Hair Born Again

…thanks to Kevin.Murphy.

kevin murphy born again line

The cold season isn’t just a time for us to change our skin care, it’s also a time to give some TLC to our hair. Because the possibly humidity outdoors and the definite dryness indoors, hair can be dryer and more finicky in the winter time. For me, it’s also damaged from the summer of attending weddings and events where I want my hair to look perfect. I love to blow-dry and straight iron all year around, and unfortunately, that has always been apparent in my hair.

In the past, I’ve always thought that the only way to rehabilitate my hair was to swear off the hot styling tools for a season, but after speaking to Tim McLean, Kevin.Murphy’s Style.Master, I needed to try the Born.Again line of products and see if they could help my hair.

The Born.Again line is specially made for dry coloured hair, and is ultra rich and moisturizing but still light-weight enough to make your hair look good. It has soy protein to help build up hair, and wheat proteins that act as conditioners. It also contains vitamin B5 to enhance the silkiness of the hair, and essential oils that can penetrate the hair and help repair it from the inside out. The line contains a shampoo, a treatment (that’s meant to be used as a conditioner), and a masque (to be used sparingly and only once in a while). Each product in the line can really repair hair from the inside, and this is so much more than just a cuticle-smoothing line of products.

So upon Tim’s recommendation I used the three Born.Again products for my dry damaged colour-treated hair. I’ve been using them for about a month now, and I have to say that I can actually see the difference in my hair. Where my curls were falling flat before because the ends were so damaged, the natural curl holds all the way throughout the hair. When I blow-dry or straighten it, there are no raggedy ends, and I can get everything to look nice and smooth without much work.

Although I love the masque because it’s nice and thick, the shampoo and conditioner are actually my favourite products. They are seriously moisturizing but very light-weight. The shampoo especially feels light as air without being stripping or drying, and I could even use it on its own without the treatment and still feel that my hair was getting some moisture added to it. It also helps that the shampoo is sulfate-free (but has a nice thick lather) and all the products are paraben free. Meanwhile, the Essential Treatment is hydrating and detangling, and the masque is ultra-rich and thick and contains an even higher amount of amino acids and hydrators, including Shea butter, Mango butter, Jojoba, and oils to help lock moisture into the hair. It’s the perfect product to use mid-month to really help hair look and feel its best.

Pick up the Born Again line at salons. The Born.Again shampoo retails for $27.50, the Essential Treatment is $35, and the Masque $39.

You Can Take Fashion Out of Italy, but…

…a little something I wrote for the Calgary Herald. You can check out the full article here.

As the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra puts on a fashion show as part of their Festival Italiano series, and fashionable people head to The Core to watch the Holt Renfrew show, we couldn’t help but think about the Italian influence on fashion now. The Missoni plane disappearance earlier this year definitely caught our attention, and we were drooling over the Emporio Armani Baby display at Holt Renfrew, but why does our fascination with all things Italian start and stop with fashionable?  We turned to stylist Phaedra Godchild to help us understand the appeal of Italian fashion.  Ms. Godchild, one half of the styling team known as Styleista, is the stylist behind the Italian Gala fashion show and has many years of experience in the fashion industry.  The entire show was curated from Holt Renfew, so of course there were tons of great pieces to choose from.

Italian fashion has always had something inherently accessible about it even while remaining high quality and high end. Godchild adds: “the seemingly glamourous lifestyle of the Italians is appealing to us North Americans, and when you combine that with impeccable tailoring and on-trend pieces, then you have a fashion that’s highly coveted.”   The Italian legacy of guilds and craftmanship has ensured that qualified artists make the goods, while its history of coming on to the scene after World War II means that it was ready-to-wear created for the masses rather than just for the extremely wealthy. Godchild says that Italian labels have been influential for so long because they are “timeless and ultimately sought after.  As consumers are looking at where things are made, a ‘a made in Italy’ label’ sells itself because Italy is top for craftmanship and quality.”

There’s also a something for everyone in the Italian fashion scene and the trends represented by Italian designers are evergreen.   Missoni’s quirky zig-zag print speaks to the bohemian woman and fits seamlessly into the boho trend that’s still present.  Pucci’s printed skiwear was perfect for the sportswear fan – and the printed sweatshirt makes a comeback this season.  Meanwhile, Gucci hasn’t lost its sleek glamour, and Prada’s use of cutting edge fabrics and leathers will never go out of style.  Godchild points out that “Italy has a history of setting the stage for prints” and tradition of prints gets reinterpreted in different ways to make them modern; one only has to look at the  mixed prints we’re seeing these days.

We couldn’t help but ask Godchild for a sneak peak of the designers that she was using in the fashion show.  Her top four favourites (for men and women) are: Etro – because their clothes are so beautiful to look at; D&G – because they exude Italian sex appeal; Armani – because the clothes are refined and classic; and Brunello Cucinelli because he’s a master at layering luxurious fabrics and textures, especially cashmere and fur which are must-haves this winter season.

Truly, fashion from Italy will never go out of vogue.  The rich tradition of prints and craftsmanship found in cities such as Florence and Venice, combined with state-of-the-art tailoring and structuring means that a “Made in Italy” stamp is synonymous with quality, and that’s something that will have consumers coming back no matter what.  Moreover, the Italians seem to be the epitome of style and glamour which means that Italian fashion will retain its aspirational quality – it will always appeal to those who want their clothes to say that they have a taste for la bella vita.  Ironically, over the years Italian fashion hasn’t been immune to the effects and indeed benefits of globalization.  Gucci made its comeback thanks to American designer Tom Ford at the helm, and Fendi’s creative director has been German Karl Lagerfeld, who also designs for the epic French brand Chanel.  Many Italian brands also got their first taste of success when their collections were picked up by American department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman.  But it only makes sense that Italian fashion has done so well in North America: Americans love sportswear and Italy betters sportswear by making it unendingly glamourous and since those two qualities will never go out of style, neither will our love of Italian fashion.

Driven – Derek Jeter for Avon

derek Jeter avonNo Home Run….but a solid base hit

Ask any baseball fan about the New York Yankees and you will receive one of two replies – they either love them or hate them. However, regardless of your feelings for the team, Derek Jeter always commands the respect of baseball fans young and old alike. Building upon the success Mr. Jeter has found on the baseball field comes his new line of men’s products – Driven (by Avon)

I tested out the Driven: Rush brand of Body Wash ($9) and Cologne ($25) over the course of a week and found that, just like Jeter, they were consistent and did the job when called upon.

The cologne has a sharp, crisp smell and instantly provided the image of getting suited up after a big game – much like Mr. Jeter has done many times before hitting up the New York nightlife. The body wash is similar in quality to the cologne and provides the necessary fragrance that a shower product should.

My only gripe with the cologne is that it is maybe a bit too similar to other “body sprays” that are on the market. The creative minds at Avon would have been better served by attempting some additional fragrance choices to separate this brand from the rest of the colognes branded by athletes.

Bottom line, if you are looking for a gift for the Yankees fan in your life the Driven product line will get the job done – just like Jeter.

Moroccanoil Reaches Out to the Other Half: Moroccanoil Styling Gel Molding Cream Review

We have a new male writer! Please welcome Harpal Chattha who will be reviewing all things related to men’s grooming from now on.  If you have any suggestions for the types of products you’d like to see him write about, leave us a comment below!

moroccanoil styling gel and molding cream

Like most men I have tried many different types of gels, hair creams, pastes and waxes for my hair. Depending on the style of my hair, whether I am getting ready for work, a get-together on the weekend or after the gym I just want something that works with minimal hassle. Rarely have I thought about WHAT I was putting in my hair.

This makes the hair products from Moroccanoil a pleasant surprise. The Moroccanoil Styling Gel ($19.80) and Molding Cream ($28.00) both provide an effective and easy to use set of hair products to get you through your day. Moroccanoil is big on hyping their “antioxidant infused, nutrient rich, innovative formulas” and I will say these hair products do provide something different on the hair care market that separate them from the competition.

Not being a big fan of gels I was a tad skeptical about using the Styling Gel product. How many times have guys been left with that sticky residue after applying a blob of gel to their hair? Moroccanoil products seem to evaporate right off your hands and provide a no-fuss no-muss way to style your hair effectively.  The gel can be used on short hair, but also on longer hair as a blowdrying gel.

The Molding Cream was truly made with the other half in mind.

“We spent years developing and perfecting the Moroccanoil Molding Cream formula,” explains Antonio Corral Calero, Moroccanoil Artistic Director. “We wanted to create one single product for men and women that would give professional stylists detailed control over any hair type, length and texture while allowing them to shape, deconstruct or build styles.”

The Molding Cream takes things a step further and provides excellent hold, with natural looking hair and is one of the easiest to handle creams on the market. I was very impressed with just how long the hold lasted and the natural feel of my hair as well – both traits that men appreciate and hair care companies should make note of. It was well worth the “you’re crazy” look I got from my wife when I asked her to feel and smell my hair – Moroccanoil products definitely passed the test.

Essie Encrusted Treasures Collection 2013

Nail art may be a thing of the past (well, almost) but taking its place is polish finishes that are anything but ordinary. Essie may be the last to the finish line in coming out with their own uniquely finished polish, but they’ve definitely taken the category to the next level with their Encrusted Treasures Collection.

essie encrusted collection 2013

Each polish in the collection is completely different and the collection lets you achieve a variety of looks.
Nails look finished and like shimmering jewels.

The colours are:

belugaria—holographic jet black lace
peak of chic—alpine white holographic rainbow fringe
on a silver platter—pearlescent gold with holographic violet glitter
lots of lux—shimmering lapis lazuli with a superfine matte finish
ignite the night—sparkling hematite with a superfine matte finish
hors d’oeuvres—platinum gold with iridescent silver glitter

The most amazing colour is definitely Belugaria.  It’s a black that looks almost like a caviar manicure when you wear it.  It has holographic glitter in it but also chunks of black polish.  One coat is all you need for a super chunky almost junk-like finish.  It’s so cool, and pretty difficult to describe, so check out my swatch:

essie belugariaI used no base coat or top coat with this and had decent wear… about 3 days without any chipping.  I think that’s to be expected with a polish that goes on like this.

Peak of Chic is little bits of white and holographic fringe.  It’s the furry effect, and it’s available through other polish lines as well.  I applied it on top of Essie’s Mind Your Mittens from their Winter 2013 collection. This is just 1 coat.

essie peak of chic

Essie On a Silver Platter is super pretty and I got tons of compliments on this one.

essie on a silver platter

Ignite the Night is definitely one of my favourites.  It really is a hematite colour: charcoal grey shimmer and the matte finish doesn’t get caught on clothes or in hair.  Two coats gave me opaque coverage, and I liked wearing it without a top coat, although you could certainly wear one for extra shine.

essie ignite the night swatch

Lots of Lux is a bright blue shimmer with a matte finish.  It’s different from OPI’s Sand polish because the shimmer is sparkly.

essie lots of lux

Here is Hors D’Oeuvres:

essie hors d'oeuvres

This is a light yellow gold base with lots of large silver glitter in it.  It’s quite a chunky finish, so use it with a top coat if you like these finishes smooth.

This is probably one of my favourite nail polish collections EVER.  It’s super pretty and each colour is totally unique.  Although I loved wearing these polishes, at the end of all this swatching I got really sick of taking off the glitter.  It’s a pain because it really sticks to the nail – you would think that would make the lasting power of these polishes better, but that wasn’t the case.  These are awesome for special occasions but I wouldn’t wear them every day (even though I love them) (Ok, maybe Ignite the Night I would wear daily).

Oil Miracle!

BC Oil Miracle ProductsBy now, if you haven’t added some oil-containing products to some part of your beauty regimen, you are really missing out.  The latest to hit shelves is BC Oil Miracle by Schwarzkopf.  The two new products in the collection are a Volume Amplifier and a Divine Polish.  Both are amazing products that really add something different to what may already be in your hair care lineup.

I’ll start with the Divine Polish which is a shine spray that’s meant to be applied on to dry hair to give it some shine.  You may already have a shine product in your kit, but this one bests all the ones that I was currently using.  It is non-greasy (really, you can’t use too much of it), and it is also a dry spray so that it’s not wet and it won’t make your hair get more frizzy.  The spray does have some alcohol in it but I didn’t mind that because it meant that it’s fast-drying and it just adds shine and nothing else to your hair.

The Volume Amplifier equally amazing.  It is formulated with Argan, Marula, Almond, Macadamia and Jojoba oils and works like a leave-in conditioning cream.  It also adds some texture to your hair which makes it have a bit more grip, and it contains shimmer so that it adds a sheen to your hair.  I loved the creaminess of the product but that it didn’t weigh my hair down.  It also left my hair super soft and very manageable.  It did make my hair look thicker as well.

Most of all, I love that both these products add a dose of conditioning to my hair and just make it more manageable.  Love them!

Check them out at salons for $17.95 each.

Thursday Threes: Awesome Moisturizers

winter 2013 moisturizers…featuring Nivea, Lush, and Philosophy.  Come winter-time (yes, it’s officially here when stores start advertising for Christmas) I need to surround myself with lotions.  I have one in the bathroom, at my desk, and beside my bed, so that I can atleast keep torn cuticles at bay.  Here are my three favourite body lotions right now – and they’re going to end up on my empty list at some point too!

1. Nivea Soft.

I’ve actually grown up with Nivea – the original kind in the blue tins, and if you’re from a developing country then you probably have too!  It’s the one cream that’s always been cheap and easy to find, and can relieve temporary dryness in a second.  Safe enough to use on the body and the face, if you’re a Nivea fan you’re in good company because you can find it all over the world!  My dad always had a small tin of tube in his laptop bag or in the dash of his car, and so of course after seeing it so much, it makes sense that it’s been years since I tried it on myself.
Nivea Soft
Then, this past fall, this pretty little tub of Nivea Soft came my way and I finally cracked it open.

It’s definitely not the thick greasy lotion of the original Nivea, but instead, a light-as-air soft cream that still has a light version of the iconic Nivea scent.  Nivea Soft is super quick absorbing, completely non-greasy, and still made for the hair, body, hands, and face. It also contains Vitamin E and Jojoba to nourish the skin. I DO NOT use this on my face, but it’s done a decent job at hydrating my hands and nails as the weather gets colder.

You might not be able to find my pretty little tub anymore (it was limited edition designed by Giles Deacon this September) but you can get Nivea Soft at major drug, pharmacy and mass merchandise stores. $10.99 for 200ml.
2. Lush Celebrate Hand and Body Lotion.

Cognac is everywhere this Christmas season, and no not to drink! It’s being used in perfumes!
Lush Celebrate Body Lotion

First, it made its appearance in the Aerin Evening Rose perfume, and now in this intense new limited edition body lotion from Lush. Celebrate has apparently been selling for years in Japan, and now it’s available in North America for the Christmas season.

Like most Lush lotions, this one is strongly scented (with cognac oil making an appearance) and leaves your skin quite greasy. The base is made up of Almond Oil, Cocoa Butter, and Glycerine so this not only relieves any dryness on the skin, but also attracts moisture to the skin.

The perfume of the lotion is made up of orange oil, lime, benzoin, and cognac oil, and the overall effect is fresh and sharp (very much as if you smelled the rind of an orange). It’s also warm and settles and wears nicely on the skin – notice that I can talk about the lotion almost like a perfume, and this is so strongly scented that it wears like a perfume.  It’s not for everyone, but it’s nice to use on your hands – I find that’s the perfect amount of scent for me.

I love love love this lotion because it is so rich and perfect for super cold months. It’s also very creamy and easy to spread and basically the next best thing to using a Lush body butter or a body oil.

Pick it up at Lush stores or at Lush.ca. $29.95 for a 220g tub.

3. Philosophy Living Grace Firming Body Emulsion.

living grace lotion

I love Philosophy lotions because they’re the perfect mix between something like Nivea and a Lush-type lotion.  They are made with natural oils (like those from Lush), but they’re completely non-greasy and absorb into the skin rather quickly (like Nivea Soft).  I love the Living Grace Firming Emulsion because it has a nice clean, yet warm, scent that’s very wearable.  By the time I’m ready to get dressed, this has sunk into my skin and any dryness or itchiness is kept away.

Pick it up at The Bay for $44. This is the most expensive lotion of the bunch, but it goes without saying that i’s also the most luxurious and the formula is unparalleled.  Might be worth a splurge.

New Clinique Superprimer Face Primers

Clinique superprimersYou haven’t read many primer reviews on this blog because to tell you the truth I’m not a huge fan of primers.  The majority of them are silicone-heavy which clogs my pores, and I have this belief that foundation should last well into the day on its own, with maybe a slight dusting of powder on top, more to help my blush and bronzer blend better.

But when a product has “super” in front of it… I guess I just have to try it.

What made me more interested in these primers is that they come in different colours to target different skin tone problems: there’s a primer to counteract redness in skin, one to make sallow skin brighter, and another to deal with the blue/green that can be seen in under eye circles.  There’s also an clear Universal Face Primer.

Colour-correcting primers are not at all new.  Lise Watier has had a colour-correcting concealer wheel on the market for a long time.  I remember walking into a friend doing her makeup maybe ten years ago, and seeing her face covered with green lotion to counteract the natural rosiness her skin had.  She would then layer foundation on top, and had I not already seen her getting ready, I would have never known that her skin was red at all.  Using this type of primer is a common makeup artist trick: if you can counteract any kind of colour issues that your skin is having, it’s easier to make foundation look like natural skin.  Most foundation isn’t meant to cover up colour issues, it’s simply made to even out your skin.  You’ll find a colour-corrector especially useful if you use a sheer foundation as it is because all of a sudden you might not need to take care of colour issues.  If you use a colour-corrector, you might even find that you can down-grade the coverage you need in a foundation because all of a sudden there’s not that much to cover anymore.

You can also use the primer just in the spots that you need such as the T-zone so that it can absorb oil.  You can use the colour-correcting primer just in areas that need the correcting, although these are so sheer in terms of colour that sometimes it might be easier to use them all over the face.

Anyway, I checked out Clinique Superprimer Universal Face Primer and Colour Corrects Dullness in Deeper Skins.  Both the primers rubbed into my skin without leaving any noticeable colour behind, and I would say that it’s going to fairly easy for you to see what your skin needs in order to pick a primer that suits your skin.

I was happy to see that the Universal Face Primer actually doesn’t have much of a silicone-like feel and just feels like a thick moisturizer.  It blends in smoothly and immediately makes pores disappear and seems to fill fine lines.  Skin looks brighter too!  It’s easier to blend foundation on top of a primer and I did find that the brightness that the primer added shone through the foundation.  Without any additional setting powder, my foundation, which does tend to melt rather easily, stayed put throughout a busy day and was more matte than usual.  A couple of dry patches seemed to be highlighted, but the next time I’ll use a moisturizer just on those areas before I apply this primer.

The colour-correcting primers have a higher level of silicone in them and so feel quite dry going on. Because of the silicone, the primers are excellent at filling in pores and making skin appear more smooth and even.  These feel like a typical primer but are tinted.  The one I tried had very little pigment in it and absolutely no shimmer which was fine with me.  It did tend to look a tiny bit orange, and I can see how that would brighten up a deeper skin tone, however it might be a touch too sheer to really make a huge difference.  If you have skin that suffers from dullness, I would suggest using a highlighter at the highest parts of your face (cheekbones, forehead) and using brighter colours on the lips and cheeks.

The Superprimers are now available at the Clinique counter for $29 each.

L’Oreal Elnett Satin Heat Styling Spray Review

I’ve always been a huge fan of Elnett hairspray so I really wanted to try their heat protection sprays.  There’s a version for curls and a version for straightening your hair, and I checked out both.

First, I tried the one for curls.  I didn’t like it.  My curls didn’t stay whereas they normally do and I think that the spray weighed my hair down so that it didn’t retain the bounce of the curls.

elnett heat protectAfter that experience I wasn’t that interested in trying the Straight version of the spray, but then one day before blowdrying it’s what came into my hand and I tried it. The L’Oreal Elnett Satin Heat Styling Spray Straight styling spray is extremely light and comes out in a superfine mist.  It seemed to help my hair dry really fast, and I loved that because I didn’t have to apply as much heat on it.  The spray is supposed to keep your hair straight for 3 days, and although it wasn’t as straight as it is when I blow-dry it, it looked good enough on day 3 that I didn’t feel like I had to rewash my hair.  I used lots of dry shampoo and I was good to go.

Also, sometimes I wash my hair at night but don’t want to blow-dry it for fear of waking the whole house; I’ve found that in the morning I can just spray my hair with this Heat Styling Spray and then blowdry!

Pick it up from drugstores for $10.99.
