Fragrance Friday: Tom Ford Santal Blush

My latest favourite from Tom Ford is Santal Blush.  It’s polished, airy, and cool – perfect for a bit of aloofness or to wear in a time where you think things are going to be hot.

The main note of Santal Blush is sandalwood.  Dry and almost powdery, it’s a note that’s present from the beginning to the end of the fragrance.  The sandalwood is blended with cinnamon, cumin, ylang ylang, balsam, jasmine, rose and musk – but what I smell most is a clean airy sandalwood.

The scent is so easy to wear.  Light but present and just interesting enough to feel like something special.

Lasting power is amazing and it’s something you can smell from a bit away, and that’s just with 1 little spray.  I love a scent that lasts and lasts, and this is definitely one of those. I can smell it on my clothes at the end of the day, and it’s almost the same as what it was at the beginning of the day.

Available online and at Holt Renfrew.  $275 for 50mL.

Sothy’s Hydra 3Ha Range

We are big fans of Sothys Paris skincare over here – their formulas are rich and moisturizing and make skin feel so supple.

The latest range, Hydra 3Ha is perfect if you have dehydrated not dry skin.  Dehydrated skin is lacking moisture, while dry skin is lacking oil. I actually have dehydrated skin that’s oily.  It lacks water content because of my age and the climate that I live in, but overall, it can look pretty greasy if I don’t take care of it.  My challenge is to put moisture back into my skin and then seal it in so that it doesn’t escape.

Sothys Hydra 2Ha range aims to restore moisture daily, with the help of 3 products.

The Hydrating Comfort Youth Cream ($149.93) has a creamy rich texture that’s great for normal-dry skin.  I find that it really does create a barrier on the skin help to prevent moisture loss.

The Hydrating Youth Cream ($149.93) is much lighter and is more like a lotion that melts into your skin.  It is for normal or combination skin.

If you need an extra dose of moisture, or maybe you want to infuse your skin with hydration before applying any kind of treatment, you might want to try the Hydra-Smoothing Mask ($97.43), which is a super rich cream formula.  Apply for 10 minutes and then rinse off for immediate results.

Available in spas now, to find a retailer near you, visit www.sothys.ca.

Differin Gel Review

Differin is a retinoid product that in Canada is only available with a prescription, but in the US, a low concentration of it is available over-the-counter.  So guess what I did when I was in San Francisco over the Christmas break?  I went to the local CVS and found it, right next to Neutrogena and Yes To products.

It’s labelled and recommended as an acne treatment, but it also has the side effect of softening skin, reducing fine lines, and increasing collagen production in the skin, which are all things that people want as their skin ages.  So, you can use this for acne, and you will notice that your skin will be better in the long run and you can keep using it if your skin gets used to it.

The only version that’s available is the Differin gel, as opposed to the cream, and that was fine with me, because in all the reviews that I had read, the gel was the more recommended product.  Apparently it tends not to pill and absorbs with a matte finish that’s more preferred by people with acne since they typically have oily skin.

0.1% of Adapalene is WAY stronger than any retinol product that’s available over-the-counter.  This will be stronger than Drunk Elephant’s Protini (which I’m dying to try), any of The Ordinary’s retinols (even their Granactive), Skinceuticals’ retinols (click the link to see my before and afters), Paula’s Choice boosters, etc.  Even if you use those, you’re going to have to let your skin get used to using Adapalene.  It helps your skin exfoliate itself which is how it prevents wrinkles and also helps your skin look smoother and better.

The best time to use it is at night time, and you could even mix it with a Benzyl Peroxide product if you’re really trying to get rid of acne.  What you’ll notice when you first start to use it your skin will be tight and dry.  Keep using it daily and you might see some peeling, and if you keep going, your skin might get irritated.  That’s when you’re going to stop using it because it’ll make you uncomfortable, and your skin might look worst than it did before you used it.  This is all normal.

But what you could do is use it once or twice a week to start.  If you find that your skin is still looking and feeling great after a few weeks, start using it one more night each week for a few weeks, and then one more night and one more night, until you find that you can use it every night with your skin looking and feeling comfortable.  It will take 6 weeks for you to see results – less acne, fewer fine lines, better skin overall.

So I used Differin for about that time.  And I found that I don’t love it.  I probably don’t suffer from enough acne to really warrant such a strong treatment.  Right now, I just have one breakout and it’s miniscule and can be easily treated with Niacinamide.  It made my skin dry and tight, and I found that I still broke out.  I also find that my skin does better when I use glycolic acid on a regular basis.  I want my skin to be really smooth – and that’s even when I don’t have acne – and glycolic and lactic acid does that for me.  It makes the texture so great, and makeup goes on really smoothly.

Differin could also be used on KP which I have on my upper arms, and I could use it for that, but we’ll see.  In Canada, Differin is available with a prescription.

I think this cost me about $23USD.

Bumble and Bumble Bb.Curl Butter Masque and Luminous Oil Spray

I’ve been using these two great products from the Bumble and Bumble Bb.Curl line: the Butter Masque ($49) and the Luminous Oil Spray ($42); actually, I liked the Butter Masque so much that I used it every time I washed my hair because it took care of frizz like nothing else. In fact, I posted a picture of the empty tube.  That’s how quick it went.

The Butter Masque actually has a very thick butter-like texture.  You need to put it on wet hair so that it emulsifies a little but then it coats the strands and helps keep moisture in.  Curly hair is usually very dry and needs to have moisture sealed in.  Most hair dressers recommend applying product on the hair when it’s wet, and then scrunching it in to help the hair curl nicely.  This helps keep moisture in in the shower, and then you can apply other curl products after washing your hair.

Bumble and Bumble says that you can also apply this to dry hair as a pre-treatment, but I found that to be difficult to do.  The masque is so thick that it actually tugs on the hair when I tried to apply it.

I treat my hair when it’s still wet, but then follow up dry hair with the Bumble and Bumble Luminous Oil Spray.  It’s silicone-free but full of oils and adds real shine to your hair, taming any crazy frizz.  A little bit goes a long way, so I apply a couple of sprays, work it in with my hands, and then see if I need more.  Usually, that’s enough. This spray is best for thick wavy hair, so if your hair is fine (and mine is) really be careful about how much you use.

Available at salons or online.

Beaute Lipgloss

In case you’re unfamiliar, Beaute is the line of brushes and lip glosses by Canadian makeup artist Beau Nelson.

If you’ve been looking for a gloss that’s completely unsticky yet stays on for a long time, then look no further. The Beaute Luminous Volume Gloss goes on smooth and actually moisturizes your lips. I thought that this gloss wore like a lipstick but felt so comfortable on my lips.I’m loving the shade that I got too – Paramour, a lovely pink with golden shimmer in it. It’s perfect worn with darker eye makeup and I use it almost daily.

You can buy products in the Beaute line at the Beaute website.

A Bit About Peels!

Hi Friends!

I made a little video about peels, and if you’re extra interested in skincare you might want to check it out.

Peels are great for reducing acne, clearing up acne scarring, hyper-pigmentation, and even fine lines.

At home peels are relatively gentle, as long as you follow instructions and monitor your skin.  If you feel unbearable tingling or burning, wash it off.  If your skin is too dry afterwards, wait a few days until you reapply.  And always always wear sunscreen.  Peels will reveal new skin and you want to protect it so that you don’t do even more damage to it.

Derma-E Acne Blemish

The most popular anti-acne products from the drugstore can be so drying on your skin that you might actually be inclined to stop using them, which means that they won’t really have time to do what they’re supposed to do.  The flip side is that you keep using them and end up with dry and tight-feeling skin which is a pain to take care of, especially in the winter.
Your other option is tea tree oil: proven to be an effective antibacterial, it’s an oil that works on acne.
That’s the active ingredient in these @dermae anti-acne products. If other anti acne ingredients dry out your skin, these might be a better option. The serum even has glycerine in it so it’s moisturizing, but the Cleansing Wash is what I can’t live without.  I use it in the morning and at night, and I’ve noticed a deterioration in my skin when I stop using it, so I’m inclined to keep it in my routine.
If you need effective anti-acne options check these out.
Available at Dermae.com.

Vivier Platiné GrenzCine Eye Cream

Some people like eye creams because they are specially formulated to be heavier on the thin skin around the eye area.  They can also be creamy so they don’t tug as you apply them, and if they’re really good, they’re kind of matte so that makeup doesn’t smudge in that area.

That’s what you’re getting with the Vivier Platiné GrenzCine Eye Cream which is made with a host of good-for-skin ingredients.  These include Squalane (a plant oil) that’s listed as the second ingredient, and peptides which are great antioxidants.

Will this get rid of dark circles?  Probably not.  The only thing that can do that is rest, water, certain laser treatments, and makeup.  But it is good for hydrating the skin around the eye area without irritation or greasiness.

Available through your dermatologist or high end skincare stores. $191.

Random Find: Oligo Blacklight Blue Shampoo

Highlighted hair needs to be toned regularly, and I love ashy hair more than anything so I’m all about this richly pigmented blue shampoo.  So I don’t have blonde hair, but I got the Oligo Blacklight Blue Shampoo in a goodie bag, so I decided to try it.  The Blue shampoo is meant for blonde or highlighted hair and the blue pigment in the shampoo minimizes brassiness by counteracting the orange that can come up in hair.

I used the Backlight shampoo once and I immediately saw a difference.  The brassiness was completely toned down, and I got the neutral hair that was closer to what I was born with.  I didn’t even use the blue conditioner because I don’t have it, and just used my regular Viviscal conditioner, and I still saw a difference.

The instructions say to use this once a week or so, and that’s what I’m going to do for as long as I can.  I actually don’t even shampoo every time, and sometimes just run conditioner through my hair, and hopefully that helps hold on to the blue pigment a bit more.

You can pick this shampoo up at salons.

The Cheapest (and Best) Contour Palette

I just posted about this palette on Instagram, and I just had to post it here too.  I dug this palette out and then dipped into it and couldn’t believe how nice it is.

Contouring – I just can’t quit it.  As much as I try to minimize my makeup routine, I also miss seeing my cheekbones and so contour is the one step that I keep coming back to.

Elf Contour PaletteThe colours seemed so great in the pan that I couldn’t help but try it.  There’s a warm brown bronze colour, a darker greyish-brown contour shade, a matte yellow highlighter and a shimmery pale highlight colour.  This contour palette is well thought out and I have to say that I’ve used all these colours because they are so well formulated and easy to use.

The shimmery highlight is not too shimmery – it’s just shimmery enough for daily use – and if that seems to much, you can blend it with the matte powder that’s in the kit.

I love the matte pale yellow powder for setting (and lightening) under my eyes, and I use the darkest contour colour in the hollows of my face.

When it’s just $8 at drugstores and super easy to use, you really can’t go wrong. The shades are sheer enough that they blend easily making the whole contour and highlight situation look great.
