Clarins Beauty Flash Balm Review

I’m getting ready for some important events in my life, and so I’ve had a peel and my skin is flaking badly. The only thing to do is wait it out and moisturize to hide some of the flakies that can be persistent.

I turned to Clarins Beauty Flash Balm which is a cult product popular with those who have dry skin. You put it on before applying makeup, and put makeup right on top. It dries into a layer of moisturizer and seals moisturizer in.

I found that it gave instant relief to my dry and taut skin, and I could even apply it on top of makeup throughout the day. I did not find that it gave lots of hydration and definitely not the long lasting type, but it did give relief and concealed the dry skin.

I also love that this is so compatible with makeup and seems to make it last longer!

You can also use this as a facial mask, which I also liked to do, but as a daytime skincream this was the best.

Strange Invisible Perfumes Egyptian Rose Body Lotion

Strange Invisible Perfumes is an indie perfume line based out of California that makes all natural perfumes. The essences are organic, and the product is hydro-distilled. I’ve heard a lot about the line and their interesting creations, and perhaps you have as well, but this body lotion is the only one that I’ve tried. The website says that they are currently reformulating their lotions so this is not available right now, and I got my bottle last year, so I am reviewing the old formulation. You may still be able to find it at stores that carry this line.

Of course, a body lotion made my a perfume house is going to be something quite special and unique-smelling so lets start with the scent part first.

The Egyptian Rose scent is all rose – it’s true and clear and slightly dirty just like a real rose would be. The rose is distinct but there are also a touch of spices in the scent. There are peppery and herb notes that keep the scent fresh, and though it’s a strong rose, it veers slightly on the masculine side, though no man I know would ever wear anything so blatantly floral.

The lotion’s formula is something else. It has absolutely no greasiness, to the point that I would almost say that it’s matte. It absorbs into skin very quickly though it’s not watery at all. The scent is the only thing that will remind you that you even wore this lotion. I have to admit that it’s not the most moisturizing lotion that I’ve tried, and if I put it on my hands, I follow up with another lotion later in the day. I wear this lotion for the scent and for the scent alone, and perhaps in the reformulation they will change this to something more moisturizing and luxurious in feel.

If you love rose scents the way that I do, this is a must have. The lotion retailed for $40, and since they’re clearing it out, you may be able to find it on sale for less than that. Because the lotion smells so strong – use it on your hands and the whole room will smell like a rose garden within a spice market – I use it sparingly. It has lasted me a long time since I only use a pump here and there and when I’m in a particularly feminine mood.

OPI Play the Peonies Swatch

This OPI colour is from the Nice Stems! collection that’s out this month.

Play the Peonies is a really light pink with lots of fine shimmer. It reminds me of a ’80’s frosted lipstick in the best way. I thought the colour went on lighter on my hand than it looks in the bottle but I think that’s mostly the shimmer coming into effect.

What do you think? Is this your colour?

Polish Swatch – Nars Kismet

Kismet was part of Nars’ Summer 2011 collection and is a jaundiced gold colour. The polish is pigmented enough – 2 coats to opaque coverage which is nice. The shimmer is soft and pretty which I love. It kind of looks like my nails are glowing. Honestly, I didn’t love the colour when I first put it on… it just seemed too yellow for me. But it has grown on me, and I like that it adds a subtle pop of colour and is so much more interesting than regular gold polish and is more mature than the yellow drugstore polishes.

Kismet is $17 wherever Nars is sold.

OPI In the Spot-Light Pink Swatch

I wore this colour to a bridal shower, and I’m sad to say that it’s so transparent that I don’t think it was worth the effort. The one thing that I absolutely love is that the colour is super shiny, and I think it would be excellent for a French manicure.

This colour is already available at salons.

Lush Dirty Review

Lush’s Gorilla Perfumes is my favourite brand right now, and their new launch Dirty, reminds me why I love them so much.

Dirty is a unisex fragrance, and it’s really one that can be worn by men or women.

The scent is a mix of mint, lavender, tarragon, and sandalwood. It’s not acidic and citrusy like most men’s scents are, but it’s fresh and clean and reminds me of chewing gum. It also smells really minty when you first spray it, but then turns into more of a mild sandalwood and lavender mix that’s easy to wear. The overall effect is herby, green, and fresh. It reminds me of a rainy day in a herb garden or entering a spa because it smells so natural and clean.

The Dirty line has lots of products so that you can layer the scents. There’s a shower gel which is super refreshing and makes your shower smells like a spa. There are also shaving cream and hair gel. Finally, there’s a body spray that comes in a hardy Windex-like spray bottle. Don’t let the bottle fool you though – the spray is strong and very long-lasting and it smells absolutely amazing. I do wear it but my favourite use for it is to spray it into my gym bag because it just re-energizes the smell of everything and lasts forever!

Check out Dirty at your local Lush store. Because it’s a more masculine scent, it may be best to try before you buy because it’s definitely not for everyone.

Swatch: Dior Aloha

Dior’s Aloha nail polish was part of its Electric Tropics collection that was released for this summer.

The polish comes packaged with Dior’s quick-drying top coat.

As you can see, the polish is a jelly finish.  I used 3 coats and even then the color was not opaque, but it’s so pretty that I didn’t mind. If the colour looks a little reddish in my swatch below, it is.  The colour looks lighter in the bottle than it is in real life.  Instead of being a neon or bright fruity orange, it is a reddish orange.  It doesn’t go with anything in my wardrobe, but it’s so summery that it doesn’t even matter.  This would work well in brightening up a white outfit or something that’s more plain.

I did not like the top coat.  It dries so quick that getting a nice even layer on is hard, and then it chips so easily!  My polish chipped the first day that I had it on, so I won’t be using the top coat again.  I would rather use my Seche Vite.

The polish is at Dior counters everywhere!

Nars Make Up Your Mind

Legendary makeup artist, Francois Nars, launched his new book last week, titled Make Up Your Mind: Express Yourself.  Retailing for $50 this book takes real people (really!) and infuses them with glamour through the application of makeup.  When I say that these people are real, I mean it.  They aren’t models with super high cheek bones, full lips, and naturally lush lashes.  They are like you and me: they have nice features, and some that need enhancement, while others just need a touch of the expert hand.

The best part of this book is that Francois Nars tells you exactly which products he’s used to do the make overs and all the products are available at your local NARS counter.  It’s pretty fab.

The formatting of the book is very well thought out and really makes it stand out from other how-to manuals that are out there:

“The “before” and “after” images are identical in size, making it easy for the reader to compare the faces and see how the result was achieved. Transparent acetate overlays on the “after” images provide specific products and techniques. To lend a more personal touch, the overlays include hand-written notes from François. The goal is for the reader to study the “before” and “after” looks, then place the transparent page on the  “after” image to see exactly how the transformation was created, what makeup was applied and which techniques were used.”

In Canada, the book is available at Holt Renfrew and retails for $50.  It is a must-have for any makeup lover, or for anyone who wants to get better at doing makeup.

I don’t have the book, but here are a couple of before and afters from it and they are impressive.  Just these pictures had me going through my Nars stash to see if I could do some of the looks myself. …I can’t, but it’s definitely upped my game a bit.

And finally, Francois Nars leaves us with some words of advice which I love:

“Regardless of what look you are trying to achieve, less is more.
Always go for transparency no matter what—even with very
intense colors. “

OPI Sparrow Me The Drama Swatch

OPI’s Sparrow Me the Drama came out as part of their Pirates of the Caribbean collection this May. The colour is very girly almost Barbie pink with no shimmer. Two coats gave me full coverage, and unlike some of the other OPI pinks that I’ve tried this spring, this one is very long lasting. With my regular CND Stickey base coat, and Seche Vite top coat, I got more than 7 days wear and took it off only because you could see a lot of growth of my nails.

I don’t like girly pinks to begin with, but I gotta say that by the end of the week the colour had grown on me, and it’s a keeper.

Ojon Volume Advance Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner

I love Ojon products because they’re made with ingredients that are proven to help repair my hair. It’s one of the only brands that can do that and so I’m always excited to try their products.

Their latest is the Ojon Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner which I really wanted to try because I knew that it would be moisturizing yet light.

If you have curly hair or hair that is very fine (and I have both), then you have to add this duo to your regimen.

After using it, I found that it left my hair very moisturized, but it didn’t weigh it down at all. My curls were nice and light, and yet my hair was super shiny. It was like I had used a volumizing shampoo from the drugstore but didn’t have to deal with the super dry hair that it usually left me.

Pick this up from TheShoppingChannel.com. The duo retails for $40, or you can purchase each product separately for $26 each
