Hermes Equipage Geranium Season

April
Everything’s in bloom so it’s Hermes Equipage Geranium season, an easy pick for today since I was wearing my horsey shirt. Even if you don’t love leather perfumes, Equipage Geranium is an easy wear. It opens with a spicy geranium accord that’s soapy and the leather is lived in, supple. Bright and fresh, I find this easiest to wear when it’s warm outside, but there’s really never a time when it doesn’t fit. It’s also more to my liking than Equipage which can feel a bit more masculine, the leather decidedly darker.

I think that my favourite part of Equipage Geranium is the subtle spices that really make this perfume shine.  There’s a hint of cinnamon or pepper, it could be the subtle effect of myrhh which has these two facets, or it’s some spice used with a light hand.  It does smell exactly like the old-school English Leather soap, and I love a layering combo of that soap with this perfume.

Equipage Geranium is my Monday or Tuesday perfume in the warmer weather, and I love wearing it.  The lasting power is good, and the sillage is moderate and from arm’s length away, this smells clean. I don’t wear this perfume much in the winter, but I do enjoy it when the weather is warmer.  I also like taking it out when I haven’t worn it for a while to see if my impression of it has changed, and it hasn’t.  I still love the scent, and it’s a classic.

Vichy Sunscreen Gets a Makeover

Like all good makeovers, they just improved what’s on the outside and kept the good stuff on the inside.
April
I’ve noticed that the Vichy sunscreens have recently been on sale at my local drugstore and I thought they were just clearing them out for the summer, but it turns out that they’re making room for the bottles with this nice new look. The Vichy Capital Soleil sport sunscreen is maybe my favourite so I’m glad that the formula hasn’t changed. This is a very light and refreshing-feeling sunscreen, and the lotion almost feels like a gel when you apply it. Because it’s water and sweat resistant (it’s illegal to label sunscreens as waterproof in Canada), it works especially well if you’re active and worried about making the sunscreen run into your eyes. I actually prefer to use this sunscreen year round and on my face as well because it goes on so easily, and of course it is clear.

The Ultra-Light Face Lotion is runny and great under makeup, so that’s the one that I use daily, but the sport version is what I go for on the weekend.

If you’re looking for a good niacinamide serum, the B3 serum might be for you, and it has a watery texture that makes it suitable under any type of moisturizer or sunscreen. This serum has B3 (a version of niacinamide), tranexamic acid, and glycolic acid. All three of these ingredients help with repairing the discolouration of skin tone, and the fact that they’re in low concentrations but in one formula means that you get treatment from different angles but hopefully without as much irritation.

As always, I’m here for your sunscreen recommendations, so drop yours below. What’s on your counter right now, and what are you going to get?

L’Oreal Telescopic Lift Mascara Review

This mascara broke the Internet and it is actually great for building volume on your lashes. It does smudge on me but everything does and I do put a lot on, but if that’s what you prefer, this formula and wand really do lend themselves to this type of application. Have you tried it? Tell me what you think.

I actually think that it’s a stellar mascara and I’m continuing to use it.

You can get it online or in stores.

Gucci Guilty Pour Femme edp Perfume Review

April
It’s lilac season, I’ve been outside and running around all day, I’m wearing this soapy lilac concoction called Gucci Guilty Pour Femme (edp). It opens with the smell of candied violets, evolves into a lilac bush, and ends with clean soapy musks that seem to project when mixed with body heat. The effect is somewhat old-world but surprisingly fresh. This is a polished, dressed up, work-safe scent, so ironically, I reach for it when I’m scrubby, running around, hair in a messy bun, eating Chinese take-out from the container, but it hits, and that’s all that counts.

Tom Ford Soleil Blanc edp Perfume Review

April
It was hot today in my wintery little city, and I ran around smelling like a plastic sunscreen bottle thanks to Tom Ford Soleil Blanc. More than once I questioned my own ability to smell because despite spraying heavily, it disappeared too quickly, but as of this moment, the summer dress I wore today is hanging in my closet and not a trace of this EDP remains.

That’s actually a good thing because the last thing you want is for this type of perfume to get heavier and more cloying as you wear it. Instead, it’s a fake coconut scent that only bears an approximation of sweetness instead of actually being sweet. It’s like sniffing Malibu, but not actually tasting it, not having to experience the burn or the headache. If it takes you to the beach then it’s all the warmth and glow but none of the sunburn or sticky sand.

Good times ️🥥🧴

Phlur Somebody Wood Review

April
Phlur Somebody Wood. Warm woods and leather. Like a hug from your lumberjack friend who just got off a motorcycle – hypothetically, I have no such friend. Maybe it’s more like the lumberjack wore a leather jacket and was out for groceries, and you bumped into each other and this was the scent. A nice take on the woodsy notes that have dominated the market, and a solid attempt at warming up that synthetic leather which can come across as too fresh, too new car…

Ultimately, if you liked the old Phlur scents, then you might not love the new ones as they are a change in direction. No longer are they earthy and natural-smelling… now they’re more in line with what you’d find at Byredo but if you liked those, then maybe you’ll like these. The leather, for me, has this quality of entering my nose and getting stuck there, and then I can’t get rid of it, which isn’t what I want from a scent experience, so it’s not for me.

If you’ve smelled this, weigh in.

Fenty Beauty Favourites

Text
Neat or Messy?

As much as I love seeing everyone else’s flatlay, I love a beautiful mess for myself. Swipe to take a peek at my actual makeup drawer and you’ll see Fenty in there. Fenty and I are having a bit of a moment.

I’m a little obsessed with the textures because of how nice they feel. Even the body butter melts in your hands and turns into an oil, leaving skin gleaming. It feels like silk going on, and it stays on.

I’m finding that all the Fenty products have just the most lovely amount of slip so that they lay down well and layer nicely. I’ve talked about the Eaze Drop Skin Tint before and how it goes on kind of matte and stays that way during the day. The cream blush layers nicely on top and has glide. The foaming cleanser – add a bit of water and get the most luscious creamy feel. The lipsticks are so pigmented that a tiny bit gives you full and intense colour.

The lipsticks in the last slide are from the new Fenty Red Extension. A metallic red lipstick case and three new options for a red lip. They’re beauties and actually pretty easy to wear. Every time I wear red lipstick, I wonder why I don’t wear it more but there’s only one of me and so much nice makeup to choose from.

But tell me. Neat or messy, which one is more you?

Kai Perfume Review

If you want it to smell like spring, you need a dab of Kai perfume oil. The sillage is unbelievable because I can smell the scent off my wrists as I type this on my phone. The is a sweet gardenia and I’m immediately back at the summer cottage, about to jump into the lake. It’s not because we have gardenias there but because somehow the scent seems to follow my mother around.

YSL Opium Perfume Review

Perfume for if you have a driver pick you up, fur coat, your bark is worst than your bite, you’re not scared to tell people what’s up. Bright lipstick but only in shades that make your teeth look whiter. Lots of powder, shoes that click clack when you storm down the hall because you have to do something yourself when you want something done right.

Opium edt (the reformulated version from 2009).

Many sprays, reapplied at will.

Watch my video review of this scent.

Aedes de Venustas Iris Nazarena Perfume Review

I believe that what’s meant for us always finds us, and I had my heart set on a decant or sample of Iris Nazarena. One ended up finding me in exchange for some samples if you can believe it. Is this the Iris to end all Irises? It’s an earthy mix of iris, incense and musk, cold, and more masculine, to my nose, maybe because of the mixture of iris and rose that’s in the body of this perfume. Its aloofness leaves me wanting more, I need comfort, not a cold shoulder.
