Givenchy Lunar New Year 2018 Collection

Packaging that makes you say “wow!”

Givenchy’s Lunar New Year 2018 collection has the most beautiful packaging – red with gold blossoms on it.  The lipstick cover is adorned in real printed leather, but the loose powder has a lid of imitation leather.  The Prisme Libre comes in shade #1 ($69) which is a mix of translucent, green, blue, and violet tones to even out redness and dullness and is suitable for all skin tones.

The lipstick is shade #305 ($45) which is a poppy red in a super moisturizing creamy formula.  It lasts a long time and leaves a bit of a stain on the lips when its worn out, which is just the way I like them.

Pick them up at Sephora.ca this January.

Alterna Caviar Infinite Color Hold Collection

Beautiful packaging and the promise that a caviar-enriched formula is better for your hair, Alterna’s shampoos, conditioners, and styling promise that you’ll have better hair thanks to a luxurious formula. I tried the Infinite Color Hold collection which promises to keep hair color fresh for 70 days.  I’m using it, but I’m going over my roots every four weeks anyway, so I’m not sure if this is really keeping my hair from fading.

I will say that the products are extremely moisturizing so they work really well for hair that’s been damaged by too much processing.  I personally found the Vibrancy Serum a little too thick for my fine hair, but I loved the shampoo, conditioner, and the shine spray which I use almost every time I style or straighten my hair.

The shampoo is moisturizing, the conditioner is nice and thick so it actually stays in your hair to help it be moisturized.

You can find Alterna online or at Nordstrom.

Beautycounter’s New Lotion

Beautycounter has oils that I rave about – even though I have oily skin, they work so well for me.  I’ve written about them here and here just for starters.  Now they have a Countermatch line that’s just for skin that doesn’t need oil all the time.  That means that it’s great for everyday because it’s not as heavy as an oil.

The line has a serum ($48), a lotion ($48), eye cream ($39), and a moisture recovery sleeping cream ($55).

I have the Countermatch lotion and it’s incredibly light and smooth.  I would have sworn that it has silicones in it, but it’s actually formulated with silicones or any synthetic polymers.  So the slip in the lotion is thanks to other ingredients.

Here’s the full ingredient list:

Aqua/Water/Eau, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, pentylene glycol, Prunus Domestica (Plum) Seed Extract, Glycerin, C12-16 Alcohols, Squalane, C10-18 Triglycerides, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Palmitic Acid, Olus/Vegetable Oil/Huile végétale, Arginine, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Phytic Acid, Behenyl Alcohol, Xanthan Gum, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Salicylic Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Candelilla Cera/Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax/Cire de candelilla.

Actually the ingredients for every single product is listed on the Beautycounter website, which is another thing that I love about the brand – they are transparent, and they have standards for all the products that they come out with.

The Countermatch lotion is light and satisfying on my skin.  I use it at night after my retinol and sometimes in the morning after my toner.

You can buy Beautycounter online.

Stila Stay All Day Foundation and Concealer

I love me some Stila products.  They actually were the first foundations I bought because they were the only ones that seemed to have shades that looked natural on my skin – they were pricy and only sold at Holt Renfrew at the time, but I kept going back for the tinted moisturizers and wore them for years!

Now there’s the Stay All Day Foundation – which I’ve reviewed before – and now it’s packaged with its own concealer.  The foundation used to be with a spatula many years ago, and also used to be sold with the matching concealer, but last year Stila introduced the airless pump, which is genius, and now it’s repackaged again to include a concealer with the airless pump for the foundation.

I got the shade Honey, which is probably a touch too light for me, but it worked once I added the contour and bronzer.

The concealer, you guys, is amazing.  You can get it to be super full coverage and it just lasts and lasts.  It’s also exactly the same colour as the foundation so you can put on the foundation, and then dot on the concealer just where you need it and the colour just blends into the foundation.  Seriously, it’s the most genius thing ever, and I wish more foundations were sold this way.

I will say that the concealer pot gets a bit messy – check out my picture – but that’s ok.

If you normally use foundation and concealer, or if you need a concealer to add a bit more coverage just in certain areas, then I highly recommend this duo.  The lasting power is amazing too.

Available at Sephora and Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques for $52.

DiorSkin Forever Review

Diorskin Forever Extreme Wear Flawless Makeup came out in 2007, and I’ve gone back to it for a bit because I wanted something that was more coverage and would last a long time for some holiday parties.

The foundation is amazing and it would be awesome for NYE.

To begin, it differs from most other long-wearing foundations because its finish isn’t a pure matte. If your problem with other brands of long-wearing foundation was that they left your skin too unnaturally matte then try this one because that is definitely not the case here. The foundation sort of sticks to the skin as you apply it, and sets to a slightly dewy but stay-put finish.

This foundation stays put to the point that it won’t rub off on your hands if you touch your face or won’t wear away.  It would be the perfect foundation to wear for a very long day.  When I tried it, even if I chanced to rub my forehead or rest my chin against my cheek, no foundation came off on my hands. That in itself was almost a miracle. I do have to note that this foundation is scented but the scent faded a couple of minutes after I applied my foundation, and in any case it was quite pleasant to begin with.

What makes it work is that it’s formulated with polymers that kind of coat your skin and set so that it doesn’t rub off, but comes off with makeup remover, or cleanser.

For long days where looking flawless is key, this foundation is going to be my pick. Added bonus: SPF 35, in case you forget the sunscreen.

Find it at your Dior counter. $64.

Sisley Soir de Lune

Beautiful bottle, right? Well what’s inside is beautiful too!

This whole week, I’ve been a bit tired of warm winter scents and needed something more fresh, so I’ve been wearing Sisley’s Soir de Lune eau de parfum.

I know, I know, when you walk by the Sisley counter, you don’t really think about their fragrances or even realize that they have them. It’s the skincare that distracts you! But you should check out this perfume. It’s one that makes me keep sniffing myself and I have to make a conscious effort to stop myself at two sprays of this one.

The perfume is so well blended that it took me a while to figure out what exactly I was smelling. Though the official top notes include bergamot, mandarin, lemon, coriander, nutmeg and capsicum pepper oils, I find myself smelling the pepper mixed with the middle floral notes. I can especially smell the rose as the fragrance dries down but the spices are still there and add a little something extra to the fragrance.

This is a fragrance that you just have to smell for yourself to know what it’s like so check it out at Holt Renfrew.

Fresh Sugar Face Polish

First off: this really is a polish rather than a scrub. The sugar granules in this are so fine that I found they had all melted away about 30 seconds into scrubbing.

Fresh says that you can use this as a mask and leave it on your face for a little while and then scrub it off, and because it’s in a moisturizing base, it feels so good on the skin as a mask.  It’s got a sweet lemon scent and I kind of love that the ingredients look and feel so natural.

I would only recommend that users with dry skin leave this on, as this scrub is sort of oily (but it does not separate) and that means that it might be nourishing for those with dryer skin. Otherwise, simply wet your face, rub it on, and then rinse thoroughly.

I found that there was a slight layer of oil that was left on my face, but I kind of leave it there when I have dry skin and just use a toner when I have oily skin. You could use this to wash off makeup, but you will have to use a regular soap after using the polish because the oil won’t rinse away with the water.

$30 at Sephora.

What I’m Using Right Now

Skincare update!

These are my favs right now and they’re making my skin more clear and more glowy than it was before.

I’ve had a few breakouts so I’ve been using the @neutrogenacanada anti-acne mask everyday and it’s been working. The mask can be a bit drying, so I only use it at nighttime, and put a moisturizer on top.  That seems to keep the intense dryness at bay but it still lets the mask work on the breakouts. I also feel as if my skin’s gotten used to it so it’s not too drying either.

The @drlancerrx products are newish and I’m loving the Polish.  It really gets everything off, but also is kind of stripping so it makes your skin dry and actually more prone to breakouts if you use it too much.  I use it every other day at the most, and actually just a couple of times a week is good.   I really like using it in the morning because my skin is already clean and then my moisturizer and treatment products will sink in a bit better.

The @ernolaszlonyc cleansing oil is great and more of a gel rather than an oil.  It washes away makeup and dirt but it’s also gentle enough to use in the morning when your skin might not be as dirty.  At night time,  I use it with the bar of black soap and my skin feels really clean but not too dry so I’m sticking with that.  Also, this was a travel-sized duo and it’s gotten over two months of use!

The @obagimedical vitamin c serum is blended with 4% HQ is for morning and it’s helping fade dark spots.  I noticed a difference after a week of using it,  or the @reversa_canada Serum if I need something more hydrating.

I use the @paulaschoice retinol at night with a moisturizer on top if I’m not using the Neutrogena mask.  I love retinol because it seriously exfoliates the skin and quickly, but I find that I can’t use this every day either.

Aside from the new @drlancerrx stuff, I’ve been using this combo for about a month and I’m seeing a difference.

What do you think?  I love products with a high percentage of active ingredients and I’ll always use and buy those over anything else that seems fancy and trendy.

Lise Watier Velvet Matte Foundation Review

I love foundation and wear it daily, but the challenge is always to find something that feels light but covers well and then looks like your own skin.

Lise Watier’s Velvet Matte foundation comes in a beautiful glass bottle with a dropper, and gives the most coverage that I’ve ever seen in a liquidy foundation.  Literally one drop can cover even freckles, and you can smooth it out and blend it to get lighter coverage.  This truly is a full coverage foundation, but I love that it’s so liquidy because you can mix it into serum to sheer it out, and layer it alone where you need more coverage. Fingers are the best to apply this foundation because it’s so liquidy, and a tapping motion ensures that you’re not blending it out toomuch and you’re getting the full coverage that you want.

The finish is more of a satin matte than a true drying matte, and like any matte or full coverage foundation, this will accentuate dry spots so you have to moisturize well to actually have it not sink into lines or dryness.

The lasting power of this foundation is great: I think because it’s so pigmented and because you need so little, it seems to really stick to skin.  I powder when I use it and really love a matte finish, but my skin does get glowy after a while.  Truly, I think that’s unavoidable for me.

The foundation comes in 10 colours and they seem to be skin-true, neither too pink or peach, so it’s possible to find a shade for your skin colour.

$44 at LiseWatier.com, Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques, London Drugs, and The Bay.

Maybelline x Gigi Hadid Collection

The Maybelline x Gigi Collection is here, and it is all kinds of awesome. If you have a chance to check it out in stores, then go and have a look in person because the packaging is beautiful. It actually reminds me of the packaging for the KKW products, because everything is in a matte pink tone with holographic lettering on it. The products are pretty standard for Maybelline, with some of them even being the same as what’s offered normally, but just in better packaging. You are paying more for the look of this collection, but the products are actually really good too, so it might be worth it.

I have to say, it sounds basic, but my favourite products from the collection are the fiber mascara and the liquid eyeliner. The mascara is a nice rich black, and the fibers actually make your lashes look thicker. The mascara layers so well but also stays put without any smudging or flaking because it’s the “tubing” kind. That means that you have to just apply water and gentle rub it off with your fingers, instead of washing it off with soap or cleanser. I also love the liquid liner pen that’s in this collection. It’s so smooth, pigmented, and again a nice rich black, and I’ve pretty much mastered doing a cat eye with this. It’s a 0.4mm tip which is pretty much genius and not to stiff or soft, so the line is easy to control. No smudging with this even when I don’t wear a primer.

The other products that are winners in this collection are the lipsticks. In Canada, they’re available in 4 colours: Erin, McCall, Khair, and Lani. They’re matte, so their lasting power is good but they’re not that that pigmented so you can wear even the brighter colors as kind of a stain.  Erin is a deep purplish colour, and Lani is the lightest colour.

I actually love Khair and Lani because they just really go with all skin tones and are bright enough to rev up your look.

The Strobing Liquids that are part of this collection come in gold and pearl tones and they’re easy to dab on your skin to highlight.

The one product that I didn’t have a use for was the tinted primer. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t a tinted primer essentially like a foundation? I get tinted color correctors, that I would put foundation on top of, but why would I use a beige or brown primer and then a foundation? Maybelline suggests we use the primers as contour creams, but the problem is that they’re not really tinted enough to do this. A cream contour works really well when it’s pigmented enough to apply in a small area and blend out like a real shadow. These are too creamy and sheer to really work in that way. They come in 2 colours: light/medium and deep. The light/medium is almost my skin tone so I couldn’t use that to contour, and the deep didn’t really work for me.

The eyeshadow palettes for this collection are so pretty. There’s one with cool tones and one with more warm tones and I reach for whichever colours I’m feeling on a particular day. What I love about these palettes is that they’re a combination of matte and shimmer shades, which adds to the versatility of the palettes. The eyeshadows are pigmented and super soft, finely milled, so there’s no fall out and they’re easy to blend.

Check out the entire collection in drugstores.
