Spring Moisturizers for Morning and Night

It’s spring!  Officially!

And if you’re like me, you’re beginning to think of applying sunscreen all over, and not just on your face.

So I’ve decided to keep a sunscreen for all purposes in my purse so that I can apply before I get into the car, or if I get stuck in the sun all of a sudden.  I’ve been loving Caryl Baker Visage’s Papaya Perfecting Daily Moisturizer which has spf 30 in it.  This light cream goes on watery but blends into a moisturizing lotion that feels refreshing on dry skin.  I use it on my face but it’s also great for using on your hands because it gives them that moisturizing feeling but isn’t greasy at all.

At night time, I’m going between my Skinceuticals Retinol 0.5 cream and when that gets to be too much, I’m turning to a more intense moisturizer.  I’m obsessed with The Body Shop’s Oils of Life Intensely Revitalizing Sleeping Cream because it’s such an innovative formula.  Made with glycerine, dimethicone and oils, the cream actually contains Aluminum starch in it which absorbs excess grease so that the cream goes on smoothly and doesn’t feel greasy.  It won’t even look shiny on your skin, and you can apply it and still get the moisturizing effect of the main ingredients in it.

It provides immediate relief to dry skin, but you can layer foundation on to it, or you can go to sleep with it on and wake up with brighter skin.

I love the scent of frankincense in the cream which reminds me of expensive perfume rather than just any old face cream.

Pick it up at The Body Shop for $34.  Mother’s day is coming, and this would be a great gift for mom!

All You Need to Know About Colour Correcting

The power of social media has made it so that certain things that were once the domain of professional makeup artists are actually now available to all of us.

Truth is that if you have had a serious issue with any kind of skin discolouration in the past, you’re already familiar with some sort of colour correcting.  I remember have major redness after a facial 10 years ago, and turning to Clinique Redness Relief Daily Protective Base which had a green tint that make my skin look normal.  I remember being at summer camp and seeing a friend coat her friend in lavender cream to balance out and brighten the sallowness that she was prone to.  After covering up with foundation, you didn’t even know that she had applied colour corrector and her skin looked perfect and actually quite normal – herself but better.

bobbi brown correctorAnd if you have dark circles under your eyes, and head to the Bobbi Brown counter for help, they’ll set you up with a salmon-coloured concealer that will cancel out the blue under your eyes, and make you look much more awake.

So we’re all familiar with this in some way, but now colour correctors are much more mainstream, and if you have any sallowness, redness, dark spots, dullness, or just dark areas of your skin, then you need a colour corrector in your life and it’ll make doing your makeup so much easier because it will take care of any trouble spots before foundation and concealer.

And there’s a huge selection of products that can help you do this.  Firstly, there’s Urban Decay’s new range of Color Correcting Fluids – these look brightly hued but they’re super easy to use and they’re amazing.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Color Correcting FluidThey seem to have the same lovely blendable fluid texture of the Naked Skin Concealer – absolutely one of the best concealers I’ve ever used because it blends into skin so easily and actually looks like skin while covering!  The Color Correcting Fluids ($35) come in a similar tube and blend into your skin – you won’t see the colour, but you’ll be able to see your problem areas disappear.  They come in 5 colours – green, lavender, yellow, peach, and pink.  The peach is a must-have for the under-eye area.  It literally makes you look completely wide awake.  If you suffer from rosacea, then you must get the green, while the yellow is great for brightening up and using as a sort of highlighter.

lancome cushion color correcting primers

I also love Lancome’s Miracle CC Cushion Color Correcting Primer ($45).  Because these are technically primers, they have a dryer finish and are meant to be layered with foundation and concealer, whereas the Urban Decay Fluids have more of a skin-like finish and you may not need any concealer or foundation with them.

The Lancome primers come in four colours: lavender, peach, yellow, and green and I wouldn’t really recommend using any of them all over your whole face because you probably don’t need colour correcting all over.  I do love the cushions, because it’s super easy to tap your finger into the cushion and apply the primer judiciously to where ever you need to!  The peach works well for the eye area, and the yellow and lavender work well down the T-zone to brighten up the skin.  Top with a stippling of foundation and your problem areas are virtually undetectable.  Think of them as taking care of any problems before the foundation goes in to provide actual coverage and even everything out.

Overall, I like the Urban Decay product a little bit better – I love wand applicators and I’m a huge fan of the Naked Skin line which these, of course, fall into.  But I do love the dry finish of the Lancome Cushion Color Correcting Primers and the shade range is great and actually effective.  You need the colours to actually work but not so dark that it looks like you’re wearing eyeshadow on your face.

Check out both products at Sephora stores near you and don’t be scared to try them!

Awesome Sunscreen for Oily Skin

Avon Magix Face PerfectorFor so many years, I just wasn’t into sunscreen because my skin was already oily and I wasn’t going to add more greasiness to it.  Then I found out that adding moisture to your skin can actually reduce oiliness, so I went for moisturizers that had spf in them as a daily defense.  Now, I’m on the facial oil bandwagon, so finding a sunscreen that doesn’t leave me too dewy is high on my list of must-haves.

This season, you’re going to notice that there are a lot new matte sunscreens on the market thanks to some new technology in the works, and my first find has been Avon’s MagiX Face Perfector.  It’s a primer that I honestly only even tried because it has SPF 20 in it and I was down to the last of my sunscreen.  I figured I’d try it out and see how it was, and I’ve been blown away.

This is labelled as a “gel” on the tube, but it actually comes out as a thick mattifying cream that has an incredible soft powdery finish.  There’s not whitish cast, even though it’s white to begin with, and your skin is instantly smooth and poreless just the way it would be after using a smoothing primer.  My skin is totally matte and ready for makeup if I want it.

The best part is that this has SPF 20 in it so you’re doing the work of priming and adding sun protection in one step.  I follow up with my tinted moisturizer (Nars Matte Velvet Skin Tint these days) and call it a day.  The skin tint is pretty light and still wears off as the day goes on, but my skin looks pretty great and I’m happy with that.

Even better: $11 for this little gem and available online or through your local Avon associate.

Nars Tahiti Bronze Collection

Nars Tahiti Bronze CollectionThis month, Nars launched a little capsule collection called Tahiti Bronze.  The collection is inspired by the island of Motu Tane where Francois Nars spends time.  The collection is scented with the classic scent of the Tiare flower found on Tahiti, but also builds on the iconic Laguna bronzer that Nars is known for.

Nars Laguna Bronzer

Truly, if you’re a beauty lover, you’ve bought the Laguna bronzer before, either on its own or as part of a set.  It’s the first product that I ever contoured with and it’s a staple in my makeup stash.  The Laguna Tiare bronzer ($76) part of this collection is larger than ever before, and comes in a beautiful faux wood-grained compact that includes a mini Ita Kabuki brush that makes contouring or adding warmth to the face ever so convenient.  Laguna is a beautiful warm brown with golden shimmer – its unique colour is what makes it so great for contouring or warming up the skin; the colour is natural-looking, never ashy or overly shimmery.  It’s fantastic for adding some dimension to the skin without overdoing it, and the Kabuki brush can be used sideways for easy contouring or flat for blending.

I have a few Laguna bronzers, including one in the original compact, and I’m finding that this one is more powdery than ever before.  Just a little dip in the compact picks up enough powder.  This version of Laguna is also beautifully scented with the scent of Tiare.  The scent dissipates after you apply the powder, but the whiff that you get when you first open the compact is truly luxurious!

Nars Laguna Liquid Bronzer

Also part of the collection is a liquid version of the Laguna bronzer.($52).  The colour is the same warm brown with a bit of golden shimmer but the bronzer is very sheer and easy to use.  It would work well to warm up foundation in the summer time, or to use on your skin in place of regular foundation or tinted moisturizer.  There isn’t much coverage with this liquid bronzer and it functions more like a skin tint.

Monoi Body GlowOf course, the Monoi Body Glow ($80) is part of this collection and it’s a lovely scented dry oil that makes skin shimmer.

There’s also a an untinted version, called the Monoi Body Glow II ($80) which is scented with the Tiare flower, frangipani, and vanilla.  A little bit goes a long way with these oils, and the perfume in them lasts on the skin.

Finally, the piece de resistance is the Monoi Scented Candle ($90) made in Nars’ iconic black.  This candle is housed in a lux glass jar and imparts the beautiful Monoi scent upon burning.  It’s a limited edition piece, and is perfect if you love the Monoi scent in Nars body glow products.

The entire collection is on counters now at all NARS retailers (Sephora, Hudson’s Bay, Holt Renfrew, Nordstrom and Murale) and www.narscosmetics.com.

Creed Royal Mayfair

If you’re looking for a unique perfume, then you need to check this one out: fresh, crisp, damp, almost minty… and did I say fresh?  It’s very very fresh, almost like snow in the woods.  You need to smell it to believe it.

Creed Royal MayfairCreed Royal Mayfair is a unisex scent (thought on the more masculine side) that was launched last year by Creed Perfumes.  The scent was created as an homage to the Duke of Windsor, and is a reissued version of the Windsor scent.

Notes for Royal Mayfair are: gin, lime, and pine.  Middle note is a rose one, but a rose note that’s damp and wet, and not overly floral.  Base notes are: orange, cedar, and eucalyptus.

As you can see from the notes, this is an unusual men’s scent given that there’s rose in the heart of it, and not a bergamot or lemon note to be found.  I really like that this scent doesn’t initially smell like Pinesol like a lot of other men’s scents do.  It smells so clean and fresh that it doesn’t even smell like what we traditionally think of as perfume.  The drydown is very dry and almost musty and the scent has decent sillage for at least the first few hours that its worn.

Royal Mayfair is perfect for those of us who don’t mind cold weather, the rain, walks in forests, and strong mints.

You can find Creed perfumes at Holt Renfrew, Harry Rosen, Saks, Nordstrom, and La Maison Ogilvy.  You can also order it online.

$260 for 1 oz, $385 for 2.5 oz, and $670 for 8.4 oz.

Caryl Baker Visage Spring 2016: Bloom

CBV Papaya Bloom spring 2016It’s been some time since I shopped Caryl Baker makeup, but this spring, I’ve been won over with their Bloom collection.  It has pretty colours for eyes, cheeks, and lips that can be worn together or alone.

Papaya Bloom EyeshadowsI’m especially impressed with the eyeshadow selection.  The colours are vibrant but the powders are so finely milled.  There’s micro-shimmer in some of the colours, like the fine gold that pops up in the sea foam Hydrangea eyeshadow.  I love love love this colour, so much so that it’s my new neutral.  It’s just something different and so unexpected that I’m loving it on the eyes paired with neutral lips.

CBV Hydrangea eyeshadow

Also: lipstick.  Yes, I’m a lipstick girl all the way now, and I’m loving the bright pinks from this collection.  You’ll see that there are a variety of shades for every skin tone, and they’re all in a satin formula that feels comfortable even on dry lips.

papaya bloom lipsticks

That little part that pops up from the lipstick lid?  That says Caryl Baker on it?  That’s a built-in mirror so that your lipstick won’t ever be out of line.

All in all, these pops of colours are ones that I’m already adding into my spring makeup routine.  The textures and formulas make them easy to wear and work with what I already have on rotation.

Check out the entire collection at your local Caryl Baker Visage location starting March 21.

MAC x Caitlyn Jenner

PR_CAITLYN JENNER_RGB 72If there’s one lipstick I’m getting this Spring, it’s going to be the MAC Caitlyn Jenner colour, Finally Free, which launches April 7th.  Described as a Rosy Nude, Caitlyn decided to create this colour so that people would buy it, wear it often, and then buy it again!  As much as I love a good red MAC lip, day to day, more natural colours are more my jam, and I think many people are in the same boat.

100% of the proceeds will go to the MAC Aids Fund Transgender Initiative, which will work to support transgender communities.

Check out an interview MAC did with Caitlyn Jenner here.

Light Hydration for the Spring and Summer

Come spring and summer, I find that my makeup starts sliding off my skin, and so all I’m wearing is a good moisturizer and sunscreen.  If I’m lucky, my sunscreen will have a little bit of coverage in it, but you can’t always win them all, right?

My moisturizer has to be super-light, and so instead of a cream, I turn to gels.Neutrogena Hydro Boost

If gels are more your jam too, you need to check out the Neutrogena Hydro Boost line.  They line has a Gel Cream, and a Gel Cream for extra dry skin, and also an Eye Gel.  All the products are light and fresh, thanks to a water gel formula that contains Hyaluronic Acid, and Glycerine.  Hyaluronic Acid is a great ingredient for moisturizer because it can hold water and so keeps skin supple.

Even the Gel Cream for extra dry skin is light and refreshing when applied and it immediately relieves tight skin, and sinks in without a greasy residue or finish.  It’s light but lasts, and you can top it with your favourite sunscreen or makeup without feeling like you’re wearing too much on your face.

$19.99 – $24.99 each at drug, food, and mass merchandisers.
