Gucci Bloom Perfume Review

Text
Does anyone else feel like there’s no time? Not enough time? I mean, yes there’s time to write this but the rest of the time it’s running between work and home, meals and snacks, the grocery store, the post office and everything else. I’m finding myself to be a little spent, but still making time to read this and write, and watch White Lotus (I’m on episode 5, don’t ruin it for me).

Anyway, I’m enjoying Gucci Bloom which I could write off as a boring white floral but I also kind of love that it gave white florals to the masses, because many of you have told me that you like this and a few teens have told me they like this too. It’s a jasmine/tuberose combo and I get a bit of sweetness in there too. Maybe something sticky-sweet like compote or jam or honey, but it’s also in the background and not right up top.

I can’t help but reflect on the fact that Alessandro Michele brought this classic old-school aesthetic to Gucci but also made it whimsical and fun, and will that go away now that he’s out of Gucci? The apothecary-style bottles, the gold, the perfume waters, luxurious yet essential…

Anyway, Gucci Bloom is fun and keeps things light and easy.

Current Makeup: Fenty Beauty, Charlotte Tilbury, Lancome and more

I don’t remember what day it is today, but to be honest, I lost track a couple of days ago… I think… Glowy skin because I didn’t use a stitch of powder……my skin’s been a little dry thanks to me amping up the tret before the holidays. So I’m been layering on tons of sunscreen when it’s sunny out, and layer on moisturizer once the sun sets.

The Fenty Skin sunscreen is a moisturizing glowy sunscreen that works well with their makeup. I used Charlotte Tilbury concealer under my eyes, and as you can see, I apply it quite sheerly. I thought about layering on more but I don’t care about hiding every pore on my skin. Also used the Contour Wand in Fair/Light and it blends out so easily. Used the Fenty Beauty Eaze Drop foundation but also sheerly. You can see my freckles through the coverage and that’s fine. Also used the Fenty Beauty Double Cheek’d up blush. Lancome Monsieur Big mascara. It’s tubing but it still smudged a bit. Nars Dolce Vita Satin Matte lip pencil because it’s a dumb reach and I’ve had it forever but I think I want something glossy now.

Histoires de Parfum Ambre 114

A gateway amber for some, a reference amber for others. Maybe an amber for people who are not really into ambers – Ambre 114 by Histoires de Parfum. Cozy and warm without being suffocating, sweet but not gourmand. Thyme, a shadow of a rose, vanilla, benzoin, and is that tonka?

The opening is so addictive, with a sweet rose, and then it settles into its aromatic amber body. I actually get thyme throughout the wearing of the scent, and I think that’s what keeps it from smelling too sweet. If you have strong associations with thyme being part of your roast chicken or turkey dinner, then this perfume might not be for you, but I rarely bring thyme into my kitchen so I don’t mind it here.

You know those fall walks where you can hear the crisp leaves under your feet, feel a cool wind on your face, but feel snug in your coat, maybe around a fire? This perfume feels like that.

Can we talk about the size of the bottle? I love a travel size, and 15ml is perfect. I love that they kept with the aesthetic and it still looks like a Histoires de Parfum bottle. This size lets you see whether you love a fragrance enough to invest in a full size, and is perfect for stashing in your bag, or your desk.

Every time I spray this I think: “omg, this is my favourite perfume” and when I have that reaction to a perfume, I know it’s a keeper.  Here’s my video review of it.

Empties: Amika, Boscia, MooGoo, ColorWow, Fenty

Text
The highlights:

MooGoo lip balm and body cream. This was my favourite find of 2021 and I enjoyed it this year too. The lip balms aren’t sweetened and are very waxy so they stay on your lips.

Color Wow Dreamcoat. I used this before blow drying or straightening and I won’t ever be without it again. Honestly, it’s so good that I’ve already bought a full-size bottle. It makes your hair so smooth and frizz free and it STAYS that way which is the best part. I bought this because someone compared it to Wonder Water but for blowdrying your hair, and I know that people have bought it because I mentioned it.

Amika purple conditioner – I had this at the pool twice a week and I feel like my hair still looks pretty orange but I’m getting it done in a week so watch out.

Boscia Body Wash. Foamy and lovely.

Fenty Skin Fat Water. Kind of a cool essence that you pat into your skin for extra hydration. I used it out of the shower because Calgary air is notoriously dry.

The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% Review

Text
Here’s an update on the Azelaic Acid that everyone bought in October when it launched in Canada.  Azelaic Acid is an ingredient that helps with skin tone, and it’s a good ingredient to have in your skincare lineup if that’s something that you struggle with.

The Azelaic Acid is in a silicone/water-based formula, very much like their vitamin C, and I don’t love it. The packaging keeps the formula stable but it has a tendency to pill, depending on what other creams you’re applying on top. I have made this work for me. Apply right before sunscreen, right after retinol and DON’T rub it in. Just let it be and it won’t pill. I apply sunscreen but just glide it on and let it set.

I really like using it at night, on top of my retinol. If you have the A313 retinoid, try it with that. The A313 is a water-based pomade so it works well with this “suspension” formula. I know that if you’re using the Azelaic acid on top you are technically “buffering” it which means that it has to go through another product before it gets to your skin, but I’ve still noticed a difference on my skin when I do this.

Violet Parfums First Impressions

https://youtu.be/feF7u-z0dZA

Quick reviews of Violet Parfums. I liked all of them, and the price point is great. There are also travel sizes available and I love that option best of all. If you come across them, sample them if you can. Natalie Lorson is the perfumer, and she has hundreds of perfumes under her belt, so these do smell refined and complete. I haven’t smelled the latest one, Abîme.

Have you smelled these? Do you have a favourite?

Fenty Watch Ya Tone Serum and other Niacinamide Serums

Let’s talk about a bit of skincare.

The Fenty Skin Watch Ya Tone serum is out and it has been getting a lot of buzz. Niacinamide is… you guessed it… great for dealing with pigmentation. Why do we need all these things ingredients to deal with the same problem? The short answer is that they all work in different ways, so if this is something you really struggle with, having an army of products can be helpful.

Watch Ya Tone has 5% Niacinamide and yes, it’s been shown to be effective even in small doses, so you don’t have to go out and find the formula with the most in it. I’ve noticed that Fenty formulas are really smooth and well-blended. The products work together seamlessly. I feel like their marketing seems geared toward teenagers but they’re encouraging good skincare habits which will make a difference in the long run.

I’ve tried a few other Niacinamide products like one from The Ordinary, which is 10% and with Zinc. I found this one to be amazing in the summer because it kept my skin so matte.

Bliss has a Niacinamide and Pore Vanishing toner that I loved.

Oh K! is a Korean brand that has a Niacinamide mist and it worked well too. This one was available in the drugstore so I didn’t have to order it.

Do you have a Fenty product you love? The sunscreen is my favourite.

Tom Ford Champaca Absolute Perfume Review

The most underrated Tom Ford, Champaca Absolute, my theory is because it’s so intensely feminine from beginning to end that I have a hard time imagining a man wearing it. Champaca, gardenia, jasmine, sweet and soapy all at once. A whiff of white tea, bubbly like champagne, revitalizing like a lush wet garden.

I always think of this as a summer perfume, but it’s mood-lifting in the dead of winter, beautifully heady and tropical, completely different from anything else at the Tom Ford counter. A decade into my collection and it’s still unique enough to hold on to, still interesting enough to reach for.
