Penhaligon’s of London… In New York

On my last day in New York the last time I was there, I had a chance to wander the streets at my leisure. After checking out Barney’s I walked up Madison Avenue just to see the sights, and lo and behold, I ended up finding the Penhaligon’s store! It was, without a doubt, the highlight of my weekend.

Buying perfume at a regular department store can be grossly overwhelming. There are so many choices, and too many people around waiting for you to make a decision. Sometimes, it seems that the worst thing that you can say is that you don’t like something after hearing about its royal origins or celebrity perfumer. Asking for a sample is almost out of the question.

That’s why Penhaligon’s has its loyal customers and stellar reputation. While I was in the store the phone was ringing off the hook with regular customers placing orders.

The woman who was managing the store asked me what scents I normally wore and allowed me to sample a few. Then she looked at me, adjusted her glasses, and said: “You look like a Violetta – lets try that on you.” It smelled amazing and was just what I was looking for.

I almost bought the bottle on the spot – and declared it was my favourite, but instead of pushing me to buy it, the woman at the Penhaligon’s store said: “I think I have a sample….” So then she handed me a few little vials, told me to try them, and then come back. She also reminded me that I could place my order over the phone and that they delivered.

Shopping at the Penhaligon’s store was a unique experience and one that I really enjoyed. Shopping at the store, you’re not at all overwhelmed by the choice, and you know that you’re a welcome customer there. You’ll also find something that you like and you might even become a regular.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Mascara

estee lauder mascara
Estee Lauder Double Wear Mascara is a zero smudge mascara that you need to try if mascara usually smudges on you. The brush on the wand is small and that makes it easy to get every single lash. The Double Wear Mascara really does stay put on lashes and does not budge. When you wash it off with water, the mascara slides off in little clumps and really does come off quite easily.

But what you want to know is whether the mascara is any good.

It is!

This Estee Lauder Mascara is meant for lengthening rather than adding volume, but I found that my lashes did look thicker when I wore it. They also looked super long since the size of the wand let me get to every single lash from root to tip.

MAC Technakohl Liner

I am currently loving MAC’s Technakohl Liner. I have it in Graphblack and Brownborder, but I find myself using the brown one since it’s so dark that it’s almost black.

Technakohl is superior to some of the other liners because it doesn’t smudge or fade during the day, but it’s still creamy enough to go on easily and to smudge before it sets. The mechanical pencil means that it’s great to take on the go because you’ll never have to sharpen it.

Use this if you regularly line your lower lash line.

It is a best-seller at MAC!  $23 at MAC counters.

Clinique Blended Face Powder and Brush

clinique powderClinique Blended Face Powder comes in 9 colours but the colour that I have is Invisible Blend, and I have to say that it blends in so well that I can’t even see it on my skin. It is a colour that would work on everyone, and the powder itself is so sheer and soft that you really can’t make a mistake no matter what colour you choose.

This is probably one of the sheerest powders I’ve ever tried, and it’s great for setting makeup without making your skin look too dry or powdery. Try it.

Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup

If you haven’t been able to find Jane Iredale cosmetics, it could be because you haven’t been looking in the right places. This line of mineral makeup is found mostly at spas here in Canada.

In any case, I recently had a chance to try some of the products from Jane Iredale. I tried their Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder which you buff on to your skin with a brush.

Like most mineral foundations that I’ve tried, the colour match was a bit off. It looked fine in the container but it went on slightly light and was not an exact match. The next colour up was much too dark, but no matter. It was fixed up with a bit of bronzer swept across the face and followed by a touch of blush that was extremely natural looking.

The makeup does have shimmer in it, but I was quite pleased to see that once the makeup was on, the shimmer wasn’t that noticeable on my skin, even out in the sunlight! I also loved that I could use this as a concealer – I just layered some extra foundation under my eyes and the look was natural.

The makeup lasts all day, and resists sweat and oil for the most part. Because I’m used to the way that my skin looks, I thought that there was too much product on my skin, but I know that from a distance, my skin looked perfect. It was flawless and if that’s the look that you want, you’ll be able to get it with Jane Iredale.

What I love about this brand was the colour selection available for all the products and its absolutely weightless feel.

This brand is sold at salons and spas and you may also be able to find it at a dermatologist’s office.

Swatches from OPI’s Hello Kitty Collection

I posted about the OPI x Hello Kitty holiday collection, and now here are some swatches.

The brand collaborated with Hello Kitty and it all started with the colour “Lets be Friends!” which they had released before, and it had been a best-seller.

Here it is in two different lights:

And with the bottle. You can see that it’s a really pretty light pink which looks almost like white. Super trendy for right now. Unfortunately, the formula is super streaky and it was difficult to get a streak-free finish in 2 coats. I used three coats which was better but not ideal. I feel like three coats of polish with a primer and a top coat is a bit much. It also makes the polish flake off much more quickly. This manicure only stayed on my nails for a couple of days because I wasn’t feeling it.

I tried topping it with one of the glitter top coats that are part of this collection: This is Let’s Celebrate.

It’s a sheer pink polish with pink glitter. It looked so pretty in the bottle but it wasn’t glittery enough for me.

Wasn’t a winner.

Then I tried a Hush of Blush. It was ok. Formula is nice and it went on creamy, but I just don’t like shimmers. I’m more of a cream kind of girl.

So then I tried My Favourite Gal Pal. This is an almost jelly kind of blue. I felt kind of meh about it. I like inky blues, and this came close to my favourite colours. The formula was smooth and two coats gave me opaque coverage, which was nice. I’d want it to be a bit darker for holiday? Especially for fall?

You can check out the original collection here. All the colours are in salons now.

Beautiful Packaging from Lanolips

I can’t help myself when it comes to this beautiful Lanolips packaging. The old-school writing and the beautiful colours mean that these products stand out in my bathroom.

Quick reviews of what you see above:

Skip out on the lip water. It’s holographic and pretty but it doesn’t really moisturize.

The Face mask is ok. It’s moisturizing but doesn’t really give skin that glowy bouncy look that I’d want. It’s a leave-on face mask… so more like a moisturizer, but if you don’t want to leave it on, you could wash it off. I left it on for a night… with lukewarm results.

The 01 Ointment (on the left) seems to be the best. It’s emollient and really gives relief to dry skin and lips. I’m keeping that one around.

Lanolips is from Australia but is now available in Canada. Anyone try it?

Skin Actives Scientific Pumpkin Spice Mask

Pumpkin Spice season is here, and these mask and exfoliant duo both smell like amazing pumpkin spice, but have fermented pumpkin enzyme to help exfoliate skin and make it look smoother.

My favourite product is the mask. It tingles when I put it on, and I like that feeling because I know that it’s working. Then you rub it into your skin as you wash it off because it has micro-fine exfoliating beads in it. It leaves your skin super clean, and smelling of pumpkin spice.

Available online.

YSL Libre Eau de Parfum Review

New this fall from Yves Saint Laurent is Libre Eau de Parfum, and it is on counters everywhere already.

This is the perfect scent for fall – it’s floral but warm, which means that if you love floral fragrances, you can transition into cooler weather with a warmer scent.

Notes are: Lavender Essence, Orange Blossom, and musk.

The orange and the lavender are an unusual combination. The orange is brighter but still a floral and the lavender is soapy.  There’s a bit of vanilla in the drydown but the floral and musk notes keep this from being a gourmand.  Despite the lavender, this isn’t soapy or clean.  It’s a true floral feminine fragrance. It smells pretty.

$125 for 50ml.

Smashbox O-Gloss

Some time last week, I got to try Smashbox’s O-Gloss. Like the O-Glow Blush that came before it, Smashbox O-Gloss promises to customize its colour to your lips. And of course, what it really does it turn the same bright pink shade no matter who applies it and where they apply it. Want proof? Take some of the product and rub it into the back of your hand. You’ll see that it turns bright pink. If you like the colour, then super, if not, then keep moving, I guess.
