Paul & Joe Hair and Body Mist

This beautiful bottle is Paul and Joe’s new Hair and Body Mist.  Does anyone even use a hair mist? I am finding more and more that my hair products are already so heavily scented that there is no room for a hair mist, so I use this just on my body.

A blend of citrus and earthy greens, light and refreshing, you could say that this mist is the perfect summer fragrance.  It’s not heavy and not at all strong, so you can spray it on your body at will, and know that you’re not going to be overdoing it, at a time where sometimes, it can seem easy to overdo fragrance.

The ingredients are orange flower, white lily extract, and jojoba oil which all balance each other to make a fresh scent that never feels overburdening.

$32, available at beautyBOUTIQUE.ca and certain Shoppers Drug Mart Locations.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Curvitude Mascara

The short review: this mascara made my lashes look major for about a month and then some how the formula changed and didn’t layer as well. But check out the amazing and different wand.  It’s more 4-sided than being round, with different length of bristles on each of the sides. Brushing on the mascara with the inside curved edge really grabbed all the lashes and made for light work on applying this mascara, but turning it helped apply product to the shorter lashes on the inside of the eye.

The formula smudged a bit – in really warm weather, so this wouldn’t be the right summer mascara for me, but I really liked how my lashes looked after I used this one.

On a regular day my lashes looked good – no smudging or flaking but because I did have some flaking on the odd day, I wouldn’t come back to this.

Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick

Consider this the OG of liquid lipsticks, because it came out way before that opaque liquid lipstick trend was popular on Instagram and Youtube.  Not a two-step product, this liquid lipstick is a quick-drying long-wearing light-weight cream dries to a matte finish.

The packaging is nice and sleek which means that it’ll fit into even the smallest of purses. The colour I have is Edition which is a pretty spring-like pink.  It’s got some golden shimmer in it which you can kind of see in the picture which gives your lips some dimension – something that can be lacking when you wear a long-wearing lip cream.

One swipe and you get full coverage on your lips, and the colour is true and long-lasting.  It’ll last you at least all the way to lunch.

$35 at Sephora.

Estee Lauder Perfectionist Pro Rapid Firm + Lift Treatment

When it comes to anti-aging serums, Estee Lauder is well-known for making formulas that actually work and feel so good on the skin that you want to keep using them and they do their job.

Estee Lauder’s Perfectionist Pro is an antioxidant-containing serum that also has a ton of dimethicone in it so it goes on silky smooth and leaves a powdery finish on the skin.  It’s thick and slightly hydrating but because it’s powdery it feels nice on oily skin. All that makes this a great base for foundation or any other coverage products because they glide on easily, and the silicone absorbs oil throughout the day and makes your skin look less shiny.

Estee Lauder says that this is going to give your skin a more lifted and defined look, but you’re going to have to go to the dermatologist for that, so it’s not going to happen with just the serum.  Instead, this will help ward of environmental damage to the skin, is best used with sun protection, and perfect under makeup.

Joico Beach Shake

I think salt sprays are a thing of the past, but windswept and more beachy hair is a vibe that’s just so perfect for the summer.  No one wants to look like they got a blow out because being that done up just doesn’t feel summery!

As an alternative to our regular texturizing products, I’ve discovered Joico Beach Shake, a texturizing finisher.  There are two versions, one for thick hair and one for fine hair.  The version for thick hair is definitely heavier – it feels like there’s more density to the product as it comes out of the bottle.  I use the one for fine hair because that’s the hair that I have, and while I like it tamed, I don’t want it weighed down.

What I love about this texturizer is that it’s dry and not heavy.  It’s matte, so you don’t know that it’s there, but it gives hold to your hair too, so if it gets wet, or humid outside, your style will still be your style.  I’ve used a dry shampoo to give my hair texture before, and this kind of feels like that, but dry shampoo doesn’t have the hold, so that makes this kind of the perfect finisher.

If you use this, keep application close to the roots of the hair so get the most body possible.  I like to spray it into my hair while it’s upside down, I wait for it to kind of set, and then get back up the right way.  I don’t use it on the ends because I don’t need to, but that being said, it’s not drying to my hair at all.  Use after styling as a finisher.

$22.60 at salons.

Smell Like a Forest with Cascadia

I kind of have a thing with essential oils by way of a diffuser I got a long time ago – years ago – that lives on my desk and kind of sways (dictates) the mood around me.  It’s always a good day when the diffuser is on, and anytime it is, people are going to stop by to say hello, take a sniff of the mist coming out of the diffuser, comment about how good it smells.

This Cascadia fragrance oil from Woodlot is what I’ve been burning in it for the past week, and before even seeing the diffuser, the packaging caught everyone’s eye.  The white with rose gold lettering is stunning, luxe, and completely different from the black bottles of oil that everyone else has.

The fragrance inside is stunning and brings a bit of the outside in.  It’s a blend of fir, cedar, and patchouli and smells so earthy that it’s immediately grounding.

Made right here in Canada, out of Vancouver, BC, you can purchase this online.

Rocky Mountain Soap Co.’s New Hand Cream

You might not read the ingredients of most cosmetics, but it’s worth taking a look at the ones posted on the back of Rocky Mountain Soap Company’s new Omega 3 Hand Cream: there’s just 10 ingredients, and chances are, you’ll know what most of them are – and the 10 include water, beeswax, and 2 essential oils for scent.

When Rocky Mountain Soap Company came up with this cream’s formula, they decided to keep on using their toxin-free ingredients, and kept the ingredient list small so that they would only use ingredients that packaged a punch – hence the addition of cold-pressed flax seed oil and shea butter in the mix.

And you know what?  It actually moisturizes so well and isn’t greasy either.

Vanilla Coconut is my flavour, but it also comes in Lavender and Lemongrass, and in tubes small enough to take on the go.

Strivectin Wrinkle Re-Code Line Transforming Melting Serum

When it comes to reading about a “melting serum” you kind of have to see it to believe it, so here’s a picture.

This Strivectin serum comes out of the bottle really thick, and then melts into a slick serum when you rub your fingers together. It’s shiny, clear, but very shiny and it just smooths out any wrinkles or texture on your skin mostly by providing it with tons of hydration.

Aside from providing tons of hydration which can help improve the look of wrinkles, this serum also includes niacinamide, antioxidants, and a peptide to improve the look and texture of the skin through preventing antioxidant damage.

You can get antioxidants and other anti-wrinkle ingredients in other products, but this is the only one that I’ve tried that has a nice thick texture that makes skin look better immediately.  Your skin will be plump and hydrated and will stay that way thanks to the thick texture of the serum, and most serums and creams, even, are too thick to make a lasting impact on wrinkled skin.

Pick it up at Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutique for $79 right now.  Normally $99.

Live Clean Rebalancing Shampoo and Conditioner

It’s definitely that time of year where the warmer weather is starting to have an impact on our skin and that includes hair that’s just a bit oilier and needs something different.  Some people think that it could be a sign that your hair is getting used to your shampoo, but really, the climate makes such a difference.

It’s time to introduce something into your routine that will take care of oiliness without really drying your hair out – especially if your hair is already dry, or colour-treated or curly, you’ll want to make sure that you don’t mess with that texture while you’re trying to control the oiliness.

So there’s Live Clean’s new Mineral Clay Rebalancing Shampoo and Conditioner.  The whole line has been formulated to make sure that there’s some balance between the top and the bottom of your hair shaft.  The addition of mineral clay helps the products absorb excess oil so that nothing looks greasy, but moisturizing ingredients help maintain the texture of the rest of the hair.

I’ve written about Live Clean a few times: I love their concept of clean beauty products at affordable prices.  Everything is sulfate-free, and silicone free, so although you’ll notice that the shampoo lathers and cleans, it’s more gentle, and the silicone-free conditioner still leaves your hair with a silky-smooth feel that you’re used to from traditional conditioners, but without the potential build-up.

Available at Shopper’s Drug Mart, Walmart and Well.ca. 350ml mL, suggested retail: $7.49 to $7.99.

Bio-Oil Celebrates an Anniversary

Bio-Oil is celebrating its 10 year anniversary in Canada this year!  Did you know that it has been around for that long?!

Looking back, it’s kind of amazing that Bio-Oil was at the beginning of the oil trend.  Now, we’re used to seeing oils in makeup, face care, and of course for the body – there are even primers that are oil-based and they actually work – but Bio-Oil came before it all, and that’s kind of amazing.

It’s the original oil that was recommended for scars and stretch marks before there was any other treatment.  The oil is mainly a mineral oil base which is enriched with vitamin A, E, and and other herbal oils so create a blend that applies skin care ingredients while sealing in moisturizer.  It’s very light because it’s mineral oil, and best used on skin that’s still damp from the shower.

Pick Bio-Oil up at the drugstore, along with this cute little Bio-Oil mini that’s 25ml and perfect if you just want to treat smaller scars or using on the go.

Available at drugstores.
