Cerave Hydrating Cleanser

Still on the bandwagon for this @CeraVeCanada cleanser, and it’s working for the whole family!  This cleanser is the first step in my night time cleansing routine. I put it on dry skin and then wipe it off with a wet washcloth.

The best cleansers are gentle enough for sensitive skin and take off all your makeup – and guess what, Cerave Hydrating Cleanser falls into that category.  You’ve probably heard all about Cerave – it’s highly recommended by dermatologists, and when I posted about it on Instagram, so many people commented or messaged me saying that it was the one that they used and it really worked for their skin.

This is a super basic cleanser.  It doesn’t foam and it doesn’t offer anything fancy to leave on your skin.  And that’s just fine with me, because cleanser is something that you’re just washing off – literally, it’s going down the drain, so you don’t need it to be fancy.

The Hydrating Cleanser is a gel consistency that’s creamy.  It has slip in it and enough moisturizers that it melts makeup – mascara and eyeliner are gone in seconds, as is long-wearing lipstick.  If it gets in your eye, it won’t sting or hurt, and after all is said and done, it washes off without stripping your skin.  That’s why people love it.  It’s more of a light lotion then a traditional cleanser, and it’s formulated with ceramides which help nourish but also melt everything off.

I like to wipe it off with a wet cloth, and then sometimes follow up with a foaming cleanser.

One of the best things about Cerave is that it’s available at drugstores.  $14 at drugstores.

From the Archives: MAC Beauty Powder Blush – Pictures!

mac blushes
MAC launched a new set of blushes recently – significant because they already have a large range of blushes. How are these different? Well, the shimmer in the new Beauty Powder Blushes isn’t as fine as the shimmer in some of MAC’s other blushes. I find that it’s more noticeable and really gives a nice sheen to the cheek. The shimmer is comparable to that in Nars blushes, so if you’ve used those, you know what I’m talking about.

Here are pictures of three of the colours.

Shy Beautymac blush
Eversun

Shy Beauty is a lovely peach with gold shimmer. It would be nice for everyday and is hard to mess up. Eversun is a bronze colour that once could use as a light bronzer year round.

As always there are a ton of colours to choose from so you can indeed find one that works with your complexion. Blushes retail for $17.50 U.S./$22.00 CDN.

Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Collection

This dry winter weather is the best time to see if these moisturizers work. Fresh’s Lotus Youth Preserve moisturizers have Lotus extract as their antioxidant, along with glycerine and other moisturizers that help hydrate skin.  The day and night moisturizers ($63 each) have been around since before, but the eye cream ($59) is new.

My favourite is the basic day moisturizer.  It’s got a bit of glow in it so that it leaves your skin looking fresh and bright, even though you might be putting makeup on top of it.

The Dream Face Cream is amazing too – it’s thicker than the day moisturizer and without the tiny bit of shimmer.  It seems to last on your skin a long time and I always woke up with hydrated skin.

The night cream is the thickest of the bunch – and it’s $59 for a smaller jar.  It is perfect if you have very dry skin and need something gentle under your eyes.

The entire Lotus line is available at Sephora.

Maybelline Dream Urban Cover Review Video

Here’s what you need to know before you watch this video – this @Maybelline Dream Urban Cover is said to be like the It Cosmetics CC creams. I’ve tried the It Cosmetics CC creams, and I think this is better!

The colours I have 128 Warm Nude and 215 Almond.  One is a little light and one is a tad dark, so I’m mixing them together – watch the video to see how I do this.  Because the foundation is so pigmented I like to apply it with a brush because I don’t want my fingers covered with it at the end of the day.

Check out the video – have you tried this? Tell me what you think!

Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Fragrance

Just an update for you, in case you were thinking of getting this: it’s marked down to $20 at Sephora.

Currently wearing this @bumbleandbumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Fragrance for hair and body. I spray it directly into my hair and it’s working well.

Normally, I wouldn’t spray a perfume directly into my hair, but because this is formulated with some dimethicone, it adds a bit of shine and conditioning to your hair instead of being just water and alcohol like most perfume. If you spray regular perfume into your hair, it might be drying and it might not really stick to your hair and give it the scent that you want. With a perfume specifically made to be used on your hair, it’s formulated to better stick to your hair. Regular perfume works with your skin, the oils on it, and your body temperature, but this doesn’t need any of that. I mean, I don’t spray it close to my scalp, and it’s great.

Notes! The notes are coconut and vanilla and tiare flower. It’s a beachy one and that makes it perfect for this time of year. Like most perfumes, this smells a little strong when you first spritz it on, but then the scent fades as you wear it, and it’s not very strong when I walk out the door in the morning. This would be a great alternative to dry shampoo, if you just used that for the scent.

It’s limited edition and available at salons that carry Bumble and Bumble, or Sephora. $38.

Kerastase’s More Natural Line

Aura Botanica is Kerastase’s answer to the natural world of shampoo and conditioner.  They’re known for being a brand that’s really adamant that their product retains its efficacy no matter what, and that it consistently smells a certain way so that their consumers are immersed into using their products with all their senses.  When they decided that they wanted to make a line of products that was more natural – over 90% natural – they knew that they wanted them to smell good so they’d have the same Kerastase experience as all the other products, but also that they’d make your hair look and feel better.

Aura Botanica is unlike anything else from Kerastase.  The products are beautiful and work well together, providing you with healthier hair.  If you’re into using products that are more natural, here’s a salon brand that delivers.

The line consists of a shampoo ($45), conditioner ($50), oil ($60), and mist ($57).  The products are 96% natural.  They’re silicone and sulfate free, and are only 96% natural, because the unnatural elements keep the fragrance and formula stable.

The shampoo is clear but very moisturizing.  You could almost use it without any conditioner because that’s how gentle it is to hair.  It’s definitely not great as a clarifying shampoo because it does add some moisture back into your hair, but if you have a lot of build up then you could shampoo twice, and that would do it for you.  The conditioner is thick, rich, and super creamy.  A tiny amount is enough for my long hair and I love that it emulsifies with water, but also sticks to my hair letting it soak in all the argan oil that it contains.  To really nourish your hair, you could add a few drops of the oil into your hair and that would make for an even more emollient conditioner. This does wash out clean, but it leaves my hair so nourished that I actually don’t need any hair serum in it afterwards, cutting out the need to put more silicone in my hair.  It doesn’t weigh my hair down but leaves it soft and un-frizzy, which I really appreciate.

The hair oil is meant to be used as a pre-conditioner or with the wash-out conditioner.  It is light-weight but does add noticeable grease into your hair, which is why it’s a pre-treatment and best to wash out.  It does work to really nourish hair and keep the ends healthy and because it’s an oil, you can also use it on your body or face.

The Hair Mist is a bi-phase oil, and is also silicone-free so it’s best to use a little rather than a lot.  Two mists are enough for my long hair and it’s better to start with a little and then add more as you style your hair.

Finally, you don’t have to shop at the natural food store if you want hair products that are more natural – Aura Botanica is available at salons.

Shan Rahimkhan True Volume Intensive Repair Treatment

My sister picked up this mask when she was in Berlin last year, and I brought it along on vacation with me. I really loved the pump bottle of this mask because it made it easy to get lot of product out even when my hands were dirty.

What this bottle dispenses is a lovely cream that turns into a watery-oil formulation when you rub it in your hands. Because it’s a bit of a watery conditioner, it’s super easy to spread throughout your hair even when your hair is dry. It also smells really good.

This conditioned my hair nicely and it wasn’t greasy like the Amika conditioner or crunchy like the Ouai conditioner. I loved using it and would use it again. I’m not sure why it has True Volume in its name, but I didn’t notice any volumizing when I used this treatment.

Not sure where you can get it stateside but maybe the line will show up one day!

Estee Lauder Sumptuous Mascara Review

The tagline for this Estee Lauder mascara says “Bold Volume Lifting Mascara” and the accompanying copy tells me that it builds volume without weighing down lashes or becoming overly sticky or tacky.

I have to say that all that is absolutely true. This is a mascara that’s a pleasure to wear and use on a daily basis. The more coats you put on the better it looks, and the best part is that it doesn’t smudge or flake as the day wears on!

I love getting dramatic lashes with this and at the end of the day, it washes off easily and cleanly.

$35 at Estee Lauder counters.

The Body Shop Banana Truly Nourishing Shampoo

I really don’t like anything that smells or tastes like bananas. I think the reason is that I used to have banana-flavoured medicine when I was younger and so that made me dislike the taste forever.

But I really like products from The Body Shop and so I did want to try their Banana Shampoo because it used to be a best-seller.

This shampoo has given me the softest hair!

I think the way that it works is that it’s clarifying but it doesn’t strip your hair of all moisture so your hair is soft without really being overly dry.

Pick it up at the Body Shop for $11, but on sale right now for $7.70.
