Benefit’s New Crescent Row

One of my favourite perfume collections is Benefit’s Crescent Row. The perfumes are long-lasting and interesting, and they come in the best packaging! Trendy gold bottles that are small enough to take anywhere.

Now, Benefit has 3 new members to the collection – Eva, Rita, and Carmella, and each brings something different to the mix.

Each one has it’s own longer title that gives a hint of what the perfume smells like. Eva is “The Garden of Good and Eva” which of course means that it’s a floral perfume. The top notes are a little fruity – watermelon is definitely there, but the drydown is a mix of woods and flowers. Rosebud, Jasmine, and Freesia keep the scent fresh, while Sandalwood, Cedarwood, and Musk bring something earthy to the mix.

Then there’s “Lookin to Rock Rita” which is a more free-spirited blend. There’s coconut in the top note that I could smell immediately. It’s not pina colada sweet though, which is a relief and is more dry and real. There are floral middle notes, hyacinth, violet and freesia, and sandalwood and vanilla in the drydown. Surprisingly this one is my favourite scent. It’s summery but different. I like the sandalwood and the vanilla because it really warms up the fragrance, and even though the whole scent has vanilla and coconut in it, it’s not a sweet gourmand like one might think.

Finally, there’s “So Hooked on Carmella” which is definitely a sweet gourmand, mostly because of the amber mixed with vanilla in the drydown. The lemon and grapefruit opening notes are hardly there, and then all I could smell was the tons of vanilla in this. I still found this to be a pretty scent, but just not my style.

Overall, these are definitely different from the original 3 that were in Crescent Row, because they were more feminine and almost instant classics, whereas these are more fun and girly. They’re still different from anything else I’ve smelled in a while, and refreshing additions to my fragrance wardrobe, especially Rita!

They are now available at Sephora, Shoppers, Murale, and select Holt locations. Each one retails for $42 for 30 mL.

Vogue Beauty

I’m drawn to books about beauty products I guess, and I’m really enjoying reading Vogue Beauty.  The book is written by a team of beauty writers and editors and features information on how beauty has changed through the past few decades, what technological advances have been made, and even has a section on “scent” which is informative and very well-written!

The book is a serious read rather than a fun one and really gives you a cerebral approach to beauty.  There are a bunch of how-to’s in here, but they’re accompanied by pictures of the final products rather than those that show steps as you go along.

Indeed, one of the things that this book is missing is more images!  It would have been nice to see actual ads from the decades that they talk about in this book and some original pictures from Vogue would have been a nice addition.

Regardless, this is a great coffee table book with lots of interesting information in it.  It’s nothing that you couldn’t read about in the latest Vogue magazine, or any magazine for that matter, but it is nice to have all that information at one place and at your fingertips.

Nars Love Devotion

Orange lippies are the colours to go for if you want to update your look this summer, and you can do no wrong with Nars’ Love Devotion. This is an uber sheer glossy orange, that mixes with your natural lip colour (because it’s that sheer) and gives you a pretty bright summer lip. It’s the nicest shade of orange I’ve seen this summer and I insist on wearing it everywhere.

For parties, I’m topping this with a gloss to give me some oomph, and this is certainly going well with the coral blush that I’ve been wearing non-stop.

Get this at your local Nars counter. Holt’s also has a promo wherein you can sample the Nars Orgasm Illuminator.

I am a Mille Femmes

A little while ago, I was contacted by the lovely people at Lancome telling me that I was chosen to be one of Mille Femmes. What is that, you ask?

Well, it’s an artistic project where a photographer named Pierre Maravale takes portraits of 1000 women, in this case all of whom were chosen for their artistic contributions to the community! I was one of them, and now my picture is one of 1000 that hangs in BCE place, downtown Toronto. If you’re in the area, go and check it out!

Last week I attended the launch party for the exhibition, which is officially part of Luminato. I munched on appetizers and had a look at my picture and those of many of my friends. When I left, I got a lovely Lancome goody bag, and since I like to pay it forward, a couple of those products are going into the giveaway bag. What will you get? A full-sized Lancome eyeshadow and a Juicy Tube. Really, it doesn’t get much better than that.

If you haven’t entered the ongoing giveaway yet, enter here!
