3 Eyewear Trends to Invest in for the Fall

We’re shifting into a new season, and that means new trends and styles to keep up with. Not sure how to accessorize for the fall? We’ve taken the liberty of searching out the most popular styles of eyewear for this season. Here are three eyewear trends you need to invest in:

Fendi sunglasses1. Cat Eye Sunglasses
Cat-eye sunglasses have always been popular, but according to Vogue, there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing them even more this season, as they’ve recently become the highlight of the costumes in the new series, The Astronaut Wives Club. Fendi has just released a range of beautiful, accentuated cat-eye sunglasses that are sure to catch the eye of anyone you pass on the street. With chic colours and refined edges, they’re perfect for adding a pop of colour to an otherwise plain outfit.

2. Go Big or Go Home
Oversized sunglasses remain popular this season, Steven Alan, who recently partnered with shopping aggregator Lyst, released an exclusive line of eyewear that fits this trend, with the Montague pair being the clear winner. However, it shouldn’t be hard to find sunglasses that fit this category – chances are, you already have some lying around. Many designers carry this style nowadays because it’s been so popular for so long.

3. Darker, Thicker Shades
While spring and summer were all about light-hearted fun, with lighter-coloured lenses and frames, fall will be all about the really dark tints on the lenses. However, at the same time, thick and colourful frames will also be big. Carrying the retro theme, sunglasses will have bright, often contrasting colours. If you’re looking for some inspiration, Jonathan Saunders and his range of brightly coloured, thick frames should serve quite nicely.

Many have said that a major trend in fashion this season will be the 1970s style, and this reflects even in the eyewear that we will be seeing. From big, oversized, colourful cat-eye frames to darker lenses, your sunglasses could serve to be the very highlight of your outfits as well.

Women of Influence: Mia Pearson

Women of Influence Mia PearsonI’m a huge fan of the Women of Influence events that take place a few times a year.  It’s a great time to hear from women who are successful in their fields about challenges they’ve faced and how they built their businesses.

If you’re in Toronto on September 15th, you could go see Mia Pearson, Co-founder of North Strategic.

North Strategic is a PR agency, so if you’re in the communications line of work, this is your chance to learn something that could really help you.

Tickets are $55, and available at womenofinfluence.ca.

Best Lipgloss Ever (New Marc Jacobs!)

Marc Jacobs enamoured
Ok, this is the best lipgloss ever – so much so that I want it in a bunch more colours.  It’s the Marc Jacobs Enamored Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer.

As the name suggests, this is meant to impart lots of shine to the lips and it does exactly that.  But the gloss isn’t at all sticky or tacky.  Instead, it has a gel-like formula that coats the lips and just feels slick and moisturizing.  It’s not an oil-based gloss like some moisturizing glosses are, but instead it just sticks to the lips and lasts and lasts.

I’ve never used a gloss like this one before, and it’s amazing how great and unique the formula is.

The gloss even seems to fill in lip lines so that your lips look nice and plump but without the use of any irritating tingling or actual plumping.

The darker colours are definitely more pigmented than the lighter/nude colours – the exception seems to be the colour Moon Glow which is a milky nude pink.

I have 328 Some Girls which is a pretty pink shimmer.  Even the shimmer is subtle and easy to wear – it makes the lips look luscious.

330 Hey You is a pink cherry jelly that’s an easy punch of colour.

$34 each at Sephora and nicer than any lip gloss out there – I wish they had some nude colours that were super pigmented, but I’ll have to wait.

Derma E Skincare for Oily Skin

derma eI’m obsessed with skincare and my new find is a line called Derma E. Their philosophy is that good skincare can be natural and they’ve got some great products to prove it.

I’ve just tried two products from the new Purifying line: the 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask and the Oil-Free Moisturizer.

The charcoal mask is amazing. Charcoal is a trendy ingredient right now because it seems to be great at drawing out impurities in the skin and exfoliating at the same time. It leaves skin brighter and smoother after each use.

The moisturizer is great if you have oily skin because it’s light and almost gel-like. It absorbs into the skin quickly and works well with makeup.

The products are effective and reasonably priced. The mask is about $33 and the moisturizer is $40. You can find them at Well.ca.

New Morroccanoil Dry Shampoo

Moroccanoil Dry ShampooI’m on maternity leave right now, and some days at home with two kids: the one thing I’m not wasting time on?  Doing my hair… and I mean straightening it or blow-drying.  I’m finding that it’s hardly worth the time to go to all that trouble when I’m going to get chalk or play-dough in it the same day, or I’m getting so hot running around that it’s going to get sweaty before the end of the day.

But, my curly hair needs some help to look pretty and gets pretty tangled just a day or two after washing, so it’s actually worth it to spend the time to smooth it out just a bit.

Coming to my aid is the new Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo and I’m using it a lot because it’s tinted and I can quickly spray it into my hair without worrying about it leaving whitish marks in my hair and looking obvious.

Because it’s from Moroccanoil the Dry Shampoo is pretty moisturizing and leave my hair looking pretty shiny instead of dry like some dry shampoos can.

There’s also a version for lighter toned hair.

Available at salons only.

New Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Cream

Clinique Dramatically Different CreamI’m back after a four week vacation and I have to say that I feel rejuvenated.  In four weeks, we’ve come into fall and so I’ve had to change some of my skincare to something more moisturizing.

It’s timely that Clinique has come out with a more moisturizing version of their Dramatically Different Lotion.  The new formula is rich and thick so that it stays on the skin and helps keep moisture in.   It looks and feels almost like a body butter.  Because it absorbs so well, this cream is great under makeup.  Because it is so moisturizing, it does leave a bit of a sheen on skin but this helps keep dry spots hydrated.

Like everything in the Dramatically Different line, this lotion is fragrance free and a pretty basic formula so it’s great for sensitive skin.

Available in 30ml and 50ml sizes; $18 and $32 respectively.

Launching This September: Dior “Fix It” 2-in-1 Prime & Conceal Stick

Dior fix it concealerI’m kind of all about concealer these days and if you’re too tired/busy/lazy to put on a full face of makeup, then a good concealer is all you need.  You can use it to spot conceal blemishes, but I also use it as a kind of foundation, applying bits to the highest points of my face and then quickly blending with my fingers that already have dabs of moisturizer on them.

Right now I can’t get enough of Dior’s new Fix It 2-in-1 Prime and Conceal stick because it’s the perfect product for the application method I described above.  The Prime and Conceal Stick is a concealer and primer in one – the lipstick-like tube has a primer in the core and concealer on the outside.  Applying the stick meshes the two products together giving a super smooth application to the concealer.  Because of the primer, there is no drag and blending is a breeze.  The product also finishes to a natural satin matte finish that stays.

You can even use this to prime the lips for lipstick because the primer fills in lip lines, however it does mute the colour of the lipstick you might then be applying.  It’s great for a nude makeup look, but not so great if you’re using a bright colour.

I just quickly swipe it under my eyes, on my chin, and on my forehead and then blend blend blend and I’m good to go.  The finished look is seamless.  It helps, of course, that because of the primer, the concealer doesn’t end up being full coverage, but this could be a good thing if you want a natural look.

(The un-filtered picture above is colour 002 and 003.)

$36 at Dior counters this fall.

New Awesome Foundation Brush: Sephora Collection Pro Full Coverage Airbrush #53

sephora collection #53 brushYes, it’s time to wax poetic about another fantastic foundation brush: the Sephora Collection Pro Full Coverage Airbrush #53.

Check it out: it’s smaller than a regular foundation brush and much slimmer too, but it turns out that the fan shape is really great for applying foundation to the under-eye area in smooth strokes away from the centre of the face.  It also gets that small area under the nose, and is especially great for getting the part under the chin.

The handle is short which I normally don’t like but this time, it actually makes it easier to get precise application.

This foundation brush is synthetic – which is great because the fibers don’t absorb the foundation and just spread it out on your face instead, and I’m finding that I’ve had to use less foundation than with my Beauty Blender – no surprise there, since the latter is a sponge, but really it’s nice having to use 1 pump of foundation rather than the usual 2… that means my foundation will last twice as long, right?

Pick up the brush for $48 at Sephora.

It’s Here: Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment in Fig

Fresh Sugar FigI’m completely a fan of Fresh’s Lip Treatments – in both solid and gloss form, these are the best lip softeners around, albeit a tad pricy.

Still, I think it’s so timely that this fall they’ve come out with a new shimmery berry hue called Fig.  Berry lips (think plums and wines) are going to be everywhere this fall so start thinking about how you’re going to wear yours.

The deeper colours of the lip treatments are quite pigmented and add colour to the lips but no stain.  These stay solid in the winter, but sadly are quite melty in the summer and are best kept out of the way of children (and I’m speaking from experience here).

Get yours at Sephora. $26.
