the Norman Parkinson packaging and would have liked something more chic, and I don’t think that this is going to be a permanent product, so if you’re into a cream contour duo, pick this up while you can. I am intrigued to try other products from the brand and will be picking them up as I find them!
