Spring Skincare

It’s about time I wrote something about updating your skincare routine for the spring, and a video is coming soon!  That being said, I was taking a break from my retinol, and got told to just get back on it, because now that my skin has adapted to the side effects of it, I may as well keep using it to keep seeing the benefits. In fact, did you know that you can keep using most of your actives throughout the warmer months as long as you also wear sunscreen each and every day.  Wearing sunscreen will prevent any new pigmentation issues from forming, and in the long run, it will actually mean that you need to wear less makeup!

So I’ve turned back to SkinCeuticals which is one of my favourite skincare brands – and I’m into their retinol cream ($70).  It is 0.3% which is very concentrated so I did see some peeling and redness when I started to use it.

But I’m topping it with a rose hip oilto keep my skin feeling comfortable and if you’re not into the oils, you could for sure do a moisturizer.  You can see it in the picture above – I’m also using Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) at least a few times a week, and washing off the day with an oil-based cleanser because it seems to get everything off.

Finally – if you’re really taking care of your skin, you need to be wearing sunscreen daily.  Not just when you anticipate being in the sun, but you need it for those times that you’re sitting by the window, or have direct exposure while you’re in your car.  Basically, incidental exposure to the sun is unavoidable and you’ll notice the effects of daily sunscreen in a few years.

I’m loving this Vichy Ideal Soleil sunscreen in SPF 60.  I use the tinted formula and it’s absolutely amazing.  It’s giving me a bit of coverage, and I top it with a powder to set it.  This has lasted me through the most intense workouts and the longest days ever. It comes off when I wash it off at the end of the day.

How are you updating your routine for spring?

Incidentally, if you want to see my whole skincare routine right now: it’s on my Insta…

MAC Chic Trick Lip Pencil

I’ve had this MAC Chic Trick lip pencil since 2015, and took it out of my stash because it seemed like such a bright pretty fuschia that’s perfect for spring.

And you can see in the picture that it is a nice bright colour.  But the pencil wasn’t as pigmented as I would have liked, and it was so hard that it took many passes to get the colour to where you see it on my lips.  I like to use lip pencils to line and fill my lips, so there’s a lot of tugging if the pencil is dry and unusable. I like pencils because they’re matte and usually last a long time on my lips and this one was too pretty not to use, but I definitely wouldn’t say that it’s my favourite brand of lip pencil.

The Ordinary Rose Hip Seed Oil

For those times when you’ve completely overdone it and your skin needs some TLC, there are oils that you should have on hand and lately I’ve been trying The Ordinary 100% Organic Rose Hip Seed Oil.  It is $9.90 (just a little more than your fancy coffee) which makes it an affordable choice as something to try in your skincare routine.

The Rose Hip Seed Oil is perfect for dry skin – it’s thick and heavy and it really stays on your skin making it feel nice and comfortable.  Because I have oily skin, it’s not one that I use every day, but I keep it on hand for those times that my skin needs some calming.

It’s not a life-changing product but one that I like to have on hand. Use it after any of your other treatments – it could be the last step of a moisturizing routine, or even used on top of actives to help your skin feel comfortable while they do their work.

Available online or at The Bay.

Favourite Blush

Just a little love for one of my favourite blushes: Bobbi Brown Illuminating Bronzing Powder in Maui.  It’s a warm bright pink blush with gold shimmer.  Not sure why they call it a bronzing powder since it’s not bronze at all, but it looks nice on warmer skin tones.

Pick it up at the Bobbi Brown counter for $54.

This huge compact has lasted me forever.  I find that blush is very difficult to use up.  I’ve had this one for a few years and you can see that there’s barely a dent in it. It’s very pigmented so a little bit goes a long way.

Keep It or Use it?

I had to post this: I have a few sprays – a few days worth – left of this fabulous scent.  It’s discontinued so I was torn whether to use it or keep the last little bit.  I mean, once this is done, I’m just going to move on to something new anyway, but will I miss it?

At the end of the day, it’s a consumable so I should just consume it since that’s what I’m meant to do.

You can read my original review of it here.

Marc Anthony Grow Long 2-in-1 Dry Shampoo and Conditioner

Have you ever spent the whole day in the kitchen, and then come out still smelling like food?  Or maybe you worked at Tim Hortons and left smelling like donuts.  Or KFC and then you smelled like fried chicken.  Of course, you’re going to wash your clothes to get the smell out, but when you’ve had a blowout and want to keep it, you’re going to need something that gets out the smell.

That’s where the Marc Anthony Grow Long Dry Shampoo and Conditioner comes in.

It’s meant for your roots and your ends, so it’s great for refreshing all your hair.  The formula is clear and without residue and it smells kind of like berries.  I spray it more heavily on my roots, which are oily anyway, and then lightly throughout my hair to refresh.  I make sure it’s all in by massaging into my scalp a bit and then I’m good to go.  This is definitely a more moisturizing, less chalky version of most dry shampoos and keep in mind that it’s a conditioner too so it is meant to take care of your ends too.

You can find it in drugstores now.

OPI Always Bare For You Has Summer’s Best Nail Polish Colours

If you like sheer nail polish, then this is the collection for you.  OPI’s Always Bare For You has the nicest sheer polishes that I’ve ever come across.  Not only does 2 coats of each shade give just a wash of colour, but the formula is out of this world.  It is creamy and streak-free, just a dream to apply.

The picture above also has the Infinite Shine base coat and top coat – those are the ones that I use with every polish I wear and they are amazing.  I can definitely get at least 5 days out of a manicure with them, and then just get minor chips, so I’m quite happy with them.

Here are swatches.  Please – I know I have hangnails – I’m a real person, so… ignore them.

The lightest pink is Bare My Soul.  This went on lighter than I thought it would.  It is a sheer pastel pink.

Then there is Ring Bare-er.  This is a sheer blue.  It was my least favourite shade.  I feel like it made me look sick…

Engage-meant to be is one of my favourites: it’s a sheer purple.

Also, pictures I take in the car just turn out the best!

Here is Baby Take a Vow.  I thought it would be my favourite because it’s the perfect medium pink that just blurs out any imperfections on your nail, but it’s definitely between this one and Bare My Soul.

Finally, Throw Me a Kiss, which is one of 2 shimmer shades.  This is a sheer with duochorome pink/purple shimmer.  It was very pretty and it almost made me love shimmer in a nail polish.  Almost.

Chiffon’d of You is the other shimmer colour – it is a pale white.

There you have it!

These are available in salons now: nail polish for $10.50 ($13.30 CAN) each, and Infinite Shine colors will retail for $13.00 ($16.40 CAN) each and $6.50 ($8.20 CAN) each at Professional Salons.
