Sunscreens 2023

Cottage diary 2023.

I found some 10/10 sunscreens and this is your sign to just get the sunscreen with the shimmer. It’s so worth it and it’s at the drugstore.

All of these are clear, light, and you can use them on your face or body. They’re easy to apply and feel like nothing once they’re on.

The Vichy Sport sunscreen is best if you’re going to be more active but I start my day with the shimmery Hawaiian Tropic one for sitting with my coffee and reading. We already love and use the Cerave Ultra-Light Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30 during the rest of the year, so it feels like a no-brainer to bring it along on vacation, and the Neutrogena Invisible Daily Defense lotion is the one that I actually finished over the week. But I have a backup of this one and will be cracking it open. It really is light and INVISIBLE which is key, because if you don’t like the formula then you’re not going to use it. The tube of the lotion is also slim enough to throw into a beach bag or backpack to take with you everywhere.

The verdict on spray sunscreens is that they aren’t great at providing sun protection and you have to rub them in to ensure that coverage is even. I used this Neutrogena one to top up and cool myself down when the sun was too hot on my shoulders.

If you feel that you use sunscreen and still get a burn or tan, it’s because you’re not using enough, not reapplying or you just need to get out of the sun.

Coconut Perfumes In My Collection

Let’s hold on to this summer feeling for a bit.

Longer days…

Shorter sleeves…

Skin soft with sunscreen…

Sand under my feet…

All my worries stashed in an accountant’s box, out of office reply on…

And coconuts… there are always coconuts.

July So here are my perfumes with a coconut note:

Diptyque Do Son (EDT). Creamy coconut at a resort.

Tom Ford Soleil Blanc (edp). Coconut in your drink.

Boss Bottled Pacific. The blue perfume but with a side of coconut. Like a resort that brought in fake sand so you could have a staycation.

Serge Lutens Datura Noir. Bitter almond, coconut, but mostly tuberose. Soon to be in a bell jar and moved just out of reach, but it’s just a fancy lotion from your mom’s bathroom.

Frederic Malle Carnal Flower. Fresh coconut meat but blended with camphor and green tuberose, stems and flower in one.

Summer Skincare Update

The summer of Barbie, claw clips, and no more posting on the feed because it takes too long and stories is the way. Anyway… a skincare post that you can save and refer to when you stock up on skincare.

Garnier launched a new sunscreen. Guess what, the two different bottles have the same ingredients which seems silly. Remember a few years ago when the Roche Posay sunscreen was trending, the formula for the body seemed to be the same as the face one but came in a larger bottle and was cheaper? Why do brands do this to us? Anyway, the sunscreens are great. Light, watery, and they don’t leave a caste on skin, they are totally clear thanks to chemical sun filters.

The finish is a little shiny, and a little moisturizing, but I gave up on matte skin a decade ago, so we are good.

Just remember to apply enough: three fingers worth.

Humanrace was nice enough to send me their body care line and ugh, I like it.  This is the skincare line created by Pharrell with a dermatologist.  It’s interesting, scent-free, which I actually appreciate because then it’s not competing with my perfume and I can use it any time I want.

The charcoal soap has fibers in it to exfoliate your skin, and the soaps are good, but the moisturizer is really good.

It’s fragrance free, and super smooth so it just glides on and absorbs into your skin. It’s not greasy at all. I think anyone would like it.

AND THE PACKAGING. The packaging is accessible, braille on the box and the tub, a lid that’s easy to grasp and screw off.

CurrentBody sent me a radio frequency device which heats up your skin to help promoted collagen building in your skin. I’ve used it 3 times. It does make my skin super hot but have my wrinkles disappeared? No, but also the changes will be incremental and I’ll never be able to tell. Like retinoids. I assume it’s working, the research says it can, and it’s definitely making my skin hot which we know will work to increase collagen production, and it’s better than nothing right now.

If you’re looking for something easy-peasy to add to your skincare routine then check out the Gull and Castle Naturals Hyaluronic acid serum which mixes the ingredient into a light oil that feels hydrating AND nourishing. It saved me from putting on an oil after my regular moisturizer and I’ll use it as the weather gets dryer going into fall. If you have questions, leave them below.

Bvlgari Jasmin Noir

Soft woodsy Bvlgari Jasmin Noir.  A gardenia to open, with a cool wintery jasmine, and then soft cedar that stays close to the skin.  Perfect for summer, like a breeze through an open window.

Diptyque Eau Capitale Perfume Review

June
Diptyque Eau Capitale is a rose patchouli perfume that’s fresh instead of spicy. When in doubt, get the hair mist and spray with abandon. It blends into you, never feeling like it’s wearing you, seeming to heal from the inside out. Wear it when you need to be uplifted.

Olaplex Volumizing Spray

June
It’s the summer of first impressions, and this new @olaplex volumizing blowout spray has left a good one. Not only does it leave your hair shiny and smooth but also, there’s none of the crunchiness that volumizing sprays usually give. It’s also a heat-protectant and has the bond-building technology of Olaplex.

Fun fact, it also seems to keep humidity at bay so your hairstyle, whatever it is, lasts and lasts, but it’s still not crispy or obviously crunchy in any way.

I know what you’re wondering – how’s the scent? Honestly, compared to everything else I use, it’s barely anything, but I’d describe it as a fresh laundry citrus and it fades away. If you like to be in charge of a daily scent, then this is perfect because there’s nothing left by the time you’re done doing your hair.

Acqua di Parma Ambra Perfume Review

June
Who knew that rose and ambergris could be such a heady combination? Ambra from Acqua di Parma is like a fresh wave of cold ocean water, the potpourri in your grandmother’s bathroom, the smell of salt that’s been there for decades, comforting because it’s always been there, but a smell you can’t get used to either, incense from last night, remnants of smoke in the distance, a lighthouse, a beacon. One of my favourite perfumes from my collection, it’s not always easy to wear but it’s easy to love.

Check out the Acqua di Parma perfumes in my collection:

Le Labo Another 13 Perfume Review

June
Le Labo Another 13: when you want to smell like something and nothing.A mix of musks, this is a clean and sweet scent. Sometimes it blends into your skin as a skin scent and sometimes it doesn’t. I got wafts of it during the day and I loved that. Made me think of a cement library. Beautiful in its starkness, not where I want to live. Have you smelled this one? What did it give you?

The Safran Troublant Ice Cream Recipe

June
This is your reminder that it’s Safran Troublant season. Safran Troublant is a happy rose-vanilla scent. I’m still convinced that it’s fashioned after the Persian ice cream, Zafran Bastani, but we won’t ever know for sure. All I know is that the first season I wore this, I knew that it was a flavour combination I wanted to taste, so I made the ice cream. It wasn’t that much of a leap because all these flavours are in Indian deserts already, and Safran Troublant really reminds me of the flavours in ras malai. It’s uncanny, actually, but homemade ras malai isn’t in my wheelhouse of recipes whereas ice cream is.

I’ve dm’d people the recipe here and there, but here it is written out neatly so you can save this post for future reference.

It’s a custard base, so you’re making a custard with all the ingredients EXCEPT for the vanilla and rosewater, which you’re stirring in at the end when the custard is off the heat. Chill your custard and churn as you normally would. Cardamom seeds are optional, but if you choose to add cardamom, get rid of the green shells and grind up the seeds in a mortar and pestle. Pistachios for garnish.

Fenty Beauty Match Stix Color-Adaptive Cheek and Lip Stick

This new Fenty Beauty Match Stix Color-Adaptive Cheek and Lip Stick is part of the new Summatime collection. It’s literally like rubbing a popsicle onto your lips except the formula is smooth and slightly moisturizing. I like it better for my lips and not so much for my cheeks because it is super bright. Very much hot pink. #fentybeauty
