New Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara (Review!)

I first tried this mascara two years ago and loved it then and just now got some more.  I always love going back to mascaras because I want to see if what was good then, still works for me now.

Marc Jacobs Beauty’s Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara.  Named after the velvet shavings Jacobs’ mom used to layer with her mascara to give the look of thicker lashes, this mascara promises to give you major lashes in three strokes or less.

Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir mascara

The short review: yes, it delivers!

The hourglass-shaped wand is nothing special nor is it that unusual – but it totally delivers on tons of volume thanks to a thick formula of gel and waxes.  The formula goes on thick and layers even thicker creating lots of volume.

It’s amazing if you’re a fan of dramatic lashes, but the problem I have is that it smudged all over my eye lid.  I think the combination of sunscreen and just generally oily skin just makes for certain eye products that end up all over my eyelid instead of just where they’re supposed to be, while other people might not have this problem at all.

The mascara does look absolutely amazing, so if this isn’t a problem for you then check it out.

Pick it up at Sephora stores for $31.

Kiehl’s Silk Groom

I’ve been using Kiehl’s Silk Groom for about 10 years, and I’m so glad that there’s better packaging now – this used to be in a shampoo-type bottle, but now it’s in a tube which makes it much easier to squeeze out.

Kiehl’s Creme with Silk Groom is that best friend for your hair. This isn’t the first time that I’ve tried Kiehl’s Creme with Silk Groom but it’s the first time I’ve liked it enough to keep using it. The first time I used this creme, I realize that I used so much that it made my hair greasy. After that, I used a little bit less each time I used it until I figured out how much was the perfect amount.

The key to using this creme is to use “just enough”. I only need a nickel-sized amount and no more. I also don’t use any styling lotion before using this creme because doing so weighs my hair down. The creme leaves my hair so soft and smooth, and best of all, my hair is touchable. This creme provides absolutely no hold at all, and I think that’s a good thing. If you need your hairstyle to stay, finish it with some hairspray. I use the creme on wet hair and I think that it does a good job protecting my hair from heat styling.

$24 at Kiehl’s boutiques and online.

Correctors, Primers, and Skin Perfectors

I’m having a bit of a moment with primers, correctors, and skin perfectors.  I love the idea of them.  Fixing imperfections on your skin before layering on foundation and concealer, so that in theory, you have to use less of everything.  But the problem that I’m having is layering them with everything else I need to use.

After I wash my face in the morning, my vitamin C serum is the first thing I use.  After that I guess I could use a corrector, but I’m going to be using a sunscreen on top of that too, and this is when I find that things get to be too mucky or just too much product.  Once I start rubbing in the sunscreen, I’m essentially messing up the perfector or corrector that I’ve just set.

So I’ve decided that these perfectors, correctors, and primers are my special products – those that I’m going to use for special occasions.

First, meet Dani, part of Dr. Lancer’s skincare brand.  The bottle is a beautiful rose gold, so I thought that the liquid inside would be a rosy gold, but you can see below that it’s more of a peachy gold colour that’s not too too shimmery.

The texture is super fresh and it blends into your skin almost instantly and effortlessly.  It’s weightless, so it does layer well under makeup, but it also looks good on its own because it just adds an extra glow to your skin.

Now check out Stila’s One Step Correct, which is a tone correcting and brightening serum.  Check out the pigments in it in the beautiful design.  And when you squeeze it out, you see the pigments on your hand, like Aquafresh toothpaste.

Here’s a swatch of the corrector:

You can see that it blends out into a beige type colour, which ends up correcting sallowness, redness, and just brightens skin overall.  The texture of this corrector is also very fresh and light.  It’s easy to wear, and almost watery on your skin, which was fine with me.  Unlike the Dani Skin Perfector, I would not wear this without foundation because it kind of makes your skin look to washed out.

Finally, there’s this Paul and Joe Shimmering  primer the past couple of days and I love that it’s not just silicone because those always break me out. Also the ✨ is pretty but not very obvious when you put foundation on top. But. I still can’t do primer except for special occasions. I mean, on top of sunscreen??? I think it’s just too much, and the sunscreen makes everything a bit smudgy anyway.

Do you use something like this before putting on makeup?  Does it make a difference for you?

Fragrance Friday: Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb

This might just be the perfect scent to wear in the spring. Although the name of the Viktor & Rolf fragrance is Flowerbomb, the perfume actually has a great deal of sweetness in it and a slight amount of floral. The notes list a plethora of flowers along with some patchouli but I couldn’t really smell any individual flowers just a general floral note, and I also did not detect the earthiness of patchouli.

The floral is what you get when you first put it on, and on my skin this dried down to what smelled like sweet vanilla. I usually don’t like warm perfumes but I really like this scent because it’s fresh and warm at the same time. In a word, it’s spring. Spring is warm but it’s also slightly chilly. The vanilla warmth that comes through is nice for cold days, but the initial floral freshness is beautiful for warmer days. On me, the scent lasted for a long time which I was very pleased about, but if you don’t like sweet scents at all then be sure not to over-do this one.

Oh, and the bottle is so pretty. I love the way it sparkles and the little flower that looks like the plug on a grenade is a nice touch. Great packaging and a pretty scent.

Clinique Redness Solutions

If you suffer from rosacea or some occasional redness, then you need to check out the @clinique Redness Solutions line.  A line intended to target red and irritated skin – mostly likely suffering from the effects of the change in weather. The line includes a cleanser, an intensive moisturizer, a protective base, and a daily moisturizer.

The Soothing Cleanser ($30) is the best part of the line. It’s not soapy but can remove makeup, it’s creamy without being oily. The cleanser is perfect for all skin types.

The Redness Solutions Daily Protective Base ($31) is green tinted but I promise, that green will hardly show up on your skin. The base goes on smooth and with an spf 15 it really does protect your face from the elements. The Redness Solutions Daily Relief Cream ($60) is creamy smooth without being greasy. The base itself is enough for my skin, but on the days that I need something extra, I add this cream underneath the base.  I’ve also used it after I’ve had laser hair removal or a particularly excessive facial where my face is just too red.  I can use it after being out in the cold, after skiing or skating, and it just totally calms my skin down and feels so good.

You can find this line at all Clinique counters.

Lise Watier La Creme Sublime Yeux – Pressed Serum with Labrador Tea Extract

Pressed serums are a term that’s relatively new to the beauty industry in North America, but they’re actually quite popular in Korean beauty rituals.  The idea behind a pressed serum is that they take the active ingredients of a serum but put them into a cream formula and concentrate them a bit more.  The cream needs to have 60% or more of active ingredients to be able to be called a pressed serum.

Lise Watier’s La Creme Sublime Yeux is a Pressed Serum meaning that it has a high concentration of active ingredients but in the form of a cream not a serum.  It actually has 81% active ingredients, according to them.

Although this looks like a pretty shimmery light golden cream in the jar, the texture of it is a little like gel, and then it smoothes into a cream as you apply it to your skin.

Said to improve puffiness and the incidence to dark circles, I found that this did make my skin more glowy and moisturized so that the skin under my eyes looked better – but I also layer retinol and AHA’s on a regular basis so I’m sure those have something to do with it too.

$85 for 15ml.

Available at The Bay, Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutique, London Drugs, or online.

Bite Beauty Prismatic Pearl MultiSticks with Swatches

The latest and greatest from Bite Beauty is here to fulfill all your holographic makeup dreams.  Of course, I’m talking about their Prismatic Pearl MultiSticks.

First of all, the original multisticks came out in 2016, and I still have the Macaroon multistick in my makeup drawer and I use it all the time because it’s the perfect colour for my lips and cheeks.  Clearly, I need to post an update with a swatch of it.  The formula is creamy and still powdery, very blendable and still sets which is important for a lipstick or cheek colour, or anything really.

So now there are glittery, shimmery multisticks in 5 colours.

Check out the holographic packaging.  That’s how you know that they’re here.

Take them out of the holographic sleeve, and there’s a pretty light pink box.

Which has the Multisticks in the traditional matte black short tubes.

And these are the colours: Pink Pearl, Oyster Pearl, Blush Pearl, Rose Pearl, and Peacock Pearl which is my favourite.

A closer look.

Swatches: Oyster, Rose, Pink, Peacock, and Blush.

I can’t use any of these as a highlighter, but I like the Rose as a blush except it’s quite glittery.  The Oyster and Peacock are great for eyeshadows, but I can’t really use these.  They are too greasy and smear almost right away even if I use them with a primer and lots of powdery.  Just doesn’t do it for me, but I love the colours.

I like the rose on my lips too especially with some lipbalm on before because it makes my lips look nice and plump and healthy.

Pick them up online or at Sephora stores for $28.

New Maybelline New York Super Stay Full Coverage Foundation

This year, Maybelline relaunches their Super Stay Full Coverage Foundation.  Ever since finishing up my bottle of the Fit Me matte foundation, I’ve been a fan of Maybelline foundations.  They offer them in skin-true colours and I’ve managed to find shades at look real on my skin.

Here’s 220 Natural Beige which was too light and not warm enough for me.  I still tried it and wore it around – warmed it up with some bronzer, and added contour to add some depth to my face.

The Super Stay Full Coverage Foundation is actually medium-full coverage.  The best thing about the packaging is that it comes with a pump!  I use one pump and apply where I need most coverage, and then blend it out with a brush.  You could also use 2 pumps and use with a beauty-blender and this would sheer out your finish a bit, but you could just dab on more where you needed more coverage.  The texture is thick, almost moussy, but this applies smoothly and is very easy to blend.  It dries to a powdery matte finish that needs almost no powder.

I say almost, because although this is supposed to last a long time, if you have oily skin, then you might find that it does wear off by lunch time.  For me, that’s about 6 hours, and not near the 12 mark.  Even if I’m having a day where my skin isn’t too oily, I’ll find that the foundation is pretty much worn off by 3 or 4pm, and my skin needs a retouch, but I’m ok with that.  As long as my eye makeup stays on, we’re golden.

I think what makes this foundation a winner for me is the colours that are available.  There are natural-looking and warm options as well as a few options for dark (but not very dark) skin tones.  For the price of around $13, that’s not too bad.

Have you tried Super Stay?  Are you going to try it?

Latest Empty: Paula’s Choice Resist 1% Retinol Booster

Retinols can really help your skin exfoliate more quickly and I’ve noticed enough of a difference that I keep using them.  Lately, I’ve been into the Paula’s Choice Resist 1% Retinol Booster.  1% is quite a high percentage of retinol, so this was a bit drying and extreme when I first tried it, but after a while of consistent use, my skin got used to it and I can use it everyday.

Paula’s Choice calls this a booster because you can mix it into another skincare option so that you’re diluting the retinol, but I just used it straight up on its own and that worked pretty well for me.

The product is liquidy but more like a serum than a toner or lotion, and spreads into skin really easily, which is another reason that I liked it.  I sometimes followed up with an oil if I thought I needed it, but always waited a while to see what my skin needed.  Sometimes I just went straight to bed.

Loved it enough that it’s done!

$52 online – and you can read my original review of it here. You can see my retinol before and afters here.

CoverGirl Clump Crusher Mascara Review

Just a shout-out again to this CoverGirl Clump Crusher mascara.  I accidentally bought this in a dark brown colour instead of black like I was supposed to, but I’m not mad about it.  It’s great because you can really layer lots of mascara on and the brush helps keep all your lashes separated.

It seems that CoverGirl had me in mind when  they made this mascara.

These days, I haven’t got time for my regular face full of makeup, but the one thing that I do make time to apply is my mascara.  Actually, maybe if applying mascara wasn’t such an ordeal for me, I’d have time for the rest of my face, but I love the mascara and so I do apply it the way I do.

People always ask me what kind of mascara I’m wearing.  I like to apply a lot.  Maybe 5 or 6 coats in all.  I’m serious, I don’t stop at just 1 coat or even the 2.  I just keep going because major lashes are kind of my thing.  I actually like it verging on clumpy yet not clumpy.  I just keep on applying until I notice that the coats might be starting to clump a little, and then I stop.

The key is to find a wand and mascara combo that layers well and then keeps all these mascara-coated lashes perfectly separated.

Well, now that mascara combo magic is in CoverGirl’s new LashBlast Clump Crusher Mascara.  This mascara is specially made for people like me.  It’s made so that you can apply as many coats as you want and you won’t get a clump at all.

The secret is the wand, which is slightly curved and has bristles that are placed really close together so that your lashes get separated every time you run the wand through them.

Also the curving brush?  Perfect.  The beginning and end of the curve match the beginning and end of your lashes, so that you get those little lashes right at the end to curve up just so, giving you the perfect fringe.

The formula, of course, facilitates layering and that’s what CoverGirl mascaras all have in common.  They’re waxy and dry in just the right amount of time.  There’s enough time for you to do a coat on both sets of lashes, and then go back and do more coats.  And then the formula lasts all day, although flaking will entirely depend on exactly how much you’ve applied that day.

Still, the whole package is pretty major, and this is definitely my new favourite mascara of all time.

$9.49.
