Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector

I’ve been a longtime fan of @clinique for my skin, and one of the products that I love is their Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector, which isn’t exactly for making my pores smaller, but more for making them look invisible.

This product isn’t new on the market and I’ve had it forever.

The Clinique Pore Minimizer Instant Perfector is just one of those standbys that I have on hand. It does the same kind of thing that my blotting powder does – take away shine without disturbing the rest of my makeup – but somehow it seems to go on more natural looking. It might be because it’s tinted and it seems to cover up my pores without at all looking powdery on my skin. It comes in three colours: kind of a clear, a pale beige, and a deeper warm beige.

You’d think that I’d just applied another layer of foundation, but that’s definitely not the case either. It just does what it says – perfects. It’s a hot weather must-have.

Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Masque

A mask for those of us who sometimes have troublesome skin.  If you’ve spent too much time in the sun, the cold, the smog or with your exfoliator, then this is for you.We start then, with a mask that’s not necessarily for combination skin but is definitely a mask that’s good for the summer. The Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Masque is a green gel that claims to soothe skin so that it looks its best.

Upon putting this masque on, my skin felt instantly refreshed – and it should since it is a water-based gel. This is an excellent option for those people who have experience sunburn or simply need to calm their skin after spending time in the heat. The gel mask goes on clear and doesn’t really dry out – it stays wet and provides refreshing relief to the skin while providing sheer moisture as well. After using this mask, my skin was super hydrated and ready for moisturizer.

Take it on vacation with you.  Keep it around for emergencies.

It has been around for a really long time and it works.

$64. At Sephora.

Brushes to Use With Your Mineral Makeup

Changes are that if you haven’t tried mineral makeup already, you will in the next year, and that means that if you don’t own some already, you will, and then you’ll wonder how you can put it on properly.

The trick, my friends, lies in the brushes. So, here are the brushes that you could use with your mineral makeup and the effect that you get with them.

I’ll start with a Kabuki brush because it’s the most common and chances are that whatever mineral makeup kit you’re buying, you’ll get one of these brushes free with it. The brush has densely packed natural hairs. Because there are so many hairs in such a small space, you pick up more pigment and can’t play with it as much. This means that you get medium to full coverage when you use this brush. The handle is usually short so that you can sweep it all over your face easily. If you try the makeup on in the store, 9 times out of 10 the makeup artist will use this brush and make your skin look flawless. Once you leave the store, however, you may realize that this is too much for everyday, and if you have dry skin it may look overly powdery. It’s all a matter of taste. A kabuki brush might really work for you too.
Kabuki brushes also come in retractable varieties which seem great for travel but aren’t that great for application. They simply lack the heft and ease of use that regular brushes have.

And then there’s this guy…

Commonly known as a skunk brush or stippling brush. This brush gives medium to medium-light coverage. This is the brush that I actually use to put my mineral makeup on because I like the control that it gives me. My coverage is not too heavy and I can always layer on more if I want to. I would recommend that beginners use this brush to play with their mineral makeup. It’s better to start off with less foundation than with too much. You can also blend nicely with this brush and make sure that it doesn’t look like you’re wearing a mask.

Or you could use a brush that you probably already have and have had for a long time. And that’s a powder brush. Yep, don’t knock this one, because it works too. The rule is that the fluffier and larger the head of the brush, the more lightly it will distribute powder. For this brush more than any other, look for something that is super-soft against your skin. A powder brush will give you light coverage. That is for people who don’t need to wear a lot of foundation but just want something that will make them look finished and put together. I sometimes use this brush to put mineral foundation on top of regular foundation to give it more lasting power. You can also use this one for blending your mineral foundation.

You could also use a foundation brush but this will give you heavy coverage. Yes, that’s what some people want, and so I’m putting it out there. A foundation brush is great if you have problematic areas that you really want to cover.

But what if you have those areas and they’re really small?

Do what I do. Dip a concealer brush into your mineral makeup and put it on the areas that need more coverage – under the eyes, beside the nose, any spots you might have.  I am partial to the Hourglass Large Concealer brush because it’s perfect for under my eyes and my chin, and I use a smaller brush to get into the corners of my face.

Then take your face brush of choice, and use it to put the mineral makeup on the rest of your face. Don’t skip the problem areas – just blend the foundation over them too. This way, you get heavier coverage where you need it and light coverage where you don’t!

Do you change your brushes often?  Do you have any favourites that I need to try?

Chanel No 5 Body Cream

Let’s not lie.  We all love a few luxury beauty products.  As much as it’s thrilling to find out that a drugstore mascara is awesome, a luxe item from the department store can feel like a good investment because you’re going to cherish using it.

Right?

My mother has been waxing poetic about Chanel Number 5 Body Cream for so long and I got it for her, but of course I dip into it while I’m at her vanity.

Number 5 really is a classic fragrance and though I don’t love it, I spritz it on every once in a while hoping that I’ll grow into it. The scent is so sophisticated and floral but kind of cold instead of being warm.  It smells slightly metallic on me but really works on my mom. I can see why my mother loves it so much – she’s a huge fan of floral fragrances and this is the quintessential floral perfume, so if your mother likes florals as well, chances are she’ll like Chanel No. 5.

I’ve also found that a lot of people who are allergic or sensitive to scents, can tolerate this one.  I don’t know why that is – I’ve found that sweeter notes seem to cause more headaches, but that’s just my own anecdotal evidence.

If this is the year of you – then go ahead and find a scent that you really like!

8 Products I Loved in 2017

I love the New Year.  I don’t think so much about what I “accomplished” but more about the memories I made.  More than anything else, my goal last year and this year was to put 100% into home life and most of that doesn’t get documented on social media.  Instead, like a dinner you spend hours making, it gets consumed in a matter of minutes, you feel good, and move on to the next memory.

2017 was the ultimate year of balance for me.  I learned to take care of myself, my family, and my work and giving all them attention made me feel good.  Putting effort into your home or yourself actually affects everything else more positively.

2018?  This will be a time to create community. To volunteer.  To help others.  Can’t wait.

In the mean time, here are my favourites from 2017.

  1. Beautycounter. By far one of my favourite skincare brands because of their approach.  Skincare that’s not bad for you and also looks and feels luxurious.  I love their oil more than anything else.
  2. Kerastase.  So much to love from this hair care line, and switching to it really made my hair grow too.  I fell in love with Aura Botanica because it was more natural, and Discipline Curl because it kept my curly hair hydrated.
  3. Make Up For Ever Translucent Powder.  This was my fav.  Proof is that I hit pan on it and just kept on going.
  4. Laneige.  From sheet masks to my favourite lip balm, this brand has all the things anyone needs to keep their skin super hydrated.5. Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Nude Fresh Water foundation.  I loved this and recommended it to everyone who asked me about foundation.  Finally, makeup that lasts and lasts but looks natural too. Also, this was one of my most liked images on Instagram so I think that’s saying something.  Everytime I mentioned Double Wear, I got a knowing nod from makeup enthusiasts, which is saying something!
    6. Retinol.  So many brands and they’re all so good.  If you want to see your skin change rapidly and for good, then you need to add a retinol to your routine.  No, you’re not too young (the answer to the question I get asked most often).  It fights acne, takes care of fine lines, and even makes skin more hydrated thanks to improved turnover which can help get rid of dry skin.  It’s not like a glycolic which can be drying and works quicker too.

7. L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise was my favourite mascara and I’ll keep purchasing it as long as I can find it.

8. I also used this Dior Concealer so much that it finished.  Will repurchase also.  When was the last time you ran out of a concealer???

Givenchy Lunar New Year 2018 Collection

Packaging that makes you say “wow!”

Givenchy’s Lunar New Year 2018 collection has the most beautiful packaging – red with gold blossoms on it.  The lipstick cover is adorned in real printed leather, but the loose powder has a lid of imitation leather.  The Prisme Libre comes in shade #1 ($69) which is a mix of translucent, green, blue, and violet tones to even out redness and dullness and is suitable for all skin tones.

The lipstick is shade #305 ($45) which is a poppy red in a super moisturizing creamy formula.  It lasts a long time and leaves a bit of a stain on the lips when its worn out, which is just the way I like them.

Pick them up at Sephora.ca this January.

Alterna Caviar Infinite Color Hold Collection

Beautiful packaging and the promise that a caviar-enriched formula is better for your hair, Alterna’s shampoos, conditioners, and styling promise that you’ll have better hair thanks to a luxurious formula. I tried the Infinite Color Hold collection which promises to keep hair color fresh for 70 days.  I’m using it, but I’m going over my roots every four weeks anyway, so I’m not sure if this is really keeping my hair from fading.

I will say that the products are extremely moisturizing so they work really well for hair that’s been damaged by too much processing.  I personally found the Vibrancy Serum a little too thick for my fine hair, but I loved the shampoo, conditioner, and the shine spray which I use almost every time I style or straighten my hair.

The shampoo is moisturizing, the conditioner is nice and thick so it actually stays in your hair to help it be moisturized.

You can find Alterna online or at Nordstrom.

Beautycounter’s New Lotion

Beautycounter has oils that I rave about – even though I have oily skin, they work so well for me.  I’ve written about them here and here just for starters.  Now they have a Countermatch line that’s just for skin that doesn’t need oil all the time.  That means that it’s great for everyday because it’s not as heavy as an oil.

The line has a serum ($48), a lotion ($48), eye cream ($39), and a moisture recovery sleeping cream ($55).

I have the Countermatch lotion and it’s incredibly light and smooth.  I would have sworn that it has silicones in it, but it’s actually formulated with silicones or any synthetic polymers.  So the slip in the lotion is thanks to other ingredients.

Here’s the full ingredient list:

Aqua/Water/Eau, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, pentylene glycol, Prunus Domestica (Plum) Seed Extract, Glycerin, C12-16 Alcohols, Squalane, C10-18 Triglycerides, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Palmitic Acid, Olus/Vegetable Oil/Huile végétale, Arginine, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Phytic Acid, Behenyl Alcohol, Xanthan Gum, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Salicylic Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Candelilla Cera/Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax/Cire de candelilla.

Actually the ingredients for every single product is listed on the Beautycounter website, which is another thing that I love about the brand – they are transparent, and they have standards for all the products that they come out with.

The Countermatch lotion is light and satisfying on my skin.  I use it at night after my retinol and sometimes in the morning after my toner.

You can buy Beautycounter online.

Stila Stay All Day Foundation and Concealer

I love me some Stila products.  They actually were the first foundations I bought because they were the only ones that seemed to have shades that looked natural on my skin – they were pricy and only sold at Holt Renfrew at the time, but I kept going back for the tinted moisturizers and wore them for years!

Now there’s the Stay All Day Foundation – which I’ve reviewed before – and now it’s packaged with its own concealer.  The foundation used to be with a spatula many years ago, and also used to be sold with the matching concealer, but last year Stila introduced the airless pump, which is genius, and now it’s repackaged again to include a concealer with the airless pump for the foundation.

I got the shade Honey, which is probably a touch too light for me, but it worked once I added the contour and bronzer.

The concealer, you guys, is amazing.  You can get it to be super full coverage and it just lasts and lasts.  It’s also exactly the same colour as the foundation so you can put on the foundation, and then dot on the concealer just where you need it and the colour just blends into the foundation.  Seriously, it’s the most genius thing ever, and I wish more foundations were sold this way.

I will say that the concealer pot gets a bit messy – check out my picture – but that’s ok.

If you normally use foundation and concealer, or if you need a concealer to add a bit more coverage just in certain areas, then I highly recommend this duo.  The lasting power is amazing too.

Available at Sephora and Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques for $52.

DiorSkin Forever Review

Diorskin Forever Extreme Wear Flawless Makeup came out in 2007, and I’ve gone back to it for a bit because I wanted something that was more coverage and would last a long time for some holiday parties.

The foundation is amazing and it would be awesome for NYE.

To begin, it differs from most other long-wearing foundations because its finish isn’t a pure matte. If your problem with other brands of long-wearing foundation was that they left your skin too unnaturally matte then try this one because that is definitely not the case here. The foundation sort of sticks to the skin as you apply it, and sets to a slightly dewy but stay-put finish.

This foundation stays put to the point that it won’t rub off on your hands if you touch your face or won’t wear away.  It would be the perfect foundation to wear for a very long day.  When I tried it, even if I chanced to rub my forehead or rest my chin against my cheek, no foundation came off on my hands. That in itself was almost a miracle. I do have to note that this foundation is scented but the scent faded a couple of minutes after I applied my foundation, and in any case it was quite pleasant to begin with.

What makes it work is that it’s formulated with polymers that kind of coat your skin and set so that it doesn’t rub off, but comes off with makeup remover, or cleanser.

For long days where looking flawless is key, this foundation is going to be my pick. Added bonus: SPF 35, in case you forget the sunscreen.

Find it at your Dior counter. $64.
