Velour Lashes

I love the look of long long lashes, but when you have little kids around you every time you’re in the bathroom, it can get difficult to really focus and do a winged liner or put lashes on properly.  My kids just love watching me get ready, they’re constantly asking questions, and then they dip their little fingers into everything.

Just take a look at my insta and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

But I made time to try on these Velour lashes because they’re so pretty, and omg, they are also so extra.  It literally felt as if I was wearing a toque or something on my lashes, and I could barely blink but then I took this selfie, and wow, do they ever look good.  This is how I WANT my lashes to look, but it’s a look that’s only achievable with falsies and the extra time that I take to put them on is totally worth it if I’m going to be photographed.

Velour lashes is definitely a specialist when it comes to lashes.  They even sell special tweezers to help you position your lashes perfectly and have their own lash glue too.  I used the glue and the tweezers, and at the end of it, I found that I had to use my fingers to really get the perfect positioning.  The tweezers were good for fixing up the lashes at the tips but you don’t get a feel for where they’re really going.

Velour lashes are made in Canada – and you can even design your own lashes if you head to their website.

Check them out at VelourLashes.com.

Fragrance Friday: Quickie Guide to Perfume Terms

Just a little note on perfume terms that you might come across as you research or buy perfumes.  As always, spray a perfume and wear it around so you can see how the scent changes as you wear it.  Many perfume purchases I’ve made on the spot have been ones I’ve regretted because they ended up being too sweet as they wore on my skin.  Try it for a day or two and then buy it if you must.

Concentrations

These are determined by what percentage of aroma the product contains. Without getting into specifics, the strongest is a Perfume Oil, then a Parfum. These will be more expensive than say an Eau de Parfum which is not as strong. An Eau de Toilette is less strong, and an Eau de Cologne is least strong (it only has 2-5% aromatic compounds in it!).

Notes

Most commonly, you see the words top notes, middle notes, and base notes. The top notes are notes that we smell first and have a tendency to fade within an hour or so. These notes are usually citrus-y in nature and because citrus notes fade fast, citrus fragrances fade quicker than others too – something to keep in mind if you’re buying a citrus fragrance.

Middles notes are what you smell after the top note has faded, and the base notes are what’s smelled in the “dry down” of a perfume; that is, when a perfume has been resting on your skin for some time.

This means that a perfume doesn’t always smell the same, and that’s why it’s so important to try it on before you purchase it. You might like it after an hour of wearing it, you might not.

Now, the three kinds of notes together make a “fragrance pyramid” but you might be thinking that you know of a perfume that smells the same all the time. These are linear perfumes. They smell exactly on the skin as they do out of the bottle. If you’re ever going to buy a fragrance for someone (not something I recommend) you should make sure it’s linear. How to make sure it is? Smell it in the bottle, then spray it on a card and on the skin. Do all three smell the same? Still smell the same after a couple of hours? Then chances are that the perfume is linear in nature and will smell the same way on the recipient of the gift.

Families

The Floral family is self-explanatory. Scent makers will either combine a variety of florals (into bouquets) or have single flower dominate the perfume.

Ambers is vanilla combined with woods or florals, while Woods are mostly cedars.

Leather is also a term that gets thrown about, and this does not mean that the perfume really smells like actual leather. In the olden days, leather used to smell bad so they used to scent it with oils to make it smell better. These oils were commonly those that smelled of woods and so these days, a leather perfume is one that smells like wood or incense.

Chypre (with a hard c) are those scents that are more old-world. Think Patchouli or Labdanum and you’ve got a Chypre scent.

Fougere is usually a scent that is quite herby and usually refers to scents for men. Think top notes of citrus blended with base notes of wood and chances are you have a Fougere.

Although those are the traditional fragrance families, these days we also have gourmand fragrances. You know the ones: Pink Sugar, Comptoir Sud Pacifique, etc. These perfumes smell like cakes, bakeries, and the like (foody fragrances).

I could go on and talk about variations and combinations but I think this is a good starting point for a perfume primer. There’s a good chance that you’ve come across these terms before and that you’ll see them again.

Viviscal Does Hair Care

Viviscal is a supplement meant to help your hair grow and be more healthy. I’ve been taking it on and off for a year, and although I didn’t notice a difference at first – I have fine, easily tangled hair that falls out a LOT – I was noticing my hair growth a couple of weeks ago, and noticed that the hair grown in the past year is just healthier-looking. The curl is more defined, less frizzy, and more shiny, as opposed to how I think it was before.

I know this sounds like anecdotal evidence and nothing concrete – it doesn’t seem to me that my hair is growing faster or better, I still have to colour it every 3-4 weeks to keep up with the greys. But I haven’t changed anything else. I try not to heat style it too much and let it air-dry as often as possible, and I’ve been doing that for years. It may not make for the cutest hair styles, but it keeps my normally dry hair very healthy.

Anyway, Viviscal has now entered the haircare market with a shampoo, conditioner, and serum, all of which are formulated with the same ingredients as the supplements: biotin, keratin, and zinc. There’s not a lot of evidence that applying these ingredients topically is as effective as ingesting them, but the line does promise to make hair look and feel thicker and more dense.

After using everything, I can see why. The shampoo is clear and lathers a lot – it really gets the gunk out of your hair and leaves it feeling nice and clean, which means that it’ll look more full because it won’t be weighed down. The conditioner is moisturizing but also light, and the Elixer is a serum that’s maybe one of the lightest ones I’ve ever used. I like it and it leaves my hair frizz-free without weighing it down, which, again, would leave my hair looking and feeling full.

If you’re looking for a line of products that can really volumize your hair, you should try this because it really does work.

$19.99 each for shampoo and conditioner, $29.99 for the Elixer.

Available at Shoppers Drug Mart & Jean Coutu.

Make Up For Ever Artist Face Colour Palettes

If you’ve ever wished that you could create your own face palette, with your own choice of blush/bronzer/contour/highlight/setting powder, then Make Up For Ever has the solution for you. The brand introduced their Artist Face Colour this fall and it has all the options along with palettes of singles, doubles, or trios.

You can build a palette with contour/highlight/blush, or setting powder in different shades, or even just your favourite blush and highlighter like I did.

Check out my palette – I got the highlighter in H-106, and the blush in B-206. As you can see, the highlighter is very shimmery and the blush is totally matte. I like matte blushes because I feel that they look more natural, and I gave myself the option of adding shimmer with the highlight.

I do think that this highlighter is too shimmery for me – it doesn’t look like a natural glow on me, even from afar, and it’s so shimmery that I could use it as an eyeshadow – and I do! It’s just pigmented enough and it has the right amount of shimmer.

I chose to get a blush and highlighter together because I didn’t have a go-to blush that I loved and I already had a good contour powder and a setting powder. I love the blush colour that I have. It’s definitely a peachy-pink that comes up true on my skin.

The powders are very finely milled which means that they go on smoothly and blend nicely too. I love the quality of Make Up For Ever’s powders and the Banana pressed setting powder I got in the summer has been used so much that it’s almost hit pan – I rarely use powders that much, but this one was just so good and left my face feeling so smooth that I keep turning to it.

The single palette is $29 and comes with your choice of a colour, the double is $44 and comes with 2 colours, and the triplet is $58 and comes with three colours.

Available at Sephora.

The Staples: Clinique Mild Clarifying Lotion

This @clinique Clarifying Lotion has long been a staple in my skincare routine.  It is the key to making my skin as smooth as it is.  And it used to be called Mild Clarifying Lotion but now it’s called Clarifying Lotion 1.0, and Clinique says that it’s mild enough to use twice a day.

Clinique Clarifying Lotion is amazing – I use the 1.0 because I don’t like putting alcohol on my face since it stings and then dries my face out. If you find that toners usually sting your skin or dry it out, then maybe this one is for you.

It mattifies the skin, and has salicylic acid in at the perfect pH (3.5, in this case) so that it actually works. It prevents pores from clogging by making sure that your dead skin cells are eliminated. Overall, it gives you smoother and brighter skin. It is a must for all skin types.

Try it this year and I am sure that you will notice a difference in your skin, especially if you’ve been having problems with it. It’s also not super-expensive, or very hard to find (every department store has a Clinique counter), and with a bonus system, there’s no reason not to get this. I hope it helps!

$30 for a large 400ml bottle.

Kids’ Birthdays Need Wipes

Honestly, I don’t like my kids touching my makeup and they’re not even allowed to wear nail polish. I’m not against them having fun, but somethings are just for Mommy.

But the one thing that I do share with them is makeup removing wipes, simply because they make cleanup so easy – especially when you’ve been to a birthday party where face painting is the main attraction. Does anyone else have a kid who gets their face painted and then wants to get rid of the design right when they get in the door?

That’s when wipes come in really handy, because they make quick work without any painful soap… so less crying.

Right now, Vichy’s Purete Thermale Makeup Removing Wipes are my favourite because they’re soaked in Micellar water which conditions and hydrates the skin as you’re taking the makeup off. They feel really wet going on, and your skin stays wet after you’re done taking off your makeup – and that’s the moisture from the micellar water going into your skin. Not at all a bad thing.

$14.95 online or where Vichy products are sold.

Drugstore vs. Department Store Loose Powder

I get asked a LOT about good drugstore products, and I have to say that I recommend drugstore products as much as I recommend department store products. Many times, a drugstore brand has the money to research new technologies and sometimes, one large company owns both drugstore and department store brands.

Here are two pictures of loose powder – the first is a department store brand, and the second is a drugstore brand. It really doesn’t matter what the brands are. Take a look at the pictures.

See how the first powder is so fine that it really does look like powder? The second powder is kind of clumpy and has chunked together.
When you’re choosing a loose powder for yourself, you should be looking for something that’s fine like the first one. This will ensure that you don’t get any streaks or uneven patches of powder on your face. I’m sure that you can get good powders at the drugstore, but make sure you’re getting one that’s soft and fine, and you’ll be able to tell through the packaging.

Now, truth be told, I’m actually not even using a loose powder these days, I’m using a pressed powder.  You get more bang for your buck when you use a loose powder, but I like the convenience of a pressed version and that it’s a little bit less mess.  I’ve hit pan on my favourite.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Eyeshadow Base Review

@EsteeLauder Double Wear foundation is definitely having a moment… again.  I’ve run into so many people who are loving it or are thinking of trying it, and I recommend it because I’m wearing the new Fresh Water version these days!

Back when Estee Lauder Double Wear products were released, I was completely taken in by their powder foundation. It stayed on and absorbed oil so well – plus I found a perfect match for my skin.

The Double Wear Foundation line so blew me away that at the time I didn’t even notice that the line also included an eyeshadow base!
I tried, I liked. Now, I want to say that this neutral-coloured cream turns into a powder, but it doesn’t. It does dry but stays a little creamy on the skin. Nevertheless, I was able to blend eyeshadow on top pretty easily and I did notice that it “stuck” more than usual. The colours showed up as more vibrant and the colour of the primer didn’t affect them at all (though the primer was nearly colourless on me).

All in all, this base isn’t as “strong” as my Urban Decay Primer Potion but it’s not as drying either. If I have a day in doors with the air conditioning on, this base is perfect. My eyeshadow lasts and lasts with minimal creasing.

This is available at all Estee Lauder counters. $24.

Urban Decay Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss

It’s been a while since I covered anything from @UrbanDecay but now that I need something more moisturizing, I’m all about this Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss.  I mean, look at the packaging – uber lux, and a hefty tube that lets you see the colour inside.

This is Beso, a deep pink that’s glossy and fresh.  It looks pretty because it has warm pink pearl in it that makes it look so pretty.

Actually, the glosses are so easy to wear.  They’re light on the pigment and moisturize without being heavy or sticky.  That means that you’re going to have to keep reapplying them but that’s ok.

Available at Sephora for $26.

Dolce and Gabbana Relaunches The One

Dolce and Gabbana came out with The One Eau de Parfum maybe 10 years ago and since then they’ve also come out with lots of flankers, a version for men, and now… a new spokesperson: Emilia Clarke, and a reason to relaunch the scent in an eau de toilette version which is more powdery and fresh than the original.

On first sniff, it seems just as relevant today as it was back in 2006. It’s a fruity floral with notes of bergamot, lychee, Madonna lily, vetiver, musk, amber, vanilla. The drydown of Vetiver keeps everything light and fresh while the amber and vanilla introduce a sweet yet earthier quality to the scent. The perfume is seasonless and seems to wear just as well through the hot and cold months. It’s super feminine and kind of smells classic.

The bottle is a taller one than the original Eau de Parfum version, and rightly so, because eaus are usually more liberally spritzed since they’re lighter and not as concentrated.

100ml: $122
50ml: $95

Available at Hudson’s Bay, Shoppers Drug Mart, Sephora, Murale, Jean Coutu and London Drugs.
