Pantene’s New “Air Spray”

Here’s why I need hairspray.  I straighten my hair with a bit of a curl in it at the ends, but using a curling iron, and then I need something that’s going to keep the curl in my hair but not make it crunchy and let it still have movement since I’m leaving it out and not doing an updo.IMG_4392

I sometimes don’t like using hairspray because it has a tendency to make my hair really dry too, but I’ve finally found one that works so well for my hair: It’s Pantene’s Style Series Air Spray Alcohol Free Hairspray. This hairspray is alcohol-free so it’s less drying, but it’s still quick to set in my hair and hold my style.

Pantene has called it Air Spray because it’s the first ever aerosol alcohol-free hairspray – it has no ethanol so it doesn’t smell like alcohol which quickly dissipates in the air when you first spray any hair product. This hairspray actually smells good but it also makes your hair super shiny. There’s a bit of stiffness at first spray, but I find that I can still run my fingers through my hair, and break up the curl and loosen up the style if I need to.

This is available at mass market retailers.

Special Occasion Pampering for Every Day

Amope Pedi Perfect Electronic Nail Care SystemWhen it comes to pampering, I’m definitely of the thinking that you can indulge in it more often if you do it at home, and by yourself.  I love going to the spa, getting my hair done, and relaxing outside of the home, but the truth is that with two kids, there’s not always enough time to get out of the car and drive somewhere.

I’ve always preferred doing my nails myself, anyway.  I find that an at-home manicure just seems to last longer and if it chips I don’t feel bad about the money that I’ve spent on it.

Taking my manicure to the next level is Amopé™ Pedi Perfect ™ Electronic Nail Care System, which helps file and buff nails until they’re smooth and shiny.  Truly, you might not even nail polish after using this kit because after a final buff, your nails will be so shiny that they’ll look as if there’s a top coat on them.

The electronic Nail Care System is battery-powered, so you can use it anywhere and it has two settings (fast or slow) so you can have control over how much you’re filing and buffing your nails.

I still look forward to getting out of the house for a spa treatment, but when I can’t I’ll be using the Amopé™ Pedi Perfect ™ Electronic Nail Care System.

Available at Well.ca, Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws, Superstore, Rexall, and Amazon.ca for about $50.

More Ways to Get Your Hands on Joe Fresh Beauty

You may have read in the business papers that Shoppers Drug Mart was acquired by Loblaw Companies Ltd. some time ago, and if you frequent the two stores on the regular, you may have noticed the slow appearance of PC products in the aisles at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Joe Fresh Lip CremeWell, now makeup lovers can rejoice because Joe Fresh Beauty – typically found at Loblaws and Supercenter stores in Canada – will now be available at Shoppers Drug Mart as well.   The brand brings more than 150 new cosmetics products, all of which are under $18 and make beauty affordable.

Wondering where to start with the brand?

Try the Lip Crèmes, which are super pigmented lip creams that give opaque coverage in just one swipe. They come in vivid colours – Rose, Candy, Fuchsia, Berry, Ruby, Wine – and are like liquid lipsticks from Sephora, except these are just $12.  The Lip Creams are moisturizing and long-wearing and perfect for the cold months.

Check out Joe Fresh Beauty at your local Shoppers Drug Mart – and let me know what caught your eye!

Calgary Has a New Grocery Store and You Need to See It

Yes, I’m writing about a grocery store.  Calgary has a new Loblaws City Market – a gourmet grocery store – and it’s amazing.  It’s so good that you need to check it out for yourself.

I went opening day.  I loved it so much that I went back the next day.  And then I sent my husband.  “I can’t keep talking about it,” I told him, “you need to see it for yourself.”

The City Market is designed to impress.  Walk in and an array of pastries and cakes greet you.

IMG_0078

It’s one thing for a grocery store to beckon you with the scent of freshly baked bread, but this is different.  If you’re in the mood to grab something freshly prepared and then scooch out of the store, you can do that easily.

IMG_0083

In fact, the entire store is so well-planned and unlike anything else in Calgary while being the best of what’s already available.  Well, it is a little like what’s in Calgary – it’s a bit of Calgary’s best grocery and gourmet stores, but in one huge building.

If you’re used to shopping at Superstore here, then you’ll be able to find all the PC products that you love, but if you, like me also head to Planet Organic for special dark chocolate, and then Sunterra for pastries, and Sobeys for the best fruit… well, now I just have to go to the Loblaws City Market and I’ll be set.

IMG_0081

I do have to say that this store has a focus on fresh food.  You’ll find tons of freshly prepared items perfect for meals at home.  There’s freshly-pressed juice (something not available at any of the grocery stores near me, even the fancy new Planet Organic), house-made gelato (something my daughter now insists on if we go there), tons of pizza, whole wheels of cheese, and a coffee bar.  There’s a special area just for Greek desserts (below), and a little kiosk full of different kinds of Italian cookies.

IMG_0077Montreal-style bagels and croissants you can buy individually (and they’re better than Superstore’s too!), as well as smoked salmon at the deli counter so you can get exactly the amount you need.  I also loved the cheese trays assembled on actual boards, as well as the in-store cheese specialist.

IMG_0075

Moreover the store is clean – even considering the tons of people that were in there to check it out this opening weekend.

Will I be back?  For sure.

But I will say that although I loved all the food at the store, I found that packaged products were more expensive than the Superstore close to my house.  Diapers were $2 more a box, and baby food was more pricy too, even though both were marked as being on sale.  The thing I love about Superstore is the deals.  They occasionally have huge skids certain products that are priced to sell quickly.  You can stock up on essentials almost like at Costco, and that won’t be the case for this new Loblaws.

I’ll be back there for my weekly groceries, and especially when I have company coming and need something special.  But I’ll be stocking up on home essentials somewhere else.

Go see it for yourself.

Winter Hydration Solved: Neutrogena Deep Moisture Day Cream

If you’ve read about my experience with using Retinol, then you know that I suffered from intensely dry skin for a couple of weeks after I started using it.  My saviour was Neutrogena’s Deep Moisture Day Cream which is perfect to use if you’re exfoliating because it also has SPF 20 in it.

neutrogena deep moisture day cream spf 20The Deep Moisture Day Cream is made for dry skin.  It has a very emollient feel and finish which completely takes away all dry spots.  If you have flaking skin, this will make it disappear.  Although it feels satiny to the touch, the look is a little greasy which I don’t mind for weekends, but I do powder down before I go out.

The cream is formulated with Glycerine which draws moisture to the skin – the formula is one that is perfect for applying makeup on top of or for mixing with foundation to make your own tinted moisturizer.  It also has shea butter and anti-oxidants in it which help keep skin looking hydrated, and there’s a slight bit of shimmer that helps skin look even more glowing – something that I like.  My skin just looks healthy when I use this cream – but because of the sheen it does also look very well moisturized.

I’ve always had oily skin so this is the first time I’ve used something deeply mositurizing, but it worked so well that it’s worth keeping in my arsenal of skincare products.

Hanae Mori’s Beautiful Packaging for Valentine’s Day

Hanae Mori Butterfly limited edition bottleIf you like keepsakes, then you’ll love the limited edition packaging for Hanae Mori’s Butterfly Parfum.  Just in time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the perfume, it now comes in a beautiful pick lacquered bottle.  I love the bottle: it has major heft but still a touch of whimzy and lightness thanks to the organza butterfly on the bottle.

The scent is also pink.  It’s sweet and feminine with notes of Strawberries, Bilberries, Black Currant, Almonds, and Pralines.

The scent is one that really sets on the skin and lingers.  I found that because it’s a parfum, it’s very strong and has good longevity on skin and clothes.  Over time, I find that the sweetness of it dissipates and lends way to sandalwood and jasmine notes that are still sweet, but not as gourmand-like.  It’s a great scent for someone who likes wearing warm scents.

Pick up the bottle on HanaeMoriParfums.com beginning February 2016 and at Holt Renfrew this March.

Renewing Skin with Dr. Renaud

Exfoliating your skin gently on a regular basis is a skincare habit you should definitely start if you don’t already – especially if you’re noticing signs of aging skin such as small surface wrinkles or age spots or freckles. Starting exfoliating more can help remove those signs, and make your skin look better.

Renaud Peel PadsMy new way to gently exfoliate my skin is by using Dr. Renaud’s new Peel Pads.  These peel pads are made with lactic acid which is a fairly gentle way to exfoliate your skin – if you’ve used glycolic acid in the past and seen some irritation, then these might be a more gentle option.  I love the pre-moistened pads – they’re very convenient and contain a lot of product on each pad.

I didn’t see any actual peeling skin after using these peel pads, however, my skin is very used to exfoliators.

Pick them up at medi-spas (find one near you here).

$69.

Easy Hair Styling: Schwarzkopf OSiS+ Soft Glam Collection

2016 is all about me being kinder to my hair and one of the ways that I’m going to do this is by washing it less, which requires me to use less product in my hair.  That means that more often than not, I want easy hair that lasts and believe it or not, the OSiS+ Soft Glam collection is helping me achieve my goals because it gives me such a gorgeous blow-dry!

The Soft Glam collection of products are perfect if you normally find styling products to be too heavy for your hair.  They are all made to be light, smoothing, and make for touchable hair. Osis Soft Glam

The line comes with a Prepping Spray, Smooth Polish Elixer (a serum), a Strong Hairspray, and a Soft Hold Hairspray.

I am loving the Smooth Polish Elixer which is a serum for your hair.  I apply it on the ends, and it absorbs quickly but leaves my hair look smoother without being weighed down.

The Soft Glam Strong Glossy Hair Spray is also great – especially if you like to put some curves in your hair.  It holds curl but still leaves hair soft and touchable and shiny.  The best part?  My blowout actually lasted 4 days which means less washing and less hair drying.

Available at salons.

New L’Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Vitamino Color A-OX

L'Oreal Vitamino collectionSerie Expert Vitamino Color is the newest range of products from L’Oreal Professionnel, designed especially for colored hair.  The line promises to protect color and repair hair while nourishing, conditioning and boosting shine.  The A-OX in the name signifies the cocktail of antioxidants now in the products that can help protect hair from free radical damage.  The styling products have UV filters to protect hair from excessive sun damage, and keep color looking fresh and vibrant.

I’ll admit that I seem to be going through a phases where I’m a little disenchanted by regular hair care lines.  Hair is dead – so there’s really nothing that can nourish and condition it, but I love the idea of something making it look like it’s nourished and conditioned.  I also think that shampoo seems to be over-rated.  If you have tons of product build-up or really greasy hair, yes, a good shampoo is needed, but more than once or twice a week?  I’m guessing no.

The Vitamino collection comes with a shampoo, two conditioners, a mask, a sulfate-free soft cleanser, a color-corrector for blondes, leave-in conditioner, and a smoothing cream.  Really, it’s a ton of products and even I was a little confused at why there are so many in the lineup.

I’ll start by saying that I found both the shampoo and the sulfate-free soft cleanser incredibly drying.  My hair is already dry.  It’s curly and long, so the ends tend to need extra care, but washing with these two cleansers seemed to make it extra drying.

I was definitely more impressed with the conditioners and the mask in this line.  There’s a Fresh Feel Masque which is actually a very light minty conditioner.  I loved putting this close to the scalp because it felt nice and cool and seemed to help wake me up in the morning.  I also liked the regular conditioner in this line because it gave my hair lots of slip which it needs.  It tends to get quite tangled otherwise.

The Vitamino Color A-OX Masque was the one product that I found to be very unique – it’s a gel mask and so it’s super light on the hair.  The packaging says that it works in just one minute to deeply condition hair.  It’s super light and seems to absorb into your hair almost instantly, making it shinier in the process.

The styling products are lovely – but to be honest, it’s hard to tell them apart from the many smoothing creams and leave-in sprays that I already own.

L’Oreal Professionnel products are available at salons only – if you see the Vitamino collection and if your stylist uses it on you, go for the conditioners and masks.  They’re light enough to let your hair color look more shiny and don’t leave hair weighed down by heavy moisturizers.

If you’d like to find a salon near you, check out the salon locator on their website.
