Review: MAC’s Lightful C Serum and Tinted Serum

True Story: I don’t normally turn to MAC for skincare.  The brand is known for trendy colour cosmetics, and I love them for that, and my tastes in skincare veer towards brands that can only be purchased at the doctor’s office.Mac Lightful c 2-in-1 tint and serum with radiance booster

But I’ve now discovered this beauty of a product: the Lightful C 2-in-1 Tint and Serum with Radiance Booster.

MAC Lightful C Serum

Take a closer look at the amazing packaging.  The top chamber houses a Vitamin C-containing serum, while the bottom chamber has a tinted serum.  Basically, this is perfect for summer travels because the top is going to be your night treatment, while the bottom is going to be the tinted moisturizer you wear during the day.  It’s so sheer that you’ll forget you have it on, but it’ll give you the dose of skin-brightening optical illusion that just works for long summer days.

The only issue: the Tinted Serum tends to gunk up because it’s quick drying.  Just be wary of this and apply quickly with your fingertips.  Works exceptionally well on top of a sunscreen or moisturizer, the greasier the better, so you can achieve the dewy glowy look all summer long.

Available in 5 colours at MACCosmetics.ca, MAC stores, and The Bay. $72

New From The Body Shop: The Virgin Mojito Line

Virgin MojitoThe smell and taste of mint is the best thing in the summer, and this summer The Body Shop hits the nail on the head with their Virgin Mojito line because it smells exactly like mint from my garden with a touch of zesty lime.

The line offers several ways to incorporate the minty scent into your skincare routine: via a body butter ($20) (of course, super moisturizing and my favourite thing in the world), a body scrub ($22), a body sorbet ($15) (lightly moisturizing and cooling), body splash ($20), or shower gel ($9).

What I love most about all the products is that they smell so clean and fresh, which is exactly what I want in the summer.  The Body Butter is non-greasy and is perfect for all over, while the body scrub is light enough to use every day without really irritating your skin.

Pick up the collection at The Body Shop boutiques or online.

Weightless Bronzer from Givenchy

Givenchy Bonne Mine PowderBronzer is a must-have at this time of year.  I find that these days, with the sun out, I’m reaching for a bronzer more than a blush because it leaves me to wear any shade of lip colour without having to match it to a blush.

These days I’m reaching for the Givenchy Poudre Bonne Mine Healthy Glow Powder (I have shade no. 2 in Douce Croisière – light tan, which is a little on the peach side so it works as a blush or a bronzer). The bronzer is perfect because you can use it to add colour to your face, but it also works as a subtle contour colour.  There’s a slight amount of shimmer to this bronzer, but it works to give the Healthy Glow as the name promises.

Because the bronzer is a “baked gel” it’s not powdery in feel and there’s no fall out from the brush when you apply it.  It blends beautifully on cream or powder but I also love it just on bare skin.  The lasting power is awesome – even on oily skin and I think that’s because this is a gel-powder so it seems to stick to skin and just blend nicely.

This is the perfect powder for achieving a beachy glow this summer.

Pick it up at Sephora for $57.

The Natural Survival Kit Made for the Cottage

Escents Outdoor Survival KitI love the outdoors, but it seems that whenever I’m outside at the lake, there’s always some type of pest to be wary about, and as much as I know that a DEET-containing repellent is best for actual camping, the thought of spraying myself and my kids with the stuff isn’t ideal.

So I’m happy to have discovered Escents’ Outdoor Survival Kit ($40).

Made with Lavender and Lemongrass essential oils, the kit has soap, body mist, body balm, and an Aroma Blend that help repel annoying outdoor bugs. The products are natural and DEET-free, and also free of parabens, pthalates, and mineral oil.

Pick up the kit or purchase the products separately on the Escents website.

Anti-Aging Treatments for the Reluctant Man

botox article
I’m probably not the only woman who listens to her husband complain about looking old and then stubbornly dismiss advice about seeing an aesthetician because, he says, “that’s not something a man does.”

I’ve pointed out that actually plenty of men take care of their skin and get anti-aging treatments. You can tell who they are: the guys fielding compliments for looking fantastic. But like other men, my husband is worried he’ll emerge from treatment looking unnatural, erasing all traces of the lines and wrinkles that give his face character.

Many men face this dilemma. They want to maintain their rugged appearance but don’t want to look haggard or older than they feel. With younger men nipping at their heels at work, men in their 40s and 50s are looking for ways to appear vital without looking fake. That’s why modern, non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures can be so helpful.

I’ve tried to convince my husband with statistics. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons® is one of the organizations that keep track of these things, and its statistics show that the number of men undergoing anti-aging treatments continues to surge. The use of soft tissue fillers among men increased 90% between 2000 and 2013. During that same time frame, the number of men using BOTOX® Cosmetic jumped more than 300%. There’s even a nickname for the procedure — “Brotox.”

BOTOX and fillers are 2 different kinds of injectable treatments that rejuvenate the face. BOTOX works by preventing nerves from sending signals to tiny facial muscles. Macleod Trail Plastic Surgery, which offers BOTOX in Calgary, explains on its website that when “you smile, laugh, frown, or look puzzled, you contract the muscles of your face. Over time, these contractions produce permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin, especially around the eyes and mouth, between the eyebrows, and on the forehead.” BOTOX actually stops those contractions, thereby stopping the wrinkles.

Fillers, on the other hand, help smooth away wrinkles by adding volume and filling the lines in from the inside, just as their name implies. Combining BOTOX and soft tissue fillers is sometimes called a “non-surgical facelift.” It’s not cheap, but for people such as my husband, several hundred dollars sounds much more attractive than the several thousand dollars it costs for surgery.

Injectables aren’t the only options favored by men when it comes to getting a refreshed look.

For example, nearly 1 out of every 5 patients (18%) undergoing microdermabrasion in 2013 was a man, according to the ASPS statistics. Microdermabrasion removes dead skin cells and other impurities that make the skin look dull. It takes only about 30 minutes and costs $150 to $300 per treatment. The results usually last several months. Chemical peels are a similar option that can cost several hundred dollars to more than $1,000, depending on their strength.

For men reluctant to address signs of aging by heading to a plastic surgeon’s office, these medical spa-style treatments offer real results without going under the knife. But to avoid being disappointed, or worse, unhealthy side effects, make sure the med spa practice is directed by a board-certified plastic surgeon who is at the location.

I found just such a practice near our home, and I think I may be winning over my husband. One more young-gun hire at his work or comment from a buddy about how he’s going gray, and I think he’ll be all set for a consultation.

Currently Wearing: Urban Decay Naked On The Run Palette

urban decay naked on the runI first got this palette back in December, and since then I’ve gotten lots of blushes, bronzers, contour palettes and eyeshadow palettes, and so I put this huge palette away in storage.  A week later, I realized that I missed it too much – the colours of eyeshadow and the versatility of the palette was just too good, so I had to pull it out again.

Now, although it takes up a lot of space, I’m keeping the Urban Decay Naked on the Run palette close at hand.

What keeps me coming back is the combo of shimmer-matte-shimmer-matte-shimmer eyeshadows.  I like the medium grey to wear a casual everyday smoky look, that intensifies if I wear the brown in the crease, and use the pencil liner too.  The bright pink blush mixes with the bronzer for a nice natural blush colour, and the bronzer is also great for contouring because it’s light on the shimmer.

It was perfect for traveling with but it’s perfect at home too.

Still available at Sephora for $54.

New Neutrogena Triple Age Repair Moisturizer Day with SPF 25

Neutrogena Triple age RepairIf you have dry skin that needs some TLC during the day, then consider this as an option for moisturizing and applying sun screen in just one step.

I can’t comment on whether the Neutrogena Triple Age Repair Moisturizer really is helping in repairing my skin, but I will say that I love the intense amount of moisturizing it provides, the slight bit of shimmer makes my skin look a lot healthier, and I love that it’s SPF 25 because it means that I can apply it on my neck and hands after I’ve covered my face. It works so well under makeup too and just gives my skin the boost it needs in the morning.

About $25 at drugstores and mass retailers.

Currently Using: SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum

Skinceuticals C E FerulicHere’s another oldie but a goodie.  I first used this serum in 2010, but I didn’t like the scent back then and didn’t stick with it.  Since then, I’ve used it again in 2012 and then in 2013 when I didn’t mind the scent and just needed something that would work, and have been using it on and off since then.  Right now, it’s a mainstay in my skincare routine because it’s so light and perfect for using over the summer.

I love using vitamin C products on my skin because in a short amount of time they can brighten up skin without any dryness or other side effects.  Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that also helps fight damage from free radicals and the sun, and in this serum, it’s paired with Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid, both of which work together to combat the effects of sun damage and protect the skin against further damage.

This serum has 15% vitamin C which is a potent enough amount that you’re going to notice a difference when you use it.  It’s light enough (almost watery) that you can use it morning and night under almost any moisturizer.

The only thing to complain about is the scent – it smells like sesame seed oil which isn’t a smell you want to be rubbing on your face, but the smell doesn’t linger and I definitely don’t have trouble falling asleep because of it.

I’m happy because I know that I’m using something that’s actually going to be effective on my skin and will lighten the effects of sun damage over time.  It’s expensive but it works, and there’s no drugstore product I’ve found that has 15% vitamin C in it.

About $150 at medi-spas and dermatologists office.  For store locator visit www.skinceuticals.com/canada.

NEONEUTRAL: Nars x Christopher Kane Collection for Summer 2015

Nars’ new collection is based around shades of neon and tons of iridescence and believe it or not, when you use it, you’re not actually going to look like a butterfly but more like a harbinger of spring.  This collection has a bit of everything – something disco for the eyes, bright shades for the lips, a neutral blush that’ll add just a hint of colour and one that will add a lot, and a couple of multiples that add texture and colour with their creamy iridescence.  It’s a collection fit for going out – you can afford to be a little more shimmery and sparkly during summer twilight hours and these will help the light catch just so.

Nars Neoneutral

Check out the highlights:

Nars Outer Limits EyeshadowOuter Limits eyeshadow ($29) – it looks almost golden on the eyes but the intense light rose glitter add the “extra” something to the look.

Nars Parallel Universe eyeshadow duo

Parallel Universe Eyeshadow duo ($40) – lilac paired with violet, and both with tons of shimmer.  The Violet has less and the Lilac has hints of green in the glitter making the eyes look like butterfly wings. Both are best applied with the fingertips to really pack on the iridescence.

Nars Starscape BlushStarscape Blush ($35) is neon pink and very pigmented.  Great especially when applied on darker skin tones.

Nars Silent Nude BlushSilent Nude blush ($35) is a soft beige – it didn’t show up on my medium-toned skin, but it’s such a lovely flesh-toned neutral blush.

The collection also includes four gorgeous brightly coloured lip glosses ($31 each) and two shimmery multiples ($46 each) (in light violet and fuschia).

The entire collection is available now at Sephora, Nordstrom, Holt Renfrew, Hudson’s Bay, and Murale.

New The Body Shop Honey Bronze Highlighting Domes

If you haven’t been into The Body Shop to check these out, then here’s a picture…. don’t they look lovely?

The body shop bronze

These are The Body Shop Highlighting Domes, which comes in three new colours this year: bronze, coral, and champagne.  I’m sure you can tell just by looking at them that they’re super shimmery and yes, they work better as highlighters than blushes… or think of the coral and bronze one as highlighting blushes.  I mean, if you wear Nars Orgasm blush then the coral one isn’t really far off from that.

The colour payoff for each of these is really good, and I love to dab them on to my cheeks directly from the dome and then pat in with my fingertips.  I don’t use the champagne one as much, because I find that after using either the coral or the bronze I don’t really need more shimmer but it’s a nice option to wear if you’re not a fan of blush.

A final warning: these are super shimmery and some times glittery, but they look so nice that I do find myself reaching for them as a quick pick-me-up before going out.  They have a velvety finish and great lasting power, so they’re perfect for using during the summer.  These highlighting domes also work best on foundation-free skin which makes them a good option for the summer time, but they do work on skin that has a base on it already but you have to apply with a little more caution.

They’re a great option for easy cottage-going makeup.

$16 at The Body Shop stores now.
