Beautycounter Lip Balm Set

Beautycounter is the brand that should be your go-to when you’re trying to find a gift for someone who likes natural yet luxurious things.  Their products are made with what they call “safe” ingredients.  They’re suitable for even the most sensitive skins.

One of my favourite gifts from them is a lip balm set called the Kiss Kiss Gift Set.  It contains a peppermint Lip Conditioner and a rose-scented Lip Conditioner.  If you’ve ever tried the famous Smith’s Rosebud Salve, or the By Terry Rose Lip balm, this is very similar but more natural (whereas the Smith’s and By Terry were both petroleum-based).

The gift set comes packaged in a beautiful red box.

The ingredients for the Peppermint Lip Conditioner are:

Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Cera Alba/Beeswax/Cire d’abeille, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Olus/Vegetable Oil/Huile végétale, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter,Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Candelilla Cera/Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax/Cire de candelilla, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Lanolin, Tocopherol, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil. (*Organic/Biologique)

img_6277

The ingredients for the Rose Conditioner aren’t listed on the site but they feel more-or-less the same with the main difference being in the scent.

I’m pleased that the peppermint Lip Conditioner doesn’t burn my lips (they’re not super sensitive, but still), but it does have a slight peppermint taste.

Best of all, the gift set is $52. Available online.

New Bare Escentuals Gen Nude Collection

bare-escentuals-gen-nude-collectionNude colour lipsticks are notoriously difficult to find, which is why when you find a good one, it’s essential to hang on to it and buy all the backups you can.  It also explains why so many people like to collect nude colour lippies – they might all seem the same, but a slight change in shimmer or texture, a hint of brown or less, can make all the difference in how nude a lipstick actually is.

If you’re of the more do-it-yourself nature, you may have tried using a concealer or a foundation as a nude lip (I’ve always seen that as a big fail, because my nude lippies don’t need to be the same colour as my skin), or maybe you’ve tried making your own by blending bits of lipstick into lipbalm?

In any case, it’s way easier to just really hunt for a colour that works for you and try lots of different brands until you find something.  My secret is that drugstore lippies are often just as good as ones you can find at Sephora, and they let you play with colour without spending a fortune.

bare-minerals-gen-nudeIn any case, if you can relate to what I’ve just said, then you should check out Bare Minerals new Gen Nude collection.  The collection focusses on just nude lip products available in a variety of finishes and colours.  Yes, there’s finally a line of just nude lip colours, and there’s something in the collection for everyone!  Whether you prefer having a more brown nude or a more pink one, maybe your nude needs to be super light or super dark, maybe you want a nude gloss that can help you work the nude lips on the regular, there’s something out there for you.

First, there’s the Gen Nude Radiant Lipstick ($25), which is a medium-coverage buttery lipstick that feels super soft and moisturizing on the lips.

There’s also a Gen Nude Buttercream Lipgloss ($23) which is a cushiony smooth gloss that still has a good amount of pigment in it to help you achieve the perfect nude lip.

There’s also a Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lipcolour ($23) for those of you who prefer that your lipcolour lasts through your morning coffee.  There’s no matte lipstick in the collection, but I’m finding that the Liquid Lipcolour is actually easier to apply than a lipstick.  Although the finish is matte, the colours have some shimmer in them so your lips don’t look totally flat.  The finish is lightweight instead of being tacky and this feels like nothing on the lips.  It’s truly a silky smooth finish that looks amazing and lasts a long time.  I have XYZ which is described as a cinnamon beige, which is pretty accurate.  It wears as a beige on my lips even though it looks slightly pink in the tube, so go by the descriptions on the Bare Minerals website – they are accurate as to how the colour will appear on the lips!

There’s also a Gen Nude Under Over Lipliner ($20) which is perfect for using around or under any of the products so that they last longer.

One of the problems that I always have with nude lipsticks is that they always go on lighter than I think they will and then my lips look dead – I literally look ill.  So I stick to the darker nude colours and I’m happier with those because they still look like my more deeply pigmented lips.  I’d suggest that for you too so that you end up with a finish that’s more natural-looking.

Check out the entire collection at Sephora stores.

Rocky Mountain Soap Company Transformative Cleansing Oil

People that love the Rocky Mountain Soap Company’s face care products love the Transformative Cleansing Oil.  It will transform your skin, is what I kept on hearing. img_3240

After using it, I’m not so sure.

I love the ingredient list for this oil:

Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil*, Arnica Montana FlowerExtract*, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Oil, Citrus Aurantium Amara (Neroli) Flower Oil, Tanacetum Annuum (Blue Tansy) Flower Oil, Rosa Damascena (Rose) Flower Oil, Matricaria Recutita (German Chamomile) Flower Extract, Santalum Spicatum (Sandalwood) Wood Oil, Cymbopogon Martinii var. Motia (Palmarosa) Leaf Oil, Tocopherol. 96% Organic

It’s all natural oils, and no sulfates, phthalates, just a pure blend of oils.   I will say that it smells amazing – the rose oil with the freshness of chamomile and woodiness of the sandalwood oil is a great blend – I would buy the perfume!

My issue, however, is that this oil doesn’t emulsify with water.  I actually love a good oil cleanse – oil does dissolve oils, and cleansing with an oil is fabulous for those of us with oily skin because it will leave your skin more clear without stripping it.  But an oil-based cleanser should wash away clean, or mostly clean, and this one doesn’t.  RMSC suggests misting toner on to a cotton pad, and wiping your face repeatedly until all the oil is gone.  I prefer taking a warm wet washcloth and gently wiping the oil off my face – and lots of makeup goes with it, but then I follow up with a traditional foaming cleanser so that my skin is free of any oil-residues and residual makeup.

After using this for a few times, I didn’t hate this cleanser, but it’s not my choice as an oil cleanser.  It’s pretty similar to using a cold-cream as a cleanser, and not many people do that any more.

You can pick this up for $41 at Rocky Mountain Soap company locations and online.

Rodial Instaglam Compact Powders

fullsizerenderTake a look at these two new Rodial compacts.  The lighter one is the Banana Powder and the Darker one is the Contour powder.  Both are finely milled with absolutely no shimmer.  They go on soft and smooth, blend like a dream and are perfect for highlighting and contouring. The packaging is also super luxe.  These heavy compacts have a leather-looking top, and a nicely sized mirror inside.  No detail is spared over these compacts and the formula inside pretty much matches the high-end compact.   img_3040

I tried to use the Banana powder under my eyes and through the middle of my face, but I’m finding that it’s actually too light for my skin.  It makes me look slightly washed out and doesn’t photograph well on me.  It would be better suited to someone with a medium/light skin tone and I’m medium-dark.  Actually, I’m finding that my favourite way to highlight under my eyes is with a pen concealer that helps cover and is still creamy.  Powders just look ashy on me and this banana-colour powder is no exception.  It’s light and has a wonderful texture and I’d love it in another colour.  Maybe a creamy beige for me.

I had better luck with the Contouring Powder which also comes in a regular (or original) version (the one pictured is the dark).  This contouring powder (and its sister) is absolutely the perfect colour, with no orange tones.  It’s not a bronzer, it’s a contour, so it mimics a shadow effect on the face with a touch of grey blended into its colour formula.  Like the banana powder, it goes on soft and smooth and is finely milled but tightly packed so that there’s no wastage when you dip your brush into it.  I use it with my Nars contour brush, but a smaller brush would be just as effective. You can also layer it so that you get just the effect you want.  It’s not so dark that it’s hard to use.

Available at Murale and Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques for $75 each.

Nars Velvet Lip Glide Review

nars-velvet-lip-glide-mind-game-gift-setHappy December 1st!  It’s almost the holidays and that makes me so excited.  I am looking forward to resting and relaxing away from the grind of it all, and I hope that you’re going to get to also.

Check out what’s in my coat pocket right now: Nars Velvet Lip Glide in Bound.

img_6307

To be honest, it took me a while to figure out what the Nars Velvet Lip Glides were all about.  I thought that they were supposed to be matte, so I got confused when they didn’t go on matte and neither did they set to a matte finish.

But finally, I got it.  This is a fully pigmented gloss that feels smooth on the lips instead of tacky or sticky like regular lip gloss or lip balm. The range of colours is great: there’s lots of nude shades, reds, and then darker berries.

As with everything else, no matter what the formula, nothing matters until you find a colour that you love: in my case, Bound, which is the perfect soft neutral pink that’s wearable with literally everything.  It’s an apply and go kind of colour that looks so natural.

Here’s a rare but much-needed selfie of me wearing this colour.  Pretty natural and your natural lip colour comes through a bit too.

image-1

The Velvet Glides are not long-lasting or moisturizing, which is their downfall.  They feel comfortable and smooth but I found that I needed to reapply if I ate or drank something and that’s not ideal for a busy day or for situations where there are going to be pictures being taken.

If you want a gloss that’s not a gloss, more matte and more smooth and satiny, then this would be perfect.

img_2807 Also, the picture of Bound in my hand is tiny because it came in a gift set.  The Nars x Sarah Moon Mind Game Velvet Lip Glide Set. It’s $45 and comes with six colours of the Nars Velvet Lip Glide. It’s $59 and perfect if you want to play with some darker colours of the Velvet Lip Glide.  They’re the perfect size to take to parties or events.

The Body Shop Satsuma

Or: “What To Get Someone You Don’t Know Very Well” or also: “A Scent Kids Definitely Like”.

img_3199

Ok, so truth be told, if I walk into a Body Shop location, the Satsuma range might not be what I’m finding appropriate for myself, if you know me, you know that I’m more of a Morrocan Rose kind of person, but I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like the smell of The Body Shop Satsuma range.  It’s completely bright and fresh, and really does smell like fresh mandarin oranges, which happen to be in season right now, so smelling of Satsumas is completely appropriate.

I also love that the products in the range actually have cold-pressed Satsuma oil, as well as other moisturizers, in them, which makes them nourishing on the skin.

Shown above is the Satsuma Premium Gift Set which is only $45.  It also comes in Strawberry, British Rose, coconut, shea butter, fuji green tea, mango, moringa, Wild Argan Oil, and other variations.  Each is $45 and has different highlights from the collections – and for sure includes a body butter.

The Satsuma gift set includes:

This gift set includes:
• Satsuma Shower Gel 250ml
• Satsuma Body Butter 200ml
• Satsuma Body Polish 75ml
• Satsuma Body Mist 100ml
• Satsuma Hand Cream 30ml

Here’s the hand cream.

Plus, this Christmas, specially selected gifts (including this one) will help protect endangered species and restore 1 square metre of rainforest in Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia – you might be picking up a Body Shop gift set anyway, but this is also something that the receiver will feel good about.

Dior Holiday 2016 Splendor Collection Eyeshadow Palettes

Dior’s Holiday 2016 is here, and it’s a supremely glam collection that incorporates lots of great detailing that puts you into the holiday spirit.

My favourite things have to be the eyeshadow palettes.  Below is palette  776 which is a range of purples with a gold accent shade, and a shimmering white highlighting shade.  Although all the colours are shimmering, the deeper two colours in this palette work well as contour colours.  The sequin design is absolutely beautiful and probably one of my favourite Dior holiday designs.  I really like using these shadows wet for a more intense colour payoff.

img_3181

There’s also palette 66 which is greys that have a bronze centre as an accent colour.  I love that there’s a black shade in this palette and it works well in the contour, or used with as an eyeliner colour.

$73 each at TheBay.com, Sephora, and other Dior counters.

Avon Anew AHA Refining Cream

avon-anew-refining-creamI’m happy to report that a good AHA cream doesn’t have to cost a lot, and nor does it have to leave your skin super dry.  My latest find is Avon’s Anew AHA Refining Cream.  It’s available online for $32, and has a super thick, almost greasy texture, but also has glycolic acid in it so that your skin will be noticeably brighter and smoother after using it – even after the first time, but especially after a week or so.

It’s the perfect cream for the winter months – my skin still needs the exfoliation of the glycolic acid, but because it’s a little dryer, I love this thick cream that makes my skin look and feel so hydrated and comfortable.

Pick it up at Avon.ca.

$32.
