Sometimes, It’s Not The Foundation

primers and concealersYou wear foundation but you can still see the imperfections in your skin, and sometimes by the end of the day you’re wondering whether you forgot to put your makeup on at all.  It might seem like your foundation isn’t up to snuff, but chances are that it’s not your foundation that’s the problem and the solution lies in a group of products that should be in everyone’s makeup kit: we’re talking primers, setting powders, and concealers.  Here’s what you need to have a truly flawless face and keep it looking that way from day to night.

1. Primer. Like so many other things in the beauty world, the idea of a primer comes from painting. A primer can help fill in pores, smooth out wrinkles, and absorb oil – things that a foundation doesn’t necessarily have the ability to do.  Because it has the ability to fill in, foundation goes on much smoother, and because the primer is absorbing oil, the foundation will also stay on longer.  For a truly clean finish we love Dior’s new Airflash CC Primer ($49).  It sprays on so you get even coverage and helps your foundation stick to your skin.

The other way to use primer is in the way that you’d use it before painting a wall – a primer will help colour look truer and brighter, and the same goes when your’e wearing foundation.  We love Clinique’s new line of Superprimers ($29).  They correct colour so that your foundation doesn’t have to.  Use an orange-tinted one over dark circles, or a green-tint to help prime rosacea-prone areas.  When you apply your foundation on top not only will it go on more smoothly but it will seem to cover a lot better.

2. Setting Powder.  Setting powder is a must if you wear cream foundation.  It will help absorb any oils that rise through your foundation/primer combo and will blush/bronzer/highlighter blend in smoothly.  For an airy-light powder that doesn’t show up on the skin, we recommend Anna Sui’s Loose Compact Powder ($13).  The pretty compact also means that you can take the powder on the go which means that touch-ups no longer need to be a cakey affair.

3. Concealer.  If you have problem areas on your skin, think about adding a concealer to your look instead of going with a heavier coverage foundation.  A concealer can be used sparingly and only in the areas that you really need it, making your skin look flawless.  Common areas to conceal are under the eyes, around the nose, and areas that have had breakouts.  For a creamy full-coverage concealer we recommend Nars Radiant Creamy concealer ($30).

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Even Finish Foundations Review

bobbi brown long wear even finish foundations

I’ve been a fan of Bobbi Brown Foundation for a long time, because it’s one of the few brands that makes a colour that matches my skin exactly. For a long time, I bought the Bobbi Brown Oil-Free Even Finish compact foundation. They no longer make that one, but they do have a Long-Wear Even Finish Foundation that comes in a pump and cream compact formula. I just tried both of them, and while neither is a cream-to-powder number, both do work on all kinds of skin types, and best of all, they are meant to last the whole entire day.

Let’s start with the liquid foundation since it came first. This foundation contains SPF 15 and is medium to full coverage, which is the case with most long-wearing foundations. Unlike most other long-wear foundations it has an extremely light texture and does not have a matte finish. In fact, I would even say that this is a moisturizing foundation because it’s quite dewy.

When I used this foundation, I did find that it lasted the whole entire day on me. I didn’t even powder it and preferred to apply it on to bare skin so that it would really stick to the skin. It wasn’t oil absorbing but perhaps because it was adding moisture into my skin, I found that my skin wasn’t overly oil throughout the day and this foundation just looked perfect.

What I didn’t like about this foundation is that it seemed to accentuate imperfections in my skin. Any kind of uneven-ness was just highlighted and although you couldn’t see that from afar, this isn’t a foundation that I’d want people to see sitting next to me. I might wear it when I’m getting photographed or if I was giving a speech, but it wouldn’t be my choice to wear to work everyday.

The compact is a different story. Created as a complement to the Long-Wear liquid foundation, this compact is still oil-free but it’s not a completely matte powdery finish. It’s a satin finish and is light to full coverage. You can really build it and play with it. I use the accompanying sponge for everyday, but find that I can use my fingers and go back and dab on where I need to. I tried using a brush to apply this foundation and I found that the bristles stuck to the compact so I wouldn’t recommend that.

This foundation really does look like real skin. It’s even, it’s not powdery but not greasy either, and again, although it’s not strictly oil-absorbing, it stays in place all day and just seems to stick to the skin.

The liquid foundation is $55 and the compact is $54. I’ve been told that the compact doesn’t last a long time and my experience with the Oil-to-Powder compact was the same – it would last me a couple of months and that was it. But that being said, because I loved the foundation so much and because there was nothing else like it, I just kept using it and going back to it, and I feel the same way about the Long-Wear Even Finish compact foundation. There’s nothing like it out there, and so if you need a long-wearing foundation that looks natural and is still light, then this will be your best bet.

Pick up both foundations at Bobbi Brown counters in Holt Renfrew or Sephora.

Burberry Effortless Kohl – Oxblood

Burberry Effortless Kohl OxbloodThis winter, Burberry launches a product for eyes and lips. Called Effortless Kohl, this comes in bold shades that really can be used anywhere.

We got the Kohl in Oxblood, and so it seemed only appropriate that we only use it on our lips. It wears more like a traditional pencil – not as smooth and soft as we could have liked (this is not like all those jumbo lip crayons out there), but because it’s so dry it means that you can really build colour in a personalized way. One coat of the colour is a sheer wash, while additional swipes mean you can get opaque coverage. Because it’s so dry the lasting power is amazing.

Oxblood is a deep dark red, and it will suit almost every skin tone. It’s the perfect colour for the season, but you might need courage to pull it off every day.

Pick it up at Burberry counters now.

New L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Lashes Mascara

loreal voluminous butterfly lashes mascaraThis mascara has a wand out of a sci-fi movie, and it looks so sharp and pointy that we were initially worried about using it. I mean, do you really need so many different sizes of bristles on one wand?

Turns out that you do.  If you take a look at the shape of the wand, the tiniest bristles are on the outside of the wand, and the longer bristles are on the inside of the wand.  This means that when you hold the wand up to your eyes (with the handle going out), the little bristles hang on to your short inner lashes, while the longer bristles grab your long outside lashes.  The final effect is that mascara gets applied evenly and thoroughly giving you the illusion of long butterfly-wing lashes.

The mascara formula doesn’t actually do much upon first application but it layers beautifully.  I’d even argue that it’s made to be layered because the layer works so well to give oomph and real volume to the lashes.

My majorly oily eyelids experienced no smearing with this mascara but I did have some flaking throughout the day.  It didn’t bother me because my lashes looked so amazing, and I’m even going to say that this is my current favourite mascara – I threw out the mascara I was previously using (Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash) so that I could use this one.

Available at mass retailers now for $11.99.

Trending Right Now: Highlight and Conceal

kim kardashian highlight and concealThe hottest trend in makeup today doesn’t have to do with a specific product, and although it’s neither new or overly difficult to do, it’s a makeup artist technique that’s made it out to the masses thanks to Kim Kardashian’s overly done makeup and reality television.  Because reality television celebrities seem to look flawless all the time, everybody’s realized that with a little effort and the right techniques, anyone can look flawless.   It’s a technique any Youtube makeup guru will have in their playlist and that any self-proclaimed makeup junkie will have mastered.  Simply called HAC for short, Highlighting and Concealing is how you can make your face look like it belongs on the pages of a fashion magazine.  It helps your cheekbones stand out, your nose appear thinner, and you can even make your lips look fuller.

Following the basic principals of light placement, highlighting and concealing requires just two shades of makeup, brushes, and lots of blending.  The idea is to place light colours on the higher parts of your face and dark colours on parts of your face you’d like receded.  This makes certain areas stand out (such as cheekbones) and others don’t (such as the fullness in the cheeks).

What’s made the technique go viral was when Kim tweeted a picture of the technique used on her by famous makeup artist Scott Barnes. The before picture makes it look as if she’s wearing radical war paint.

That image caused a stir, but makeup geeks paid attention to the image that came after – a perfectly blended face where highlight and contouring was placed but subtle.  The best part is that this is a technique that doesn’t have to be left to the professionals: it’s easy enough to do at home, and even quick enough to do on a daily basis.

How to HAC Your Own Face:

1. Start by applying a foundation that closely matches your skin tone.  You can highlight and contour bare skin, but it’s nice to have a flawless canvas to apply product over.  Our go-to foundation is Bobbi Brow

n’s Long-Wear Even Finish Foundation because it’s long-lasting and looks natural.

2. Take a concealer a half-shade lighter than your foundation.  Apply in an inverted triangle shape under your eyes.  The point of the triangle should be near the tip of your nose. We love Benefit’s Stay Don’t Stray concealer because it sets without the aid of powder.  Use a concealer brush to blend – Hourglass Cosmetics’ Large Concealer brush is large enough to do the job without any streaking.

3.  Also apply the concealer in a thin line down the bridge of the nose and blend.  If you use a concealer you can highlight your nose without making it look oily the way that shimmery powder can.

4. Take a shade of powder or cream bronzer darker than your skin tone.  Make sure this bronzer is matte and not shimmery so that it really looks like a shadow.  Suck in your cheeks and apply the bronzer to the hollows and up into the hairline near your ear.  Also apply bronzer to your temples and under your chin and jaw.  Blend the bronzer by making a 3 formation starting from the temples, working into the hollows of your cheeks, and then down to your jawline. We love Hourglass’s Illume Cream-To-Powder Bronzing duo in Bronze Light because the creamy brown colour is sheer but buildable so it works on many skin tones.

5. Apply powder to set and blend your highlight and contour!  Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish powder is light and matte but with a slight sheen so that skin retains its natural illuminance.

Givenchy Teint Couture Long-Wearing Foundation

…around here, we love long-wearing foundations.  They really do last the whole day and so it’s nice not to have to second guess your makeup halfway through the day.

givenchy teint couture foundations

The new long-wear foundations are so different from what used to be out there.  They are smooth on the skin, not over-matte, and reflect light so that they look like skin.

Givenchy advertises that the Teint Couture Long-Wearing Foundation ($55) is “comfortable” on the skin, and that is most definitely true.  Teint Couture goes on like regular foundation – it’s soft, smooth, and almost dewy.  But then in about 5 minutes, it sets to a powder and just sticks to the skin and looks perfect.  It is extremely easy to wear, and looks entirely natural.

I like applying this with my fingers because I find that’s the best way for it to look natural.  Applying with a foundation brush took a lot more product, and the foundation went on thicker than I would have liked but still set nicely and made my skin look amazing.

This lasted through a workout (sweat showed through but not oil) and lasts and lasts through very very long days.  Soap and water take it off easily.

Givenchy also has a Teint Couture Long-Wearing Compact Foundation ($66) which is the powder version of this foundation.  It is also long-wearing but best for touch ups since it doesn’t have as much coverage as the liquid.  I love using it on the go and have it in my bag at all times. It comes with a strip of light pink highlighter, which seems unnecessary, but works as an eyeshadow in a pinch.   The compact is heavy with a huge mirror, a sponge applicator, and a generous square of foundation.  It is truly gorgeous and I loved holding it in my hand and applying foundation.  $66 is a lot to spend on foundation, but the heft and weight of this compact remind you of its luxury every time you pick it up.

The powder is super light and silky.  It’s not at all caky, and that also means that it’s not that easy to build coverage with this.  You can layer it on, but it pretty much stays a medium-light coverage foundation.  That also means that it looks very natural and is easy to wear.

Compact or Liquid?  I prefer the liquid for everyday because it works even if your skin is slightly dry.  The compact would be good for packing on vacation or in your gym bag, but if you do prefer a powder foundation, then the compact is probably the way to go.

Redken Diamond Oil

Redken Diamond Oil systemRedken Diamond Oil offers amazing shine and hydration for dry and damaged hair. The entire line is silicone free and instead uses natural oils, including Coconut, jojoba, and apricot oils, to hydrate, nourish, and smooth hair.

The line includes a shampoo, conditioner, treatment mask, the Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine, and Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine Intense, and we tried them all.

True to Redken’s style, the shampoo is super hydrating but very foaming and cleansing. A tiny bit goes a long long way – something we haven’t experienced in shampoos for quite a while. The conditioner is buttery soft and still light. The mask is rich and thick – intense and perfect for the occasional treat for your hair.

But the true stars of this collection is the Diamond Oil and its intense version.

Diamond Oil is super light – almost like water in your hands – but it packs a punch. One tiny dropper full is all we needed for our long hair, and it was enough to combat frizz and make hair shiny and soft.

Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine Intense Intense is a little bit thicker than the original version, but and would be great for thick or coarse hair that can handle more product. Again, we found that we just needed a little bit in our hair to hydrate and smooth it down, and we still had intense shine even though we weren’t using much of it.

The entire line of products smells absolutely amazing. It’s like high-end perfume – woodsy and smoky all in one without being overpowering (truly, we wished the scent lasted a little longer than it does).

Overall, if you have dry and damaged hair, you will want to invest in the Diamond Oil – it’s especially useful if you want to stay away from silicones but still want something smoothing for your hair.

Pick up Redken Diamond Oil products at salons everywhere. The line includes a shampoo ($20.50), conditioner ($21.60), mask ($29.15), Diamond Oil ($43.20), and Diamond Oil Intense ($43.20)

Limited Edition: Santa Baby Lip Tint from Lush

Lush Santa Baby Lip TintLush’s Lip Tints are perfect for the girl on the go who prefers her lips stained rather than rouged. The packaging of the lip tints are specifically made so that you can smear them on with your pinky finger and just add a hint of colour to your look.

Santa Baby is a bright fuchsia red that’s quite hard in the tin but melts slightly with the heat of your fingers. It’s wearable because you can apply it lightly or layer it on until you get the colour intensity that you need.

Lush says that this is hydrating as well, but that’s a little misleading. Although the base is made of emollients, there is so much pigment in Santa Baby that you need such a tiny amount on your lips. That means that you’re not really applying much and so there’s barely any relief for dry lips.

If you have dry lips, my suggestion would be to apply a light layer of moisturizer before, wait for it to absorb, and then apply Santa Baby. Alternately, you could top with a gloss, but that’s going to mean that the colour isn’t going to last that long, and that would be a shame because one of the highlights of this titn is that it is so long lasting.

Pick it up at Lush stores or at Lush.ca for $8.95.
