I Tried It: L’Oreal Paris Press-On Nails

color riche press on nailsSo I’ve never really been much for fake nails.  They always look fake, and if I’m going to invest in fake anything, it’ll be eyelashes, thank you very much.  But when L’Oreal Paris launched Colour Riche press-on nails in a beautiful white swirly design, I kind of had to try them.

See?

color riche press on nails

Pretty, right?

And then I snapped that picture and sent it to a friend who is really into nails, fake and otherwise, and she said “wow!  How’d you do that?!”

Well, needless to say, even though they looked fake to me, I guess they looked so spectacular that nobody really focussed on the fake part.

But check out how they look from the side.

The problem is that instead of nail glue, these nails use a double-sided gel sticker to hold the nails in place.  It’s quite thick (at least as thick as the nails themselves) and so makes the fakes stand up from the actual nails.  The stickers aren’t that sticky either, so unfortunately, most of the nails fell off the same day I applied them.

The suggestion I got from friends is to keep the nails but apply them using a couple of drops of nail glue instead.  These come in lots of fun designs and I’m tempted to try them again, although the press-on nail look is not really my thing.

Have you tried press-on nails?

On Counters Now: MAC So Supreme

Although this collection wasn’t supposed to be on counters until today, when I stopped by my local MAC store last week, a sales associate pointed me in the direction of new lip products out… which happened to be the MAC So Supreme collection.  No matter, turns out that this collection is another version of the MAC Sheen Supreme collection launched last spring.  It includes six colours of MAC’s Sheen Supreme lipstick, and eight shades of Sheen Supreme Lipglass Tint.

We like this year’s collection better.  Instead of the frosts which made up last year’s colours, this season’s Sheen Supreme lipstick comes in creamy shades which is more our style.

Similar to last year, part of this year’s collection is inspired by Asia, which is why some of the names in the collection have an Asian flair.

The Sheen Supreme lipstick colours are:

Sheen supreme lipsticks

Prêt-à-Pretty – soft warm pink
Gotta Dash! – pale clean coral
Playtime – bright coral pink
Sweet Grenadine – bright orange
Pleasurefruit – bright warm pink
Candy Apple – mid-tone warm plum
SRP $17.00 US/$20.00 CDN

This lipstick is extremely moist and comfortable on the lips. It has a nice amount of pigment, but one coat does let some of your lip colour show through, while two coats give opaque coverage.

Sheen Supreme Lipglass Tints

The Sheen Supreme Lipglass Tint colours are:

Bubble Gum – soft warm pink
K-wow – soft cool pink
Simply Wow – mid-tone cool mauve
Heart & Seoul – warm peach
Kiss, Kiss – cool peach cream
Blussing Berry – mid-tone cool red
Gwi-Yo-Mi – mid-tone raspberry
Glorious Intent – warm plum
SRP $20.00 US/$23.00 CDN

These are basically jelly glosses. They are incredibly moisturizing and give a transparent pop of colour that seems to leave a slight stain on the lips.

How To Remove Glitter Nail Polish

I love glitter nail polish but it is notoriously difficult to remove, and the new “sand” or scuffed glitter versions are no better. I’ve scoured the Internet looking for tips on removing the glitter nail polish.

Many blogs say that you should soak cotton pads in nail polish remover, place on your nails, and then cover the entire ensemble in tin foil for 10 minutes. Apparently the glitter polish just swipes right off after this – unfortunately, the health of your cuticles goes too, and after a month of nursing them back to health, that’s just not a sacrifice that I’m willing to make.

Another suggestion is to take a shower and then remove the polish. The warm water softens it enough and then it comes off easily. This didn’t work for me.

So, after much experimenting, I’ve come up with a way to really remove glitter nail polish and it works!

Take a cheap nail file (the disposable kind) and buff the top layer of nail polish off. You’re not aiming to actually remove any polish here but just really scuff up all the nail polish.  Then, go ahead and take off the polish with a regular nail polish remover.  You’ll find that the nail polish comes right off – I think the nail file just loosens up the glitter enough so that it’s not that stuck to your nail, and then the nail polish remover takes care of the rest.

Try this technique and let me know if it works for you!

….and you’re welcome!  Now you can wear glitter nail polish as much as you want without worrying about how difficult the removal process is.

Polish Perfection – OPI Liquid Sand

OPI Liquid Sand collectionI am totally obsessed with OPI’s Liquid Sand nail lacquers. These give a matte pebbly finish to the nails which is matte and so totally different from your usual nail look, and textured enough to be super interesting and fun to wear.

If you’re into this as much as I am, you’ll want to check out the OPI Bond Girls collection which has OPI’s Liquid Sand polish in six new colours! The polishes are super fun to wear and once you try them, it’s hard to get enough. I’ve already decided that this is the only nail polish I want on my nails right now – I know it won’t match my pastel clothes, but I’ve never been a matchy-matchy kind of girl anyway.  The colours are totally on trend and no matter which one you pick, everyone will be looking at your nails.

The colours are:

Solitaire
This diamond-sparkling white is totally engaging.

Jinx
This mesmerizing matte coral has lucky sparkle.

Honey Ryder
Take a ryde on the wild side in this shimmery gold.

Vesper
A mysterious and intriguing deep purple.

Tiffany Case
A classic light blue worth investigating.

Pussy Galore
This light feminine pink has the purrrfect amount of shimmer.

I got my hands on these when it was cold and rainy outside, and so the first colour I tried was Vesper. Think of it as the under cover cousin of Lincoln Park After Dark. I applied two coats because I felt that just one was a little sheer.

Vesper has a purple base with dark purple and shimmery white pieces of texture in it.

The next colour I tried was Honey Ryder.  I always wear gold accessories so this was the perfect colour to match.  Although the polish is a little shimmery for my tastes, I still felt like this was kind of a nude colour.

Solitaire is a colour that I normally wouldn’t gravitate towards but with the white nail polish trend that’s going on these days, this was a perfect addition to my nail polish collection.  It’s white (especially with two coats) but different enough that you don’t feel like you’re just jumping on the bandwagon.

Tiffany Case is pretty much a tiffany blue and I feel like it’s the most sparkly of the bunch because the base is a shimmery light blue with pieces of blue glitter.  The final effect is a sandy one but it’s still very glittery.

Jinx is an awesome colour for the summer – it’s a nice reddish coral with gold sparkle.

Pussy Galore was going not one of my favourite colours, but it’s turning out to be a best-seller.  This is a light pink that’s very easy to wear.

Because the finish of these polishes is supposed to be matte, OPI recommends that you don’t put a top coat on them. I always always put a base coat so that my nails don’t get discoloured, but I did find that the polish stuck to bare nails better.  I also tried them with a matte top coat (not in the pictures), but I didn’t find that extended the wear of this nail polish.  I find that the polish is very long-lasting: you can usually get a week of wear with minimal chips, however it tended to chip very easily when I went swimming – obviously that is a special case and if you weren’t in the water that much then I don’t think this polish would chip as easily.

Like most glitter nail polish, the OPI Liquid Sand polish can be tough to remove, but here is the one way you can take if off easily.  Take a cheap nail file to the polish and lightly buff.  Then go ahead and use your regular nail polish remover and you’ll find that the polish will come right off!  You heard it here first!

These polishes retail for $10.95 and are available at salons everywhere.

Fresh Faced: Fresh Rose Face Mask

Fresh Rose Face maskOf course as someone that’s really into beauty and skincare, I love my masks. I do a mask weekly (at the very least) and enjoy that the mask kind of forces me to relax.

The latest addition to my mask regimen is the Fresh Rose Face Mask. I love anything scented like roses so how could I not love this?

This mask is a gel formula that has actual rose petals in it, and is 50% rose water! It is hydrating and super refreshing on the skin – just leave it on for 10 minutes and wipe it off.

Completely refreshing and cooling, this mask is a must-have for the summer months because nothing will make your skin feel better after a day in the sun. The instructions say to use this mask daily, but I like using it when I’ve just come in from the sun because that’s when I feel like I need it the most. It’s also great to use before an event out because it will refresh your skin, tone it, and you’ll just look wide awake.

$63 at Sephora stores.

Anastasia Covet Waterproof Eyeliner in Azure

Every once in a while a new eye product ends up in my makeup bag and I become kind of obsessed with it.  To the point that I show it to my friends and family and try to convince them to get it because it’s so awesome.

anastasia covet waterproof eyeliner

These days, it’s all about Anastasia’s Covet Waterproof Eyeliner in Azure, supposedly a royal blue but actually a beautiful blue black that makes brown eyes really pop.  Seeing as the nineties are back “in” and blue eyeshadow enjoyed a brief moment in that time, the Azure liner totally hits the mark.  You can sport blue on your eyelids but nobody really has to know it.

The liners are self-sharpening which means that they’re really fine and are perfect for really getting into the lash line.  I like to use them as eyeshadow too – I apply the liner, smudge quickly before it has a chance to set, and then apply more just at the lashes.  The overall effect is an undone smoky eye that’s modern and perfect.

Because these liners are waterproof, they last in any kind of weather and because my look is smoky, I can up the ante by just applying more liner whenever I need.

Covet Waterproof Eyeliners come in five colours: Azure, Noir (black), Vert (mossy green), Steel (grey), Astral (silver).  Pick them up at Anastasia.net.

Lightweight Sunscreen from Aveeno

HI!  Just your local #beautyblogger reminding you that even though it may be cloudy outside, and even though the forecast calls for intermittent showers, and even though you feel as if it should be much warmer than it is outside, you still need to wear sunscreen.

I send out that reminder after reading the results of a survey commissioned by the AVEENO and NEUTROGENA.  The results of the consumer survey were as follows:

• One in three Canadians does not see tanning as a risky behaviour
• Over 60 percent (61%) of Canadians think they look healthier with a tan
• Almost 50 percent of Canadians (48%) think it’s important to get a base tan before a vacation in
order to avoid sunburns
• Over 50 percent of Canadians (54%) think that it is fine to tan as long as they do not burn
• 69% of Canadians work under the impression that skin cancer is correctible if it is detected early
enough
• One in every four Canadians does not use sunscreen
• Only one in every 10 Canadians has ever had a skin cancer screening from a dermatologist

If you’re one of those people that like tanning, just remember that a tan means that sun damage has taken place, so even though you might feel like you look healthier, your skin is actually not healthier.

And while I’m sharing information, take into account these nuggets of wisdom from “Cosmetic’s Cop” Paula Begoun:

  • There is no such thing as a safe tan, whether it is from the sun or a tanning booth/bed.
  • UVB rays from the sun cause sunburn.
  • UVA rays from the sun are silent killers because you don’t feel them but they are the primary cause of skin cancer, wrinkles, and a weakened immune system. (UVA rays even penetrate through clear glass windows that do not have a UV coating.)
  • Even on a cloudy or hazy day, all the sun’s rays are present and damaging your skin.
  • Sitting in the shade or wearing a hat only protects against a portion of the sun’s rays.
  • Surrounding surfaces such as water, sand, cement, and grass reflect the rays from the ground to your skin giving you a double whammy of exposure.
  • Altitude is a sun enhancer: For every 1,000-foot increase in altitude, the sun’s potency increases by 4%. Don’t forget the sunscreen when you’re skiing!
  • A product’s SPF (Sun Protection Factor) number is a basic indicator of how long you can stay in the sun before getting burned.

(Read more of Paula’s Sun Sense here.)

To that end, check out my new favourite sunscreen so that I don’t get a tan: Aveeno Protect and Hydrate Lotion Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 30.  This sunscreen is for face and body, and so of course, I tested it on both.

Aveeno Protect and Hydrate sunscreen

Right out of the tube, the lotion is thick and white and super creamy – which is fine for something you’re going to put on your body, but maybe not for something you want to put on your face.  After all, with summer’s humidity and potentially sweat-inducing temperatures, you want something lightweight on your face because it’s less likely to clog your pores, and let’s fact it: if you’re less likely to feel it on your face, then you’re more likely to use it often.

Well, I’m happy to report that although the lotion looks thick, when you start rubbing it into your skin, it actually feels watery in consistency and is easily smoothed over skin.  It absorbs in a matter of minutes and ends up being a powdery finish that you can’t see or feel.  Whether you choose to top it with makeup or leave your skin as-is, you’ll actually forget that you’re even wearing sunscreen – that’s how light-weight this lotion is.

The sun protection this lotion provides is broad spectrum (as stated on the label) which means that it protects from both UVA and UVB rays – you’ll prevent sun burn and skin damage.  Though the lotion is basic – there are no antioxidants in it – I still use it daily because I apply antioxidants at night time anyway, and a basic lotion is fine for my face and body.

And as for the “Hydrate” in the name of the sunscreen – I will say that despite the matte finish, this lotion is definitely not drying (sidebar: have you noticed that some super greasy sunscreens leave your skin feeling really dry?), and my oily skin gets enough hydration from it that I don’t need to use a moisturizer during the day, I can just apply this sunscreen.

Pick it up at food, drug, and mass merchandisers for $14.59.  It also comes in SPF 45 and 60, but I have not tried those.  My guess is that the higher the SPF, the less lightweight the lotion is, but if you need better sun protection then go for one of those.

Thursday Threes: Vitamin C

If you’re not using some kind of Vitamin C product on your skin already, what are you waiting for?!

Adding vitamin C to your skincare regimen is the easiest way to add an antioxidant to your skin and improve its texture and luminosity.  It also increases collagen production and helps protect skin against oxidants which can cause damage to the skin and increase signs of aging.  It’s one of the few skincare ingredients that has been shown to work time and time again, and there’s a good reason that any and every high-end skincare company will have a vitamin C product in its line – even if you have sensitive skin, you can use vitamin C in some form and see it make a difference. In fact, vitamin C can repair damaged DNA, says Robin White Director of Global Education and Press for philosophy. Instead of your damaged cells replicating to make more damaged cells, vitamin C can repair the DNA in those damaged cells. It’s no wonder that Philosophy boasts a number of products that have vitamin C as an active ingredient, and the new Time in a Bottle comes with its own little vial of vitamin C that you mix into the serum yourself.

So here are three vitamin C products that we love and have made a serious improvement in how our skin looks.

1. Philosophy Time in a Bottle.  This is a brand new serum that comes with its own little bottle of vitamin C that you mix in when you first open the package.  By pouring the vitamin C fresh, you ensure that you don’t give the Vitamin C a chance to oxidize before you’re ready to use the serum.  The vitamin C will stay stable for 3 months, but the serum is a 2 month supply (if used once daily) so you can be assured that you’re using a product that will still be making a difference to your skin.  $85.

2. Obagi Professional-C Serum.  This serum comes in a 10%, 15%, or 20% formula and is housed in a dark blue bottle to keep the Vitamin C stable.  Sticky at first, it feels like nothing on once it absorbs into your skin.  Start with the least potent and work your way up to the highest potency for best results.  $130 and available only at dermatologists’ offices or at med spas.

3. The Body Shop Vitamin C Facial Cleansing Polish.  This polish has super-fine beads in it to really help your skin look and feel smoother.  It retails for just $16 but can go head to head with other more expensive scrubs.

Easy Summer Foundation from Dior

Diorskin Nude Compact FoundationThat’s right, ladies, you read foundation, not BB or CC or any other such cream.  I’m talking actual coverage, longer wear, and not too much worrying about skincare, because you’re going to apply sunscreen before foundation anyway, right?

So my foundation of choice this summer is the Diorskin Nude Compact which is a powder foundation with an SPF 10.  Apply it with a sponge, or the accompanying flat yet fluffy brush and you will get a light coverage of foundation that just seems to last and last.

The foundation is very forgiving in terms of coverage.  You’ll find that when light hits your face, your skin looks flawless, but the sheer particles do let your skin show through too.  It’s an interesting effect.  The foundation is light-reflecting and that’s how it makes your skin look great, but it’s not at all shimmery!  I love it because it’s really easy to get nice looking skin with the foundation, without looking like you’ve overdone it on the makeup.

Because it’s compact and so easy to apply, it also makes for the perfect companion on the go because you can dust it on oily skin whenever you need.

Here’s to easy yet beautiful summer skin.

$52 at all Dior counters.
