Summer’s Lightest Body Moisturizer from Deciem

Deciem is a brand known for interesting and effective skincare.  Their products are labelled according to active ingredients, and their packaging is clean and simple. There’s a sense of transparency in the brand that makes me want to try everything they offer.

This summer, I’m using the lightest moisturizer that’s on offer: it’s the Chemistry Brand Hyaluronic Body Mist.  Made up of a blend of water and hyaluronic acid, this spray is meant for your body (but I use it on my face too).  You simply mist it on and let it absorb into your skin.  The Hyaluronic Acid can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water and so it’s great for bringing hydration to the skin and keeping it there. The mist also has a glucose component which helps condition skin making it immediately soft.  The hydration is long lasting, and once it’s on, you won’t need anything else on your skin.
Best of all, this body mist has a light lemony scent that is so refreshing but also not overpowering.  You can check out the entire Deciem line online and purchase this online.  Also check out my review of The Ordinary Retinoid serum and a hair serum also by the Deciem brand.
$20.

Rimmel’s New Shake it Fresh Mascara

I love layering mascara, and the perfect one will layer without getting clumpy.  That’s what’s great about Rimmel’s new Shake it Fresh Mascara.  It comes in a tube with a weight inside, so that when you shake the container, the weight goes through the mascara and mixes it up.

Now, the mascara is pretty liquidy, more viscous than your average mascara, and that’s what makes it shake up so well.  It takes a little longer to dry on your lashes, but it does a great job of really separating all the lashes.  Every coat is just as fresh as the first.

Pick it up in drugstores and mass merchandisers.  $12.99.

Chi Hot Styling Brush

So I finally got my hands on one of those brushes that heats up so you can comb it through your hair and straighten it at the same time.

I got the Chi Ellipse Titanium Hot Styling Brush.  It’s hot an oval head that heats up all the way around so that you can wrap your hair around the brush and curl it that way if you want.  The display is digital, telling you exactly hot hot the brush is before you start using it.

The brush heats up in a minute or two, which is pretty quick.  I plug it in, get dressed, and by the time I’m done, the brush is heated.  It stays hot as I use it, and it really works.  It gets all the tangles out as it straightens and unlike a traditional straightener, this doesn’t flatten my hair too much, but still straightens it.  It’s kind of like using a hair dryer but easier to use.  If you have pretty straight hair that’s not too curly, then you’ll love this.  If your hair is really curly, then you might want to go over with it with a regular straightener afterwards.

You can get it online for about $110.

Caryl Baker Visage H2O Restore Collection

I don’t know what is up with this time of year, but my skin has been dryer than ever and it seems that very little is helping it so I’m turning to every moisturizer that I can get my hands on.  Caryl Baker Visage’s H2O Restore collection stands out because it uses glycerine and hyaluronic acid to bring moisture to the skin and keep it there.

There are 6 products in the line: a foaming cleanser, toner, mask, eye cream, hydrating gel, and face cream.  All six are awesome in their own way.

The foaming cleanser ($36) foams right out of the tube, so it’s light and not very harsh or drying on your skin.  It could wash away light makeup, but I prefer using it in the morning when I don’t have much on my skin and I want to clean it but not make it too dry.

I love following up with the Hyaluronic Hydrating Toner ($35), and honestly if this was just a mixture of glycerin and water, I probably would have ignored it but because it’s a bit more than that, I tried it on my skin and now it’s got a permanent place on my bathroom counter.  I like it because it provides light hydration so it’s perfect for those days when my skin is a bit oily, but it also adds an extra layer of moisturizer for those days that my skin needs more.  It’s a little thicker in texture than just water, and that’s because it has a high concentration of moisturizing ingredients in it.

I follow up with the Antioxidant cream ($65) because it’s nice and emollient, but dries to a satin matte finish so you can apply makeup on top if you need to.  It’s great for night time as well because it won’t feel sticky or greasy as you go to sleep.  It could also be a great base for hydrating oil if you needed one more layer of moisture on your skin. The cream already has a great mixture of oils in it, in addition to vitamin E and beta carotene to help with free radical damage on the skin.  It has a great mixture of ingredients, but it’s also so light once it absorbs into your skin and it lets your skin look and feel like skin.  I’m hooked.

If you have dry skin, then head to your local Caryl Baker Visage location and get a moisturizing facial, and check these products out.

Favourite Products Right Now List

Ohhh it’s been a while since I made a list, so here goes:

For the hair: Shu Uemura Urban Moisture Spray is my go-to these days.  It’s light and not weighing my hair down, so I love that, but it still leaves my curls pretty defined.

Also: Live Clean’s Biotin conditioner is taking the place of my regular shampoo – no more shampooing for me, I just wet my hair, rub this conditioner throughout, rinse it, and my hair actually looks and feels clean enough without any actual scrubbing!  I can do this for a week, and just shampoo when I really need to!

Face: Reversa’s sunscreen is awesome, and my Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint glides on afterwards.  I set with Dermablend’s Setting Powder which makes my skin look so smooth

Contour is this old Gosh palette – it is so good!

Brows are Dior’s Powder Brow Pencil, and blush is Nars Bumpy Ride which came out this spring!

What else? If there’s eyeshadow involved, it’ll be from this Narssicist palette, and then mascara on top.

Bite Beauty has New Lip Pencils!

I wrote about Bite Beauty’s new lip pencils not too long ago.  They are what I reach for most mornings, because I can draw on a precise lip in a creamy pencil and the pigment lasts most of the day.  They’re creamy but matte, which means that they go on but stay put.

Originally, Bite Beauty released these in neutral and nude shades, but they’ve expanded the range with 28 more shades.  The new shades are more vibrant and even deep.  Now the range of lip pencils goes from natural to daring encompassing every trend and season there is.

Check them out at Sephora.  $20.

Laneige Mini Pore Collection

With the warm weather comes more oily skin for a lot of people, and Laneige’s new Mini Pore collection has come out just in time.  The collection has two products: the Mini Pore Blur Perfector ($33) and the mini pore Waterclay Mask ($42).

The Waterclay mask is made with sea silt, kaolin, glycerine, and bentonite so that it absorbs oil but also hydrates and refreshes your skin.  Because it’s a water-based formula, the mask just glides on and is easy to wash off.  It’s not the stiff sticky clay mask for years before, but one that’s easier and refreshing to use!  A slight amount of peppermint in the formula smells nice but didn’t irritate my skin.  After a hot day in the sun, this mask feels amazing.

The Mini Pore Blur Perfector is a light moisturizer that is meant for controlling oil on the skin and helps prime it for makeup.  It’s not too slippery like a regular primer, and it feels more like a moisturizer on your skin.  It makes skin appear smooth and fresh – I even use it on top of makeup mid-day to help refresh my look and it works perfectly.  I pat it on to my skin and let it dry and the effect isn’t powdery but nice and soft.

I do have oily skin, and I love that these reduce the shine without really drying my skin out.

Laneige is a Korean skincare brand available at Sephora.

They also make the best lip balm.

New Matrix Biolage Aqua-Gel Conditioners

If you have fine straight hair, then you know how easily it can be weighed down by heavy conditioners.  Now, Matrix Biolage has four new conditioners that are made especially for fine hair.  Their Gel consistency means that they don’t feel heavy and although they help detangle wet hair, they also wash out easily and don’t leave a residue in your hair.

There are four kinds: Hydra Source, Smooth Proof, Color Last and Volume Bloom.  The Volume Bloom and Color Last are probably the lightest feeling of the four.  Smooth Proof , and Hydra Source have more slip and are more hydrating and very light.

They go on smoothly and wash away quite clean.  The scent for all four is clean and fresh without being over-powering.

They are also silicone-free, oil-free, and paraben-free.

Pick them up at salons or online for $20 each.

New Nars x Charlotte Gainsburg Hydrating Skin Tint Review

The Nars x Charlotte Gainsburg collection is amazing.  It’s maybe my most favourite Nars collection to date because every piece is designed to be worn in a lived in kind of way which makes this a great collection of products to use in the summer.

Part of the collection is the Hydrating Skin Tint which comes in 4 colours: Fair, Light, Medium, and Medium-Dark.  Thankfully, I’m a medium-toned gal to a T, and so Medium in this tint matches me perfectly.

I love the Velvet Matte Skin Tint (it’s been my foundation every day since I got it last spring), so I was excited to try this too.  It has the same sort of texture as the Velvet Matte Skin Tint but with a glowy finish, instead of a matte one.  Both look just like skin: one like satin-matte skin, and one like glowy moisturized skin.

I have to say, although I love them both, I have to say that the lasting power on these is not great.  They do wear off by the end of the day unless you set them with powder.  That’s not so bad for the matte skin tint, but for the glowy one, it definitely takes way from the glowy look of the skin tint.  I set it if I use it before going out, but if I’m using it on the weekend, I skip the setting part and it just gives me the nicest moisturized skin.

The best part of the Hydrating Skin Tint is that it’s best applied with your finger tips like moisturizer and that means that you can really blend it into your skin to make it look natural.  It has light coverage but enough to make skin look more clear and healthy.  It also photographs really well, which is another plus point for it.

The Hydrating Glow Skin Tint is available online and at Nars counters, and if you’re interested in it, check it out quickly before it sells out, because it’s been selling out so fast.

$45.

AlumierMD Sunscreen

On the radio this morning, a listener called in and said that if you want it to feel like summer, you should just wear sunscreen that smells like that beachy coconut scent so that you feel like it’s hot enough for it, even though it’s not.

This listener obviously isn’t a regular sunscreen wearer, because if they were, they would have known that the latest sunscreens actually don’t smell like anything and that’s partly why they’re so easy to wear.  I mean, yes, Coppertone still exists, but even they have sunscreens that don’t smell like they used to.

Sunscreens have come a long way.  Now there are mineral-based sunscreens and there are chemical-based ones. The problem with the mineral-based sunscreens is that they usually go on quite white on the skin and therefore, aren’t great for the face because they can make you look ghost-like. Chemical-based sunscreens aren’t always good for your body because there are sometimes ingredients that are easily absorbed and can be harmful.

AlumierMD is a new brand of sunscreen available in Canada that is mineral-based and elegantly formulated so that it suits almost any type of skin. There’s no annoying scent, and the formulas go on so smoothly that you can apply makeup on top.  There are a few difference formulas available, and it’s available in a variety of tints too so that you can truly wear it without worrying about it looking obvious.

There’s MoistureMatte (available in 3 colours, SPF 40), Clear Shield (SPF 42), and Sheer Hydration (available in tinted and untinted, SPF 40). I really wanted to like the MoistureMatte, especially because there are a variety of tints available, but the problem was that Sand – the colour right in the middle, which would be the closest to my foundation shade – wears a little on the salmon side, instead of being warm, and so I can’t wear it in place of my foundation.  If anything, I can wear foundation on top of it and the extra layer of coverage makes my skin look extra good. Still, I like to wear a sunscreen that I can apply without thinking too much about blending it out, and so the MoistureMatte isn’t for me.

I really loved the Clear Shield and the Sheer Hydration.  The Clear Shield really does go on almost clear, and there’s a tiny bit of whiteness that I can see, but I apply sunscreen all the way down my neck too, so it wasn’t too noticeable.  It has a satin finish and doesn’t feel greasy but it’s not super dry either.

Sheer Hyration in the tinted and untinted formula is awesome too.  It is slightly hydrating but not so much that it feels greasy.  I apply foundation and powder on top and my makeup seems to last the whole day, so I was happy with this sunscreen too.

If you’re looking for a line of elegantly-formulated sunscreens, check out AlumierMD.

You can purchase the sunscreen through skincare professionals – go online to find one near you.
