loccitane repairing lineWith an amazing lineup of moisturizers for the body (most of which have a very high concentration of Shea Butter!), it’s easy to see why we missed L’Occitane’s haircare collection.  But it turns out that the company has paid special attention to its haircare range, blending essential oils into their Aromachologie formulas to provide aromatherapy benefits when the products are used.

The new Repairing line blends 5 essential oils: geranium, lavender, ylang-ylang, sweet orange, and angelica and is specially made to treat and repair dry and weak hair.

The line includes a shampoo ($22), conditioner ($22), mask ($36) and oil ($26), all of which smell absolutely amazing.  The scent is uplifting and spa-quality and lingers in your hair a while after you’ve used the products.  If you like natural fresh scents, then you’ll absolutely love using the Repairing line at L’Occitane.

Tom Ford Private Blend Atelier D’Orient Fragrance Collection Review

tom ford atelier d'orientI think it’s probably not surprising that Tom Ford makes my favourite perfumes.  The brand has only the best whether it’s shoes, clothes, or makeup, and the perfume collection is an amazing blend of truly unique scents that smell high-end and clean.  I love them because unlike a lot of cheaper and more mainstream perfumes, none of these are overloaded with vanilla or amber.  I’ve said many times that often scents smell really sweet on me, so those are two ingredients I really try to avoid, and I don’t have to try too hard when I go to the Tom Ford counter!  I find that all the scents are easy to wear and if you have trouble finding a signature scent, you should really check out this counter.

The Atelier D’Orient fragrance collection has four scents: Plum Japonais, Shanghai Lily, Rive D’Ambre, and Fleur de Chine.

I loved the lush fruitiness of Plum Japonais, the warmth of Rive D’Ambre (it doesn’t get too sweet, which is also nice), and the floral bouquet of Fleur de Chine, but my absolute favourite is Shanghai Lily.

It’s because the lily is blended with frankincense which smells rich and musty, and a touch of vanilla which gives it a hint of sweetness.  It’s a lush yet wearable scent that lasts and lasts.

You can find Tom Ford Private Blend perfumes at Holt Renfrew or Harry Rosen stores.

$230 for 50ml or $570 for 250 ml.

OPI San Francisco Collection and Swatches

… a little late in posting this, but if you’ve been following me on Twitter you’ve seen some of these swatches.  The San Francisco collection includes three new shades of OPI’s Liquid Sand finish which is probably my favourite way to wear matte nail polish.  It just looks so chic and under the radar, and I love that you don’t need a base or top coat with it, but the polish still lasts and lasts.

opi san francisco

The colours are:

A-Piers to Be Tan

I shore do like this chocolaty tan.

Just feast your eyes on this fresh-air blue!

There’s no holding back this assertive navy blue.

Incognito in Sausalito

You better keep this almost-black blue under wraps.

There’s no escaping this arresting textured gray.

Here’s my swatch of Alcatraz…Rocks with Haven’t the Foggiest as the feature nail.

alcatraz rocks with haven't the foggiestAlcatraz…Rocks is the most amazing colour.  It’s a dark blue base with lots of grey/silver textured glitter in it.

Here’s It’s All Andrea’s Fault.  It’s definitely a sleeper hit.  It looked much nicer on my nails than it did in the bottle.  It’s a super chic neutral colour.

its all andreas faultFinally, Wharf! Wharf! Wharf!  Super pretty cobalt blue… in a liquid sand finish, of course, so it’s different from last season’s cobalt.

wharf wharf wharf

Clearly, if I was going to recommend any colour  to you, it would be the liquid sand ones.  They are so fun to wear, and look amazing on.  Removal is easy enough, if you just buff the top of the nail before you apply nail polish remover.

Enjoy!

I Tried: The Wantable Makeup Box

So if you’re into beauty, by now you’ve heard of Birchbox and other companies who offer you the chance to try high-end beauty items at a fraction of the price.  All you have to do is sign up for a subscription and they’ll send you some full-sized, some deluxe sample sized, and some mini products each month to try.  Now, I’ve never gotten a membership but from the boxes I’ve received I haven’t been hugely impressed with these because, lets face it, I get tons of samples to try anyways, and have a way with the counter ladies and can get my hands on sample sizes if I’m really hard up.  These days, all you have to do is walk into a Sephora and you can go home with a full skincare regimen that will last you a week – and you don’t have to spend a penny in the story!

But then I got asked by Wantable if I wanted to try their new makeup box.  The concept was the same, but with a twist.  You first fill out a questionnaire saying what you’re interested in, and then they send you corresponding products.  This way, you’re not stuck with things you don’t want or need, and the chance of you getting something you actually love is higher.  This worked for me.  I didn’t want any skincare products, and am not even in the market for new eyeshadow or blush.  All I’m really after is new lippies, and they were willing to send me more of those.

Wantable imageWell my box arrived, and it was full of some great things and some not so great things: some things that were truly forgettable were in that box, but the whole trial was worth it because I got one thing that I’m going to be treasuring for a long time: a Besame Cosmetics Crimson Cream Rouge (worth $22).  Besame Cosmetics is a vintage-inspired brand that I’ve had my eye on for a long time.  Apparently, their lipsticks are to die for, and the lipstick bullets are even gold-plated!  The Crimson Cream Rouge comes in a tin, and is a highly pigmented cream blush or lip tint.  You can apply it with your fingers and the tint lasts a long time.  It’s the original lip stain and is a dark pinkish-red.

I’m so thrilled with the Cream Rouge that I got, and I’m pretty sure that I got it because of the preferences I listed in the questionnaire.  Of all the sample boxes I’ve received, this is the only one that’s yielded something truly great and that I’m going to hold on to for a long time.

Check out Wantable (wantable.com) – they also do accessory and intimates boxes.  The makeup boxes have 4 to 6 full-size premium makeup products and a subscription is $36 (per box) and you can cancel any time.  A one time purchase is $40.

Gosh CC Cream Review

Gosh CC CreamCheck out my new favourite foundation-like product:

Gosh CC Cream.

I love it because the texture and finish is just like my favourite Benefit Oxygen-Wow Foundation .

It’s a moisturizing, dewy finish which makes skin look really healthy.  Your natural skin shows through the product (CC creams are colour-correcting not covering), so it looks like your own skin but better…. much better.  When I use the Benefit foundation, people always comment that I have lovely skin… a glow, if you will.  The same thing happens when I wear the Gosh CC Cream.

The cream is labelled as “illuminating” but isn’t shiny.  There’s a slight shimmer in the finish, but it’s so fine that it comes off looking rather natural and pretty.  Those with oily skin will do well to use a primer and a powder with this CC cream, and that really will make it last a lot longer.  If you have dry skin, you will find this to be a nice dose of hydration.  It’s perfect for everyday wear.

Unlike the Benefit foundation, this cream does not have SPF in it… I’m actually okay with that because that means that it will photograph quite nicely.  It also comes in a limited amount of colours: 6 shades and all of them wear slightly light, so be aware of that as you pick one that suits you.

Pick it up at Shoppers Drug Mart locations.  $24. (The Benefit foundation is $42.)

Thursday Threes: Fall’s Best Volumizers

So the buzz word this fall when it comes to hair is volume.  Yes, the deep side part still reigns and you can’t go wrong with a slicked back style, but more and more, you’ll find easy to wear hair that has a little height to it.  Thing is, volume never really goes out of style, and if you’ve gotten a blow-out in the past year, chances are that your stylist used a little something to give your hair that extra boost.

Mousses, boosters, volumizing sprays are all back in a big way, and we found some favourites that are easy to use at home and actually work!  Check out our guide to this season’s best volumizers.

fall's best volumizers

1. Moroccanoil Root Boost.  Our stylist always sprays our roots with something really quickly, but this time we paused to check out what it was: Root Boost!  This is like a mousse, but in a dispenser that makes it super easy to spray it right into the roots.  Enriched with Argan Oil, Morroccanoil Root Boost also cares for your hair!

2. Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Blow & Go Thick. We love this light-weight spray because it actually makes your hair dry faster, and when we’re blow-drying that means it’s actually going to be smoother and shinier.  Sprayed right at the roots, this spray has enough hold that any volume you put in will last a long time.

3. Nioxin Rejuvenating Elixer.  The brand known for actually helping hair grow has come out with a line of stylers that help hair look and feel thicker.  The Rejuvenating Elixer is perfect for helping longer hair look and feel soft without weighing it down.

Essie 2013 Fall Colour Collection

Essie Fall 2013This, my friends, is a collection I love because there are so many rich colours in it.  Three creams, two shimmers, and a holograhic oil slick shade that is just perfect.

Colours are:

for the twill of it — medium brown with reflective green shimmer (this is the oil slick shade. Trust me when I say that it doesn’t look brown at all but instead is a hazy blend of grey, green, and blue shimmer.)
after school boy blazer — deep midnight blue (Gorgeous cream shade but nothing truly original. This is so dark that it almost looks black.)
twin sweater set — vibrant crimson red
cashmere bathrobe — true flannel gray (Gray with a touch of grayish silver sparkle. Understated.)
the lace is on — toned pearlescent fuchsia
vested interest — cool grey teal (The more original, and in my opinion, the best colour from the collection. Perfect even from summer to fall transitioning.)

Below: for the twill of it, cashmere bathrobe, and vested interest.

Here’s my swatch of After School Boy Blazer.

essie boy blazer

And For The Twill of It, Cashmere Bathrobe, and Vested Interest seemed so similar to me that I had to wear them all together.

Essie Fall 2013 swatches

Finally, Twin Sweater Set is the perfect fall red.  If it looks a little like a jelly to you, that’s because I only used one coat.  The colours are so pigmented that one coat was all I needed for opaque coverage, but the colour will be a little darker with two coats.

essie twin sweater set

All the shades are very pigmented and easy to apply.  There was no streaking at all, and most of the time I could have stopped at just one coat of polish.

Available at drugstores this month.

Perfume Review: Estee Lauder Modern Muse

Estee Lauder Modern Muse“A Modern Muse is strong and confident, enhanced by her own intrinsic femininity and individual style. She is the heroine of her own life, always following her own instinct.  She is an independent spirit who possesses a natural magnetism that draws people in, inspires them with her smile, and speaks to them without saying a word. She is memorable, a force of creative energy, a true inspiration to others.”

… that was the inspiration behind Estee Lauder’s new scent, Modern Muse.

It has notes of Mandarin, Honeysuckle Nectar, Dewy Petals, Jasmine Sambac, Tuberose Fleur, Fresh Lily, Madagascar Vanilla, Amber Wood and Musk.

Available as an Eau de Parfum, the scent is strong on the amber and musk notes, and you can smell them right from the opening.

Unfortunately, there isn’t that much modern or inspiring about this scent.  It smells an awful lot like Sensual Nude (which I actually loved, but I don’t need another of it), and other amber/vanilla blends on the market.  I didn’t get any of the fresh notes in the opening, and I think that’s a bit of a shame.

Modern Muse is now available at Estée Lauder counters nationwide and online at www.esteelauder.ca beginning September 2013.

100ml is $115.00, 50ml is $90.00 and 30ml is $65.00.

Lancome Teint Visionnaire Review

Lancome Teint VisonnaireTeint Visionnaire is the latest foundation from Lancome.  Actually, it’s also their latest concealer because this is a bottle of foundation that has an extra compartment on top filled with a matching concealer.  This is a “skin correcting makeup duo for dark spots-pores-fine lines,” according to Lancome.  The foundation and concealer is supposed to be a combination of skin care and concealing.  Think of it as an advanced BB cream: more coverage, coverage you can customize (thanks to the concealer), and balanced skin.

The SPF 20 formula is a blend of oils and pigments so it just glides on to the skin.  Although it does have oils in it, I didn’t find the foundation to be particularly oily and I was able to wear it although I do have oily skin.  I also didn’t find that it made me break out in the week that I’ve been trying it out.

It also has Vitamin C in it, however the foundation is housed in a clear tube, so I’m not sure how stable the vitamin C will remain over the long run.  The foundation is hydrating which makes it suitable for people with dry to combination skins.  Because it combines skincare and coverage as well as SPF, you may find that you can skip applying your regular skincare products and just reach for this foundation.

I’ll cut right to the chase and say that I really love this foundation.

It is light coverage with a slightly dewy finish.  The attached concealer matches the foundation very well which makes the duo super easy to use.  In fact, the concealer is pretty much a more pigmented, concentrated version of the foundation.  It’s not great if you need major color correcting (yellow for dark spots, or green for redness), but if you’re out to cover the odd blemish or even prime your eyelids, then this concealer will do the trick.  I found that it didn’t cake up or get into the fine lines around my eyes either.

The foundation really does make your skin look poreless: actually, it just looks like a better version of your own skin which is why it’s so great to use. For once, a foundation isn’t just correcting colour; it’s also correcting texture.  It feels quite like there’s a primer built into the foundation, which is kind of awesome.

I did mention that it sets to a dewy finish which isn’t great for oily skins, including my own.  Because my skin gets dewy on its own, I prefer not to use anything that adds that effect, but I found that I could just powder over the foundation and it looked great.  I did have oily-looking skin after a few hours, but even though my skin looked oily, the foundation itself was in tact which means that it can hold its own against oil.  It’s really up to you whether you’d like to sport a dewy look, and I rather like it because it just makes skin look so healthy.

The foundation is quite liquidy and very easy to apply; I really liked using my Beauty Blender sponge (I hadn’t used it in ages!) because it sheered out the foundation nicely and I could add more to where I needed it.  As I mentioned, this is a light coverage foundation so you do see your skin through it but it’s also buildable.

The kicker: this foundation is SPF 20 which means that it doesn’t photograph particularly well (at least it doesn’t on me).  I did find that flash kind of bounces off the foundation and makes me look a little paler than I’d like, but if you’re not running into a camera very often, then this might just be the foundation for you.  It does come in 18 colours which is a huge improvement compared to other brands – even some MAC foundations only come in 16 colours, so this is pretty awesome.  I was able to find one that suited me nicely.

$60 at Lancome counters.
