Charlotte Tilbury + Norman Parkinson Filmstar Bronze and Glow

I’m sad to say that at $80 this was a splurge for me, and although I liked using it, I haven’t used it as much of my drugstore highlight and contour products.  Love luxury makeup but sometimes… it just doesn’t get that much use!  Read on for the review.

Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze and Glow CreamOne of my splurges  has been Charlotte Tilbury’s cream version of her very popular Filmstar Bronze and Glow.  It’s her contour duo that helps shape the face and highlight the high points.

Charlotte Tilbury is a celebrity and editorial makeup artist who helped put together the Tom Ford line of makeup.  Last year she came out with her own line, and it seems to be a well put together edit of products that promise to make you beautiful without spending too much time in front of the mirror.  I love that she promises that everything will be easy, and her smudgy sexy rock and roll aesthetic appeals to the mom in me who loves a smoky eye but without lots of time to execute it.  I’ve been wanting to try her contour duo because contouring has become a part of my routine, if only for the weekends.

Of course, I researched the heck out of this before I bought it, and I have to tell you that not all the reviews were good.  Many people said that it was too greasy or too emollient and that it wasn’t as good as the powder.  I could see that the texture was different, but I wanted a cream contour, and what really sold me was the shade of the contour colour.  It just seemed like such a perfect natural shadow colour – a perfect mix of grey and brown, but mostly brown – that I knew it would work for me.

Filmstar Bronze and Glow Norman ParkinsonThe cream Filmstar Bronze and Glow only comes in one colour, but the highlight is gold, so I knew it would be perfect for my yellow-based medium-toned skin.

Truth is that yes, this is a very emollient product – especially the contour colour – but that makes it very easy to use.  I pat it on with my fingertips and then blend it out.  Sometimes I powder my face, and sometimes I don’t and the wear of the product completely depends on it.  The highlighter is a little more powdery and on the glittery side.  It’s not a product that looks at all natural, but it’s great for a night out – it’s definitely not something I’m wearing for preschool drop off!

For $80, I do wish that the products were more long-lasting and that the highlighter was smoother, but I’ve had this for the past month and it’s staying in my makeup kit, so that means that I kind of love it.

I’m not that into the Norman Parkinson packaging and would have liked something more chic, and I don’t think that this is going to be a permanent product, so if you’re into a cream contour duo, pick this up while you can. I am intrigued to try other products from the brand and will be picking them up as I find them!

Omorovicza Thermal Cleansing Balm

This is the first and only Omorovicza product that I have tried and it’s great for dry skin. The cleansing balm has sweet almond oil as the second ingredient so it’s really moisturizing and also really oily so you will find that it doesn’t emulsify the way that other cleansing balms and oils do. This is one cleanser that you really do have to remove from your face with a damp cloth.

You can see that there’s some mud in the balm so it’s not completely clear like other cleansing balms. It’s also going to leave a residue on your skin which may not be for you, so I suggest double-cleansing when you use this. You’ll find that it then gives you a better, more thorough clean.

Available at Sephora and Nordstrom. $42.

Empty: Cerave Hydrating Micellar Water

I like to keep micellar water on hand to help me take off makeup when I’m in a hurry.  Instead of using it on cotton pads, I actually pour it on to a cleansing cloth and it gets off any long-wear lipstick, eyeliner or mascara that might be on my face.

This says that it’s a no-rinse formula and you really don’t have to rinse it if you want your skin to be hydrated.  I kept reaching for this Cerave Micellar water and now it’s done.

Have you finished anything recently?

The Perfect Scent by Chandler Burr

I just finished reading The Perfect Scent by Chandler Burr, and oh my goodness, it is the best book! I learned so much about the perfume industry.

The Perfect Scent

Chandler Burr is the scent critic for the New York Time’s Style Magazine, T, and the book does include some of his columns weaved into the storyline, but really it’s a chance for Burr to share everything he’s learned about the perfume industry in the time that he’s been writing the column.

He goes backstage to the making of Sarah Jessica Parker’s scent, Lovely, and shows us how involved she was in the project from start to finish, and he also takes us to Hermes where they’ve just hired an in-house perfumer to make their scents and keep the Hermes stamp present in each and every one.

Burr is a fantastic story-teller and a great writer. You learn so much without drowning in all the chemical and fragrance names.

The book has given me a new appreciation for perfumes and I am going to get my hands on his other books.

Estee Lauder Compacts

Every year, Estee Lauder releases a set of collectible compacts. No compact is like any other and once they sell out of it, they won’t be releasing the same one again. These compacts are jeweled with Austrian crystals, and are either filled with a solid perfume or a pressed powder (of which one can also purchase refills).

The compacts are always beautiful to be sure, but I had no idea that people collect them with such passion. I met a woman who has almost every compact ever released and has set them up in a very authentic-looking Estee Lauder display case in her home, complete with glass shelves, and museum-style lighting. Another woman keeps them locked up in a cupboard and only shows them to those friends that appreciate fine workmanship.

Below: pictures of some of the compacts. I am enchanted by the gilded cage.

OPI Nutcracker Collection

OPI Nutcracker is from last January, but you can still find these colours.

My favourite colour out of this whole collection has to be Lavendare to Find Courage.  It’s a pretty lavender-pink that feels very trendy and will be taking me through the whole year.  Yes, you’ll be seeing me wear this in tons of product pictures. It is super dark around here, so I took a picture in my car on the way home from work.

Also a favourite: March in Uniform.

It’s the perfect winter blue that’s not too dark.  It feels very wintery to me.

All of the above are also favourites.  The light blue is Dreams Need Clara-fication, the dark blue is still March in Uniform, the gold is Dazzling Dew Drop, the silver is Tinker, Thinker Winker, which is actually a holographic silver which I will show you later, and the whitish is Dancing Keeps me On My Toes.

Oh, and before I forget, there are some glitter shades too!  I love to wear them but I hate to take them off.  The silver is Dreams on a Silver Platter, the gold is Gold Key to the Kingdom, and the rose gold is I Pull the Strings.

Here’s I Pull the Strings on a bare nail. I put 2 coats because I wanted a lot of glitter.  It looks pretty and it lasted a very long time.

You can still find the entire collection in salons now.

Tom Ford Traceless Perfecting Foundation SPF 15 Review

I love foundations that have SPF in them – I’ve found that if you apply enough, you get decent coverage and protection against the sun. The Tom Ford Traceless Foundation is a medium-full coverage foundation that really goes on nicely and covers well. I found that it kind of looked a bit much when I started to apply it, but with foundations that have lots of coverage, I find that if I stick to applying it to the center of my face and work my way out, I can get a more natural finish.

This foundation really sticks to your skin and it lasted all night on my oily skin. I liked that it ended up looking natural in the end, and I really like the airless pump because you know that you’re going to get every last drop of foundation out of the bottle and it’s not going to oxidize.

Ultimately, this isn’t a foundation that I reach for, because I like the sheer or light coverage foundation.

$117 at Tom Ford counters.

Ojon Tawaka Ball

Sometimes I like to look at beauty products that were launched a long time ago and reminisce. Ojon was a brand that came out in the 2000’s and focused on an oil found in the Amazon. They had hair products that were moisturizing and so nice for your hair, but now they are no longer! The brand got bought out by Estee Lauder, and then went into oblivion. But they came out with this cool exfoliator that I really enjoyed.

I think it’s pretty clear that I have an intense love of exfoliators. I use them year-round and simply adore them because they really help your skin look its best. The greatest thing is that they’re usually exfoliating which means that you save a step when it comes to getting ready. My latest love is Ojon’s Tawaka “The Ball” which smells and indeed looks like a ball of delicious chocolate.

Hold the ball under warm running water and the chocolaty-substance starts to melt and you can rub it all over your body. Under the smooth exterior lies lots of little scrubby bits that remind me of coffee grounds and they have the perfect amount of exfoliating power. The exfoliating doesn’t hurt and it doesn’t leave a residue. Plus, the circular motion of rubbing is said to increase circulation and the substance has antioxidant properties with is just a bonus.

Does anyone else remember Ojon?
