Thursday Threes: Three New Beach Sprays

…a little something I wrote for Elevate Magazine online.  Check it out here.

beach sprays

Beachy hair is the one hair style that’s always in fashion – even when we’re trending towards perfectly coiffed hair, nobody begrudges a girl with beach waves because she looks so effortless and so inspires a certain amount of envy in those that have spent hours on their hair.

But beachy waves don’t always come naturally (or because of the beach) and if you’re planning to work beachy low-maintenance hair this summer, you’ll need to know about these new sprays that promise you beachy summer hair.

got2b beach trippin salt spray

1. Got 2b Beach Trippin’ Salt Solution Waving Spray. This spray offers you the beach without the water.  Natural salts in this spray give texture to your hair so that it holds wave and looks just slightly messy so that you can work that beachy look.  Because salt can be slightly drying, this spray is best for those with straight hair because it can handle the salt and texture that this spray provides.  ($6 at drugstores).

Kerastase Spray a Porter

2. Kerastase Spray à Porter Tousled Effect or  “Beach Look”  Spray.  If you have hair that’s already dry, you’ll want to use a spray that doesn’t have salt in it, and this Kerastase spray might just be your best bet.  The light hold that this spray offers means that it’s great to use on dry hair because it won’t leave it sticky or hard.  ($36 at salons).

Shu_Uemura_Art_of_Hair_Liquid_Fabric_250ml1342621068

3. Shu Uemura Liquid Fabric Mineral Texture Spray. This is the best spray to use on hair that’s already wavy or curly because it only has a small amount of texturing ingredients.  Instead, this spray is packed with anti-humidity and frizz-reducing ingredients so it leaves your hair soft but still beachy looking.  It’s the best spray to use with heat styling because it can and will protect your hair.  ($42 at salons or at ShuUemura.ca)

Best Sunscreens for your Body

Originally, I wrote an article for Stylelist.ca about the best sunscreens that I’ve found, but since writing it I’ve come across and tried so many more that I need two separate articles: one on the best sunscreens for your face and another on the best ones for your body.  Lets start with the ones for your body.

And if you’re in a bit of a hurry and can’t wait for that list, you might want to check our past article on Sunscreens for your Face: What to Try and What to Toss.

summer's best face sunscreens

To help you out, we found the best sunscreens in different formulas and price points so that you can find one you love and can use it every day.

Studies show that if you use sunscreen every day, you greatly reduce any aging that shows up on your skin. This means using sunscreen even when it’s not sunny outside – because we all know that the harmful UVA and UVB rays are still there. We think that’s reason enough to invest in a suncare product all year round.

coppertone sunscreens

1. Coppertone Sport Sunscreens ($11.99). These drugstore sunscreens are awesome because they’re affordable and are completely sweat-proof and waterproof so they’ll last a long time.

Kate Somerville Body Glow

2. Kate Somerville Body Glow Sunscreen ($45). We love this SPF 20 sunscreen because it has shimmer in it so your skin looks good while it’s being protected.

spf-10-cream

3. Hawaiian Tropic Crème Continuous Flow Sunscreen. This sunscreen is only SPF 10 so it’s the only one that we’d recommend for cloudy days.

Aveeno Protect and Hydrate sunscreen

4. Aveeno Protect and Hydrate Sunscreen.  We love this sunscreen because it’s made for moisturizing and protecting from sun damage.  The formula is ultra-light and the sunscreen goes on more like a light lotion.

Neutrogena Beach Defence Sunscreen

5.Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen comes in different formulas so that there’s something for the whole family.  We liked the lotion, the spray, and even the one for baby!

And if there’s something that you use that’s not covered here?  You might want to check out a few sunscreen lists we’ve done in the past.  It may be that a sunscreen on there just isn’t one that we tried again this year.   Check out Sunscreen Reviews: The Good and The Bad from The Creams or Spring Break Essentials: The Best and Worst Sunscreens.

Swatch: Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips

sally hansen salon effects polish stripsNail polish strips just keep getting more and more amazing, and the ones we love recently give us an easy way to do a modern French manicure.  When we wore these Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips people asked us where we got our manicure done!  We think that’s a good sign.

Because these are made from real nail polish, they had decent lasting power and are very easy to apply.  They also come with tools: a cuticle pusher and nail file.

These are available at drugstores everywhere.

Summer’s Best Long-wear Products

I wrote this for Stylelist.ca, and since then I’ve added some more of my favourite long-wear products for the summer.  Check out the original article on Stylelist.ca.

Melting makeup is not cool, so here are our favourite long-wear products so that your makeup gets the best of this summer’s heat and humidity.

avon extra lasting

1. Avon Extra Lasting Liquid Foundation.  The new long-lasting foundations best old formulas because they are light-weight and feel natural on skin.  This one not only lasts the whole day, but also has a smooth matte finish, and SPF 15.

mary kay cream eye color

2. Mary Kay Creme Eye Color.  If you want simply lasting eyeshadow, then this cream colour is your best bet.  Smooth it on with a brush or your fingers and the budge-proof formula lasts and lasts.

marcelle eyeshadow and primer

3. Marcelle Velvety Eye Shadow + Primer.  The primer in this cream shadow helps smooth fine lines and lets color go on smoothly.

anastasia-covet-waterproof-eyeliner-625x400

4. Anastasia Covet Eyeliner. We adore this eyeliner because it goes on creamy and then sets to a firm finish.  You can even use it in the waterline of your eyes, and it won’t budge the entire day!

nars radiant creamy concealer

5. Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. If there’s one product you splurge on this summer, let this be it.  This brand new concealer from Nars hits the mark by being easy to blend (so it doesn’t tug at delicate under-eye skin) but also sets without settling into fine lines.  Full coverage means that you get perfect-looking skin by only using a tiny amount of product.

Make-Up-For-Ever-Aqua-Rouge-Waterproof-Liquid-Lip-Color

6. Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge.  Skip the lip glosses and lipsticks and reach for this liquid lipstick that sets to a completely matte long-wearing finish.  It comes with a top coat in case you want gloss, but Aqua Rouge looks and feels amazing even without it.

benefit stay flawless primer

7. Benefit Stay Flawless Primer.  Ok, technically not a makeup product that you can see but this stuff really does last all day, and helps your foundation and the rest of your face last the whole day too.  It feels kind of smooth and cool when you put it on, then sticky with your foundation, but once it really sets it doesn’t budge and you don’t feel it at all.  The claim is that this will make your foundation last 15 hours – I’ll say that this definitely extends the life of your foundation and that really depends on skin to skin.  If you normally get 12 hours, maybe this will take you to 15… I normally get at least 12 (I guess I tend to wear long-wearing foundations in the first place) and this helps it look freshly applied for a longer amount of time.

yves rocher ultra long lasting eyeshadow

8. Yves Rocher Ultra Long-Lasting Cream Eyeshadow Waterproof.  These cream eyeshadows come in vibrant shimmery colours and really don’t need any primer to go on smooth and stay smooth.

Benefit Rockateur Blush

Benefit-RockateurNew this September is another box of powder from Benefit.  Rockateur is a shimmery rose gold (kind of wears more like a mauve on me), and is pigmented enough to work on a multitude of skin tones.

Benefit Rockateur

It’s too shimmery for me to use daily, but I do love it as a highlighting blush.

$36 at Benefit counters.

The Best Glitter Top Coat Ever: L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Top Coat in Carat Gold

loreal paris top coatsSo L’Oreal Paris quietly came out with these amazing Colour Riche top coats.  They come in Carat Gold, Carat Silver, Sparklicious, Smoky and Matte.  They’re in smaller bottles than the original Colour Riche nail polishes but they’re limited edition, so that’s probably why.

So why is the gold the best glitter top coat ever?  Because it has lots of glitter and you can really play with how you place it on your nails.  Most other glitter top coats I’ve tried (including those by Deborah Lipmann) usually don’t have enough glitter to really make an impact on the nails.

I used the gold top coat to do an ombre effect on my nails.  I was happy with how it turned out considering it was my first try.

You can pick up the top coats at drugstores for $7.99.

Makeup Inspiration: Olivia Wilde

Olivia Wilde on the cover of Fashion Magazine’s September issue is basically the look that we’re going to aim for this fall.  Think: lots of lashes, smoky eyeliner, and a nude lip.  Nails are dark and the clothing is super colourful!

What do you think?

James Franco in new Gucci Made to Measure Commercial

This just in: the new Gucci commercial starring James Franco.  I’ll say this much, I like it better than the Brad Pitt Chanel commercial.

Thoughts, anyone?

New Perfume: Dior Addict Eau Delice

Dior Addict Eau DeliceToday I’m wearing the brand new Dior Addict Eau Delice.  Truth be told, something about this fragrance reminds me of India!  Maybe it’s the fact that I’m pretty sure one of my cousins religiously wore Dior Addict for a long time – Dior is a brand that people abroad love. Not only does it remind them of France, but of all good things imported.  Thus, wearing any Dior scent would be the ultimate in status.   Maybe it’s the New Delhi Airport that I’m actually reminded of, because I’ve spend hours (yes, really) in the Duty Free there, where the Dior mists are flowing.  This is a nostalgic scent for me for sure, even if it is new.

In any case, Dior Addict Eau Delice isn’t that different from the regular Dior Addict.

Notes are: cranberry, jasmine, ylang ylang and white musk.  You can definitely smell a lot of fruit initially, and the drydown has a floral and fruity blend.

The scent definitely smells fresh and summery – whether you like fruity fragrances or not, this one is sparkling and pretty instead of being a typical gourmande.

Available this July at Dior counters.  $49 for 50ml and $80 for 100ml.

Don’t Hide Your Flawless Skin, Show It Off!

show off your skin

Believe it or not, the way you dress and eat can either make or break your skin care efforts. For example you may have the most flawless skin in the world, but if you accentuate it incorrectly or if you eat a diet that promotes aging and skin problems, genetics can only help you so much before habits takeover. Accentuate your naturally sexy skin the right way by using the right clothing, products and diet.

If you’ve got it, flaunt it! Flaunt your skin by choosing the right colors. If you have a warmer skin tone like olive or gold these colors will complement your skin well: Reds, golds, oranges, yellows, caramels, and dark browns will all look great on your skin type. If you’ve determined that you have a cooler fairer skin tone then pinks, blues and purples will look best on you. For more style and beauty tips for skin this site with anti aging tips has great suggestions to help you pull off your look.

Whether you are genetically blessed or not, your skin can become a victim to damage and aging. Combat this the easiest way by using noninvasive treatments. LifeCell products from South Beach Skincare is a go to brand for getting healthy skin. Anti-aging is just the start to beautify your skin. The next step is to heal and reverse damage and keep your skin looking smooth.

You’ve heard the mantra: You are what you eat. Give your skin a break and lay off of processed foods. Whether you were born with healthy skin, or you are like the norm and need to give it tender care, a skin care diet needs to be taken into consideration. If you are looking to start small, start by incorporating more antioxidants into your diet. Antioxidants repel skin damage and will keep your skin healthy. This is the best way to start your skin care regimen. Slowly incorporate more antioxidant rich fruits and vitamins into your diet and your skin will prosper.

Keep these tips in mind and you will be on your way to showing off flawless skin!
