What’s great is that these days you can wear your hair any way you want. Curly hair is just as celebrated as straight hair once was. I love that there are a million different products for curly hair; when I was growing up, it was just mousse, which left your hair so crunchy and dry. Now is the era of curl creams, most of which leave your hair moisturized and bouncy. I use all of these on wet hair and let it air dry. The product spreads better when hair is wet, and then you’re locking in moisture.
Every girl with curly hair knows that curly hair looks best the day it’s washed, and needs to be rewet in the morning. I’ll wet my hair in the sink, and then put a bit of curl cream into my wet hands, rub them together to mix the water and cream, and then scrunch into yesterday’s hair.
Redavid’s new Curl Defining Creme is more like a thick balm. It smells like Hypnotic Poison – a playdough-like vanilla – and it’s hydrating.
Fenty Beauty has a curl cream in a jar, and it came with directions – apply to wet hair, and then “break the cast” with a few drops of the hair oil. This is the first time, I’ve seen a company acknowledge that their product dries hard and needs to be broken up, although if you have curly hair, you are well aware of this phenomenon. I was blown away by the message – it finally felt like a brand understood curly hair. Fenty Hair products are strongly scented with their frangipani beachy scent. I love it, but it’s basically your scent for the day if you use their hair products.
Finally, I’m still using the Sisley Curl Care Cream that I got many months ago. This one is thick and feels more like a gel on your hair, drying stiffer than the Fenty or the Redavid and not as hydrating. Still, my hair is fine and is easily weighed down, so the Sisley cream is perfect for a bit of definition.
