Nars new Audacious Lipstick

Hello wonderful readers!

If you watched my Favourite Lip Products video  you know that I’ve recently become a fan of lipstick.  It’s just longer wearing and more opaque than lipgloss, and on a perfectly moisturized lip there’s nothing better.

I know I’m not the only one because brands keep launching lipsticks, and a perfect example is Nars new Audacious lipstick collection.  It pays hommage to Francois Nars’ original launch of 12 lipsticks 20 years ago!  Like other famous makeup mavens, such as Bobbi Brown, Nars got into the game with the perfect shades of lipstick.

Nars Audacious Lipstick

The Audacious Lipsticks are so much more though – they come in 40 colours and in a rich creamy matte formula.  The lipstick is super super pigmented and very very long-wearing.  When I swatched a couple of colours on my hands, I actually had a tough time washing it off, and that’s a good thing!  You’ll need actual makeup remover to get these off, not just your usual soap and water.

Also, my daughter got into one of these, and ended up smearing it all over her face and hands…. two days later, I was still finding streaks behind her ears and under her chin… yeesh!

The beauty of a pigmented lipstick is that you need such a tiny amount to cover your lips and so the wear is slower and more even too.  An overly creamy lipstick that doesn’t set will wipe away when you eat and drink, and with this lipstick, the wear will be quite minimal.

Pick them up at Nars counters starting September 1st for $37.

Prada Candy Florale

prada candy floraleForget syrupy sweet candy, this is a fun fragrance on a whole other level.

“Prada’s latest fragrance evolved from the concept of an imaginary flower created especially for Candy.”

Candy being the persona created for this fragrance.

The idea of imaginary flora was used to create Prada Candy Florale.  Think “white Cosmos” with airy and powdery notes, with hints of warmth and honey.

I repeat: this fragrance is not sweet!

The scent is beautiful.  It is a slightly sweet floral that’s light, airy, and long-wearing.  There is a hint of sweetness in the drydown, but it’s wearable and not what you think of when you think of “candy”.

Of course, the packaging cannot be beat.  A tall glass bottle with a girly pink band and golden accents – very reminiscent of the clean lines of a Prada purse.

30 ml for $65 (exclusive to Shoppers Drug Mart and Murale), 50 ml for $85, and 80 ml for $115.

Available September 2014 at Holt Renfrew, Hudson’s Bay, Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart, Murale, Nordstrom, and Ogilvy.

July Favourites Video

HI guys!

Check out my July Favourites video. I focussed on skincare in this one because I did get a comment asking me for some skincare tips. My skin is oily and sometimes acne-prone, so most of the suggestions are for that, but there’s a new line of skincare I tried that has options for different kinds of skin concerns.

I hope you enjoy it!

Nars Revamps Their Nail Polish

…and it is this side of amazing.

nars nail polishesThe new line includes a base coat and top coat, and everything looks shiny and fresh stays on for 5 days without chipping, and all without calling itself a gel nail polish!

Let me say this again: it’s amazing.

The base coat does work to help the nail polish go on smoothly, and stay on without chipping.

The top coat dries quickly and is shiny – it’s pretty close to being my favourite top coat.

The colours are amazing – there are tons of creams to choose from, sparkly top coats, brights, and deep dark colors as well.

Here’s my Nars mani:

I used the base coat, the top coat, two coats of Bad Influence, and one coat of the sparkly Arabesque (which was a pain to remove at the end of the week).

Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Shampoo and Conditioner

Hmmm, I’m trying to think when was the last time I had really good hair and it was 100% due to the shampoo and conditioner I used, and it hasn’t happened in a while.

dove pure care dry oilLike every other person on the Internet, I too have fallen in love with the Dove Pure Care Dry Oil line. I’ve been using the shampoo and conditioner, and wow, do they ever moisturizer. My dry hair is left with a sheen, but more than moisturizing, the shampoo and conditioner together have given my hair some manageability. When it dries, it’s less frizzy, handles nicely and isn’t as dry and tangled.

While I still love using the Oxygen Moisture styling products, the Dry Oil shampoo and conditioner is what I like using in the shower.

The shampoo and conditioner are silicone-free, and I think that has a lot to do with my hair feeling more moisturized and less brittle to the touch. Instead, the line is enriched with African Macadamia Nut oil – it leaves the hair less tangled and healthy-looking.

Pick it up at drugstores and mass merchandisers this summer for $6.97. There’s also a dry oil serum for $11.99.

New Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream

marc jacobs daisy dreamDaisy was one of the first Marc Jacobs fragrances, and I think that it’s the best one. Powdery and Musky notes blend to make a scent that’s fresh, young, fun, and still slightly sophisticated.

Daisy Dream is absolutely a lovely late summer flanker to the original Daisy. It has more pronounced fruity notes such as blackberry, grapefruit, and pear, but you still smell the heart (jasmine, lychee, blue wisteria), and the unchanging drydown (white woods, musks, and coconut water). It’s an amazing scent and perfect for summer and fall.

The bottle design is amazing too, and makes the purchase worth every penny even if you already have Daisy.

It’s a light blue clear glass bottle, with white daisies on it. The three-dimensional daisies add a luxe feel to the bottle, rather than them being painted on. The bottle cap is super pretty as well. Silver with more three-D white and gold plastic flowers.

Foodie Fridays: Making Ice Cream at Home

kitchenaid ice cream makerWhat kind of foodie would I be if I didn’t try making things myself.

Since I have a major sweet tooth, I’ve always wanted an ice cream maker because it means no more trips to the store for premium and super expensive ice cream: I could just make it at home.

Luckily, my sister-in-law got an ice cream maker last summer, and since she hadn’t opened it, I borrowed it from her promising to share my ice cream creations.

Since then, I’ve been churning out a recipe a week, indulging my whole family in some good old fashioned, home churned ice cream.

A word about the machine: I’m using the Ice Cream attachment to the Kitchenaid mixer. I like that I didn’t have to buy a whole new appliance, which would take up storage room. You simply put the whole canister that the ice cream in which the ice cream is churned in your freezer for 15 hours, and then you can churn your own ice cream. If you have a small, packed freezer, you may need to plan ahead so that you actually have enough space in your freezer to put the canister. We have a deep freeze, so we didn’t have this problem – I pretty much just store the canister in there full time so that it’s ready when I am.

On to the recipes.

The first recipe I tried was a plain custard-style vanilla ice cream: you know, egg yolks, milk, sugar, and vanilla.

I didn’t like this: it tasted like frozen custard instead of frozen ice cream.

The second recipe was another fail: peach frozen yogurt. I just put homemade frozen yogurt and peaches in the ice cream maker and went to town. This yielded a result that was too icy and not creamy enough.

The third try was a charm: I used a recipe for Cheesecake ice cream, which I’ll share later. It came out rich, creamy, and so delicious that it’s definitely one that I’ll make again.

A few notes on the Kitchenaid Ice Cream Maker, if you do happen to be in the market for one. It churns lovely ice cream but is a little difficult to use.

You need to turn on the mixer before you put your ice cream mixture in there. If you put the mixture in first, it’s going to immediately stick to the sides (which are frozen metal) and the mixer won’t be able to churn. You may even break the churning attachment, so this is essential! I found it best to put the mixture in a little jug so that it poured easily into the ice cream maker.

Because the canister is quite narrow, it’s quite difficult to get a thicker ice cream mixture in there while the attachment is spinning. You literally have to put it in by little spoonfuls which is really annoying and takes a long time even if you’re making a small batch of ice cream.

The canister situation is also not ideal for mix-ins. Many recipes say to churn the ice cream 3/4 of the way through and then put the mix-ins in and churn some more. If you do this with the Kitchenaid mixer, it’s so narrow that the mix-ins stay on top and don’t get properly churned, so actually, I think it’s better to churn the ice cream until it’s done, and then mix in the mix-ins by hand. The ice cream ends up being soft-serve consistency anyways, so it’s fairly easy to mix by hand.

All said and done, I have nothing to compare this mixer to because it’s the only one that I’ve tried, but if you have an ice cream maker, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I’m making my cheesecake ice cream again soon, so I’ll post the recipe once I’ve taken some pictures!

What are your favourite flavours of ice cream? Do you have any interest in making ice cream at home?

The Best Spray Sunscreen of the Season

kiehl's sun protector sunscreenLeave it to Kiehl’s to one-up the spray sunscreen that you get at the drugstore.

Some spray sunscreens that I’ve tried this season are fine mists that are almost too light – I don’t know if I’ve gotten enough coverage, and a little too often I’ve left spots uncovered and inadvertently gotten burned.

But Kiehl’s Activated Sun Protector Lotion Spray for Body is a spray that’s different.  The formula is more like a runny sunscreen: it’s white, and you can see it as you apply it.  The sunscreen is also oil-free, paraben-free, ultra-lightweight that gives broad spectrum protection.

Made for the body, I feel like it’s light enough for me to use it on my face without another thought.  It’s smooth, gentle, and absorbs easily and leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth.

Many dermatologists feel that people don’t apply enough sunscreen, and not often enough, but this fluid makes sure that you’re applying it evenly and all over, and because it’s an easy-to-apply spray, there’s a good chance that you’ll keep on reapplying it.

The sunscreen also has a blend of Goji Berry, Vitamin E, and Einkorn Wheat to act as antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals that are present in sunlight.

$32 where Kiehl’s is sold, available in SPF 30 and 50.

I Tried It: Fekkai PrX Reparatives 3 Day Transformation

I’m solution oriented, to say the least, and I love beauty prescriptions.  I know I’m not the only one because beauty companies use them as marketing gimmicks all the time: “use this for 6 weeks to see results” and in the case of Fekkai’s PrX 3 Day Transformation treatment, it’s “use it for 3 days to see results.”

Fekkai Reparatives 3 Day TransformationI had to use it – highlighted fine curly hair that spends lots of time in chlorinated water means extra treatment is in order.

So I was eager to try the PrX Reparatives 3 Day Transformation treatment (available at Shoppers Drug Mart for $50 for the system).  “Dull, lifeless hair is transformed in just three uses, helping to leave hair visibly smooth, shiny and soft to the touch.”

Yes, that’s something I needed.

The system is as it seems: three plastic vials of watery “treatment” that you spray into the hair, completely saturating it. I was surprised: I had thought that the treatment would be some sort of oil or serum, but the light system is actually something that all hair types could use because it doesn’t weigh hair down at all. The only problem is that the tiny vials are difficult to spray (my finger kept getting tired) and by the time I was done using an entire vial, my hair was dripping wet with the treatment.

No worries, if you have shorter hair, the instructions do say that you could use half a vial of treatment as long as you’ve applied a good amount to your hair.

I left the treatment in until my next wash and didn’t follow up with any heavier leave-ins – although I was tempted. Usually it’s the heavier leave-ins that really take care of my frizzy hair, but I wanted to see if this treatment really could do the job on its own.

I was not disappointed.

Though this treatment may have lacked a little in the frizz-defying department, it really did make my hair soft and shiny and without any grease. Kind of an anomaly in today’s day and age, where every great new product seems to have special oils in it. Instead of three days, I was actually able to have enough treatment to use for a week, and every time I used it, my hair looked and felt great.

The results though, are not long-lasting. A month after using the treatment, the dryness on the ends is back, showing that you do need to use the treatment regularly for the effects to stay.

I’m okay with that – I’m just happy that it worked at all!
