Vivier Skin – Impressive Mineral Sunscreen and New Enzymatic Peel

What’s impressive is that Vivier Skin has not one but two sunscreens that are mineral and clear. I was going to write that they’re sheer but that’s not even accurate – there’s no grey tint or white cast to them, and the tinted version has a glow instead of being orange. It should be surprising but given the lack of great mineral sunscreens on the market, it’s refreshing to find something impressive.

Anyway – the newest launch from is the Enzymatic Peel, a product that’s meant to give an instant glow. It’s for people who find a traditional acid product too harsh or drying. If you’re new to skincare or haven’t used acids ever (a glycolic or a lactic acid) then maybe the enzymatic peel is for you. Combining low levels of glycolic and lactic acids with a vitamin c, the promise is brighter skin with regular but careful use. You can use this one a couple of times a week and stick to more gentle skincare the rest of the time.

I mean, I’ve been using harsh acid toners on my face since I was a teenager, so I like to think that my skin is like leather and can take anything, but the truth is that it’s often sensitive because of retinoid use. I might trade out my acid toner for this more moisturizing formula and see how my skin likes it.

Anyway, not a full review because I’ve not spent enough time with the product yet, but yes, I’ve got the Vivier treatment plan with a nice strong retinol, some products for pigmentation, and this new peel. I’ll report back.

Shalimar Millisime Iris Review

October 17
They took Prada Candy and put it into a Shalimar bottle, stuck the Millesime sticker on it, and did a limited edition run. Oh, and called it Millesime Iris because everyone (including me) is into Iris right now. The Iris is there, really close to the skin, but the caramel definitely overtakes the composition. The good news is that if you don’t like Shalimar, you might like this. The bad news is that if you get this expecting a new version of Shalimar, it’s not really that. But it sold out before it even launched so Guerlain is laughing all the way to the bank.

If you’ve smelled this, what did you think of it?

Zara Vapeur Blanche Perfume Review

October 16
It’s been a few days of fog and mist, really perfectly mirroring the meditative mood of Vapeur Blanche from Zara. Olivia Giacobetti is the perfumer behind 4 perfumes for the brand, and the zen blend of eucalyptus, cucumber and steamy musk called out to me.

Have you smelled any of these?

Sisley Eau de Sisley 2

September 18
I almost didn’t feel like myself putting on this 80’s style chypre. It’s been a while since I’ve worn Sisley Eau de 2 because I’ve been leaning into my cozier perfumes more, and really wearing my samples a lot. This is pointy, sharp, mossy, and with an unseasonably warm fall day, it was now or never. Of course, a few hours in, this lost its crisp edges and becomes woodier, friendlier, like a villain on Dallas who wears shoulder pads to hide a soft heart, who became understandable once you heard the back story. A perfume from different times.

Serge Lutens Borneo 1834 Perfume Review

September 18
The road is not straight, it’s twisty, turny, and sometimes there are cliffs, except they only feel like cliffs, so you squeeze your eyes shut and hope to not feel anything, but then you land on your feet and can open your eyes to see that it wasn’t a cliff, just a break in the path.

And throughout it all, I’ve enjoyed being your friend and basking in the sunshine that is your friendship.

Through it all I’ve learned so much.

I’ve learned to agree to disagree, and that even when we do disagree, we are not enemies. I’ve learned that empty vessels make the loudest noise, and that luck favors the fools – which makes me wonder whether I’m the most foolish or the least.

But as I think of all that, for right now there’s Borneo 1834.

I’ve read that someone thought that Christopher Sheldrake had taken Borneo 1834 and extended it into Coromandel and personally, I don’t really get that. The Borneo 1834 sample I had immediately evoked India for me, Bali for others, but this is a case of the sample smelling different from this Gratte-ciel bottle. The sample may have been for a Palais Royal bottle and the scent was dryer, woodier, with less cocoa powder. Nonetheless, Coromandel has the same dark patchouli but it’s heavier, sweeter and more complex, while Borneo 1834 is a darker, simpler, and has a dry green cardamom that pushes this to face gourmand territory without quite getting there. Right now, it’s my favourite Serge Lutens scent and it’s got a coziness that really works well in crisp days. This is a feeling of warmth when you walk into your favourite pastry shop and you know that you’re in for a treat but you’re not sure what it will be. It’s anticipation and reward in one, and strikes a balance that’s comforting.

Skin Proud Skincare

September 18
A beauty trend right now is skincare marketed to younger teens – forget about Noxema, we are talking about skincare that’s non-stripping, mindful of the skin barrier, and feels comforting. It’s a theory I have, and here’s my proof:

Skin Proud’s Sleep Hero Sleep Mask smells like black currants, but the retinoid (which has a tiny amount of a mild retinoid, and a dusting of bakuchiol) smells like cotton candy. The retinoid is in a moisturizing serum, instead of the chalky base of more intense and major retinoids we geriatric millennials are using. Honestly, I love using both of these because the textures are so bouncy and comfortable on my skin. The benefit is that this line is at Walmart and more affordable. I’ve talked about the Sephora and Starbucks kids, and this is a line for when they’d rather save their money for Starbucks.

I’m not a derm, but probably a retinoid is something you want to use if your doctor suggests it.

For fairly straight-foward skincare, there’s always Cerave. The pm Facial Moisturizing Lotion is as basic as it gets and also doesn’t break the bank. I’ve gone through countless tubes of the sunscreen. and it might not be as trendy as other options but, again, it’s affordable so anyone can use tons of it.

All this to say that I’m slightly envious of today’s kids with their options. I remember being a teen with acne and going to my family doctor who told me to just use Ivory Soap. So I used it as often as I could and ended up with cracked and dry – but still greasy – skin. Those days are long gone.

New Makeup From Trinny London and Fenty Beauty

Honestly, misting setting spray before I even get started with makeup (after sunscreen) is a game-changer and it helps everything last so much longer.

Trinny London has a new foundation – BFF Stay all Day – and it actually does last, but it’s very creamy and my skin is oily, so a setting spray helps it last just a bit longer. My colour is Sara – a golden toned shade that melts into skin. The finish is a modern “luminous matte” which disguises but gives a bit of luminosity that real skin actually has. Coverage is medium – I use a concealer just under my eyes.

Fenty Beauty has new shade sticks. I love that matte shades are skin-like and easy to find. The formula and finish is very similar to the eyeliners, so they’re creamy but they set to a long-wearing finish. They don’t last all day for me but they’re great for a few hours. If I wanted longer wear I would use an eyeshadow primer? B

ut I don’t think I can even be bothered most days.

Eyeshadow sticks are having a moment, even though they’ve been around for ever. Everyone remembers the Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown ones. Fenty actually offers the next generation of the formula, where the stick actually clicks shut keeping the product creamy and without drying out – that’s the kind of formula this is and I’m wear for it. It really does stick to skin and stay put longer than regular shadow on its own.

In the end, this cool weather means my makeup isn’t melting like it has been, and maybe this is one of the last days of leather jacket weather. Holiday is just around the corner.

Acid Toning

A lunch time discussion turned to Paula’s Choice BHA which is really one of the most iconic skincare products ever because even people who aren’t into skincare have heard of it, and will go to the trouble of ordering it online. People always ask me, do I use it too?

I don’t, but I have in the past. I sis use it when I couldn’t even order Paula’s Choice to Canada and whenever I went on vacation, I’d put in a Paula’s Choice order to my hotel room wherever I was going. After a while, I wanted something stronger, so I went to a formula that used BHA and AHA.

What makes a BHA product so good, is that BHA’s – salicylic acid – have the ability to cut through grease, so if you have oily skin, they help prevent breakouts and clogged pores by helping regular how oily your skin gets. You’ll find that your skin is just more clear when you use them because they’re working against the oil. When I was younger, and constantly worried about how greasy my skin would look, I found that using a BHA would keep my skin more matte longer and I realized it when I used them at night time and I would wake up with matte skin, which I loved.

These days, I use what’s easy to find, and I keep reaching for the Neutrogena glycolic products – the red one is part of the Stubborn Texture and the blue one is part of the hydrating line up of products. The red bottle has 7% glycolic acid and the other one is 10% – presumably, if you’re dealing with “stubborn texture” you are also a teen who may not have build up tolerance for glycolic acid. The 10% bottle feels like luxury skincare because of it’s glass so maybe it’s marketed to a different demographic, although I don’t know who has more disposable income these days – my friend calls them the “Sephora and Starbucks kids” because they seem to be darting between the two places and spend all their money there.

Refillable Skincare: Trinny London, Humanrace, Charlotte Tilbury

It’s the end of summer and I’m so sad to see it go. It was a good one, one for the books, the ages as they say. It just wasn’t long enough. I don’t want to hear that all good things come to an end. I want a refill, and I’ve got to admit that I like a capsule collection of anything and everything, fragrance, clothing, and if we include skincare then it has to be refillable because you’re using them for a while.

Here are some I’d refill:The Trinny London Bounce Back Peptide moisturizer or the Niacinamide moisturizer. They have a slick but rich formula and I keep returning to it. Humanrace body cream. Luscious like whipped cream and unscented like cement. Give me more.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream. Rich, thick and smelling roses. This is your mom’s cold cream but better and that’s why I love it. Maybe too old-school for everyone but not for me. I wish the Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen with shimmer was refillable but sunscreen might not ever be, especially not in a tube this big and I want the largest tube of this one. I got everyone on it this summer and I’ll be looking for it on sale because everyone knows that you need sunscreen all year.

Burberry Goddess Perfume Review

September 18
The coziest addition to the Burberry family, Burberry Goddess is a smooth vanilla, on a bed of fuzzy lavender, enclosed in a hot pink bubble of ambroxan, which (thankfully) pops a couple of hours after you spray it so that you get a shag-textured green vanilla. No, it’s not a completely unique and mind-blowing perfume, but if you’re a Burberry perfume fan, you will enjoy adding this to your collection, and if you like vanilla, you’ll like this too. The bottle is gorgeous, a heavy glass, the gold details are perfection. When the weather gets cooler, it’ll shine even stronger.
