Post-Stampede Grooming

If you were out and about this weekend in Calgary, you may have noticed that the city is quieter than ever.  Perhaps it’s in juxtaposition to the hubbub that was going on because of Stampede and other local events, as well as the amazing weather that seems to have gone on a vacation of its own.

If you’re touching your skin and it seems dryer, rougher and in need of some TLC, then you need to head over to Skoah for a facial.  Their Stampede facial is back, and it’s just what you need for smoother softer skin, plus it includes a foot and calf massage that will have you leaving there with a spring in your step.

The facial’s only available until July 31st, so call and book yours today.

And stay tuned: Skoah’s also opening in Westhills later this summer, so we’ll keep you posted on that!

Areas to Pay Attention to When You’re Using Self Tanner

Memorize this list!  It’s where you’ll want extra moisturizer before you apply the self tanner, and you’ll really want to rub it in and apply sparingly to these areas:

–       your joints: anywhere you bend.  Pay attention the the inside of elbows, back of knees, knuckles, and neck

–       Areas that are dry: ankles, elbows, knees

–       Palms of your hands – don’t forget to wash with soap after applying self-tanner

After your colour starts coming in, if you see any colour you don’t want – for example: on your palms, or perhaps on your ankles, simply scrub those areas with a wet towel or a salt or sugar scrub.  The colour will gradually come off.

To get an idea of the feel of the collection and to see the colours in real life, watch this short video:

All the colours are available in Shellac and Vinylux formulas.  The Vinylux colours give amazing coverage in one coat, but two coats makes it look professional and last longer.  The top coat is super shiny and maybe the best top coat out there.

The new colours are:

Crimson Sash
Fine Vermilion
Indigo Frock
Locket Love
Plum Paisley
Rose Brocade

Try Vinylux or Shellac at salons near you.  Vinylux is an at-home system so if you like it in salons, you can purchase the polish and top coat for home use.

Why I Fell in Love with Fashion

fashion imageMercedes asked, and I answered…

…it’s in my blood, is what I say to anyone when they ask me why I fell in love with fashion. I come from a very traditional family, where dressing up and look “proper” and “presentable” is the norm and that gave me an appreciation for clothes from an early age.

When I was a baby, my parents relished buying me new clothes and having me look cute. That carried on until I got to the age when I was able to buy and choose my own clothes. While my friends were going to school in Roots sweatpants and sneakers, I was buying the latest pair of jeans and shiny leather shoes. Sweatpants were for the gym, and going out in public meant looking a certain way.

While most teenagers would have rebelled, I relished the opportunity it gave me to buy new clothes. Every day was an opportunity to dress up and look nice.

This, of course, is something that has stayed with me to this day. Even going to sit at a coffee shop means that an outfit must be perfectly planned to look casual but polished. Makeup and nails are a must – a way of life, rather than an indulgence.

Today, my style has very much evolved to include the nicer things in life. Cashmere sweaters, brightly-soled shoes, and pretty bags are staples in my closet, and they’ve been worth the investment. A simple sweater goes easily from fall to winter to spring, pairs well with leggings or jeans, and can be dressed up or down depending on the shoes or jewelry. If the quality is great, then it feels better on, and gets more wear too.

Besides wearing the clothes, the shopping is an experience to be enjoyed. I love finding the best fabrics, in the latest colours, and in styles that are trendy but will last. A classic never gets old, but it’s important to buy things you truly love.

As I help others figure out what they should wear, a big part of it is helping them embrace their own style and work with what they already have in their closet, while adding quality basics, and eye-catching embellishments. When you look good, you feel good, and developing an effortlessly chic style is an evolution and journey. The right piece can make you look and feel glamorous, powerful, or respected right when you put it on, and once you know what that feels like, there’s no going back.

Benefit They’re Real! Push-Up Eyeliner

Benefit They're RealThis eyeliner is truly groundbreaking – you have to see it to believe it.

I adore Benefit cosmetics. Their products are always ground-breaking and unique.

Benefit’s They’re Real Push Eyeliner is amazing because it gives you the lovely fluidity of a gel eyeliner, but in a convenient pen formula.

The tip is a very fine silicone dispenser that lets out a smidge of gel eyeliner at the twist of the base. Because the dispenser is made of silicone, it’s bendy and flexible and lets you line your lids easily.

Thankfully, there’s no eyeliner brush involved in this situation, so you don’t have to wash your brush all the time to get a nice perfect line every day. The super thin brush also makes it really easy to get into the lash line for tight-lining, and that’s where the push-up name comes in.

There’s also a They’re Real! Remover, which is totally needed, because this liner really does stay on. I found that it doesn’t even come off with my regular foaming face wash, and so I take off whatever’s left over with this remover. The remover is as unique as the eyeliner. It’s a cream that turns into a serum when you rub it into the skin. I like putting it on a cotton pad, and gently pat on the eyeliner to soften it, before swiping it off with the other side of the cotton pad. You can also rub it in with your fingers and then wash it off with a foaming cleanser.

Pick up the eyeliner ($29) and the remover ($22) at Sephora stores now.

L’Oreal Paris Nudes Collection

Loreal nudes collection spokeswomenEvery year, L’Oreal comes out with a collection of Nude lipsticks and nail polishes created with their spokespersons in mind.

The lipsticks are beautiful: they are long-wearing, smooth, and in a satin finish that is wearable for every day.

l'oreal nudes lipsticks

The collection is perfect if you’re trying to find nice neutral colours at an affordable price. My only suggestion when you go check these out at the drugstore is to ignore the name on them and try them all. You may find that more than one shade looks good on you because all the colours are very wearable.
L'Oreal Doutzen's Nude Swatch
I loved Doutzen’s nude nail polish – it worked for my skin tone even though I’m totally different from hers.

I didn’t like Eva’s nude polish even though I’m probably closer to her skin tone – this colour (an off white with golden shimmer in it) is just too yellow to look good on my skin.

You can find these in drugstores now.

Thursday Threes: Suncreen Options Better Than What You Used This Weekend

Did you run out of sunscreen last weekend? Or did you forget to even grab it because it’s tedious to apply? Well here are some new formulas that are better than what you have lying around – grab them before your weekend activities. They’re all from L’Oreal Paris; their new line of Sublime Sun products are amazing. New formulas that are unlike what’s out there. We tried them all and here are our favourites:

sunscreens

1. L’Oreal Sublime Sun Invisible Protect Dry Oil. This is perfect if you’re going to get photographed, because it makes your skin look moisturized and dewy. Perfect for the face and body, and it even works to defrizz hair in a pinch. SPF 30 and truly invisible besides the sheen. Especially fantastic for dry, irritated skin – the oil works to camouflage any dryness.

2.  L’Oreal Sublime Sun Silky Sheer Ultra-Light Mousse. A fantastic option if you like to see exactly where your applying so that you don’t miss any spots. Dries down to pretty much nothing so you don’t ever feel that you have it on. SPF 30 and perfect for a day in the park.

3. L’Oreal Sublime Sun Quick Dry Alcohol Free Sheer Finish Spray. Really does dry quickly and perfect for touch-ups. I like the spray sunscreens because they cool you down as you apply them, so they’re nice to have on hand if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors.

$17.99 each at drugstores now.

Streaky, patchy Self-Tanner? Here’s what to do:

best body scrubsSelf-tanners work best on top of smooth skin, so exfoliating before applying is very important. For the tan to continue looking great, it’s also important to exfoliate a couple of days after application so that the skin sloughs off evenly and the tan continues to look smooth.

St. Tropez recommends their own Tan Enhancing Body Polish ($18) which is made with round plastic beads so that you get a smooth even exfoliation, but we found that it wasn’t strong enough for really dry skin, and really, any body scrub will do a great job provided you use it thoroughly and regularly.

I really love the body scrubs by Soap and Glory. Scrub of Your Life ($16) is an amazing body polisher that will not only get rid of excess self-tanner but will also leave your skin super smooth for the next application. Follow Soap and Glory’s instructions: get wet in the shower, turn off the water, and then apply the scrub from head to toe, taking your time really scrubbing. Then rinse off. You’ll find that you’re able to really get a nice scrub without wasting any product down the drain.

Nuxe Huile Prodigeuse

nuxe huile prodigeuse limited editionI can’t believe I’m saying this, but actually, in all my time as beauty blogger, I hadn’t tried the infamous Nuxe Huile Prodigeuse. I think it’s because I’d always seen it at Shoppers Drug Mart (they always carried French pharmacy products way before it was trendy to do so) and so I just didn’t give it much thought.

But now I have my hands on a limited edition Nuxe Huile Prodigeuse limited edition bottle (with this cute little illustration on it), and I’ve been using it to moisturize daily and I love it.

This oil has been formulated with 6 precious oils from plants: macadamia nut, hazelnut, borage, sweet almond, camellia and St. John’s wort, and is a dry oil formula which makes it perfect for a grease-free finish. I use it daily after a shower and love that it seals in moisture.

Although this oil is moisturising, I will say that it is very light, so if you have very dry skin, you’ll likely need to layer on something thicker after applying this.

Pick it up at Shoppers Drug Mart, The Hudson’s Bay, Ogilvy, and Murale for $39.

Pureology Colour Fanatic Hair Treatment Spray

pureology colour fanaticI love leave-in conditioning sprays, and the one I’m using constantly right now is Pureology’s Colour Fanatic Hair Treatment Spray.

They say that it has 21 benefits, and although I’m not sure that’s entirely true, I will say that this is a multi-purpose product that helps your hair in a myriad of ways.

First and foremost, it is a detangler and great to use right after you wash your hair. It’ll give your hair just the right amount of slip and let your comb just glide through. The spray contains Camelina, Coconut, and Olive Oil, to give light weight conditioning, smoothing and anti-frizz results, and after using it for a while, I have to say that this is definitely moisturizing; in fact, I love to use it after swimming because it completely makes my hair feel soft and smooth whereas the ends can feel a little like straw if I don’t use this.

It is also a heat protectant, so if you’ve used the spray on the entire length of your hair, you can then go in with a blow dryer and minimize some damage.

The name Colour Fanatic also means that it’s good for colour-treated hair (all Pureology products are) and is meant to help colour from fading… although I do have coloured hair, I can’t comment on the fading aspect because I don’t really keep track of weather my hair is fading or not! It’s not red or any colour that really fades fast, so….

It does have a UV shield in it, and also makes your hair less prone to static.

Anyway, this leave-in is awesome and I do recommend it!

For the record, here are the “21 benefits” that this provides:

PRIME

Hair Color Protection
Leave In Conditioner
Hair Detangler Spray
Blow Dry Spray for Quick Drying
Moisturizer for Dry Hair
Low Porosity Hair Care
Weightless Conditioner
Hair Cutting Lotion
PROTECT

Split End Treatment & Prevention

Hair Fiber Product
Repair and Protect Heat Damaged Hair
Shields Hair Against Environmental Damage
PERFECT

Hair Smoothing Treatment
Silky Hair Treatment
Seals Hair Cuticle
Hair Moisturizer Spray for Reduced Dryness
Anti Frizz Hair Spray
Reduces Hair Static

Available at salons for $27.
