John Masters Organics Honey and Hibiscus Collection

My dry and damaged hair doesn’t just need hydration in the winter – I actually need it all year round because of the dry climate where I live.  I also work out regularly, and like to wash the sweat out of my hair, so I wash my already dry hair in a dry climate, more than I probably should, but definitely as much as I need to.  Oh, and I colour my hair which can be drying… and I heat style at least once a week… So, my hair is dry and needs TLC.

I’ve been using John Masters Organics Honey and Hibiscus Collection to give my hair some TLC.  The shampoo ($29) is sulfate-free which should be more gentle on my hair, and combined with the conditioner ($29) and mask ($39), my hair is conditioned but not weighed down. Perfect for curly hair because it will help your curls be defined not flat or greasy. Despite being silicone-free, the conditioner and mask have lots of slip to them – which is nice when you’re dealing with hair that has tangles.

My also really love the scent of these – herby, and fresh, it even gets me compliments so I’m a big fan.

Available at natural grocery stores and in salons.

Bio-Oil Gel

Guys, I know you’re supposed to bury the lead, but I’m just going to tell you that the new Bio-Oil Gel is pretty amazing.  It’s superior in its moisturizing abilities to the regular Bio-Oil, and if your skin needs some serious TLC this winter, then you need to add it to your apres-shower regimen.

The gel is a pretty pink colour just like the oil and feels like thick oil in your hands.  A little bit goes a long way but unlike the oil, you can apply it a little more thickly on damp skin and it actually seems to stick sealing all that moisture in.

Get it at the drugstore and try it out for yourself.

$22.99 for 200mL.

StriVectin Anti-Wrinkle Skin Reset

So many of us are getting ready for the spring break, and one way to do that might be to focus on your skin and try StriVectin’s Anti-Wrinkle Skin Reset.  Created to improve radiance, fine lines, skin texture, and firmness, the Anti-Wrinkle Skin Reset is a 4 week system that takes the skin through 4 different treatments to combat the appearance of the signs of aging.

The first step of the system targets hydration.  It gets the skin rejuvenated and healthy-feeling.

The second week focuses on elasticity and fine lines.

Then, radiance.

Finally, resiliency and deeper wrinkles.

Because the treatments are in a light serum consistency, you apply them before your regular moisturizer or oils.  I used them in tandem with my retinol at night and found that gave me great results. I used it on top of lighter serums in the morning (I was using niacinamide) and that worked great too.  I could incorporate all the serums seamlessly into my routine and found that mostly, my skin was happy with the little extra dose of moisture and peptides it was getting. The silicone and glycerine in the formulas made makeup go on well and actually stick to the skin.

All of StriVectin’s formulas are made with NIA-114 peptides which help strengthen the skin.

After 4 weeks of use, you’re done with the system and have skin that has benefitted from consistent use of peptides which are proven to help with skin elasticity and collagen production.

Available online or at Shoppers Drug Mart for $114.

Vivier Sheer Broad Spectrum SPF 45

I’ve been wearing sunscreen daily for a year now, and the change in my skin is noticeable.  Combined with retinol and vitamin C and other skin treatments, the difference is that my skin actually stays clear instead of clearing up and getting pigmented.

Finding sunscreens that I like has been key.  If you find one that you like, and can afford to keep buying it, then you’ll be more likely to wear it daily. Vivier Sunscreen Lotion with SPF 45 has been what I’m reaching for these days.  Formulated to be broad spectrum, this sunscreen has a bit of a white cast, but it’s super light and it dries more clear than it goes on. Really, I’m applying this on my neck too so it really blends all the way down.

Vivier’s sunscreen is formulated specially to be worn under any conditions.  It’s made with silica which sets to a soft touch, and it spreads evenly on your skin.  It also doesn’t pill when you put makeup on top and it doesn’t have a white cast.  I’ve been using it with powder foundation which I just pat on and it works like a charm.

What I love the most is that this sunscreen is SPF 45 and almost 10% Zinc Oxide, but it’s not white at all.  I apply 2 pumps and spread it on my face and neck.  It seems to be slightly white at first, but then it really does set and look absolutely normal on your skin.  The key is to blend it out before it dries and to apply it everywhere, even on your neck, so that everything looks normal.

Vivier is available at spas and dermatologists’ offices.

Aveda Sensory Journey

Back in 2007, I went into an Aveda store and started smelling everything – and you know how amazing their products smell.  And a sales associate thought I might like to create my own perfume since I liked the vibe of their scents and so I went on the Aveda Sensory Journey. The journey is really simple and it’s made to help you find your favourite scent without you using any of your usual biases towards scents or scent families.  Here’s my perfume from back then.  It’s pretty strong with one spray being more than enough.  And it’s something that I can still smell on myself when the day’s done and that’s pretty rare.  I also like that the notes of the scent are maintained from beginning to end.  This doesn’t warm up on me and stays nice and fresh, which is something that I like in a perfume.

The Sensory Journey starts with a questionnaire asking you what your skin type is and what your other tendencies are (ex. are you hot a lot, does your skin burn easily, do you follow routines, etc.).

So, you fill out their questionnaire, and then they figure out what “nature” you are. Then they ask you to sit in a chair, close your eyes, and smell a few different scents. To each one, you say “yes”, “no”, or “not today”.

That is the part that can be slightly confusing, because most of Aveda’s scents smell really good. Good to the point that you could keep smelling them and not get tired because they’re so organic and fresh smelling. It really was difficult for me to pick one I liked the best, and there were only a couple that I didn’t really like – and even for those I was unsure.

At the end, I went for the scent that I had smelled first: Water #6 which is also the scent of their Shampure shampoo. I love it. The notes are ylang ylang and coriander among other things and I was suprised that I didn’t go for the one that was sandalwood and jasmine since that is what I’m usually drawn to in a perfume.

Overall I think the survey is not needed and if you were going through this journey, I suggest that you just sit there and smell everything they have with your eyes closed. Find the one you like.

Fragrance Friday: Tom Ford Santal Blush

My latest favourite from Tom Ford is Santal Blush.  It’s polished, airy, and cool – perfect for a bit of aloofness or to wear in a time where you think things are going to be hot.

The main note of Santal Blush is sandalwood.  Dry and almost powdery, it’s a note that’s present from the beginning to the end of the fragrance.  The sandalwood is blended with cinnamon, cumin, ylang ylang, balsam, jasmine, rose and musk – but what I smell most is a clean airy sandalwood.

The scent is so easy to wear.  Light but present and just interesting enough to feel like something special.

Lasting power is amazing and it’s something you can smell from a bit away, and that’s just with 1 little spray.  I love a scent that lasts and lasts, and this is definitely one of those. I can smell it on my clothes at the end of the day, and it’s almost the same as what it was at the beginning of the day.

Available online and at Holt Renfrew.  $275 for 50mL.

Sothy’s Hydra 3Ha Range

We are big fans of Sothys Paris skincare over here – their formulas are rich and moisturizing and make skin feel so supple.

The latest range, Hydra 3Ha is perfect if you have dehydrated not dry skin.  Dehydrated skin is lacking moisture, while dry skin is lacking oil. I actually have dehydrated skin that’s oily.  It lacks water content because of my age and the climate that I live in, but overall, it can look pretty greasy if I don’t take care of it.  My challenge is to put moisture back into my skin and then seal it in so that it doesn’t escape.

Sothys Hydra 2Ha range aims to restore moisture daily, with the help of 3 products.

The Hydrating Comfort Youth Cream ($149.93) has a creamy rich texture that’s great for normal-dry skin.  I find that it really does create a barrier on the skin help to prevent moisture loss.

The Hydrating Youth Cream ($149.93) is much lighter and is more like a lotion that melts into your skin.  It is for normal or combination skin.

If you need an extra dose of moisture, or maybe you want to infuse your skin with hydration before applying any kind of treatment, you might want to try the Hydra-Smoothing Mask ($97.43), which is a super rich cream formula.  Apply for 10 minutes and then rinse off for immediate results.

Available in spas now, to find a retailer near you, visit www.sothys.ca.

Differin Gel Review

Differin is a retinoid product that in Canada is only available with a prescription, but in the US, a low concentration of it is available over-the-counter.  So guess what I did when I was in San Francisco over the Christmas break?  I went to the local CVS and found it, right next to Neutrogena and Yes To products.

It’s labelled and recommended as an acne treatment, but it also has the side effect of softening skin, reducing fine lines, and increasing collagen production in the skin, which are all things that people want as their skin ages.  So, you can use this for acne, and you will notice that your skin will be better in the long run and you can keep using it if your skin gets used to it.

The only version that’s available is the Differin gel, as opposed to the cream, and that was fine with me, because in all the reviews that I had read, the gel was the more recommended product.  Apparently it tends not to pill and absorbs with a matte finish that’s more preferred by people with acne since they typically have oily skin.

0.1% of Adapalene is WAY stronger than any retinol product that’s available over-the-counter.  This will be stronger than Drunk Elephant’s Protini (which I’m dying to try), any of The Ordinary’s retinols (even their Granactive), Skinceuticals’ retinols (click the link to see my before and afters), Paula’s Choice boosters, etc.  Even if you use those, you’re going to have to let your skin get used to using Adapalene.  It helps your skin exfoliate itself which is how it prevents wrinkles and also helps your skin look smoother and better.

The best time to use it is at night time, and you could even mix it with a Benzyl Peroxide product if you’re really trying to get rid of acne.  What you’ll notice when you first start to use it your skin will be tight and dry.  Keep using it daily and you might see some peeling, and if you keep going, your skin might get irritated.  That’s when you’re going to stop using it because it’ll make you uncomfortable, and your skin might look worst than it did before you used it.  This is all normal.

But what you could do is use it once or twice a week to start.  If you find that your skin is still looking and feeling great after a few weeks, start using it one more night each week for a few weeks, and then one more night and one more night, until you find that you can use it every night with your skin looking and feeling comfortable.  It will take 6 weeks for you to see results – less acne, fewer fine lines, better skin overall.

So I used Differin for about that time.  And I found that I don’t love it.  I probably don’t suffer from enough acne to really warrant such a strong treatment.  Right now, I just have one breakout and it’s miniscule and can be easily treated with Niacinamide.  It made my skin dry and tight, and I found that I still broke out.  I also find that my skin does better when I use glycolic acid on a regular basis.  I want my skin to be really smooth – and that’s even when I don’t have acne – and glycolic and lactic acid does that for me.  It makes the texture so great, and makeup goes on really smoothly.

Differin could also be used on KP which I have on my upper arms, and I could use it for that, but we’ll see.  In Canada, Differin is available with a prescription.

I think this cost me about $23USD.

Bumble and Bumble Bb.Curl Butter Masque and Luminous Oil Spray

I’ve been using these two great products from the Bumble and Bumble Bb.Curl line: the Butter Masque ($49) and the Luminous Oil Spray ($42); actually, I liked the Butter Masque so much that I used it every time I washed my hair because it took care of frizz like nothing else. In fact, I posted a picture of the empty tube.  That’s how quick it went.

The Butter Masque actually has a very thick butter-like texture.  You need to put it on wet hair so that it emulsifies a little but then it coats the strands and helps keep moisture in.  Curly hair is usually very dry and needs to have moisture sealed in.  Most hair dressers recommend applying product on the hair when it’s wet, and then scrunching it in to help the hair curl nicely.  This helps keep moisture in in the shower, and then you can apply other curl products after washing your hair.

Bumble and Bumble says that you can also apply this to dry hair as a pre-treatment, but I found that to be difficult to do.  The masque is so thick that it actually tugs on the hair when I tried to apply it.

I treat my hair when it’s still wet, but then follow up dry hair with the Bumble and Bumble Luminous Oil Spray.  It’s silicone-free but full of oils and adds real shine to your hair, taming any crazy frizz.  A little bit goes a long way, so I apply a couple of sprays, work it in with my hands, and then see if I need more.  Usually, that’s enough. This spray is best for thick wavy hair, so if your hair is fine (and mine is) really be careful about how much you use.

Available at salons or online.

Beaute Lipgloss

In case you’re unfamiliar, Beaute is the line of brushes and lip glosses by Canadian makeup artist Beau Nelson.

If you’ve been looking for a gloss that’s completely unsticky yet stays on for a long time, then look no further. The Beaute Luminous Volume Gloss goes on smooth and actually moisturizes your lips. I thought that this gloss wore like a lipstick but felt so comfortable on my lips.I’m loving the shade that I got too – Paramour, a lovely pink with golden shimmer in it. It’s perfect worn with darker eye makeup and I use it almost daily.

You can buy products in the Beaute line at the Beaute website.
