Latest #blindbuy: @sisley Soir d’Orient. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you watch my stories on Instagram, I posted about this scent a few weeks ago and said that using the word “orient” and “oriental” in fragrance descriptions is not only outdated but also racist. Although the word “oriental” came into use as a fragrance category in the 1920s, Sisley’s Soir d’Orient was launched in 2015, so there was really no reason to continue stereotyping Asian countries, since air travel has made those places much more accessible, and the Internet has really allowed everyone the opportunity to connect with other parts of the world. Why would a brand use the word “orient” to describe its scent? What images come to mind, and what are the negative connotations of this word?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Anyway, with all that in mind, I couldn’t bring myself to pay full price for Soir d’Orient, but I found it on eBay! Someone else had blind-bought it and then decided that it wasn’t for them.
