Do You Dare? Oil-Containing Hair Products

For a while now, oil hasn’t been a dirty word when it comes to talking hair care. While before we wanted to do anything possible to avoid the “oily” products because of the greasy look they might bring, now the industry has done a 180. The realization has been that hydrated hair means healthy hair, and one way to keep hair supremely hydrated is to keep in natural oils, and when needed put more oils into the hair to hydrate and condition.

We’ve written about hair oils before – in particular, know when to spend money on a good hair oil and when to save your pennies.

It’s also timely to acknowledge Ojon which was a game-changer in the hydration department – they encouraged us all to pre-condition with their heavy treatment, and their hair serum is really more like an oil.

And now, here’s are some of the latest products that use oils in them. We’ve tried them all, and we’ll tell you whether to spend or save.
First up is Redken’s new Smooth Lock system. The line promises to give your hair the right type of hydration so that it stays smooth longer instead of frizzing up. Their key ingredient? A patented Heat Fuse Complex and a Interlocking Protein Network, but also: Almond Oil!

There’s a shampoo ($14.99), conditioner ($16.99), Butter Silk (an intensive super thick conditioner) ($21.99), Leave-in Cream ($20.99), and Heat Glide serum ($23.99).

Of all of the products offered, we love the Butter Silk and the Leave-in. The Butter Silk has shea butter in it, and the Leave-in is so concentrated because of the coconut oil that’s listed as the second ingredient! If you need serious hydration, we recommend picking up either of these two products or the entire line. We truly did see less frizz after just one use.

Though the Redken products contain oil in them, truth be told, they’re so well made that you could hardly tell.  But if you are willing to try something more… oily, then you need to check out Marc Anthony’s new Repairing Macadamia Oil collection.  Macadamia Oil is lightweight yet super hydrating, so it works for all hair types without weighing hair down.

Our favourite product was the Repairing Oil Treatment ($9.99) which feels oily to the touch but actually absorbs into your hair without any residue or weight.  It’s light as air and yet still moisturizing and easy to use.

Those worried about oils adding dullness to colour-treated hair need not worry – there’s Ojon’s Color Sustain PRO Fade Fighter, ($33) a conditioning treatment which not only contains the repairing Ojon Oil, but also has Babassu, Jojoba, and Tahitian Monoi Oil in it.  The treatment is used in the shower and seals the cuticle making hair look nice and shiny and protecting it from color loss.  Used weekly, it promises to protect color for up to 40 washes.

Of course is colour care is your priority, then Kerastase’s new Chroma Captive  is just the ticket.  The products contain Linseed Oil which leaves the hair fibres smooth and helps hair reflect light.  An added benefit is that the shampoo is sulfate-free but still provides a rich lather, meaning you end up with super clean hair without drying it out or doing any damage.  The system promises to lead to up to 50% less colour fading, which means that we’re golden until our next trip to the salon.  We loved the Masque Chroma Captive ($61) which is super hydrating and perfect for using on days when your hair needs a little extra TLC.  It’s thick and rich, and perfect on colour-drenched ends which usually need some extra care.

Though most of the brands we looked at had nice oils and worked well for our hair, there was one line of products that we were less than thrilled with: Matrix Biolage’s ExquisiteOil.  Both the shampoo and conditioner in this line have hardly any of the advertised Moringa Oil in them (it’s way down on the list of products, which are always listed from most to least), and the hydrator in the conditioner is mineral oil – nothing special.  Even the Exquisite Oil has mostly silicone in it, so we’d rather pass.  For a salon line, we found this one to be lacking.

At the end of the day, all the products we tried left our hair silky and smooth without any weight.  The worthwhile products are even lighter than the first silicone-based products on the market, and the best ones are a hybrid of oils and other conditioning agents for your hair.  When choosing an oil-based product for your hair, make sure you find something that really is light-weight – that way you can play with how much you use.  Also look for oils on all levels of hair care – you want hydration in the shower and out of it.

Perfect for Your Significant Other

… or someone else that you know really well.

I’m talking about a toothbrush friends, because really this one is the best thing since sliced bread… I mean, I have a Sonicare and I’m thinking about switching over, because this one is so nifty and new.

It’s the Oral-B Professional Care SmartSeries 5000 with SmartGuide – as with all things these days, this one is a mouthful to say but it’s totally worth memorizing the name.

OK, so what makes it so special?

The toothbrush comes with visual timer that reminds you to switch between different parts of your mouth so that you get a nice even clean.  There’s not just the run of the mill beeping.  You actually get a digital display that you tack on to your wall, and it lights up when it’s time for you to change to brushing a different part of your mouth.

It also tells the time.

But all that side, by FAR the best part about this toothbrush is that it actually beeps when you’re brushing too hard, which – in these parts – is a Godsend, because yes, we do brush too hard, and despite bi-annual chastising from our dentist, it seems to be a habit that we just can’t kick.  But now there’s something that tells us that we’re brushing too hard and we can do something about it!  Genuis!

At $185 this is not one of those cheap brushes that you replace every year, but it’s worth every penny and will be appreciated by every vigorous brusher in your family.

Gwen Stefani on Vogue Magazine

This is a must-see and almost makes me sorry that I’m cancelling my subscription to Vogue this year: Gwen Stefani on the cover of the January issue in Alexander Wang and wearing a YSL is beyond inspirational.  And not in the makeup sense, of course.  She still has her blonde blonde hair, and the red red lip, but the look is just too good and is really how we all want to look this holiday season, isn’t it?  Flawless.

Limited Edition from Philosophy

In terms of cult bath products, Philosophy has that department down.  Every winter, they bring out their Gingerbread Man body scrub and it’s something that people stock up on so that they don’t run out for the entire year.

Though it doesn’t actually smell like a gingerbread cookie, the zesty gingery scent is a great pick-me-up, and the formula is a classic salt and glycerine blend that washes away clean.

The huge tub is $33 at Sephora stores.

Hourglass Veil Fluid Makeup Foundation Review

… in the weeks before the holidays really begin (you know, the parties and such) I go on a mission to find the perfect foundation.  This means that not only does it need to match my skin-tone perfectly, but it also has to be truly long-wearing, and needs to look absolutely flawless in pictures with or without flash.

My latest find is Hourglass’s Veil Fluid Makeup, which is oil free and has SPF 15.  If you haven’t heard of the brand, you need to hit up a Sephora and check out the tiny yet well-edited display of awesome high-end products.  The line is known for its primers and foundations.

This foundation has a light and silky texture which means that it goes on to skin easily.  I found it quite easy to blend on with my fingertips (the warmth of my fingers worked especially well to move the foundation around), but because it’s quite liquidy, you can easily apply the foundation with a foundation brush too.  I am, of course, partial to the Hourglass foundation brush which is pretty awesome.

What I absolutely loved about this foundation is the finish.  It’s dewy but it feels silky matte to the touch.  It’s a fresh look but it covers all your pores and doesn’t settle into lines even when you don’t use powder on top.  Your skin will look silky smooth and flawless, but it’s still medium-light coverage that can be layered on to help cover whatever you need.

And the best part, is that the foundation will last all day and look fabulous.  I’m not the kind of girl that carries powder around with me to blot and touch-up (though I have oily skin so I probably should), and I was happy with the wear that this foundation had.  Yes, my skin was glow-y after a few hours, but the foundation and the coverage remained so I was happy with the look that I had.

At $70 this foundation certainly isn’t cheap, but the texture and look make up for it.  The one issue I have is that Hourglass foundations aren’t available in very many colours which means that you’re either going to be able to use it … or not.

Pick it up at Sephora.

Marchesa Parfum d’Extase Review

Marchesa – the line worn at virtually red carpet event around the world – launched a new perfume that is supposed to be a companion to their glamorous line of clothing.  The perfume bottle itself reflects the brand’s sensibilities – simplicity paired with some bling.  It’s a clean cut crystal looking bottle with a trim of crystals lining the outside.

What’s actually surprising is how accessible the scent is.  Sold at Sephora, the scent is a powdery floral that reminds me of fresh sudsy soap.  The idea is that you let your clothes and accessories speak for themselves, rather than your scent.  It’s very wearable being quiet but long-lasting.  This is a perfume that only those that hug you will be able to smell, and everyone else will just think that you took a shower just before you arrived.  Those kinds of perfumes are not usually my cup of tea, but for some reason, Marchesa really resonates with me because of the blend of florals.  The notes are iris, freesia, violet leaves, night-blooming jasmine, ambrox and musks.  It’s definitely a clean feminine scent.

Pick it up at Sephora: $72 for 1 oz.

Dior Grand Bal Christmas 2012 Collection

This Christmas, Dior gives us a blast from the past with it’s Grand Bal collection. I say that it’s a blast from the past, because the collection features the older Dior packaging which was luxe and beautiful, but essentially out of date when the streamlined packaging of other brands became the norm. That said, seeing the packaging now is refreshing. The gold is back in style, and I don’t think anyone really minds pulling the heavy weighted gold lipstick tube out of their purse.

The collection has four new shades of Diorific lipstick ($38), two new shades of UltraGloss ($31), and four new shades of Dior Vernis ($38) – all in the old-style packaging.

There are also two 5-colour eyeshadow palettes ($60).

The entire collection seems tailor-made to help you get ready for your holiday parties. The dramatic lipstick comes in 4 variations of red (Lady, Diorling, Marilyn, and Diva), and each has a matching nail polish. The Ultra-Gloss can be super sparkly or add some depth to your red lipstick, and the palettes each have a super shimmery gold shadow to help bring the attention to the eyes.

There are also the Dior Grand Bal Lashes ($28) which come in deep black or gold, and are adorned with crystals or pearls.

The palettes are Night Golds:

and Fairy Golds.

I am leaning towards the cooler colours in the Fairy Golds palette.  The super shimmery colour in both wears almost the same, although it looks darker in the Night Golds palette.  As always, the pigment and staying power of the Dior palettes is awesome.

The nail polishes are meant to go with the lipsticks.  Nail polish colours (from left to right) are Diorling, Marilyn, Lady, and Diva.

As usual, the nail polishes are well pigmented and easy to wear – Dior is the one luxury brand nail polish that you can’t ever go wrong with.  They have the right amount of pigment and last a long time on the nails.

Here’s Diva.

It’s a black that looks like brown because of the gold shimmer in the polish.  Unfortunately, once applied, the effect of the shimmer is lost, and from afar, my nails just like very shiny black.  Because of that, I don’t feel like Diva hits it out of the park when it comes to unique nail polish colours, and if you have a nice glossy black in your collection, then you’re pretty much getting the same effect as this polish.  The packaging itself is beautiful, and if you’re a packaging person, you might just want to pick up this polish just for that.  That said, the bottle cap for this polish makes the brush a little hard to handle.

The collection is so pretty that it’s worth it just to get a few pieces as collector’s items – especially the cute polish bottles which look like baubles.

Do you see anything that you’re going to pick up from this collection?

Aerin Lauder’s New Launch

For all intents and purposes, you really wouldn’t know just from the compact whether you were looking at an Estee Lauder product or one titled “Aerin”, and so it’s hard not to think of Aerin Lauder’s new makeup launch as simply an extension of the Estee Lauder line. Perhaps this was a brand meant to speak to younger buyers – those typically not found at the Estee Lauder counter. Or maybe it was meant to be for the Goop-reading moms at home who wanted a chic piece of this almost-socialite world.

Whatever the case, and despite all the hype, the new Aerin line is terribly underwhelming, though the concept is good.

The line is based around “must-haves” – products that Aerin Lauder, grand-daughter of Estee, has in her makeup bag all the time. So there’s a Weekday and a Weekend palette ($78) each of which includes a highlighter, a blush, and 2 eyeshadows. The Weekend one being more neutral and easy to wear because you want to kick back and relax with a more natural look on the weekend. This doesn’t apply to my life (my weekend makeup is decidedly more dramatic), and I have a hard time seeing how it applies to anyone else’s – unless it’s summer and you’re off to the cottage over the weekend. But we’re into Fall now and the weekend means red lips or smoky eyes.

The weekend palette has more of a bronzer than a highlighter.

That said, the palettes are well thought out and have wearable and easy to use colours – my suggestion is to ignore the weekend/weekday labels and find one that is going to work for your colouring.

Besides the palette, there’s also a collection of essentials.

Again, the colours and the tone of the products just make you think of Estee Lauder, although there’s no disguising where the inspiration for some of the products came from. The “essentials” include a Rose Lip Conditioner the texture and consistency of which is pretty similar to the By Terry Rose Lip Balm which retails for nearly $50. There was a time when almost every celebrity interviewed had this lip balm in their purse at all times, and now you too can own it too, although it’s $30 for a much smaller tube.

The Aerin collection does have some things going for it: there are lots of wearable natural colours that really would suit a large demographic of women. But despite all the hype, it’s just not a collection that you can get that excited about… yet. Holiday is approaching, and the line will include more interesting colours at that time. We’re waiting with bated breath.

Brad Pitt’s Chanel No. 5 Commercial Part 2

Turns out that there’s a second part to the creepy Brad Pitt Chanel No. 5 commercial.  Check it out.

The campaign is a huge success – everyone’s talking about it!

But is it selling more bottles of Chanel No. 5? (And does it really need to?)

Dior The New Nude Collection

At counters now is Dior’s The New Nude Collection which has a load of new products that are going to be permanent to the Dior line.

The collection’s centrepiece is their new Diorskin Nude Fluid foundation which has light-reflecting pigments that make skin look luminous.  It’s a light-coverage foundation that has great staying power and has a beautiful finish, because though it’s sheer, it wears for a really long time.  The foundation has translucent pigment technology that works with your own skin tone to make skin look even – think of this as a long-wear tinted moisturizer, which is perfect for people who always wanted a long-wear foundation but didn’t like the heaviness that usually comes with them.  The Diorskin Nude Fluid truly looks like your own skin because it has a slight luminescence to it.  For best results, apply this on bare skin (like all long-wear foundations), and you’ll see it last a really long time.

There are also two new eyeshadow compacts, Dior 3-Couleurs Glow, – which are my favourite from Dior in a long while.  Both the compacts have neutral colour eyeshadows, and are paired with a deep black matte shadow that can be used wet as an eyeliner.  The eyeshadow is pretty awesome because even with the black shade there’s hardly any fallout which makes the shadows super easy to use.  The two colours are Ivory and Nude both of which have 2 shimmery shadows with an overlay of glitter.

And finally, there are four shades of nude nail polish – amazing because polish is actually something that Dior does so well.  There are 2 shades for warm skin tones and 2 shades for cooler skin tones.  The colours are Charnelle, Trench, Grege, and Dune.  The polishes actually look a lot different from the picture above.

Here’s my swatch of Grege.

And Trench.

If there’s anything from the collection that you should get, it’s the eyeshadow and the foundation. The foundation looks like your skin but better, so it’s a pleasure to wear.
